“Steady Aoren. Steady.”

Aoren was tempted to wipe away the bead of sweat the rolled down his forehead as he sat in a meditative pose amidst the clearing he sometimes frequented in the Bronze Woods. It was not a terribly far trek from the gates of the city but it was far enough that he always carried essentials with him in case something drastic happened. He had been faced with one or two of those circumstances in the past year alone. He was certainly not going to start testing his luck. Those things, while not the furthest from his mind, were far enough removed that he could concentrate on the task at hand. However, that was precisely what he was focused on. A task. It was an entirely more complicated matter than one might initially think.

That morning he had woken up at the hour he normally did which was usually shortly before sunrise. He had collected things he would need for his short trip into the wilderness along with a book that he had recently purchased.

The Foundations of Shielding.

The Drykas man had been spending as much time as he could absorbing what knowledge he could from its pages since purchasing it two days prior. It was a very thorough albeit sometimes difficult text to decipher. Had he not been a Djed manipulator already the context of the words inscribed upon the surface of the pages would have been utterly lost on him. Fortunately with his decent amount of knowledge on the Disciplines of Reimancy and Glyphing he was at least familiar with the concept of Djed on a rudimentary level. Shielding, however, was presenting him with a complication.

Reimancy was an art of transformation that encouraged the combining of volatile and chaotic energies to produce an effect that manifested as the natural elements. Shielding was nearly the exact opposite in principle. Whereas Reimancy flirted with chaos, Shielding was grounded firmly in structure and order. After having worked with a discipline of magic that demanded thoughtful free form creativity to be suddenly faced with stalwart and seemingly unshakable information was very frustrating. The culmination of which lead him to his current predicament. There Aoren sat in the middle of the clearing with his quarterstaff and pack nearby, his legs folded in a meditative pose, hands clasped before him to match that reflective posture and eyes narrowed in deep concentration as he fought trying to will his Djed to manifest as the foundations of the Shield he was attempting to create.

[The Bronze Wood] Foundations of Shielding

After a moment longer of trying to rewrite his Djed in order to manifest it in the desired way with no success he sighed letting his posture go lax. Reaching up he wiped away the sweat from his brow. He was not sweating due to any form of heat. The bulk of the summer heat was ebbing as the season changed gradually into autumn. He was perspiring because he’d been focusing so intently on the ramifications of the Djed formula needed to create even the smallest shield that he’d exerted himself. He’d been attempting to grasp the basics of conjuring up a Shield for the better part of the morning. Mumbling to himself he rummaged through his pack, grateful for the breeze that Zulrav sent dancing through the clearing.

“Mother Avalis give me patience.” He mumbled softly to himself. Having found exactly what he was looking for, the book on Shielding, he pulled it out of the pack then opened it up to the beginning. Memorization was key to understanding the theory behind any magic. That much Aoren had learned when he was first initiated into Reimancy and thus introduced to magic in general. Carefully he scanned the pages.

“Like all Djed, the Djed necessary to produce a Shield is rooted in properly understanding the principles of Shielding as a Discipline. While hardly good for much more than simple tasking such as blocking other Djed to begin with, more advanced Shields are nearly limitless in their capacity to guard and protect over that which they encompass.

While there are many ways to produce the necessary mindset that is conducive to Shielding the most common way is through reflection, meditation and instilling into one’s mind ideas of guardianship, protection, indomitability, and an unwavering desire to perform the task the wizard is seeking to create the Shield for. This state however, can only be achieved after a great deal of concentration and the Djed can only be properly exuded from the body in the desired form once inner balance is obtained.”

Over and over, Aoren read the words written down on the pages of the book. He understood the meaning behind them. How could he not? They were very clear. It was simply a matter of obtaining the desired state of mind that eluded him. As he sat there glaring at the book trying to absorb its knowledge through sheer force of will he was struck with a revelation.

“By the gods! I’m such an idiot!” He read the sentence carefully.

“…Djed can only be properly exuded from the body in the desired form once inner balance is obtained.” The whole time he’d been trying to get the Djed to manifest before he achieved any sort of inner peace. He had gone about it entirely the wrong way. Rather than manipulate Djed after it has manifested, Shielding required focus and shape prior to its being brought into being outside of the body. Res, unlike the Djed of Shielding, could transition between forms after it was manifested. Most certainly a different direction but one he would have to wrap his head around.

With that in mind Aoren set the book aside and resumed his meditative pose. He was no master of meditation. In loud, busy settings or with people around he was easily distracted. There in the quiet of the forest though he managed to find a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Syliras.

“Breathe in…” Aoren took a deep breath willing his muscles to stop twitching. That was a very difficult thing to do given that Aoren was the kind of person who always liked to keep moving in some fashion. When his lungs were filled with precious air he could think more clearly.

“Breathe out…” He exhaled as evenly as he could. The breath trailing out of his lungs through his partially parted lips. His shoulders became less tense. The muscles in his legs stopped aching for movement. He continued this pattern of steady breathing for what must have been fifteen or twenty chimes. There was no way of knowing but Aoren finally reached a state of mind where he could focus entirely on one thing.

He could see the Djed in his mind. Having worked with it as Res in many forms he knew how pliable it could be. Aoren imagined the Djed as a liquid. A viscous material that could be “painted” over the surface he intended to Shield. He imagined on a deeper level that the threads of that Djed would stitch together to form an intricate tapestry overlapping one another to form a shimmering pattern dedicated to the single purpose of blocking other Djed.

Over and over he imagined this in his head until he couldn’t do it any longer. Then he began the process of willing that Djed into being outside of his body. Like a tailor tending to the fine clothes of a great Knight he moved his hands as if stitching together an expanse of cloth over the very book that had introduced him to the idea. Little by little he watched as thin strands of Djed began to weave themselves together over the binding of the book. The sight of the Djed spurred Aoren onward to try to weave more. He felt more sweat roll down his forehead. He tried to hold on to the weave as best he could but there was little substance to be had. Satisfied he let the magic go and watched as the miniscule amount, not even covering half of the book’s cover, collapsed upon itself.

Aoren released a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding but with it came a smile.

“Maybe I can do this after all.”

That was enough trying to work with magic for the day. He tucked the book safely back within his pack then stood up. His joints felt stiff from sitting down in such a rigid position for so long. Grabbing his quarterstaff and picking up his pack he set out away from the clearing in the direction of Syliras. He could come back soon. Aoren was determined to grasp the Discipline of Shielding. For with it he could be just that for others.
