Nai’a rushed to the room in which Lilia Allis was going to teach her about Herbalism. She was running a little late, due to the fact Meka was having a tantrum and did not want her to leave today. Nai’a could not help but smile at the protectiveness of that little monkey, but she also could not help but wonder what it was going to be like when she has a kid. Nai’a thought she would be a good mother, but she also had fears like anyone else taking on a great responsibility.

The Healer banished the thoughts from her mind, as she swung the door open and closed it behind her. Ms. Allis was already there, sitting at a long desk looking at her with an emotionless face.

Sorry I am late; it won’t happen again Ms. Allis.” Nai’a said a little pouty like, walking up slowly to the desk and sitting down on a smaller chair on the other side, facing Lilia.

”I am just glad you came and did not waste my valuable time. Anyways, let us get started.” Lilia cleared her throat and handing Nai’a a drawing of something that was very familiar. Brown Sea Weed, or what the locals called Kelp. Nai’a could not help but frown at the picture, then looked up at Lilia with a quizzical look upon her face.

”We are going to be talking about Kelp? As in.. like.. Kelp Beer, Kelp Tea…?” Nai’a asked the teacher, wondering why in the world they would be talking about this, how could it have any medicinal uses!

”Yes we are going to be talking about Kelp. It has medicinal uses, just people do not realize it. Don’t question me, I am the teacher and you are the student.” Lilia’s voice became slightly stern, but it was not mean or rude, just getting a point across. Nai’a just nodded her head, she thought it was crazy, but people warned her that Lilia was a loon so she would just have to suck it up and listen.

”Okay so… Kelp. Kelp is actually an effective herb to use for medicinal purposes. You see dear Nai’a it is abundant in the ocean, easy to get to, but there is a lot of people that are daft to the fact that they have healing properties right there at their reach. Anyways,..{/b] Lilia cleared her throat to get off the rant and back on to the subject, [b]”…As I was saying. Kelp can be used to treat arthritis. See us older folk suffer from swollen joints that become painful. And Kelp can but used as a topical treatment to sooth the effects of arthritis.” The professor rubbed her hands on the top, as if rubbing in Kelp lotion, or soothing old joints.

”But it also can help the … uh… larger people as well. Kelp can actually control the weight people gain either from a medical issue or just because they like to shove food down their throats.” Nai’a could not help but interrupt Lilia with a little giggle at how she described a large appetite, and Lilia looked over at Nai’a with mirth in her eyes and continued, ”But another thing it can be used for is to help open a woman’s cervix to make delivery easier for them, or if taken early it could kill the child in the womb.” Nai’a gasped a little at that one, her hands went to her stomach protectively at her words, Lilia’s knowing eyes gazed down at her stomach but then returned to gaze around the room, as if she did not realize.

”Ahem, anyways, those who take it can take it dried like as a tea or even can take it as a tincture. If you do not know what that is, it is just where they add it to alcohol, letting it dissolve in it. But there is a side effect that people are not so fond of, and that is that it loosen the bowels a bit.”

Nai’a kept quiet during the discussion of Kelp, a little shocked at the woman’s knowledge and also wondering if it was even true. She had after all swam in the ocean, and she had ate Kelp before (though it was horrible tasting). She never realized having the shits from eating it, but maybe everyone was different or, maybe it depends on the amount that is taken. Speaking of that raised a question with Nai’a, ”So what is the usual dosage for people to consume?” Nai’a asked in an inquisitive, soft, voice.

Lilia smiled brightly down at her student and replied, ”Ah yes I forgot, good question. Usually just two ounces of the tea twice a day and seven milliliters of tincture before a meal once a day. Now this does not mean you will not have loose bowels, but if one does experience the loosing of the bowels that could cut back the dosage a little to see if it helps ease their stomach.” Lilia folded her hands on her lips looking over at Nai’a as all the information sunk into her brain.

So it heals arthritis, helps people not gain weight, helps with delivery of a child, and can abort a child in the world during the early stage of pregnancy. Used as a tea or a tincture, dosage of tea is two fluid ounces twice a day, tincture is seven mLs once a day before a meal. Nai’a stayed quiet for a couple of chimes, repeating the information in her mind, making sure that it would stick. After three chimes she nodded her head with a bright smile, ”Alright I got it. I never knew Kelp could be so useful. I think the best thing about it is that it’s always there, it is not a seasonal herb like most of the others.”[b] Nai’a gave her professor a warm smile, [b]”Let us move on to the next topic, you are intriguing me.”

Lilia gave the Kelvic Healer a bright chuckle, ”Yes you are right, it is abundant and can be found in all seasons. People just do not realize that with in nature there are so many secrets, so many uses. But yes, let us move on to the next topic!” It seemed Lilia was also becoming excited, especially since her student was soaking up the information, and intrigued to learn more of what she had to offer her.

Lilia cleared her throat, Alright so the next item I would like to discuss can be found at the Snowpea Patch.” Lilia handed Nai’a another sheet of paper, with what looked to be a shallot on it, once again Nai’a’s eye brows climbed up her forehead.

”Wow… Really?” Nai’a asked a little unsure again at what the woman was doing. This class session was becoming more and more crazy.

