Fall, Day 25, 513 AV

With so many new people in the tent city, by their own will or not, and the traders having come into the city, the pavilion where she worked had become quite busy. With shiny new fabrics from the Ektoli traders, and clothing the 'new Drykas' there was much work to be done.

Rue sat just inside the flaps of the pavilion, so that the occasional breeze and the cooling weather could reach her. In her lap was a tunic that she was just finishing the embroidery on. The neckline and hem had already been adorned with the simply twisting silver embroidery, one cuff on a sleeve had joined the rest of the top in it's completion. She was working on the cuff of the second sleeve, long and loose as they were, the cuff would button at the wrist to keep the sleeve where it belonged.

She almost dreaded the last stitches that would seal the thread in place, ending the pattern of knots with a knot that would hide in the underside of the cuff. The soft double layered fabric in her hands was a beautiful shade of green, one that would remind anyone who say it of the green they would leave behind as the cold weather turned the ground brown and white.

She looped the string, sliding the needle through the hole, then picked the same thread up into a loop and fed the needle through once more. The string pulled tight, the knot flush against the fabric, the only flaw in her ending was the spot where the fine string snarled, leaving a loop hanging from the knot.

Always her string caught this way in the end. It was something she had yet to find a solution to, well that is a solution beyond cutting the loop and removing the hanging ends.

It was finished, and with a longing sigh she decided that she would put it on display in the front of the shop where it was sure to catch someone's eye.

Moving through the pavilions, her blue eyes watching the cloth structures intently, searching for one in particular. Since having the less then stellar riding lesson a few days before, and knowing that her one and only garment would not last long Taylani had obtained directions to a seamstress who might be able to help her with her needs.

Her simple dress that she wore now was one that lacked the vibrant colors that the Drykas seemed to favor, it was plain of cut and only the buttons down the front adorned it. For someone who was training to be a performer, Taylani preferred to be less noticed when she was off stage. On her back she carries a worn leather pack, one that sits well against her slim frame and looks as if it is well cared for. Her movements not quite confident but definitely not the timid little shuffle that some of the other captives had affected, Taylani refuses to give anyone the enjoyment of seeing her cowed. Though Taylani does not think that these people truly wanted to see people dispirited and broken, for the most part. They were just callously unworried about how being kidnapped and bred kind of disrupted people's lives.

With a sigh and a shake of the head Taylani pushes that thought aside. Today she was here for a reason and getting bitter and maudlin would not help the matter. Finally she arrived outside the tented area, and though the tent flap was open Taylani hesitates outside for a long moment. It didn't seem right to just barge in, but unlike in the city there are no doors or walls to rap on. So instead she called in common "Hello!" though she knew that word in Pavi, she was unsure if the other would be able to see her gestures.

Waiting a moment, Taylani steps into the tent and stops short when she recognizes the other redhead. Her hesitation was just a breath or two before she says once more, this time in Pavi, "Hello." She tries to use words that she knows in Pavi as much as possible to help jumpstart her learning the language.

Yet she reverts back to common when she begins to speak again. "I am looking for a tailor. I have a need for new clothing." She speaks slowly, remembering "Fallan has decided that I need to learn to ride.." She waves her hand at her skirt, "This does not work well on a horse." A wild blush sprang to her cheeks as she remembered how the riding lesson had ended.

The common startled Rue as she moved towards the door, and she was even more surprised when she saw the woman the voice belonged to.

"Hello." She replies, accompanying the spoken word with a slightly clumsy greetings, the tunic in her hands only slightly jumbling the sign. "I do not know this, 'tailor', but I can help find clothing, is job for me." The other woman blushed as she spoke of riding, and Rue could only imagine why. Dresses were not good clothes for riding a horse, not if you might fall off, anyway.

"Want breeches," she touched her own pants to explain the word, "and tunic?" She held up the one in her hand, showing the other once more what her Pavi word meant.

