[Aka's Cave] Magical Doodles

Aka's Cave, Residential Wing, 20th of Bell, 40th of Summer 513 A.V

The Viper sat there on a chair facing a table, playing around with a stand of her hair. A book, brush, and a box in front of her. A frowned, serious, and not to mention, confused expression on her face. She picked up the book and skimmed through it again, mumbling words like "Glyphing", "Focus", and "Runes", an experienced wizard would know that she was reading something that was related to Glyphing, a branch of World Magic. With a groan, she put down the book again. "Why isss it soooo complicated?! Arrrgh!" She basicallly pulled at both of her twintails, frustrated.

Unlike Reimancy, glyphing requires "theory" in the same measure as "practice", one couldn't just throw res around here and there with Glyphing. One must learn to carefully construct a rune and determine what it was for. Aka had heard of Glyphing from Galbern before, but never bothered to actually listen to his lessons, she didn't thought she would need this "boring" magic, but now... with her current life in a Nest surrounded by Myrians, she needed every help she could get to boost her powers. She asked Sister Senescaaspia, her Boss, about what was the easiest (and safest) way to make her cast res faster and easier, Aspia gave a simple answer "Glyphing"... Oh by Siku, why it must be Glyphing?

Still, she better swallow her laziness and accepted Aspia's advice, so there she went to the Fence, asking for a book and essential items to draw her first rune. To her shock, this dusty old book about Glyphing costed fifty gold mizas! Aka almost face-palmed. Stil, she had no choice, it was a take-it-or-leave-it deal. The Fence's giant muscular Dhani body sure didn't help her poor excuse of a haggling attempt. Saying good bye to her poor mizas, she bought the book, along with a tiny brush and a pot of inscribing paint. Good thing this book was written in Common... probably a copy of the original written in Ancient Tongue.

Back to Aka's room. After some temple rubbing, Aka picked up the book and skimmed through it again, before settling herself to the beginning, containing the very basics of Glyphing.

"Glyphing is a discipline of world magic that allows the user to draw mystic runes and symbols, forming sigils and pictures. These runes have no power of their own, but can manipulate magic from another discipline, for example storing, releasing, channeling, deflecting or confining a spell."

Fair enough, Aka knew about that, her eyes skipped over the unnecessary history about it and found another interesting paragraph.

"Because it does nothing but affect other magic, it is not advised to take Glyphing as one's first discipline. It is better to learn something else first, and then take Glyphing to interact with it."

Now this is what she was looking for. She had her Reimancy and she would use this world magic mainly for hasting the process of exhuming res from her palms. Perhaps she would paint them over her eye-shaped scar marks, making them more pretty in the process. Blinking twice, Aka opened another page... intent on making her first basic glyph by tonight.

[Aka's Cave] Magical Doodles

A few chimes later, Aka was now reading the general use of Glyphing, she somewhat knew it was for storing and channeling magic, but did it have other uses? Her slitted scarlet eyes locked themselves into a written list on a particular page.

"The runes can accomplish the following:
-Store magic
-Release magic upon activation of a trigger
-Restrict magic into a fixed space
-Channel magic into an area, target or path
-Split the effects of magic
-Combine the effects of magic
-Stabilize wild magic"

Her attention was grabbed by the fourth point of the list Hmmm... 'Channel magic into an area, target or path'... She had the general idea now, this glyph she would make would assist the flow of her djed to her palms, making the process faster and requiring less concentration, though she didn't expect much with her mostly non-existent experience in drawing runes, the few seconds boosted by the glyph could mean the difference between life and death in a combat situation.

She knew the uses, now she needed to know the correct steps to paint a glyph for real, she scoured the book for more knowledge, keeping the urge to just throw it down and go to sleep. Her main motivation? It costed fifty gold mizas. Well, being more powerful is the secondary reason, but it was mostly because of the former. After a few chimes, she found what she was looking for "Glyphs and Sigils".

"Glyph is the official name for a rune. Runes drawn by different mages will look very different, but wizards can instinctively know their meaning. Glyphs can be drawn in any way, be it with ink, blood, sand or ashes; carved, painted or sculpted.

Once the power of a glyph has been exhausted, it will break. Scrolls may crumble, paint will disappear, stone might crack. In long-lasting experiments, sigils have to be replaced quite often."

"I see..." She muttered out loud, so the runes she would draw on her palms would not last forever. Well, it seemed far-fetched to think a simple drawing could be permanently fixated on her, they were made of ink after all, at least for this particular glyph. Blood? Aka cringed, who would draw runes using blood? Then the thought of a mage having no access to ink while needing to draw a glyph came to her mind. Emergency situation it is... It was the only case Aka would accept the drawings of glyph using blood.

After she pondered the information long enough, Aka moved on to the next subject, "Sigils".

"A sigil is a collection of glyphs that performs a given task. They range from very simple to very complex, but in general will feature one or more of the following building blocks.

