Description:

Visitors might wonder what kind of facility is hidden inside a building that looks like a giant spiny shell from the distance. Its milky white and sometimes pearlescent surface shimmers mysteriously in the sun and half a dozen spear-like spikes point several feet towards the sky. If asked, however, the residents would explain that it inhabited the best restaurant of Mura and official arch enemy of Pearl Divers. The architecture continues to impress if one explores the inside. Countless little rooms with arched walls and artistic and colorful decorations convey a feeling of isolated peace and solitude. Not a single noise is heard from the adjacent rooms. The furniture consists of a mixture of soft sandstone and white wood. Apparently pile upon pile of shell material is arranged upon one another, but somehow almost every surface room features at least one window letting in enough light. After Syna disappears and before She rises above the horizon cream candles are provided for a cozy atmosphere. When the weather is well, customers are able to sit in a little garden that hugs the building from all sides. Small ponds with colorful fish and miniature coral reefs create a curious as well as soothing nature feeling and white trees with the occasional vian one in between cast shadows over the benches and tables carved out of their very wood.

The restaurant is owned and led by two close friends who started out as a small café back when Mura was still closed to outsiders but could expand with the influx of tourists during the latest couple of years. Nowadays Forest Meridian House is a mixture between café, restaurant and nightlife location. Despite the fact that most daytime customers are tourists – some patients of the Opal Order recommended to support the healing process with a healthy diet –, during the night the Konti reclaim the location and descend through an unassuming staircase populated with exotic fish, corals and various other underwater plants. The light some of those produce combined with reimancy fires and free snacks make an excellent meeting and dancing location. Almost everyone has found oneself dancing through the night at least once during their youth.

And like every successful location, Forest Meridian House has its fair share of rumors ranging from a ghost in the highest rooms to an oath sworn to Laviku in exchange for the magnificent underwater disco.

NPCS:

Pu'veo :

ImageIn her childhood and youth, Pu’veo has been notorious for her love for parties and handsome men. She’d through parties at her mother’s house and invite half Mura for a night of glitter, dancing and socializing. She’d also know every foreigner who was staying in Mura and try to seduce them into her bed. Fortunately she never sired a child from her one-night-stands – or maybe she did and managed to get rid of them quick enough. When growing older, she tried out several artforms and crafts and learned from several mistresses, but nothing truly caught her interest. During those excursions into the world of arts she met Jalka. Together the two of them developed the idea of a café and social hot spot. Pu’veo hopes to establish a glamorous nightlife like she has experienced in Ahnatep.

Gnosis Marks: Avalis - 1

Skill List: Dancing, - 60 pts, Seduction – 48 pts, Hospitality – 35 pts

Jalka :

ImageJalka has always been unassuming and introverted, although she found a passion for inner architecture, design and painting. Contrary to the ordinary artist, she has never left Mura though, learning and drawing inspiration from other artforms and the architecture of her ancestors. At the age of fifty, after a five-year pause from creating, she presented the community with surprisingly extraordinary designs. That resulted in a sudden career boost and several commissions for the mothers circle. A major part of the buildings created after the opening of Konti Isle to the mainland has been designed by her, for example Silver Velispar Emporium or Pearl Divers Inn. When meeting Pu’veo, though, she got hooked by the younger woman’s vision and indulged in designing a unique and eccentric location.

Gnosis Marks: Avalis - 1

Skill List: Architecture – 69 pts, Interior Design – 62 pts, Painting – 55 pts, Research – 34 pts

Meridian Forest House

Postby Na'tala on June 17th, 2013, 1:34 pm

-- Summer 1st, 513AV --

Nat walked purposefully towards the building, half nervous, and half excited. She was finally going to work doing the thing she loved... cooking! But... was she good enough? It was a popular restaurant, what if she wasn't a good enough chef to work there? She knew her sister, Es, was a better cook, so it was obvious she wasn't the best. But Es didn't work... she enjoyed the lack of responsibility. Thinking on it.. this was possibly one of the first major things she was doing without following her twin. It was strangely refreshing. But still... she might not get accepted.

The young Konti, when entering, was once again amazed by the interior of the restaurant. She'd visited several times before, but every time... it was just beautiful, and magnificently designed. The furniture was soft and comforting, and the walls covered with bright decorations. It was a nice place, very soothing, and brought a smile to Nat's face.

