The Fighter's Pit.

Aoren did not frequent the Pit. Indeed, he made it a habit to do the exact opposite. For the most part he preferred to train alone or with one of the few people whom he counted amongst his friends. There were things that one just could not learn sparring against imaginary foes amongst the wilderness. Bushes, trees and leaves could only put up so much of a fight.

In that regard he was now perched against one of the dilapidated walls of the Fighter's Pit observing the many patrons who flocked to Gerard Anthonious. Mercenaries. The rabble-rousers of Syliran society. People of from all walks of life could be found in the Pit. He saw men practicing their archery. Some of them seemed to be of apparent skill. Others were lacking. Aoren could not attest to any measure of skill with a bow and arrow. He was no marksman. He saw two fierce looking women practicing acrobatics with their daggers. Uncertain whether or not they were dulled blade he prayed to the Twin Goddesses that neither of the women disemboweled one another. That would have been a hard thing to ignore. No doubt the Knights would have berated Gerard for letting it happen under his watch.

The majority of Syliras had mixed feeling about the Pit. Aoren believed it was a place where you could truly see just how diverse the populace of the Fortress City of Peace really was. The upper-crust of Syliras tossed it up to being a place where one could just find ruffians looking to hone whatever it is that ruffians specialized in. No doubt they were prone to believe it was to come steal their goods in the night. Such notions only made Aoren chuckle.

Overall, Aoren didn't really see anyone who caught his eye. There he stood, leaning against a wall in the cool early-morning air searching for a partner. It wasn't hard to guess why he was there. He wanted to train. From the bandages that were wrapped around his hands and up the length of his forearms it would be easy for a more seasoned individual to guess he was looking for hand to hand combat training.

"Who is it going to be?"

He thought quietly to himself. Aoren wasn't a masterful fighter. He knew a basic stance, how to throw a punch, and how to kick. That was about it. He needed to refine his skills and that was something you could only do by working with and studying with others.

Who would it be indeed?

[Anthonious Fighter's Pit] Into the Fighter's Den

Sei broke through the crowded Streets of Syliras, and adjusted his gauntlets. He walked past the Rearing Stallion, and breezed through the streets until he was stepping into the Anthonious Fighter Pit. He fistpumped the air at a couple of guys lifting weights, who replied with a nod. He had left his heavy gear at his apartment, and the only thing on his person besides his gauntlets was the dagger he had straped to his back. He stepped into the pit and readied his muscles, tensing his senses and scanning the area for a sparing partner. He was usually sparing with random partners, and was a regular to the Pit. He continued to scan and passed through the many areas. He spotted Gerard with a few rookies, who, as usual, was being swamped by r-training requests. He gave Gerard a nod and walked into the next area of the pit.

Sei was a frequent visitor and participant. He was often here with random partners, or when someone was looking for a match. To him this place was home. He trained here, and was proud of the way it was operated. This was his happy place, where he found comfort, and were he was most at peace. He was known by almost everyone who frequented the Pit, and was a very open fighter. He fought the girls and boys alike, and was filled with good sportsmanship. He admitted his losses, but he also fought even when he knew he would lose. He was here day and night.

Turning his thoughts back to reality, he spotted a man in the sparing area who was leaning on a wall. He walked up to him with a slight nod and spoke. "A match perhaps?" He said playfully.

[Anthonious Fighter's Pit] Into the Fighter's Den

Aoren watched the young man approach him. He was obviously someone who frequented the Pit a lot more than he did. The way he expressed familiarity with some of the more gruff fighters said as much. He stood up straight and pushed himself off the wall when it became apparent that he was making his way straight for him. Aoren offered the young man a friendly nod of his head and a slight smile.

"A match?" He chuckled to himself. Had he not just been asking that very question? It seemed his great Goddess was humoring him greatly that day. He offered a silent thanks to the deity who guided most every step that he took. Aoren took a look at the man. He was tall and lean with a confident almost buoyant step. There was a mirthful glint to his green eyes that bespoke a delighted curiosity in simple things. The Drykas man noted the gauntlets he wore. He pointed to them.

"By match I am going to assume that you want to spar with fists? If that is so then I will say I own no such gauntlets myself and I don't believe that Master Anthonious possesses any to spare. Would you be kind enough to remove them?" He tapped his bandage wrapped fists.

"That way it can be an even playing field." He gave the young man a friendly smile then clasped his hands behind his back standing at a relaxed parade rest. Aoren definitely needed the practice when it came to his unarmed combat skills. He had been slacking as of late. There was no excuse for it other than things beyond the physical had taken up most of his interest. He needed to remedy that. He made a mental note to himself to begin practicing in the woods more often than he had been doing. He would need to run his desires by his employer at Stormhold Salves but he couldn't imagine that Mistress Sahfri Blackleaf would have any qualms about him doing such so long as he kept up with his work.

