Erik glanced up from his meal at Cisel, wracking his brain for anything he knew about glass, which amounted to absolutely nothing. Such was his ignorance of more civilized practices, truly it was rather embarrassing that he possessed ignorance in certain fields that even the youngest child knew about. Such was the price one paid for living outside of the civilized world for most of one's life. Ah well.

He favored her with a cordial smile, it was important to remain polite in all social situations or so his mother had taught him.

"I am afraid that I know next to nothing about glass, sorry. Most of my education is from outside of the city and how to survive beyond the walls. As such I find myself woefully ignorant of basic civilized customs and professions." Erik said, placing some of the meat in his mouth and chewing it thoughtfully.

It was not the best meat he had ever eaten but it was certainly better than travel rations. It tasted a little over cooked, and lacked some of the juices of most meats but it served its purpose, to regenerate his Djed.

"Do you make it out into the wilds often?" The young reimancer inquired politely, curious as to the woman's own experience outside the walls.
By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experiance, which is bitterest.

"I am afraid that I know next to nothing about glass, sorry. Most of my education is from outside of the city and how to survive beyond the walls. As such I find myself woefully ignorant of basic civilized customs and professions."

When Erik told her this, Cisel felt even more intrigued than she already had been feeling. People being ignorant about professions an in particular about glass wasn’t unusual. But if she understood this right, this very young man was saying he had spent so much of life in the wilds that he didn’t really know the basic civilized customs. That was unusual.

“I have been travelling for years” she said. “But I mostly went by boat. And I have not had any reason to leave Zeltiva and go out into the wilds.” She paused a bit before she went on. ”Perhaps I will go outside the town when I start to train my falcon. No matter she will only be able to hunt very small prey,I have a feeling it might be forbidden to hunt in the city …”

“Squeak!” Ata was getting impatient. Cisel hurried up and cut the raw fish into small pieces and started feeding the chick. The bird was utterly demanding and her table manners were terrible to say the least. Cisel was so occupied with this for a few minutes that she couldn’t speak.

“Most people don’t know so much about glass” she said. “I’m afraid I’m devoted to glass and could speak about it endlessly. It’s the most magical material there is. You can shape it into any shape you wish and make it be anything you dream about, once you know how to do it. But this takes many years to learn.” She smiled, and took time to eat some of her food now when Ata was busy with the raw fish falcon dinner.

“Are you living in the wilds?” she asked after a while. “With your family, your parents and siblings, friends ?” That, she thought, could explain things a bit. Perhaps someone else took care of the hunt and hard physical work, and protected the frail looking young man against wild animals. If he was a member of a tribe or family group living out there in the wilds …

An Epilogue for Cisel

Later in life when Cisel thought back at her dinner with the quiet and nice Eric Sylis and the not so nice and not so quiet little Ata she smiled at the memory. Ata had still been a chick at the time ...

It had been nice. She had liked the calm company of Eric albeit they had been two very different people and alas he hadn't been interested in glass. But it's never to late to become interestes in glass, perhaps it would come with time.

Oh, well, so many thought, and odd, odd Zeltiva memories, from a visit so brief, so brief, so brief ...

And the memory floated past in her mind, like memories do, and was gone.