She approached one of the people she knew as an owner, her anxiety growing. What if she wasn't good enough for them... what if they didn't need a chef? Despite her doubts, she put on a cheerful face and asked "Hello! Um... I was wondering... I'm a decent chef. I was hoping I could get a job cooking here...." She wasn't quite sure how well she'd set up the request, but the Konti hoped it didn't sound too rude... it wasn't intended to be, at least. She did slightly doubt her powers of persuasion though. Es was always the one better at that stuff.

The female Na'tala addressed was slim, with short hair in a tousled mess above her hair, and dark almost wild looking eyes. She had been aimlessly rifling through some paper work, lazily reclining over a chair before the young Konti had walked in, and now her attention was focused quite readily on the new comer.

"You're not a spy for the Pearl Diver's Inn are you?" Her face was serious for a moment, but as she saw Na'tala pause Pu'veo's mouth split open in a grin. "Don't worry, I greet all prospectives that way. Have to always stay on your toes in the Restaurant business, I'm Pu'veo, by the way, owner in part of this fine establishment." She examined Na'tala in a curious way, smile becoming warmer.

"A cook aye? I think Jalka has said something about needing a cook." She rose languidly from her spot on the couch and gestured to Na'tala to vist her, weaving her way through the maze of ponds, tables, and decorations as if she had been born in the Nightclub. A few tourists were seated, having meals of Kelp snacks or fish and crackers. Pu'veo stopped at each one, leaning over her guests in a welcoming manner to make sure everything was fine, and to ask them if they wanted more drinks.

Once they passed the small procession of customers she turned to Na'tala. "So...what made you choose the Meridian House, aye? Wanted in on the Night life? Interested in Interior Design as well?" Though her stance and posture were relaxed, Pu'veo's gaze showed genuine interest. After all, she had to understand the goals and intentions of any prospective employees.

Nat blinked in surprise at the immediate accusation. She wasn't quite sure what to think, except that she remembered quite a bit of competition between the two... She shook her head vigorously, including a quick "Nope!". At least it turned out that it wasn't something about her that was the problem...

She smiled again at the introduction, and responded in kind. "I'm Na'tala.... but it's just Nat for short" she explained, feeling her nickname would be easier. Once motioned, the Konti followed Pu'veo humbly, watching her carefully and keeping a nice smile on her face. Even if she wasn't an employee yet, it was always good to stay friendly... and she wanted to put up a good face for her (hopefully) future employer.

Hearing the next question, she had to think for a bit. In truth, she was mostly here to... well, cook, and she knew this was one of the best places to do it. "Well... mostly I just love cooking, but I love the way this place looks... All the decorations and everything! But mostly cooking." She wanted to be truthful, but was slightly uncertain. Her preference hadn't really been either of the things mentioned... and in truth, she didn't really care for the night life here. She preferred the calm, rather than partying, though she had enjoyed the few nights she'd spent here with her sister.

Something occured to her, and she asked "Are you asking me this to figure out why I chose here, rather than the Pearl Diver's?" It was more of a joke than anything, and she put a wide grin on her face to show so. But had she pulled it off well? With all this... what if she'd completely put Pu'veo off her? Es was always better with talking with people... she never messed up. She could always do everything so much better. Nat sighed once, quietly, but tried to hope for the best in an answer.

"So, just cooking with little other ulterior motive, good, good." Pu'veo grinned, winding her way through the pathways until she reached a set of painted wooden doors that hung off the ground. A flying deer was soaring across them, some of the flora of Mura twining up from the bottom of the wood. Before she entered her slim shoulders bunched in a shrug. "That is partly the reason. If you were more suited to an inn atmosphere, I would be curious as to why you came to us."

Without waiting for a reply, Pu'veo pushed through them to reveal a mid sized kitchen area filled with drawers, clean white marble counters, and overhanging shelves and cabinets for food and dish storage. Another Konti was sitting at one of the counters, twiddling her fork in a bowl of rice, covered with some sort of syrup. She looked up curiously as Pu'veo entered, and Nat'ala's guide introduced them.

"Jalka, this is Na'tala, or Nat for short, Na'tala this is Jalka, the other half of the Forest Meridian House." She gently squeezed Na'tala's shoulder. "Nat here, wants a job with us as a chef."

Jalka's mouth split in a small smile. "Pleasure to meet you Na'tala. I've been telling Pu'veo we're in dire need of a good cook. Perhaps you are the answer to our prayers, as it were."