Once the dark haired young man had taken up his place, Aoren shifted his hips. He dropped his knees slightly then turned his torso so that he wasn't facing the man completely head on. He brought up his hands to his sides tucking them in close to his body and took a deep breath. He needed to remember what little he knew about the more refined techniques of unarmed fighting. Aoren wasn't a brawler. What he knew had the makings of a disciplined fighter.

"You'll have to forgive me, friend. It has been a long time since I have sparred with anyone. I would appreciate some pointers if you have them." He winked at the young man giving him another friendly smile before extending his left arm with his fist closed. His stance was ready. Though, even then he could hear a friend from his past critiquing his footing. The thought helped to ease his nervousness and served as a reminder not to stand so stiffly in place.

"Shall we begin?"

Sei chuckled a bit when the man questioned the gauntlets he wore. "Of course. I wouldn't be using these unless I was in a real match. Sparing is different." He said with a playful smile. He removed his gauntlets and placed them in his pocket, and watched as the man stepped into the ring. "I take it you don't come here often, seeing as I've yet to see you." He said, turning to equal his shoulders with the mans. He was happy to see the man was decent at least. He was looking at the mans stance, and was ready to have a good match, but was surprised to find his lack of grace in his stance. "Ah, a true fighter. An even playing field you say? I'm happy to oblige. It's nice to see an honorable partner once and a while." He said happily.

"Me? Give you pointers? You give me too much credit, but I'll tell you what I see." He said with a laugh. He placed a foot between his feet, and held his right arm in front of him. He bent his elbow where his hand was just above his nose, and placed his left arm at his side. He then hardened his expression and spoke. "You look a little of balance. When taking a stance, for me, it's best not to put you feet more than twelve inches apart." He said, as he surged at the man. He used his left arm to punch at the mans' stomach, and simultaneously used his right to go for the head with his palm. He watched the man carefully. He tried to circle to the right, and went to elbow the mans' back between the shoulder blades. After that he would step back, putting distance between the two.

He took his stance again and waited. "By the way, my name is Sei, what's yours?"

[Anthonious Fighter's Pit] Into the Fighter's Den

Aoren almost wasn't ready for the attacks that came his way. Almost. The fist that was aimed at his stomach was blocked by his right arm. He knocked away the punch by connecting his forearm with the man's. The blow that was aimed for his head was deflected in much the same manner. Rather than attempt to throw his arm up to absorb the blow Aoren slid his arm inward of his opponents and knocked it away.

The blow aimed for his shoulder blades? Well, Aoren didn't have eyes in the back of his head. He was hit squarely in the center of his back and stumbled forward a few steps before gaining his footing again. Not wasting any time he planted one leg and pivoted swinging his other around in a whirling kick aimed in no particular direction other than the one Aoren assumed the man was now standing. When the dark haired man came into view Aoren saw that his kick just missed connecting with his thigh.

"Thank you for the advice. I will be sure to put it to good use." He face the man squarely dropping his hips and adjusting his stance accounting for his uneasy posture. He tried to force himself to relax more steadily into the stance instead of clinging stiffly to the few basics that he knew. Without waiting for another invitation he moved forward. Aoren dropped his hips further. He shifted his feet and curled his body so that his shoulders were firmly withing view. Never losing eye contact with his opponent he sprinted toward the man. The sound of his footfalls echoed in Aoren's ears. When he was mere inches away he brought his right fist upwards intent on contacting with his opponents stomach. At the last second however he feinted to the left then planted his right foot on the ground swinging his hips around bringing his left leg up in a kick aimed for the side of the man's head.

"Shyke!"

Aoren exclaimed inwardly as his kick was dodged. He wasn't surprised. He was certainly not the most skilled unarmed fighter in the world. He allowed his kick to come around full swing before jumping back dropping into his stance again. He circled the ring keeping his eyes on his opponent. When the man gave his name Aoren quirked his head slightly.

"Sei? An interesting name." He gave Sei an incline of his head.

"You may call me Aoren."

Aoren was fast, but Sei was to. They were matching themselves blow for blow, and it didn't seem like either was here to lose. He gave Aoren a slight grin, and shot forward. He turned so he was shoulder first, and brought his palm up to the mans' chin. Taking a step back, he surged forward again, and bent his knees so his head was in line with Aorens' collar, and shot a punch for his throat. He jumped back, and once again decided to come to blows. He pressed onward, and went in for a low kick, and aimed right above the knee. He pressed on and waited for Aoren to catch up before stepping forward, and punching at his chest repeatedly. He went for a right hook, and tried to pushed Aoren back.

He jumped back himself, and waited for his blows to settle before rushing in again. He surged forward, and used his left fist to go for Aorens forehead, and simultaneously used his right to go for his stomach.

OOCSorry it's short, but I'm in a bit of writers block stage right now. :(

[Anthonious Fighter's Pit] Into the Fighter's Den

The ensuing onslaught of attacks was almost too much for Aoren to handle. He was far from experienced in anything regarding hand to hand combat. There wasn't much he could really do to defend against a barrage of seemingly precise blows. But though he lacked experience in giving shape to the thoughts of fighting that he had in his head he was quite an observational individual. So he stayed on the defensive. As the blow to his shoulder came he ducked downward. He knocked away the fist directed at his throat and twisted his torso away from the fist aimed at his stomach. He missed, however, the kick coming for his knee.

