With a glance Abashai observed Nya's wounds. Visual inspection revealed they were not life-threaten, but the fact that, with focus, he could feel the sensation of pain made them very real to the bondmate. He did not like to see his wife wounded. The benshira had seen her injured on many occasions, he had seen her on the edge of death, and he had seen her die. The husband never became accustomed to seeing the kelvic hurt. Shai nodded in agreement with Nya, and felt a twinge of guilt. He had secured a shirt of mail for his own protection, but did not consider acquiring armor for his forest cat mate. It was an oversight Nya now paid for in blood. The appearance of the horseman had interrupted his thought. The bondmates remained unseen on the wooded bank, allowing them a moment to observe the riders. One bore a scraggly blonde beard and pony tail, the other's pate was bald and he had a makeshift patch over one eye. "Nya, they are no knights." He spoke into her consciousness. "They are slouchers and don't know how to sit in their saddles. And look at their surcoats, fresh blood stains." The two men seemed to fidget in their armor, lighter than the heavier plate worn by the knights closer to Syliras. His head twisted up into the woods where they had first found the two fresh corpses. "Imposters. It was ambush we interrupted." The rush of combat still pumped through Abashai's veins, as did the gnosis energy. Shai wiped the back of his hand across his cheek, smearing the blood from the scratch along his face. Nya was wounded, and wished to fight no more, but his trusting wife would follow his lead if he chose to attack. She too had followed him on his foolhardy hunt for a Talderian Bull Elk. Then too, Nya paid for his vanity in blood. The benshiran stretched his side, wincing as he felt the sting of the laceration across his ribs. Looking down at the road, Shai chose a different approach. He called out to the horsemen, his voice full and threatening. "Your men are dead, all of them. You are alone. Take this chance to flee. If we find you again, we will kill you as well. If you stay here...we will kill you." With a mental nudge to Nya Abashai added in her mind. "A loud roar might be effective here. If they do not leave, and threaten the travelers, I will kill them." |
