 Day Phase
Height: 6'2 Weight: 174 lbs Hair color: Changes Eye color: Amber
Laszlo's Ethaefal form is handsome, looking by human standards to be in his 20s. His eyes glimmer with an impossibly golden radiance, reminiscent of the warmth of Syna's light. The sleek horns coming from his temples, glassy and occasionally semi-translucent in certain lights, draw in an easy, circular curve. Plentiful locks of soft hair pour around them, worn a bit longer than average, and settling somewhere between wavy and curly. More often than not, it's pulled back into a stylishly haphazard ponytail. His fair, unblemished skin sometimes shimmers with a bronze gleam.
He appears healthy, standing at over six feet with a good, firm build. He dresses in light, airy clothing, almost always preferring dark, earthy tones.
Despite his beauty, there is always a shadow in his smile, and an emptiness in his gaze. Spring; Hair: Golden Blond Horns: Pale Lilac Summer; Hair: Sunkissed Chestnut Horns: White Autumn; Hair: Fiery Auburn Horns: Milky Red Winter; Hair: Moderate Brunet Horns: Forest Green
 Evening Phase
Height: 6'2 Weight: 149 lbs Hair color: Dark Silver Eye color: Amethyst
When the sun sets, Laszlo takes on the form of a Symenestra. Though he stands at the same height, his build is now thin and lissome, with the trademark, elongated appendages of the Symenestra race. Laszlo loses his horns and some of the curl in his hair, trading his auburn for silver in a look that can be described as stringy. On each of his fingers are long, wicked nails, sharp like claws and black as ebony. His skin loses its healthy color, becoming a more greyish hue, like the skin of old mushrooms, traced with subtle, delicate veins. This makes his sparkling violet eyes stand out like radiant gemstones against an otherwise achromatic visage. In his earthbound form, Laszlo appears to be a Symenestra in his mid 30s.
When he shifts into his night phase, Laszlo usually prefers to let down his hair, allowing it to rest upon his shoulders. He usually wears a thick, leathery jacket in place of the chitin armor his once-kin usually adorn. The undershirt he wears beneath reveals his light build and thin waistline. In places where he feels a Symenestra would be an unwelcome sight, he often dons a hooded cloak, or a cowl in warmer weather. |
[frame=black] Beginnings Like the shining light of Syna, this Ethaefal's story begins at dawn. Laszlo's first memories as a mortal begin around two years ago, when he found himself treading water in the Suvan Sea. He didn't know it was called the Suvan Sea then, nor could he know that the land he saw on the horizon was a city called Syliras. All he knew was that his only option was to swim to shore, or drown. Encased in this new, naked mortal body, he was overwhelmed by a strong urge to fight for his survival, motivated by a foreign, yet mortifying fear of death.
Upon reaching the shore, chilled by the frigid winter winds of western Sylira, Lazslo remained wet and shivering on his hands and knees, trying desperately to understand his new existence. The assault of powerful confusion over his predicament was short-lived, however, as he succumbed to hypothermia and collapsed there on the ground. It was the young daughter of a Syliras fisherman who found him, and soon the Ethaefal was taken to their home and delivered to a warm bed. Laszlo woke some time later with a hot, damp towel on his forehead and lying beneath a cozy mound of heavy blankets. Nearby there was a young woman (who he'd later learn was named Raelynn), the fisherman's oldest daughter, preparing soup over a stove fire.
When she noticed he was awake, she came to his side and comforted him, finding herself drawn to his immaculate beauty. Laszlo asked her his questions, the sort of questions all Ethaefal would have. When she couldn't provide answers, the very existence of life's uncertainty proved to him that he was once again in the mortal realm. Raelynn called for her father, who explained that he'd met another person with horns before: a beautiful maiden burdened by an enduring sadness. Laszlo learned that his kind was called "Ethaefal," and that upon nightfall, he would lose his horns and become temporarily human. Bewildered by everything, Laszlo's only choice was to absorb the information and attempt to understand his new reality. Everything felt familiar, but he had no concrete memories of his mortal lives.
The fisherman offered Laszlo a set of clothes and dinner, but he felt no desire to eat. Instead, he showed his gratitude by helping to chop wood, fetch water, and performing other menial, daily tasks around their home. Weakened by his earlier hypothermia and exhausted by this drastic change in his existence, Laszlo went to bed before sunset.
Later that night, he woke suddenly from a violent dream, tinged with memories he couldn't quite hold onto. The room was too bright for being past nightfall, which perplexed him. His horns had gone, and his entire body felt different, lighter. Feeling too restless to sleep, he got out of bed and walked toward the window, where the moonlight was nearly blinding.
As he looked down at his hands, Leth's white light glittered off of the black claws extending from each of his fingers. His skin did not have the healthy pink glow of the human family that was caring for him, but appeared to be a sickly gray. His curling strands of auburn had become thin and silver, and when he ran his tongue over his teeth, he discovered that he had fangs. He knew that these attributes were familiar to him, but he couldn't remember what it meant. He certainly was not human.
