[The Quarters] Understanding Nothing

The small cramped room was her realm, her little domain on Sahova. It was small but it was her world in a way, her sanctum where no one could intrude upon without cause. Anna knew that it was a delusion of sorts, however it was good and pleasant delusion so she allowed it. It was very likely that she was going to need to get used to this place, it would likely be some time before she was considered proven enough to be given oversight of a lab. Inconvenient as that was there were other matters to occupy her mind, such as her session today. Today wasn't about Daren or enemies, it was about exploring the unknown.

Her encounter with Master Roknus Maelstrom had taught her many things, one being that if she was going to stand out here she needed more than reimancy and glyphing to bring to the table. So she intended to, at least once per day, open a portal to the Void and try to keep it open for at least a chime. Today she was going to try for longer and do a couple of experiments, but going forward she needed to establish a routine. The Void was a vast power, potentially a weapon with greater potency than reimancy. It represented destruction in its purest form, the end of all things.

The tall woman sat upon the mat in her room, cross-legged and staring at her right hand. Intricate glyphs spiraled from a Focus placed upon her palm, tracing up her fingers. She needed every advantage she could get as opening the portal was the major problem she had, often it wouldn't appear at all and other times it would show up immediately. It all seemed to be subject to chance, hence this new training regimen. Getting to the point were she could at least open a portal more often than not would be a start. So that was what today would be focused on, not maintaining a portal for an extended period but rather opening and closing portals. It was a simple exercise, but it would help her portal formation in the long run.

Anna started by cycling her breathing, closing her eyes and trying to find some form of inner calm. Amidst the rather life threatening events of the last week Anna had possessed very little time to actually meditate. Normally she was one to revel in chaos and turmoil, but now was not the time for such things. There needed to be a way to guide these things, not necessarily an order imposed upon them but a direction to focus them. Anna imagined it as uneasy oceans flowing into powerful and barely contained rapids, still strong but given a flow to them. That was the equilibrium to be maintained.

Each breath taken in entered her nose and each breath released left her mouth slowly, the rise and fall of her chest more pronounced and orderly. With each cycling things became much more calm, her mind was settling and troubling worries were tossed out into the back of her mind. The Quarters were silent as most days, making concentration on clearing her mind much easier. Still, part of her missed the days when her meditation had taken place on the shores of Matthews Bay, the lapping waves sounding in her ears. Sahova's silence was artificial, muted in a way so as to almost be unsettling. Perhaps it was merely homesickness.

The wizard continued this cycling for chime after chime, focusing upon the idea of infinite emptiness. The concept was basic of course but it would likely assist when the actual act of manifesting a link to the Void came into play, along with the focus Glyph and incantations. She was doing everything possible to make this process last as long as possible, getting comfortable with the Void was the but the first step to understanding. Once understanding was achieved she could actually start learning how to properly use it, from there the possibilities were myriad.

It took about thirty solid chimes of cycled breathing and focus for clarity to be achieved and the concept to reign supreme in her mind. The Void was nothingness eternal, a massive space with no beginning or end. While Mizahar was finite the Void was not, the blackness stretched on forever and ever never starting and never finishing. Its vastness laid beyond imagining for mortals, who could only really speculate and guess.

Anna slowly opened her grey eyes, settling them upon her index finger and focusing on a space slightly above it. It was time to start, her goal today was to get at least five solid manifestations of tiny portals above her finger. It was the only size she could really manage for such a thing, anything larger required too much Djed to maintain. It would likely be pushing her limits, but she was willing to take the risk. Compared to Reimancy, urges from Voiding were much easier to deal with. She started up a chant in the Ancient Tongue, the one normally employed when trying to bridge This Side to The Other Side.

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

The Ancient Tongue was a language that possessed multiple meanings within every word, hence why its vocabulary was so small. Anna understood the basics of it, one day she hoped to become fluent in the old language. It would reflect how very far removed she was from the naïve little girl, running along the beach with dreams of foolish in nature. The particular chant she utilized possessed a few different meanings, but her particular inflection meant, 'That which spans is that which is too large to be counted at a single glance. That which is too large to be counted at a single glance is that which spans.' It seemed an apt way to describe the Void with her limited understanding.

Her focus was concentrated upon the Djed within her body, willing it to move along through her body to the focus of her hand. From there it was moved along the runes spiraling up her index finger, finding its end there. That was the easy part down, now she needed to actually command the Djed to preform the correct function. Some of the time, even with preparation a portal wouldn't even manifest. Other times res formed from her concentration, only a few times would a portal form. It was rather annoying when res formed, as it wasted valuable Djed no matter how miniscule.

