Anna disliked having to jump through hoops, it annoyed her to no end when a seemingly simple affair was made overly complex and difficult. It had been extremely difficult to acquire the aged book before her, a test of patience and bargaining really. Lisaelis was not normally one to give her trouble in accessing restricted tomes and looking over what she wished, this had been an exception. From a logical and rational stand point, Anna realized exactly why she was so flustered when the wizard had asked to borrow the aged book for a few days. The volume was one of a kind after all, a rare book that provided insight into the discipline of spiritism from the writing of one experienced in the art. The librarian had been hesitant to let her even look over it in the library, let alone take it out for a spell. Ricken Solivar had only written one account on spiritism, the volume sitting on Anna's table was it.

It had taken a lot of bargaining, copious amounts actually, to finally get by on a rental. For the price of fifteen gold mizas the librarian was allowing her to rent the book for one day, with the warning of dire consequences should the book suffer any harm. Anna had made worse deals in her life, so she gladly accepted and was out of the library quickly.

After all of that effort here she finally sat in her home, carefully handling the pages of the volume with utmost delicacy. The discipline of spiritism was something she possessed little knowledge in, she knew more about ghosts from her meeting with Elaine but that in itself did not denote knowledge in Spiritism. What she did know was that spiritism was used to handle and defend against the undead, and that by experiencing possession over and over again one could build resistance to ghosts trying to take over one's body.

So the wizard realized she needed to know more, which brought her here, looking through Ricken's writings for scraps of useful knowledge. One particular entry caught her eye, one that detailed creation of soulmist. From what Anna recalled hearing from Elaine, soulmist was the substance that took the place of a ghost's Djed after death or it was their Djed, just in a different form. The substance had seemed specific to ghosts at the time, though Ricken was giving her information that indicated otherwise.

Sometimes I found it necessary to work with ghosts, while I'm known for fighting them some became my greatest companions and friends. They were truly unsung heroes, though I suppose the same is true for me. To help them out I'd give them soulmist I created. Soulmist is what allows a ghost to interact with the world around them, when they run out of soulmist then they cannot do much of anything. Any spiritist worth his salt can make soulmist.

My favorite recipe and one that is the most common is to use an egg, flour, and soft cheese. However, it is likely that one could experiment with other recipe's, the point is that they need to be three foods from three different sources. From there you need to create a dough out of them, this can be done in a bowl or your mouth if you can choke it in.

Once you have the dough, you need to keep it inside the body for a while to achieve the desired results. You need to focus on actually trying to create soulmist in order for it to work effectively, if your new to it don't expect instant success. If you succeed you'll get a white gel like substance, this is the soulmist. Ghosts love the stuff, giving it to them will make them quite happy and is useful in negotiations with one. Diplomacy is often the best course when handling ghosts.

The wizard scanned over the volume and nodded slowly to herself at this, this might indeed be useful information. Elaine had been... less than friendly to her during their meeting in the library, perhaps creating usable soulmist for the ghost might give her cause to warm up to her. It was certainly something worth investigating, Anna made a mental note to attempt to create soulmist at a later date.

As Anna returned to looking over the volume a slight chill traced its way down her spine, an ill feeling that was oddly familiar. It was much like the feeling she had gotten when Elaine got too close to her, unnatural.

"Oh my love, why do you continue on this path?" A voice called out from all around her.

The wizard immediately stood, knocking her chair down to the floor and started searching about with wide eyes. Someone was spying on her, another ghost perhaps? It seemed to make logical sense, Elaine had demonstrated the powers of ghosts enough for Anna to know that even if you did not see it did not mean they were not there.

The voice itself had sounded familiar, plucking at strings deep within her heart. Strings that had long since been left forgotten in the recent months, memories from events that seemed a lifetime away. It couldn't be...

Out of the corner of her eye Anna noticed a shape forming, surrounded by a misty substance. Surprise and self defense were thoughts that immediately came to mind, Djed was willed to her right hand and pushed outwards, res quickly pooling in her palm. The hasty action sent waves of euphoria and the urge to cast, reimancy was never something where quick casting was a good idea.

The urge and any other thoughts in her brain immediately came to a grinding halt as she looked upon the specter before her. Res dripped from her hands and on to the floor, thoughts of control abandoned as her eyes widened in shock and disbelief.

The ghostly figure looked to be sitting on her bed, transparent though recognizable. Thick black hair fell about her face gracefully, dull grey eyes looked upon the tall wizard with concern and sorrow. Her face was rather plain and its features echoed Anna's in most way. For the first time in a long time Anna was utterly speechless.

The ghost smiled slightly, one that gave feelings of sadness rather than feelings of joy or amusement.

"It has been some time. It is good to see you again, my daughter." The apparition said.

Echoes from the past

Shock. That was what she felt here, coupled with complete and utter disbelief at the sight in front of her. Her mother, Liana Marin, was dead. Anna, of all people, knew this and had accepted the fact that she was never going to come back some time ago. Bitterly had the wizard accepted that the plague had stolen her family from her, leaving a hole in her heart that was filled by Rhysol's truth. Now, to look upon her own mother's ghost was something that was all too overwhelming emotionally.