It would be good for the girl, Taylni, to learn to ride, although Rue was surprised after how fearful the other had been of Wildfire. Some new clothing would be good for her too, new clothing was always good for anyone, even if they were not Drykas.

"Tailor.." Taylani says her hands mimicking using a needle and thread. Though after just a second she shrugs, not sure why she was bothering trying to show the common word. Taking a breath, she lifts her chin though her face remains impassive, her hands smoothing over her worn dress. Loath as she was to give up yet one more thing from home, she knew that it was best even if it meant taking up one more custom of these people. Yet it still sent a stab of homesickness through her at the thought.

"Breeches.." She repeats carefully, adding another word to her Pavi vocabulary, her head tilted for a moment. She raises a finger, looking around to see if she could find something to point too but didn't readily see something that she felt comfortable using so she bent to grab the hem of her skirt. "Do you perhaps know how to make a divided skirt?" To demonstrate she formed 'scissors' with her fingers to demonstrate cutting, then the needle and thread mime to indicate sewing. In the end the effect would be a very wide pant, but when standing would appear to be a full skirt, but allow the rider to sit astride a horse without the skirts pulling up around her thighs.

"No.." She says in Pavi again, the sign a little more confident then her signal for hello, "It good if no." Again her pavi was once more hesitant almost questioning in its timidity.

"You want to cut dress?" It seemed an odd request from the other girl, but if that was what she preferred... Maybe they could get her a new dress too, one that she would not ride in. They had plenty of those in the shop.

Rue moved around the other girl as she continued to speak, stripping a shaped hanger to place the green tunic on it instead. The old shirt she folded and placed on a display table. Turning back to the other girl she eyed her critically, trying to decide what would suit her best.

"Why cut dress? Because want new dress?" She waved to the shop where there were plenty of such dresses on display. "But dress is no good for ride horse. Cut dress worse, then fabric" She made a flapping motion with her arms, mimicking the way fabric would whip around in the wind, "scare horses. Might throw Taylani off back if scared. No good."

She shook her head, imagining the trouble to be had for trying to learn to ride a horse in a dress. The woman would need pants, if not the fitted breeches then maybe the looser type that would cinch only at her hip and her ankle. While the second would not last as long for riding a horse, the loose fabric was thinner and would rub down more quickly, it would still be better than a dress.

"No want Breeches? Still need other pant. Come, I show." She finished in Pavi, words she remembered the girl learning at their last meeting.

Frustrated Taylani sighed a heavy breath, and shook her head. She did not want pants, or breeches, or anything else that looked too...Drykas. It was her own personal defiance but was hers alone, it didn't even matter if no one else realized the defiance but her own self. She was already losing herself in this culture, already losing what it meant even to be Taylani the Dancer and slowly Taylani the Captive was taking over. The beads Fallan bought, with what seemed to be his intention of decorating her hair, the need to learn Pavi, learn a new lifestyle, this was something Taylani wanted to keep as hers.

She has seen the skirts that the wealthy women in the city who could afford horses for riding wore. She knew that they divided down the middle but she was not sure how to put them in phrases the other woman would understand. "No, not cutting my skirt. Another skirt, cut and then sewn together. Wide pants perhaps, but ...." She stopped as she realized she was speaking quickly and her own struggles with understanding Pavi told her that it must have been difficult to understand her. After raising a hand to her brow, she rubbed her temple gently, "Fine. What ever will be easiest."

She nodded to show that she understood the other woman's pavi instructions, and obediently followed her. Her eyes did not so much as fall on the garments hanging, clothing for Taylani was simply functional not something she has ever used as decoration for her body or for any rooms.

"Look, here." Rue offered the woman a set of the pants she had first thought of. Wide and loose to the ankle where it tightened to hold in place.

The look of displeasure on Taylani's face said better than words that this was not what she wanted. "No good." Rue mumbled, folding the fabric back just as quickly as she had offered it. Skirt. She wanted a skirt to ride in, but maybe...