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

Part of her wondered why she even bothered with the Void, she had attained such power in Reimancy that with a little more work and research it was likely that even Maelstrom wouldn't be able to match her one day. Currently she was definitely cut from a different cloth than the majority of apprentices in the Citadel, being able to survive going head to head with a master of her field. Combining that with Glyphing seemed to make her an extremely potent force. Why then did she insist on bothering with Voiding?

There was pride of course, the knowledge that she had come so far in reimancy pushing her further herself in Voiding just as far. Then there was the practical side of it, the fact that the Void could be used to dispose of experiments that get out of hand. Already she had a few ideas involving mixing the curses of Chaon with the fire of reimancy. Such things would need a method of disposal, thus Voiding was needed. Of course, its sheer destructive potential was a nice bonus as well.

Her eyes focused upon the space above her index finger, willing the Djed to move up to empty the space there. She was rewarded with clear translucent fluid forming on the tip of her finger, eliciting a foul curse from the tall woman's lips. A waste of Djed, though she hadn't honestly expected to form the portal right away. Anna willed the res to return into her body, returning to her chant quickly.

"Sutla gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug Sutla."

Anna focused again, willing her Djed to move upwards and empty the space above her finger. Nothing happened at first so she continued to concentrate, her incantations steady. Finally she was rewarded by the formation of a small, swirling vortex of pure darkness bursting into existence above her finger. It was no larger than the nail of her pinky finger, but it was still a successful bridge between This Side and The Other Side. Anna fed the portal more Djed, struggling to keep it open for a couple of ticks.

Keeping a portal open was comparable to feeding an ocean into a never ending thimble. It was such a small thing but it was unbelievably greedy for her vital energy. Anna didn't want to imagine what it would be like to make it even bigger. She loved staring into the little portals though, there was always a sense of utter satisfaction at having opened a bridge between dimensions. It was small, but she had actually managed to do it so she thought some satisfaction warranted.

After a couple more ticks of feeding her Djed to the tiny portal Anna decided it was time to close it, so she focused on the core of the construct. Once focus was achieved she willed the empty space to fill itself with a tiny bit of matter. This accomplished the portal flickered for a moment before vanishing, closed by her force of will. The act had not been overly tiring but it had certain taken more of a toll than she would have liked. Hopefully she'd reach her goal before the end.

The tall woman was not one to merely rest upon her laurels when having succeeded in a singular goal, so she gathered her focus and readied to form another portal. She needed to keep going while the feeling was there, the knowledge of how to properly open a portal between dimensions. Stopping now to try and redraw the glyphs now flowing freely from her hand in the form of black ink would be folly. The dark liquid dripped from her hands like droplets of pure midnight, her glyphs breaking form once their purpose had been served. That meant that this next portal would need to be opened without the glyphs to aid it. While not overly troubling it was annoying to some degree.

The apprentice idly wondered if perhaps it would be wise to inquire to Amaryllis as to who could give her advice in terms of Voiding, deciding against it almost immediately. She had self learned reimancy easily enough, Voiding would be no different. Besides indebting herself to another wizard seemed like a poor idea at the moment. Instruction from one more knowledgeable would be useful to some degree, but she was something of a prodigy in regards to magic. Once she got the basics down things flowed naturally.

She started up the chant again, her eyes locked in the same space where the portal had previously existed. Perhaps forming it in the same spot would help with the formation of a new portal, one could only hope. It was a theory, baseless but one perhaps to look into. She mentally cursed herself for not making an active effort to learn Auristics, if anything could answer that question it would be an Aurist.

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug Sutla."

Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

Anna focused her Djed upwards into her index finger, pushing it outwards again towards the space above the digit. For a moment nothing happened, until the familiar warmth of res rising from her skin became apparent. The clear translucent liquid sheathed the tip of her finger, shimmering slightly before her grey eyes. As opposed to the Void the res formation was miniscule and pretty much negligible in terms of Djed drain. It was still petching annoying, getting her magical wires crossed was certainly not something she could afford later down the line.

She sighed in disgust, willing the liquid to gather back inside of her to replenish some of the Djed lost in its formation. Getting past this phase, where res was created rather than a gate to the Void was going to be key. Ideally she wanted a portal to form whenever she willed it to, rather than either nothing happening or res forming. It was clear that was still a ways away.