Disbelief quickly turned to soul crushing sorrow as the memory of her mother's passing slammed back into her. Her loss had been worse than her father's, who was one of the first victims of the plague. Conversely, her mother had been one other last, stolen from the wizard as the plague came to an end. Tears welled in her eyes despite her best efforts, rolling slowly down her cheeks. It had been a long time since she had last cried, however there was no stopping this emotional wave that consumed every thought that tried to avert it.

The tall woman stumbled forward, reaching out a hand to the ghostly specter of her mother. The ghost's sad smile was in place as she mimicked the motion, her form becoming more solid and corporeal looking. Anna lightly touched the offered hand, feeling a slight buzz throughout her body as she made contact. The feeling only lasted for a moment as the ghost dematerialized a moment later, the mist surrounding her diminished from the act.

Anna fell to her knees, this was all to real. Her mother, one of the only people in this world Anna had been able to trust and love unconditionally was a ghost, one returned from the grave. She had returned when Anna had thought her lost forever, stolen by Vayt's fell hand. It was too much to process all at once so the wizard simply sat there and cried, sniffling miserably. She wanted to throw her arms around her mother and embrace her like she had done so many times before, sadly she knew this was impossible given her mother's current state.

After a time, she looked up at her mother who merely watched her with a patient look often used when Anna had been frightened or sad and cried into her arms. Finally the wizard started to try and form shaky syllables, fearing her tongue would betray her.

"M-mother? You- you've returned from death." The wizard said, trembling slightly as the words left her mouth.

Were she in a more clear minded position, Anna might have felt some disgust at herself for acting like a little girl. However, there was only so much dignity one could act with when confronted by the sight of her own undead mother. Even she had her limits.

"I have indeed, Anna. It has taken me some to gather enough strength to be able to speak with you. Until now I was merely watching. I cannot describe the joy I feel in speaking with you now." Liana said, her smile becoming less sad and more content.

"Why? Why have you returned to me?" The wizard asked.

"Are you complaining, Anna?" The specter asked, her spectral face showing hints of amusement.

Anna snorted slightly at that, only her mother would deflect such a question with humor. Of course she was not complaining! This was indeed a rather happy thing for her, once the thoughts of her mother's death faded. Though, it was also reason to cause worry to stir in the wizard's heart. According to Elaine, ghosts were those who rejected the cycle of life and death. Anna was no fan of Dira, if she could cheat death and remain in Rhysol's favor than she would do so in a heart beat. However she had to wonder what cause her mother would have to reject Dira.

"I- not exactly mother. I'm just a little shaken up. I suppose that will happen when one's mother returns from beyond the grave." The wizard replied.

"I suppose it will at that. Take as much time as you need, I'm not going anywhere, my child." The woman said, her hand materializing briefly yet again to stroke Anna's head.

The buzz filled her body again, it was no where near as unpleasant as when Elaine had touched her. Could it be that her mother was a weaker ghost? How was the power of ghost's measured? The academic thoughts returned through the haze of sorrow and joy, raw emotions she had long kept bottled up inside.

Anna slowly stood from the floor and seated herself beside her mother, her normal awareness returning to her. Thoughts were now whirling about in her head at a hundred miles per hour, her mother's return heralded more and more questions. She needed to gather her thoughts before speaking to her mother, she needed to think this whole thing out.

Echoes from the past

Anna felt oddly both happy and saddened that her mother was sitting on the bed next to her, a paradox of emotions that left her feeling confused. She was beyond happy to have the chance to talk with her mother once more, to spend time with her once again. However, deep down she knew that this was different and would be very different than if her mother was alive. The wizard knew enough of the sad state that ghosts lived in to know that it was likely a torment to some and a second chance to others. To drift on Mizahar until they found some way to rejoin the cycle of life and death, it seemed rather torturous to even Anna.

Having the opportunity to look at this situation from a logical stand point, it seemed something of a blessing. Not only was her mother returned from Dira's embrace but she was a member of the race that was the current subject of her research. Perhaps if she could mere run some tests...

The wizard shook that thought from her mind almost immediately, she was not going to run tests of the strengths and weaknesses of ghosts on her own mother. The was no petching way that was going to happen, not anytime soon. Anna wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and regarded her mother for a good long while.

"I notice that you avoided answering my question, mother. What binds you to this world?" Anna asked pointedly.

The spirit seemed to consider the question seriously for the moment, appearing to be deep in thought as to how best answer it. Anna had expected a scolding for the rather rude question, perhaps death had indeed changed her mother in ways.

"I only know that when I... woke up I felt the urge to seek you out immediately, Anna. If you think it surprised you imagine what I felt when I woke up. Waking up as a ghost is not exactly a pleasant experience." Her mother responded with a light chuckle.

Her capacity to make light of the situation was admirable, however Anna found that the answer was rather unsatisfying. Was that urge tied to the reason her mother now remained? If so what did that mean for Anna? Did her mother possess some unfinished business with her that she could not complete in life? Was she merely seeking out the daughter she loved more than anything?

