A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

The Prodigal Roommate Returns

Winter 47th, 512

"I can find my way from here." Both Laszlo and a four-armed sailor stood at the mouth of a sea cave, not far inland from where their rowboat had landed. The moon was obscured by cloud cover, bathing the southern cliffs in shadow, but the Eypharian was armed with a torch that provided more than enough light for the Ethaefal's sensitive eyes. The coastal waters rolled and sprayed themselves against the cavern's inner walls, but Laszlo could see a passage that went upward, away from the water, and then tunneled deeper into the rock. He knew it as one of Kalinor's openings, only available to someone who could climb, or fly.

Leaning against a tall, jutting rock, Laszlo began to unlace his boots. He nodded to the sailor, who looked eager to go back to the ship. No telling what creatures were lurking out here. "Thank you for taking me ashore. I shouldn't be any longer than a few bells." He paused briefly, his claws halting over his laces. "Please, keep an eye on Fia Eaven for me."

The Eypharian nodded. The flames of his torch snarled and cowered from the cool air as he turned around and began to head back. He called back, his voice thickened by an accent similar to the captain's. "Signal when you are ready."

----

Laszlo was out of breath by the time he arrived at the Meadows Public House, where he stopped to rest his weary limbs. They were already stiff from the cramped spaces on the kersha, and his climbing was lately unpracticed. He had his healthy, immortal nature to thank for what endurance he had, or he might have fallen out of shape.

The Public House was very quiet, both from the time of day and the time of year. Kalinor received few visitors in Winter, as the Unforgiving was more unforgiving than usual. Still, Laszlo was received with cordiality and welcome by the skeletal staff appointed there at the late bell.

A young clerk, one of the Aconite, offered tea, much to Laszlo's relief. He quickly informed the young Symenestra that he was Ethaefal, and had arrived by ship anchored off the coast. The captain's missive was given to the youth, a diplomatically worded note asking for trade. It was promised the missive would be delivered to the Aconitum come morning.

After finishing his tea and gathering his fortitude once more, Laszlo scaled the strand roads toward his second reason for returning to Kalinor. Despite the way the city was closed off to the sky, elements of this shadowy place would always kindle warm feelings in the Ethaefal, especially in this state. In many ways, it felt like home.

Laszlo arrived at Duvalyon's home, where he positioned himself near the entrance. Knowing the odd hours the he kept, he was certain the medic would be home. At least he hoped. He'd rather avoid having to search the Place of Purging for him. Too much risk of running into the elder Hellebore. Laszlo dreaded the idea of meeting him alone.

"Duvalyon, are you home?" Laszlo knocked on the outer wall and called through the silk curtain. He chose Common for his greeting. It had been rather difficult keeping up with the Aconite's Symenos earlier. His tongue still felt knotted and dry. "It's Laszlo. I was hoping to speak with you. I'm only here for a moment."

When there was no discernible reply, Laszlo knocked again. "I swear, I'll be gone in chimes, but I need to speak with you. I don't think I should be bothering Semelia at this time of night." Perhaps second bell was too early for Duvalyon to be home. Another moment of waiting and Laszlo would make himself brave enough to ask around at the Purging.
In the daytime I am one of Syna's fallen.
At night, I am Symenestra.