The same thing had happened when she had first taken up reimancy, often res wouldn't form or would take forever to do so. She would overcome this problem the same way she had then, sheer bloody minded determination and patience. If she forced this whole thing the entire time then she wasn't going to get anything out of it, so she'd work at it and work at it until she got it right. That was the approach she'd taken with reimancy and now she was among the more powerful wizards in the discipline.

"Sutla gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug Sutla."

She focused her Djed upon the space once more, willing the spot to be made empty. As usually nothing happened for a little while, but Anna kept her concentration and was rewarded eventually with another small portal, the drain upon her Djed becoming rather apparent for that. It actually surprised her the amount stolen from her, it had been a long time since merely manifesting anything took so much from her. Again, it was rather like starting with reimancy. The main difference between Voiding and reimancy was spell maintenance. Reimancy was rather like a short burst of power, draining one depending upon the size and amount of spells used. Void was just one long continuous drain, taking as much as it wanted like a greedy child.

Anna felt a rush of energy sapped from her by the portal as it formed, yet at the same time it felt glorious. The urge, while not nearly as pronounced as with Reimancy, was certainly still here and was ready to shove her into giving too much to the Void. Anna, used to the temptation of magic by this point, was able to resist and maintain focus on feeding the young portal Djed. She needed to do the same thing as the last portal and keep it open for a few ticks, closing it when it started to take more than she could afford for this exercise.

It was a funny thing really, staring into the tiny portal. It was so small, yet beyond it laid an incomprehensibly massive realm. The tiny swirling portal seemed to absorb the light around it, consuming everything that it could to stay open. Anna idly wondered if a combination of glyphs and Voiding could be used to create a self sustaining portal, something to look into perhaps. It did seem to feed off of Djed, so the theory was sound. Of course, it was for a later time when she could manage more than just merely keeping it open.

The apprentice focused upon the tiny bridge, willing matter to fill the core of the portal for a collapse. As with before after a time the tiny portal flickered and the vanished, closing the path to the Void. She felt more drained than when she had first started, but was certain that she could keep going. Overgiving was still a distant threat given her rather ability to keep the time keeping the portal open to a minimum. The only real threat came from the manifesting of the bridge itself. The initial formation took quite chunk of energy to create, enough now that her breathing was noticeably heavier. She wasn't sweating yet and the weariness in her was still very manageable.

A slight grin found its way to her lips as she wondered what the Judges would have thought of her creating a tiny portal at first, before her display of Reimancy. A slight chuckle escaped her, she imagined they would have been quite insulted.

Anna allowed herself a few chimes to collect herself and calm her mind, steadying her breathing. It wasn't going to regain any Djed but it would make her less likely to mess up and do something stupid. Limits were important to become familiar with as soon as possible, how many times could she summon a portal and how long could she summon it for? How limited was she at the moment? Where was the ceiling and how could that ceiling be expanded upon?

Personal magic was the magic of the self, if one made a mistake it was their own fault. There was no long and complicated formula or equation explaining what happened and what went wrong, there was nothing but your own wits and experience. You could listen to a master tell you how something was done until you were blue in the face, at the end of the day it all came down to you. The mark of a real wizard, a true wizard, was to see those limits and wonder how they could be stretched and expanded upon.

Anna ceased her rest and lifted her hand once more, focusing upon the space above her index finger again. Idly she brushed a hand through her long hair, left unbound and freely falling about her. It was tangled as she had risen from her slumber not long before attempting this. The wizard plucked and errant strand from her head and held it in her left hand, still focusing upon the space above her right index finger.

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

Anna chanted slowly again, twisting the strand of hair in her left hand. She had never actually sent something from This Side to The Other Side, mostly she'd been struggling to just hold the portals open. She wanted to see what happened when it absorbed something, obviously it couldn't be anything overly big so a strand of hair seemed apt. There were so many things about Voiding she just didn't know, it was mind boggling really.

The apprentice focused Djed upwards again, attempting to empty the space above her index finger. This time not even res formed, nothing happened at all for some time. The tall woman counted how long it took until the portal manifested, reaching forty five ticks before another tiny portal was born. She suppressed a moan of pleasure from the rush of power flowing to her mind, it felt glorious. There had been no mess up this time, the portal had manifested alone which was a sign of progress.

The urge to keep it open surged in her mind, she indulged in it this time. Anna felt more weary by the tick as the portal sucked the Djed from her, feeding off her vital energy with endless hunger. The apprentice lifted the strand of hair above the tiny portal, focusing on maintaining the construct as she slowly lowered the black strand towards it. Anna noted with some fascination changes in the strand and the portal itself as the hair was absorbed.

