A Shadow In The Brush (Assilsa)

Fall 50th 513AV

"The scent in the soil is still fresh," the dog thought to himself as his paws tread over the fallen leaf and dried twigs from the trees above.

There wasn't a moon to be seen in the sky as the stars burned brightly in the pool of inked darkness and shimmered like the glint off of the ocean's surface. If the stars were not present Damian would not have been able to judge the subtle shadows cast by the star's light over the earthen surface of his hunt. He paused when he heard a noise of foliage as it snapped against the weight of a body. He sniffed the air and could smell the scent of familiar wolves in the distance. He knew the pack had surrounded the doe with him at the front.

Still he moved slowly under the trees and bush as he slowly made his way forward. Patience was a virtue and careful planned movements to position themselves downwind helped conceal their presence. His feet worked together as the hind legs met with the front paws to step in the same spot as the last. With care he set his front paws down in front of him as he lurked closer to the doe out of his sight other than the musk that radiated from it. His stomach growled as a leaf brushed against his nose, the scent of deer thick on it as he continued to move. He could sense the excitement of the others around him as they followed his lead and continued to move in on the catch.

Soon his eyes caught the glimpse of a spade and fluffy tail as it flicked in the air. The doe now in sight he waited for the others. The wind shifted as Damian no longer could smell the wolves around him nor the doe's. It was then the deer's head pulled up from the bit of roughage it munched on. It's ears stood alert as it looked around alerted to the dangers in the shadows. It happened fast as the first wolf ran toward the doe out of the shadows. The brown fur appeared silver to Damian as he stepped into the clearing and watched as the other wolves lunged at the deer's throat and body.

Damian darted toward the doe as well just as it turned and escaped the powerful and sharp teeth of a wolf. Its wounds were great as the blood covered the short brown fur. Damian lept and dug his jaws into the Doe's flesh and growled. It only slowed the animal down as the others moved in for the kill as well. Damian's body twisted as he attempted to throw the deer to the ground. It was only as more bodies latched to the neck before the doe collapsed onto the forest floor. The distressed bleats grew louder and louder before they ceased. The death for the animal wasn't quick as his jaws let go of the carcass. Teeth on display as he licked his jaws clean of the blood with a snarl.

Excited growls and yips came from the pack as they began to feast on the kill. But as Damian attempted to get closer to it he was met with snarls and warning nips of jaws from the others around him. He growled back and attempted to fight his way into the kill as well but was swiftly bitten and thrown away. He paced around the other wolves with his ears folded back as he watched as the meat vanished from bone. He limped on his front paw some as the bite from the other wolf was enough to pierce flesh and the message was clear.

Minutes passed before he approached again, less of the wolves were around now. He was still given low growls of warning as his jaws dug into the scarce amount of meat left on the doe. He whipped his jaw and tore some of the meat away and even broke a rib from the carcass. Another wolf growled and ran up to him with a firm snarl. Damian collapsed to his side as his ears continued to lay pinned to his head. He rolled to his back and exposed his belly to the alpha, the scrap of bone and meat still in his jaws. The alpha nipped at Damian and nudged him away with a snarled growl and it didn't take him long to turn back to his feet and run back into the shadows. His tail remained in his leg as he left the scene before he dropped his piece of meat in another clearing.

This bit of sparse land was not naturally formed however, but it was one that was made by man. The road that lead to the gates of Nyka was familiar, the pack had often hunted near it. The waste human left would attract the animals and made it prime hunting areas for small prey. But now in the night he didn't mind the openness as he tore into the cartilage and bone from a fresh doe completely oblivious of his surroundings as he crunched on the meat.

A Shadow In The Brush (Assilsa)

Night was feared most in all of Nyka even by the travellers, the same message applied for all, ‘Do not venture into the night’. There were always claims of locals and vistors seeing the beasts that lurked the streets after dark and Assilsa had been one of them, within her first week Assilsa had been chased down by a dog like creature. Meaning the Symenestra knew better then to venture out, however here she was exiting the gates late afternoon.

The dry leaves crunched under her pale, bare feet. The air laced with the smells of the forest, this was enough to make Assilsa lose track of time, before she knew it the sun at set and the temperature had started to drop, to stay on the ground was a death wish. In the not too far distance Assilsa heard the sounds of wolf calls…

A pack was nearby, she had seen evidence during her hunts that they chose to hunt in these same woods however until now Assilsa had not seen them in person. Slowly making her away up into the nearest tree Assilsa wondered if she would be able to take down the pack, afterall they were the reason there was no large prey for the hunters.

The sky was much more interesting when she was closer to it, seeing those beautiful stars shining brightly, Assilsa wished her hair ,that was the same colour of a night without Stars, held such beautiful, shiny stars.

Crunch, crunch

What sounded like thousands of paws ponding against the leaf covered ground drew Assilsa’s attention west from where she was currently, the pack had gathered and had possibly caught something. To confirm this Assilsa sniffed slightly, still smelling that was decayed leaves Assilsa could identify the slight smell of blood, meaning they were closer then she had thought.

Unwrapping her Lash from her thigh Assilsa slowly began to consider actually approaching from the ground instead of her usual approach. With her decision fresh in her mid she slowly made her way down the rough bark of the tree.