Pu'veo chuckled. "Perhaps." She began working her way around the kitchen. If Nat took a closer look she would see one of the stoneware tops was made of a slick black stone, which was currently heating a pot of water for tea. Pu'veo started pulling out ingredients from beneath the counters and up on high: A cutting board, knives, frozen fish, vegetables of all kinds, mostly Mura native, a few bottles of herbs and spices, cheeses of a few varieties, and even cracked open a bottle of a fine white wine, of which she poured three glasses. Jalka watched, seemingly amused yet unsurprised by her partner's antics, and once Pu'veo was finished, she opened her arms.

"Alright!" She exclaimed excitedly. "Show us what you've got. We generally sell meals that range in price from 1 GM to 5, let's say you make me one...worth at least 3 GM, you can do whatever you fancy."

Both Konti sat behind the counter, sipping their wine, and began chatting with each other about...was it new paint for the walls? Regardless, it was clear they were hear to observe, but not hinder the process of Nat's cooking. Now...that was up to her.

oocAlright, show us some of those cooking skills! You can pretty much utilize whatever you want for this, even if I haven't mentioned it. Imagine this kitchen is furnished with anything Nat might need, and impress your future employers!

Nat smiled at the conversation, and greeted Jalka politely. "It's a pleasure to meet you too! I'm glad you need a chef" she said, grinning slightly. These two were so happy... it made her feel better. She watched with interest as Pu'veo provided a large quantity of cooking supplies, starting to get a feeling that there was going to be some kind of test... they obviously couldn't hire her, if they didn't know if she could actually cook, right?

Luckily, she'd sort of been thinking about this, and had brought her recipe book... just in case. She pulled it out, thinking about what to make. A three gm meal... that would be something like a main, but made of more common things... Maybe she could make something simple with fish... breaded. With a seaweed salad on the side? Though... fish was common here, maybe she could add a desert. Well, that could be thought of later. She flipped through the fish section of her book, which was quite extensive, considering the amount of fish she actually ate. She found one she'd eaten many times before, with a sort of lemony dressing... it was very tasty, but simple too. She opened the book wide on the counter, and set to work.

The Konti grabbed a pre-gutted fish, and a knife. She cut the meat up into strips, carefully slivering off the scales. It wouldn't be boneless... but it wasn't too much of a problem. The sections were about 2 inches wide, and five long, perfect for a simple meal. But for one person... she'd only need two of them. Nat looked for the two best, which happened to be in the middle and moved them over to the side, onto a pan. The others she left there, in case they might use them later. She carefully re-read the dressing recipe, and began finding all the necessary materials. She pulled breadcrumbs from the shelves, grabbed a few lemons, and even a bottle of cooking white wine. There was also a variety of herbs needed, and she found those too, putting all her ingredients on the table.

She quickly cut and juiced the lemons, attempting to get as much liquid out of them as possible. Taking a mortar and pestle, she mixed the herbs, pounding them until they were finely ground. She then added a large quantity of bread crumbs to the bowl and mixed that too, but was careful not to squish them too much. They added a lot of texture to the fish, and she didn't want to get rid of that... Once they were mixed, she added moisture with the lemon juice, and a tiny bit of the wine for flavor. She used a spoon to let the liquids absorb into the bread, though there was some left over at the bottom. That she could sprinkle over the top at the end...

She spread the bread, lemon, wine, and herb mixture over her two chosen pieces of fish, careful to keep the cover even. She left the bottoms, but still went over the sides. She scrutinized her work, thinking about what she'd missed. Well... she had to cook them, first. Nat went to the oven and stuffed some wood in it, to get it to around the right temperature. Whilst waiting, she moved onto the next part.

The seaweed salad was easy. In a bowl, she mixed sections of the dried plant, peanuts, and a little bit of lemon grass. She also added a sprinkling of the lemon juice, to give it a similar flavor. The Konti grabbed a plate and dumped her finished salad onto it, leaving ample room for the fish.

Now time for the desert... what could she make for that? She racked her brain, and flipped through the desert section of her book. Strudel? No... cake? No... She didn't want something too sweet, but... it was a dessert. She didn't want to add another salad to the mix... Maybe... a macaroon! Those were always fun to make, and not too sweet. She grinned, and began searching the cupboards for coconut. There was a convenient bag hidden somewhere, and she pulled it out, also grabbing eggs and sugar.