Aoren yelped in pain as the kick slammed against the side of his knee threatening to pop it out of place but being a somewhat experienced acrobat he rolled with the kick. Using the momentum that comes with being kicked he rolled sideways and hopped to his feet before he landed face first in the dirt. He limped away from Sei before taking up his stance again only to be quickly inundated with punches aimed at his gut. Aoren barely had time to block the blows as one landed squarely in his stomach causing him to get winded. He drew in breath and knocked aside the fists pelting his body jumping back with a heavy breath.

"I am very obviously outmatched here, Sei." Aoren's torso hurt from all of the blows that his opponent had managed to land. His forearms were aching from the fists he'd knocked away and his legs were sore from rolling, tucking and dodging the dark haired man. He gave his opponent a bow. There was no flourish of dramatic theatrics it was a simple bow of the waist accompanied by an equally humble smile. "I concede to your superior fighting skills. I won't be much of a sparring partner when it comes to my fists much more than what you've seen already. Perhaps we could compare stances instead since this spar is decidedly one sided?" He chuckled and shook his head.

Aoren was indeed a novice. This sparring match had shown him just how much of a novice he really was. There were other ways to improve his hand to hand combat techniques though. Methods that did not end up with him black, blue and bloody. Not that Aoren minded. He wasn't afraid of pain and getting bruised. His work with the quarterstaff was proof enough that he wasn't afraid to get into a fight. He just didn't see that there was much to be gained when he was so obviously unskilled.

OOCThat's okay. I've been tied up with a lot of things lately! Hopefully your writers block has abated by now. Lol

"Of course." Sei replied, dropping his stance with a cheerful smile. He walked over to Aoren, and gave him a happy look. "Well, there was a few things I noticed," he began. "You seem to be quick, swift even. And your speed was almost up with mine, so the first thing I recommend is a simple, relaxed stance." He said, stepping next to the man, and formed a simple stance. His left leg around six inches in front of his right, and hisright arm firm at his side. He lifted his left arm diagonally acroos his face.

"A basic stance, and the best stance for those with speed. With your one foot behind the other, the foot that's behind would be the foot you step out with first. With your arms, you can relax them, or keep on fist back while charging, and switch at the moment to surprise your opponent into thinking your an idiot." He said, his lips turning into a smirk.

He smiled and waited for Aoren to follow his lead.

OOCGods I hope so too.

Aoren watched Sei take up his stance. He repeated the motions bringing up his arms to rest almost diagonally across his chest while spreading his feet six inches apart. He rotated his hips slightly and bent his knees as if to absorb the impact of an oncoming jab.

"Like this?" He eyed the other man up and down curiously. He adjusted his stance where he saw error or added his own modification to things as to make standing more comfortable. Once that was done he moved both of his arms down to his side tucking his elbows in and closing his hands into fists.

"What about this stance? I've seen some fighters start from here? I'm lead to believe that this stance is more grounded. Would you know how to incorporate a more grounded fighting stance into my technique but still maintain the swift movements?" Aoren wasn't unfamiliar with the variety of fighting styles that there were to be found around Syliras. There were wrestlers. There were boxers. There were run of the mill brawlers. For all of those fighters though there were not many with highly refined fighting styles completely unique to them. He knew that the Knights must possess a specific form of hand to hand combat style but such disciplined styles were not commonplace around the Fortress City.

Theirs was a culture built around the sword and the shield. Not simply because they wanted to but because they had to. Steel and iron seemed to be the only surefire way of keeping the city safe from the innumerable amounts of dangers that lurked outside the walls of Stormhold Castle.

Sei observed Aoren, and watched as Aoren changed his stance. Relaxing his stance, Sei analyzed the possible flow of movement from Aoren's current position. "Well, I think that it's fine. You might not be able to shift into a charge as fast, but punches and kicks would have a natural flow." He said happily. With Aoren's leg position, a roundhouse kick would be much more powerful. With punches, Aoren would be able to make smooth transitions.

He copied Aorens' stance, and tried to use a right hook. The flow of movement was swift, and by keeping his other hand in the same place, countering would be a breeze. He turned to Aoren, and signalled him to try as well. "Try your best hand move, and try keeping one hand in the same place." He said. He wanted to know if Aoren could mimic the flow of his arms.

Sei couldn't think of a better stance than Aorens' current one. He also wanted to test the leg speed, and try out a roundhouse. After this it would be a good idea for them to spar, and try out their ideas, but for now they would train. He decided to let Aoren try on his own, and stepped over to the side for some space. He lifted his knee, and shoot his leg up. Afterward, he brought it down and flung it upwards at full speed. He tried a roundhouse, and found it a simple task from his starting stance.