Laszlo remained in his room for the rest of the night, pacing across the floor and trying to recall the name of his earthbound race, feeling it on the tip of his tongue. When dawn arrived, returning to him his graceful, beautiful form, he forced himself to forget what he became when the sun stopped shining. Again, he helped the fisherman's family with their daily chores, learning more about life in Syliras, the value of coin, and what it takes to survive in the civilized parts of Mizahar. When evening drew near, he returned to his room, worried about what the fisherman might think if he discovered that Laszlo's night phase was more monstrous than they both expected.
Raelynn knocked upon his door to check on him that night. He asked her to leave, but she refused. The door had no lock, so she let herself in. Laszlo kept himself hidden in the shadow, self conscious about what he'd become. In the moonlight, Raelynn's blonde hair looked almost white, and her vibrant brown eyes appeared almost golden. Spurred on by some long buried memory of his former life as a Symenestra, he summoned the courage to face her. When she learned what he was, she reacted as any intelligent young woman would: she panicked. She shrieked for her father, who came running, and soon after cast Laszlo from their home.
With that first lesson under his belt, Laszlo continued on, trying to make a place for himself in the mortal world in which he did not belong. He worked odd jobs to earn a living: wiping down tables at a pub, cleaning stables, helping old women with their laundry, all of this in the daytime. Eventually, he found himself traveling to Kalinor, to learn more about the Symenestra and find out what he could about his more recent former life. Though he tried to make a place for himself there, he eventually learned that trying to revisit his old existence as a Symenestra was impossible. So he's moved on, and continues to look for a place that can feel like home. No matter how impossible it is. |
Friends and Acquaintances
Since his fall, Laszlo has met a handful of people who have deeply influenced his identity and directly changed his life. Some of them have taken the place of family for the wayward Ethaefal, and some have left shadows on his character that he won't soon forget.
Duvalyon Hellebore
The Symenestra medic Duvalyon treated Laszlo for a head injury at the Place of Purging in Kalinor, in the Spring of 510. Upon learning that Laszlo had no family and nowhere to go, he unexpectedly offered to let the Ethaefal stay with him and his Kelvic, Dor. Not only was Duvalyon the first Symenestra that Laszlo ever grew acquainted with, but he was the first person who had ever taken a personal interest in helping him. Despite Duvalyon's youth, he displays patience and wisdom beyond his years. Laszlo regards him as something of a mentor.
More recently, in the Spring of 512, Laszlo recruited Duvalyon's help and medical skill in a deeply personal crisis. After traveling to Lhavit, they now share an apartment along with Abalia, a human Alvad. Though this arrangement is only temporary, there is no definitive way of knowing how long it will last.
Seven Xu and Victor Lark
In Fall of 511, Laszlo first met Victor Lark, a human from Ravok, at the Cubacious Inn in Alvadas. With similar childlike mindsets, they were quickly friendly with one another and joined in a lighthearted game racing through the city streets and over rooftops. Later, outside the Bizarre in Alvadas, Laszlo also met Victor's companion, Seven Xu, a Lhavitian Dra-Symenestra. With his mixed racial heritage, Seven was neither truly Symenestra nor truly Human, which mirrored Laszlo's own in-between identity.
After a little convincing, the three of them partnered up and started their own Alvadas tavern, called the Sun and Stars. The demanding work environment put tension between Laszlo and the other two, as he became more aware of his role as a third wheel. Everything began falling apart when Laszlo found Victor and Seven in the middle of a cold-blooded murder, cruelly ending the life of a Kelvic raccoon named Roxanne. Learning that her death was legally sanctioned by Ionu's Wager, Laszlo kept quiet about it, but gradually any semblance of a friendship evaporated until he finally left Alvadas.
While relations between Laszlo and Seven are still mostly positive, there is a simmering loathing with an edge of fear felt toward Victor.
Abalia
Laszlo's relationship with Abalia has been one of both deep frustration and blissful contentment. He first met the human Alvad days after the death of Roxanne—Abalia's Kelvic bondmate. When Laszlo learned that Abalia was looking for her raccoon, he claimed ignorance and promptly decided to never associate with the girl again. Alvadas, however, has a life of its own, and seemed to keep pushing them together. Though Laszlo tried to keep away from her out of guilt, Abalia was fixated on him, inspired by her soft spot for Symenestra. Eventually his resistance eroded away, and he discovered that he was in fact very fond of Abalia's quirky and observant nature. Knowing that she had lost her only friend, the last of Laszlo's resolve was shattered by his profound remorse. He decided then that it was his responsibility to fill the hole that Roxanne had left.
Their budding romance soon met with disaster. Not only did Abalia learn the truth about Roxanne, and that Laszlo did indeed know what happened to her, but she also discovered that she was pregnant with Laszlo's child. He panicked, not out of fear of becoming a father, but because he did not know what traits his child would inherit from its Ethaefal parent. His mortal side was Symenestra, which seemed to pose a very likely possibility that childbirth could kill Abalia. Out of desperation, he brought her to Kalinor and begged Duvalyon for help. The three of them traveled to Lhavit, where they could do more research at the Bharani Library in hopes of saving Abalia's life. |