She left the other to stand by herself as she scurried around the shop, looking for the item that had popped into her head. She ended up behind the curtain that separated the shop from the sewing and changing areas, digging through the clothing that had been put away to be scrapped and used as extra fabric. An exclamation of happiness sounded from behind the curtain, and Rue returned to the other beaming proudly. "This good. What think Taylani?"

She offered a pair of dancers pants, they fell from the hip loose to the ground, a fabric wrap at the top hiding the division that was obvious from the back. It was unusual, the clothing item. Falling like one large piece of fabric, but separate like pants.

It would work for riding, though, and that was what mattered. Or maybe that wasn't the important part for the other girl, because breeches would work even better. All the same, Rue was sure that Taylani would like these better.

Perhaps it was the look on her face, or perhaps Rue understood what she was saying better then she thought but Taylani was infinitely pleased when she took away the breeches. It was not something that Taylani could convey, even if Rue was fluent in common, the reason why she did not want to wear pants or breeches. She did not want to braid her hair, she really didn't want to sit astride a horse, but this she conceded was a necessary evil. It was one of the last ways that she could hold on to herself.

So when she comes back with the new garment Taylani's brows raised as she looked over it. It was still bright, as most of Drykas clothing tended to be, at least bright in Taylani's opinion. However that was not a problem for the Dancer, who did not care one way or the other how her body looked in clothing, only that it would not make her look too much like the barbarians of this place. It was not exactly what she was thinking, but it was so similar that she could not stop the bright smile that crossed her lips. "Yes, yes that will work!" Even though she realized that she was smiling, perhaps bigger then she has the entire time she has been here, Taylani does not pull it in.

She gestured to her torso, "A top that ..well kind of matches them?" Again she is not used to working with colored garments but she knew enough that she didn't want anything garish.

oocI will leave the fabric, colors, and adornments up to you. The price list would be helpful in deciding what you want on the top as far as embroidery or buttons and the like.

Tops were in a entirely different area of the shop, so Rue led the other girl there, offering ideas as she walked. "This color look good with Taylani skin." She said, pointing out a green top with long fitted sleeves.

"This make more see eyes." She offered as she found a top in a pretty blue. She pointed out a few others, but without really knowing what Taylani wanted, it was all just different shots in the dark. "Want sleeve long? Sleeve short? High neck? Taylani need look, then find what Taylani want." Rue nodded sharply, proud of her sagely advice delivered in a foreign tongue.

The pant was a green, darker then some but not in any way a dark color. The trim was edged in purple threading, a thick embroidery so that the purple hinted rather then screamed it's presence. Other then thinking that dyed fabrics unnecessary and frivolous, Taylani had to admit that she thought the green would go well against her fair skin and red hair. She did not even correlate that Fallan also wore clothing accented in purple, a nod to the Amethyst Clan that he belonged to.
"I just want functional..." She murmured softly before trailing off. Moving behind Rue, it took her a moment to enter the area of the shop where the blouses were displayed. It took her even longer before her blue eyes settled on a purple blouse that while not plunging, was low enough to reveal the extreme tops of her breasts. Far more daring then she would ever have though of wearing before, her own dress now buttoned completely up to her throat in sturdy fabric. This however was softer, not silk but perhaps cotton, and when she picked up the short sleeved blouse she marveled at the lightness of it. The purple was a bright almost floral colored, not the dark of the purple threads in the green pants but put together they definitely were more color then she was used to seeing in her own wardrobe.

OOC infoPants : Dyed x1.5+ Embroidered x5 + Cotton 1.25 / Small 50% * 8 sm = 31 sm or 3 gold and 1 sm. Blouse : Dyed 1.5 + Embroidered x5 + Cotton 1.25 /Small 50% * 8sm = 31 SM or 3 gm and 1 sm. I think my maths are correct..