-Focus: A single, large glyph that stores magic. When magic flows into the Focus, it disappears until released. The Focus can be thought of as a mirror: if a fireball is thrown into it, it will be expelled from it with the same speed when released. The Focus can also store a magic procedure; for example, a Morphing wizard would step on the Focus and perform a transformation on himself which would be copied by the Focus and repeated on the first person to activate the Focus. Even physical objects can be stored inside a Focus, provided that they contain magic in them and can pass through the Focus.

-Barrier: A barrier is a series of glyphs, usually arranged in a circle, that surround another part of the sigil. They block and restrict the magical effect inside, typically contained in a Focus. Only exceptional users can block a real spell coming towards the wizard.

-Trigger: Glyphs that specify a condition for another part of the sigil to be activated or deactivated. Commonly, a Trigger will deactivate a Barrier which in turn activates the release of a Focus.

-Path: A Path is formed by two Barriers that act as boundaries, forming a 'road' for a magical effect to travel on. It is used to channel magic where desired or connect different sigils. Just like Barriers, they can transport the magic stored in a Focus, but require a master user to channel hostile magic.

-Switch: A Switch is a single glyph, typically painted in a different color. It is used to split a magical effect into multiple parts, or merge multiple effects. The division is either power-wise (splitting big effect into small effects), or function-wise (splitting two effects of the same magic). Typically used with Paths.

Most sigils do not use all of the aforementioned blocks."

It was all too much, Aka held her head and rubbed her face, the text wall just bewildered her. She read it again and memorized only the "Focus" part, it seemed to be the most basic and essential block of these Blocks. She groaned and looked at the drawn example of a sigil. It was a circle with various symbols painted around it, looked pretty enough. Still, she thought that her first glyph should be simple.

She put down the book with her that particular page open and picked up her brush, then dipped it into her paint pot. At least practicing it was far more enjoyable than reading a boring book

[Aka's Cave] Magical Doodles

Facing her opened left palm, the right-handed Dhani then began trying to draw a circle around her eye-shaped scar mark with the paint coating the brush. She licked her lips, completely focusing her attention to this tedious task, for a novice at least. After about three chimes, She succeeded... in drawing a very crude circle, it couldn't exactly be called a circle, more like squiggly. She groaned and literally slammed her forehead to the table, facedesking. Swallowing down her frustration and fueling her spirit with pride, Aka took a spare used cloth and used the water from her waterskin to clean the failed painted "circle". She then inhaled and exhaled, dipped the brush in the ink pot, and began once more.

She put more concentration, focus, and less speed for her second attempt. After five chimes, she managed to draw a crude circle. It was not pretty, but at least it could be called a circle; it would do for now. Next she began to draw the necessary decorations around and inside the circle, Aka opted to just mimic her scar, creating a crude eye-shaped mark inside the circle, and put some squiggly lines around the circle, mimicking the basic shape of snakes. She put the brush down and let the ink to dry for a few chimes. Using the time to flex the fingers in her right hand, trying to feel the difference in channeling her djed. If she succeeded, she should feel the djed flowing to her left palm to be faster than her right.

After the ink dried, it was the moment of truth. Aka stood up and walked to the middle of her cave-room. She then held out both of her hands, concentrated, and felt the djed flowing to her right palm first. She inhaled and exhaled, finally exhuming her res through her right palm first in the form of reddish slime, it went at their usual speed and required the usual focus... but, when she flowed her djed to her left palm, it oddly went faster... and required slightly less concentration from her. She blinked in surprise and proceeded to exhume her res, she noticed... it wasn't much, but it was indeed faster. That meant she had - somewhat - succeeded in making her first Glyph! "Ahahaha! Ooooh yeah!" She hissed in glee and examined her precious crude drawing of a glyph.

She knew it, with practice, she could create prettier, stronger Glyphs and it obviously would have stronger effects. She then sat back down and began drawing the glyph for her right palm... and found out that drawing with not using her dominant arm was a major pain in the butt...

  • Glyphing 1
  • Observation 2 XP

Lore:

  • Glyphing: Channels Other Magic
  • For Emergency Glyphing: Use Blood
  • A Glyph Can be Comprised of Many Facets
  • A Focus Can Aid in Summoning Res

Additional Notes :
Alright, so...well I mean Aka did learnt he basics of glyphing so mission accomplished there. I was just quite bummed that this thread was mostly just reading word for word from the glyph lore page, and your last post was one of the exact examples provided for starting glyphers. Aka is a spunky and all over the place PC, why not have her buy some cheap knock off Glyphing book and write the passages yourself, or have her get cocky and try making an entire glyph only to have it blow up in her face? Anyway, enough of my rambling and whining, I shall be interested to see how Aka puts this into practice in her other threads nevertheless, and thanks for already deducting the items out of your ledger!

If you have any questions, concerns, accolades, complaints, etc about your grade, drop me a PM and we can most certainly talk it out.

As always, Safe Travels!