Lilia sighed a little frustrated, ”I said do not question me. Look, you need to know about what can help others that is always at your grasp first. Then we will talk about the other herbs that are less likely to be found all year round.”

Nai’a gave the professor a small pout and nodded her head, mumbling ‘sorry’ as the woman went on.

”Anyways, Shallots have some medicinal properties to them that most people take for granted. Shallots green leafy parts on top are usually disregarded, because people are more concerned about the bulb. But it is with in these green leafy parts that contains the medicinal properties. The green leafy parts of the Shallot can as an anti-viral, meaning that it helps people from catching viruses. It also acts as anti-inflammatory which can be good for those suffering from arthritis, or really anything that is swollen, well almost anything. Another interesting tid-bit of information is that the leafy part can also help drunkards become sober.” Lilia cleared her throat then went on, ”You don’t really have to make a medicine out of this, it can just be eaten, or made into a salad to reap the benefits of it.”

Nai’a nodded her head during the lecture of the Shallot, blushed a little at Lilia’s ‘almost anything’, and then smiled at the end. ”Wow Ms. Allis, you are really surprising me with all these unique herbs. So the green leafy part is what needs to be harvested for medicinal purposes, not the bulb right?” Nai’a asked with a small smile on her face. Lilia nodded her head.

Nai’a once again took a few chimes, running the information over and over in her head, so she would not forget it. Then she smiled brightly, ”Go on to the next weird plant you’d like to introduce to me!” Nai’a said excitedly. This weird woman was a great choice as a professor. Though her style of teaching was a little awkward, Nai’a was absorbing the information faster than she expected she would, and was so proud of herself in being able to.

Herbalism 102: Unique Remedies. Pine.

Lilia could not help but chuckle at Nai’as enthusiasm to learn, and the fact that she called what she was teaching her strange. ”Okay so the next thing I would like to teach you is this.” Lilia handed Nai’a another sheet of paper that had what appeared to be pine bark drawn onto it. Nai’a frowned again, but this time she did not question her professor, she just nodded her head.

”So Zeltiva has Pine Trees that cover the higher elevations in the Zatoska Mountains. The bark from this trees are very useful when extracted properly. So I will be teaching a little bit of philtering with this one as well. Anyways, it acts as an antioxidant. Also this too can reduce inflammation as well as increase a person’s blood flow and circulation. So with the increased blood flow and circulation this could be really beneficial to males who… Well… Have problems with a certain private area, if you know what I mean.” Lilia spoke in her calm teacher’s voice, until the end she spoke a little softer, a little edgy trying to get her point across without being absolutely blunt about the topic. Nai’a’s face flamed, she knew what she was talking about, and it happened in older men quite a lot. She had had male patients come to the infirmary thinking they were cursed, not realizing it came with age. This information could really help her help some of the older men, make them a little happier, and feel less cursed.

Nai’a cleared her throat and nodded, letting her professor know she knew what she meant. Lilia cleared her own throat, ”Yes? Good. Well then. The only side effect that I know with this is maybe a little headache and a little bit of nausea, nothing too serious.” Lilia looked over at Nai’a, ”Now to make the extract you have to be really precise. So listen closely to what I am about to tell you, or you will be giving them this without it even helping them.” Lilia said this with a slightly stern voice, giving Nai’a a serious look. Nai’a nodded her head once again, letting the professor know that she was all ears.

”You want to have a cooking pot, place about six cups of water into it, let stay on the heat until it is bubbling, then you want to place about ten pieces of the bark into the bubbling water. Lower the heat to the pot, you do not want to kill the precious bark with the heat, so just let it simmer until you notice that there is less water in the pot. Once the water has evaporated you want to pour the bark stew into a bowl, with a thin piece of cloth over it so you can strain the bark out. You don’t want people to choke on the wood after all. Once you have done that you have extracted the ingredients with in the bark that will act as medicinal properties. So that is how you make the extract. The patient should take about three to four drops twice daily.” Lilia finished with her lecture on the pine bark, inhaling a deep breath and rubbing her throat.

Nai’a ran the information through her head, putting what she learned into her brain for good. So many unique ways of healing people, she would never forget them. It was amazing how much knowledge this woman had about such weird things, Nai’a really adored that.
”Wow that is amazing. Can people just eat the bark without the whole extracting thing?” Nai’a said excitedly.

”Yes they could eat it, though I am not sure if they would receive any medicinal uses from it, plus it would not be that savory to just eat. Perhaps if you grilled it, it wouldn’t be SO bad.” Lilia answered, her finger tapping her chin thinking about it. She soon shrugged her shoulders and smiled at Nai’a. ”Well it has been a little over a Chime and your next class will start in about an bell. So go take a break, absorb the information, and come back with a bell.” Nai’a was a little disappointed, she wanted to learn more, but she did need a little break. Too much information at once would just cause her to have a headache and not retain all the information.

”Yes Ma’m. Thank you so much for this lesson. I am so grateful that you have taken the time to teach me about this. See you in an Bell!” Nai’a spoke in a happy sing-songy voice as she rose from her seat, telling Lilia she would see her in a bell as she walked out of the door.

If it was hands on and you were doing as she instructed I would have granted XP. However since you were just learning I only gave you lore.