Without answers, those questions echoed in her mind for some time, annoying the wizard. She shook her head and focused on her mother once more, dispelling any doubts she still had. Petch the natural cycle, her mother was returned to her and that was all that mattered really. If Dira took issue with that then Anna would have a few choice words for the goddess of death.

"There is no need to worry over me, my daughter, I am fine. It is you I am most concerned about. I have been watching you for some time and noticed rather disturbing things." Her mother said somberly, her gaze falling upon her daughter's heart.

Anna's heart skipped a beat, she knew about her conversion to Rhysol's creed! No one was supposed to know, it was a dark secret that Anna kepted locked far inside of her. Her mother knew however and from the sounds of it she was less than pleased. The wizard stood abruptly and started pacing about nervously.

"What else was I supposed to do mother? If I did not betray Velia then I would never have gotten the position and the knowledge I possess today. I've been marked by Rhysol himself, a god! Selected by him to bear a fraction of his divine power! You should be proud!" The tall woman exclaimed, defending herself before the accusations started flying.

"Proud? You betrayed your best friend, Anna. You serve the god of all things evil. You've tortured people, demeaned them, threatened and bullied them. I am not proud. I am disappointed." The ghost replied sternly, in a tone Anna cringed to hear.

The words were rather crushing to hear, the weight of disappointment from her own mother was rather heavy on her shoulders. In a way, she felt rather like the times when her mother had scolded her over doing something extremely foolish. The word 'disappointed' was one she had grown to loath in her younger years. She still hated to hear it now, after everything she had done.

"I control powers beyond the imagination of most mortals, I can open portals to another dimension for the gods sake! I'm more now than I ever was, why are you not proud of that?" Anna demanded, feeling rather hurt.

Her mother stood fluidly and in one swift motion, her expression looking very displeased.

"I never approved of you learning those strange magic's, now look at what they have driven you to. I heard you crying out, your mind warped and harmed by this fell magic. My heart was wrenched and I wanted to comfort you from the pain you were inflicting upon yourself. No mother should have to watch their child go through such horrors." Liana said, her words strong and striking at deep parts of Anna's mind.

Anna stood silent at her mother's rebuttal, refuting it was rather difficult considering her own self doubts that had existed. At the time she had wanted to die when she experienced the pain of overgiving. As such any answer Anna could come up with rung hollow in her own mind so she didn't answer, instead she walked back over to the bed and seated herself. Liana joined her once again, her expression softening ever so as she watched her daughter, both women deep in thought.

Echoes from the past

It was a long while before either of the two women spoke again, they were both simply wrestling with their own problems. Anna was the one to finally break the silence, her discomfort at the way her own mother viewed her apparent. It was an odd thing, her mother was back and instead of joy all she had was confusion and a wrenching feeling in her gut. Disappointing others was one thing, but her mother had been there from the very beginning. It was from her loins that she had sprung, Liana had brought her into this world. Disappointing her was something else entirely.

Still, Anna was a grown woman now, she had made her own decisions in life and did the things that had been best for her. There was no way she was going to abandon her magic, and certainly no way she was going to give up her faith. Though, some tiny part of her could indeed see her mother's point. Her own magic had nearly destroyed her, if things had been but a little different then she might not be sitting beside her mother. The doubt was small but there, a seed planted and set to grow in time.

"Mother. I love you more than anything in this world, my heart soars now that you have come back to me. However, the choices I have made were mine own to make. I am a wizard and I am a worshiper of Rhysol. There is not changing that and there is no changing me. If you do indeed still love me you will have to accept that part of me now." Anna said, turning to look her mother in the eye.

Her spectral face looked sad and melancholic, as though she had expected this answer from her daughter. It pained Anna to admit to herself that she herself was saddened slightly by the very sight.

"I see. I do not accept that, my daughter, but I will try to tolerate it. I will make you see, Anna. I will bring you back, I swear it." The ghost said with conviction.

The wizard allowed a ghost of a smile to play at her lips, amused by the words. Bringing her back was likely impossible at this point, she would never again be that kind and normal girl. This was who she was, down to her black heart and core. She was manipulative, evil, and destructive. Rhysol had been right in that she had enjoyed the act of betraying Velia, in that act she had displayed her true colors. She had manipulated the situation to suit her needs, she had manipulated her friend, and she had switched up her plan and acted well on her feet when an investigation was called in. A normal person did not accomplish such a thing, a good person did not do something like that.

The old her was never coming back because she had never really existed in actuality. It had all been a mask she had been taught to wear, a suppression against her true nature. However if she told her mother that then any hope she might have held on to in death would be gone, so she did something that was now an easy part of her character. She lied.

"I hope you do mother. I really do."

Notes

I didn't give you a point in reimancy in that first post, since you're now expert, and it would be a relatively simple action. Otherwise, it was pretty funny! It was literally "What would your late mother think, Anna??" and coming up with an answer. Poor Anna though. I wonder if she has any regrets after that...