The strand itself seemed to warp and twist rather like the light around the portal, its image becoming distorted like a water color painting. It also was not forcefully pulled from her hand as she had expected, but rather it seemed to remain easy to hold. So a enforcing a pull upon the portal was always needed to give it attractive force, that was interesting. The fascinating part about the portal itself was actually that there was not change when interacting with outside stimuli. It simply remained stable and static, not moving, expanding or reacting to the strand of hair as she lowered it into the tiny portal.

Anna quickly realized that she was taking far too long to examine the portal, she needed to move on with the exercise. The apprentice lowered the strand into the portal more quickly, the tip of her left index finger brushing the fringes of the portal. It felt rather like she had touched ice, prompting her to release her hold on the strand and let it fall into the portal. She lost concentration as well, her tie to the portal severing as she didn't feed it the needed Djed. It fizzled and warped in the air slightly for a moment, before shrinking until it completely disappeared.

She stared at the space the portal had occupied, her curiosity only further stimulated. This exercise had initially been about opening and closing portals, but now Anna found her mind occupied with other musings. The most prominent of them being what would happen to a portal that came into contact with something large than it could contain. The apprentice gauged her Djed reserved and wondered if she would even have the energy for an experiment like that. She wouldn't need to keep the portal open long, just a few ticks.

The previous portal being kept open for longer than needed had taken its toll on her, light patches of sweat had formed on her skin and her breath was slightly more labored than before. Likely she would not make it to five portal today, however she could settle with four and still come out with useful information. Anna nodded, pleased with this compromise.

Anna first needed to create something larger than the portal itself, so she idly clenched her right fist and started generating res. The warm liquid pooled along her knuckles and was lifted up to hover over her open and waiting left hand. She generated enough to form a ball of res slightly larger than the portals she'd previously manifested, willing it to start to transmute into smooth stone. A slight wave of euphoria washed over her, the drain on her Djed far less than it had been with the portals. In fact this served to take the edge off as Anna allowed herself to fall into the pleasurable feelings.

The smooth grey stone fell into her left hand, the sudden added weight forcing her hand down a fraction of an inch. This accomplished Anna focused upon her right index finger, ready to form another portal to The Other Side. The apprentice was certainly feeling the weight of casting upon her, that limit was fast approaching. Anna hypotheses was that the rock's center would be cut off from the rest and absorbed into the Void.

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla."

"Sutla gug. Gug sutla"

Anna started the last chant of the day, intending to avoid personal magic for the rest of today. She focused the Djed in her hand upwards into the space above her finger, emptying the space out. Nothing happened at first, but she kept her concentration towards the space as she knew by now that the portal would take a bit of time to form. She counted the ticks, this time it took about forty chimes before a small black portal formed over her finger.

Djed rushed from her body, the urge surging in her mind as the black spot was fed more Djed to be kept open. Blood started dribbling from her nose as sweat formed across her body, as she was drawn further and further towards overgiving territory. Anna knew she was not going to be able to hold this for long, she needed to wrap this up before things got much worse. Something told her that overgiving in Voiding would not be a very pleasant thing to experience.

She lifted her left hand above the swirling portal, placing the ball of rock between her thumb and forefinger. She aimed it as carefully as the shaking limb would allow, dropping it once she was certain it was in place. The results were not exactly what she had expected, not awful but certainly not expected.

The second the rock had hit the portal it seemed to halt in the air for a moment, much a large object would have been if dropped on a physical opening to small for it to fit in. That moment passed very quickly as her connection to the portal severed abruptly, the rock hitting the floor as a whole object. That was certainly an interesting result compared to what she had expected, it also brought up a possible defense if she ever found herself against a Voider.

An object larger than the portal could not be absorbed as a whole, but not only that it overwhelmed the portal itself which caused a collapse. By extension that meant that even if a Voider could manifest a portal large enough to consume her, she could still manifest an earthen construct large enough to overwhelm it. That held some promise, it also made her wonder how large a portal to the Void could be made.

Anna wiped the blood from her nose and laid back on her mat with a slight groan, she needed to rest for a little bit before heading to the Palsa Hydrasa. The weight of her casting was still heavy upon her, just a bell or two would be enough before she needed to report to Amaryllis. It wasn't like she'd be much use if she was dead weight when she arrived. Still, today had yielded some interesting results that only served to increase her interest into matters of the Void.

Interesting read! Lol keep it up. I gave you an extra point for the level of detail you provided in this thread. While she was not really DOING anything, your writing really shows the level of difficulty it is to even open a portal at her level. Once more excelent job and PM me if you have any questions :)
