Molding Magic I- Beginnings

The nuit was hard at work today. No, he wasn’t devising the newest alchemical formulas, he wasn’t thinking about the homunculus, today he was thinking about half lives, and the half-life principal of alchemy. In all his years of researching alchemy he never really took into account the amount of half-lives affected his work, and how, when an alchemist is skilled enough the half-lives grow exponentially. He knew that this was due partially to the size of the circle which the alchemist could use, but also the amount of acceleration which goes into each product. The bigger the circle, and the faster the djed is forced around the circle the bigger the half-life.

Rayage thought back to his years at the university. A brighter student asked if there was a way to calculate the half-life of an alchemical product. Well, if one thought about this project logically they could write a formula to help with this project based on what is known about half lives. What exactly is a half-life in alchemy? A half-life is the form of magical decay of an alchemical reaction. Specifically it is the time in which it takes the reaction to decay fifty percent. Naturally one could work this out with numbers by asking simple questions. How much of the reaction is left after one half life? One half of the reaction is remaining after one half life. How much of the reaction is left after two half-lives? If at one half-life only one half of reaction is remaining, two half lifes is half of one half which equates to a fourth of the reaction left. After three half-lives? Well half of one fourth is one eighth. How could this be represented mathematically? Y=1/2^t. The ‘Y’ in the equation representing the amount of remaining material, and ‘t’ representing the amount of half-lives passed.

Mathematically the questions could be asked like Y=1/2^1. 2 to the power of 1 is still 2, so the Y would equal 1/2. Y=1/2^2. 2 to the power of 2 is 4, so Y would equal 1/4. Y=1/2^3. 2 to the power of 3 would equal 8, since exponents multiply the base number ‘x’ amount of times. ‘X’ being the number represented by the exponent. So 2^3 would be (2*2*2) which would equal 8.

The more the alchemist thought about the problem of calculating half-lives the more it really got to him the impossibility of the task. There were too many factors which equated into calculating a half-life, and although a half-life can be represented mathematically and it can be found out how much of the alchemical reaction remains after a certain number of half-lives, calculating half-lives themselves seemed daunting. Not only would he have to take into account the variables of circle size, and djed acceleration, but also somehow accurately measure the djed radiation coming from an object. It all could be done with the powers of observation, since it was obvious enough when about half the decay has set in, but to get it precisely was boggling to him. He frowned at the problem before him, and took the sheet of parchment, crumpled it up, and out of frustration threw it as far as he could manage with his nuit-like strength.

Half-lives were not consistent enough to measure with any sort of accuracy since they vary from wizard to wizard, and project to project, not to mention that they grow with the skill of the alchemist. Though those were daunting factors in itself, to solve this problem the nuit would have to correlate circle size and figure out how that plays in with everything else. Not only that, but figure out an accurate way to measure the acceleration of djed within a circle. So he had two variables which he couldn’t account for, and he guessed that the formula for something like this would look like S*A=H. Though even that seemed wrong for he was multiplying different variables. The size of the circle was a measurement of distance, Acceleration of djed was a measurement of speed, and H was a measurement of seasons, possibly years. How does a measurement of speed and distance account for time? For right now, it seemed like too much work. Rayage was an Alchemist, not a mathematician.

The paper landed not too far from where Ray was. If his look alone could light it on fire, then it would have combusted ages ago, but that wasn’t the case. ”Another idea that just won’t work?” a voice sounded at the door, the other coming in without as much as announcing his presence. This nuit was Master Karte, ”I heard you’ve returned to Sahova.” he said, the nuit was holding a small box.

”Yes, I’ve returned.” he said doubting that this is what the master really wanted to talk about. He was sure that he of all people have heard about the homunculus project which got funded.

”You’re about to complete your dream.” the other said solemnly. So, this is what he wanted to talk about, the specifics to his homunculus. Rayage turned his attention from the paper to the wizard in front of him.

”I am” the nuit nodded, eyes falling on the small box which Karte held, ”Whats in the box?” he asked curiously, the question bringing him back to the first day of the island. Did his curiosity never cease?

”It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you.” Karte chuckled, ”You have a wandering mind and soul, traveling to place to place. I thought that this might help you in your travels.” he said extending the plain looking black box towards him, the entire time they had been talking Master Karte had been making his way further and further into the alchemists lab.

”I don’t know how much traveling I will be doing after my latest project is complete.” Rayage said collecting the box from him, ”Thank you, Karte.” he said opening the box to reveal a ring with two blue gems in it, adorning either side. The band itself was made of iron and didn’t look too exquisite. It was a simple looking ring and it was tucked lightly in the box, a cloth supporting and protecting it, the middle of the cloth going through the hole of the ring, making the ring appear as if it was sunken in place. As Rayage looked at it, Vicks words came into his mind questioning if making the items clay-like was the best way to go…

The nuits eyes lit up with inspiration as he stared at the ring. His hands began to shake with excitement as he hurried over and put the box down on his desk. Gaze darting to master karte, ”Thank you master.” he said, the old nuit, know it or not had just given him inspiration. Change was coming and with that change would come inspiration and with inspiration comes innovation. He knew it. He knew how to take the malediction crafting to the next level. They would have to use molds! Why didn’t he think of it before? His thoughts were racing as quickly jotted down his idea with one word, and in this time in common tongue. Molds. That was the one word which he wrote.

”You haven’t even seen what it can do.” Karte urged the nuit to try it on, ”It’s perfect for someone like you.” he said, sounding slightly proud of himself, ”And consider it a ‘welcome back’ present along with an early celebration of the completion of your dream.” he told him.

Ray then looked back at the box, silently he thanked Harameus giving the god recognition and reverence for a job well done. He had got the message, the sign, it was too clear. Picking up the ring delicately, he slipped it on a finger, but noticed no change, nothing. ”The stones are really nice.” he commented half-heartedly giving the master something that he thought the other wanted to hear. It was a gift after all, and one that probably meant a lot to Karte or it was perhaps a piece of rubbish the master wanted to give away. Either way, it was nice, and it looked good on his han… The nuit stopped mid thought and looked at his hand. It looked… no way! It looked alive! ”Wha…” the nuit was shocked and Karte chuckled.

”The Ring of False Life.” he named it, amused at the nuits confusion ”it will allow you to take the appearance of a living person, or to be more correct it gives the illusion of life to the body which you are wearing.” he explained trying to make it simple enough to be understood in the state of shock.