Turning to her recipe, she mentally halved it, since it was only for one person. She mixed the desired quantities, taking a few moments to separate the egg whites from the yolks. She stirred for a few chimes until it was sticky, and stiff, before grabbing it with her hands. She molded it into a pair of cookie shapes, flat disks, though slightly bumpy. She placed them on another cooking pan, this one much smaller.

Now that the oven was completely heated, she put both the macaroons and the fish inside, since both, conveniently, required the same amount of time. About fifteen chimes. Nat turned to her two potential employers and grinned. She wasn't quite sure if it was what they wanted... was it too simple? To extravagant? The meal was something that she personally enjoyed eating... and there was always room for the dessert at the end. It would also be easy to make in large quantities... just cut more fish, mix more salad, and use more to make the macaroons. Still... the Konti watched Pu'veo and Jalka, worrying about their answer.

While trying to remain casual, it was clear that the two were observing Na'tala. Every now and then she noticed a nod of approval, or an interested smile, though neither made any comments, merely keeping up a casual banter as they waited.

As their prospective cook turned away from the oven she would notice both of them picking experimentally at the salad.

"The nuts are a nice addition." Jalka said softly.

"I bet this would taste good with almonds...or macadamia nuts as well!" Pu'veo agreed. They both looked up and chuckled.

"It's a fine job so far, Nat." Jalka smiled and got up. She moved from cabinet to cabinet, taking out some nicer plates and silverware. She daintily moved the salad to a new plate, wrapping utensils in a fine cloth napkin.

She reclined against the stove. "We will of course allow you your own measure of creativity here, to experiment with menus and recipes at your leisure. This place wouldn't have gotten anywhere without being a little different." She slid a thin cloth covered book out of one shelf that was undoubtedly some of the recipes she had just mentioned.

From the other side of the oven, however, Pu'veo was removing the now done fish and macaroons. "Ooh, these smell wonderful!" She scooped the macaroons onto a smaller plate, sliding the fish next to the salad. Jalka was lifting a fork to try them, but clearly Pu'veo had other plans. Taking the dishes with her she strode out from the kitchen and into the main eating area.

"Well...this is certainly one way to test your cooking." Jalka muttered to Nat. She seemed slightly exasperated at the candor of her partner, but gestured for Nat to follow her in order to see what happened next.

A couple of human traders were reclined on either side of a small round table, and Pu'veo placed the dish in front of them. "A new sample on the house." She smiled sweetly. The few macaroons she passed out to other guests that were done with their meal.

The delight for the cookies was immediate, simple, but sweet, they were the perfect after meal snack. The two traders took a little longer with their meal, but their reactions were quite similar, and they thanked Pu'veo warmly for the light meal.

The enigmatic Konti turned to see Jalka and Na'tala standing, waiting for her. She grinned. "Well, sister, I'd say you're hired, when's the earliest we can have you in and working?"

Nat had grinned widely at their compliments, glad that everything had turned out well. She took in their criticism about the salad, and when there was time, jotted a few notes down on that recipe.

When Pu'veo began bringing the meal outside, to give to customers, Na'tala started, surprised. That was a big risk... what if it was horrible? She could ruin their business.. lose them a bunch of customers. Then she'd never get a job! Everything would fall to pieces.. she worried frantically as she watched, but kept a big smile on her face when near the customers. To her delight, however, the traders and other restaurant-goers loved the meal. Her smile turned a lot more truthful then, glad that everything had worked out despite her hopes. Es would have just breezed through this though... that caused a slight sigh to escape the Konti, but she tried to hide it.

She heard Pu'veo's question, and relaxed even more. She was hired! "Uh... tomorrow works for me, as I really have nothing else..." she told them with a grin, glad that they seemed excited to have her. She really couldn't wait to get on the job... and cook to her heart's (and imagination's) content.

OOCSo... I guess this is it then? (and sorry for the short post...)

Pu'veo grinned. "That's what I was hoping to hear." She offered her hand for a shake to complete the deal, her grip firm, yet warm.

"Come in early tomorrow, we'll get you organized in the kitchen and work you in the mornings for the first few days before introducing you to the night life." Jalka inclined her head in agreement to this decision, and both of them seemed quite pleased as Na'tala left the stylish restaurant.
