Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

[Sanctuary] Job Application!

OOCSorry if it's a little bit short/choppy, I didn't really know where to start it off.

Timestamp: 49th Fall, 512 AV

Traneiros woke up to the sound of rain. He could almost feel the water whenever he took a deep breath, such was the humidity inside of the small cottage. Getting up and making his bed, he walked into the kitchen and grabbed some fruit, munching on it as he moved to his workstation. He opened his journal and began accounting his finances for the season, realizing pretty early on he'd have to get a job if he wanted to keep his lifestyle intact. Filing away that thought until he'd finished his cost projections for the season, he got back to work. It wasn't very easy, as he'd never learned actual math and was constantly using his fingers to count some of the smaller numbers, and had to revise his work constantly to make sure his addition was correct. Finally, when he had everything double-checked and accounted for, he realized he'd only have 165 gold mizas at the end of fall, barely over half of the money he owned. He'd have to get a job, and get one fast at that. Racking his brain for where he could work, Traneiros had a spark of an idea, but he couldn't put his finger on it. Deciding a good meal might well indeed re-jog his memory, Traneiros made himself a couple of sandwiches, and right as he took his last bite, he suddenly remembered.

He had heard that the sanctuary was in need of healers, and realized how a job there might solve all of his problems, giving him money for something he felt obliged to do with his god-given gnosis. Plus with his medicine, herbalism and philtering skills, he could possibly make a lot of money, while getting some practice. Ecstatic, he put away his journal and writing supplies. Getting ready for the interview, he quickly made himself look decent and walked out the door into the street. The warm, tropical rain was almost pleasant to be in, but Traneiros was very intent on looking his best for the interview, so he tried staying in the driest areas where the rain was having a hard time penetrating. "It's amazing how durable the Akalak are, working hard doing back-breaking labor in any kind of weather." he thought to himself. Traneiros knew the city like the back of his hand, and was at the sanctuary in no time. Walking up the steps to the door, he got one of the worker's attentions and asked them where he could find Kavala for a job interview. The worker told him to wait where he was, and disappeared from plain sight. Assuming the worker was going to fetch Kavala, Traneiros waited patiently where he was, hoping he hadn't made a mistake by coming here.

[Sanctuary] Job Application!

Kavala was knee deep in studying herbalism. She had been all day. There was a decided change in the air tot eh denizens of The Sanctuary as winter was fast approaching. Most everything was done that was going to get done before the snow flew, and the drenching rains were already here. They had most of the herds in the Sea Cave and had been steadily harvesting seaweed to add to their stockpiles of grasses to see the animals through the winter. They would all go out and graze, even in the rains, all but the Denusk foals and their dams, because those herds were too invaluable.

To add to her medical knowledge, Kavala was studying from a book simply called Herbalism borrowed from the Valkalah Library and then copied into her own handwriting. There was a great deal to know, to understand, and figure out when it came to applying herbal medicines to actual medical practices. One had to get a good groundwork first.

According to her book, the best way to learn herbalism as medicine was to realize and understand three things about herb affinities. The first was that all herbs had affinities. And those affinities applied to patterns of disease altered them. The second thing was that one needed to know the affinity of an herb to an organ or body system. And finally, the third thing was that one needed to know the affinity of the herb to the basic pattern of self-governance in the organism. Self governance was an easy enough concept. Kavala had been introduced to it on Mura in her days as a young medical student.

An body was like a living river system. There were energetic flows throughout it. One had to understand the flows in order to understand what was going on with the disease or upset in the organism that was making it sick. For example, the energy moved from the inside to the outside of a body, bringing in nutrition, heat, and energy to all parts of a body. At the same time, the body was protected from the cold and the harshness of the exterior by the skin or shell or bone that housed the body. If the internal heat died down the body was not able to defend the outside skin/shell/bone so that cold, blockage, and disease crept in and attacked the core heat. Thus, the object of medicine was to maintain the heat in the center, the flow to the outside, and the integrity of the defensive system at the perimeter. So this was the key to medicine: Self regulation in all things and how to achieve it.

Kavala took notes, long thoughtful drawn out notes.

So, an herbs affinity, getting back to her earlier train of thought, was how it influenced movement in the body. Herbs were indeed categorized by their actions: whether they opened, closed, moved up or down, thinned or thickened. And what herbs did depended on the herb and the system the herb influenced. Affinity. It was a simple concept.

In fact, Kavala studied long and hard, not even realizing that Aweston was standing there for a moment, trying to get her attention.

When Aweston came to get Kavala, she simply shook her head. "If he wants an interview, he can come in here. Show him in? See what he thinks?" She asked, tapping the book. "I'm not going to stand out in the rain today talking to a stranger when we can be discussing herbalism and I can learn something from him." She said mildly.

Aweston nodded, returned to the stranger, and smiled. "Miss Kavala says you can join her in the philtering lab. She's studying and said that inside is warmer and far more pleasant today than outside in the rain. I'll show you the way." He said calmly.

If the stranger was willing, Aweston lead him into The Within, cutting across a riding arena and through some large stone double doors that lead downward on a ramp wide and tall enough to ride two horses abreast down. Tunnels branched off and Aweston took one, leading through a large common room area decorated like a brew pub. The commons lead to a hallway that opened into a library and several other intersecting tunnels. Aweston took another and lead the stranger down to a philtering lab that was on the right.

He opened the door and showed the man in, introducing Kavala. "Kavala, this is the man requesting a job." The Konti looked up from her desk, smiled, and pushed her books aside rising.

"Hello there. I'm Kavala, like Aweston said. And you are? I take it you are here for a job. Can you tell me a little about yourself?" She said, studying the young man critically but not a bit rudely. The Konti was dressed casually in butter soft black leather pants and a scarf-like top. Her hair was braided but creeping loose and she was bent over a desk studying a book that was labeled Herbalism by a prominent Konti Opal Order Herbalist. It looked to be copied from one of the text in the Valkalah Library if anyone were to frequent the place at all.
