It was the coldest day yet.

So why had she chose to come hunting today? Mohya had dropped her a few bell’s walk from the Bay, the smell of the salt from Water’s Reach and the subsequent Bay strong, and left her with the promise to pick her up in a couple of days while she went fishing over the water. The fall migration of various baleen whales had come around again and the eagles were out en masse to catch all that they could before the deep-divers abandoned these grounds for the southern coasts to the west.

Vira had dressed warmly since that first major storm earlier in the season and now wore a brand new Katinu with soft mink fur on the inside and slick, water-proof deer leather on the outside. A pair of fingerless gloves covered both hands and her bow was in her hand, an arrow notched and ready. Tulaj was soaring overhead, riding the cold winds and keeping his eyes peeled for his Inartan caretaker below. The woman had put her hair into its standard braid this time, but left her feather at home, not wanting to risk the bitter winds that were ceaseless from the Bay. Her bryda was form-fitting leather this time and the new set of clothing she’d received when rising into Endal included a new pair of knee-length boots, these heelless shoes clinging to her long legs like a leech to a bleeding cow. Her typical city-side vinati had been swapped for a longer-sleeved garment that hugged the neck and covered her middle entirely. All pieces of material were colored to blend into the environment, allowing a hunter the vantage of camouflage. Last of all, the young woman had her quiver settled between her shoulders and some rope around her waist for any small game she would catch as well as her hunting dagger which had likewise been purchased earlier in the season (namely after the embarrassment on the 18th of having forgotten hers).

Vira’s bowmanship had improved a good bit since Kovac had re-discovered her, and now that she had found her niche when it came to shooting, the teen had practiced nearly every day of the season, even when out on hunts. She took a handful of practice arrows from the Ranges for these occasions while using her natural arrows for the actual hunts, and slowly, the teen had begun to improve. She strived for perfection, something Kovac had recognized from the start, and when it wasn’t perfect, she pushed until her body gave out. Her fastidious nature refused to let her give in in these situations. It must be perfect. She was still far from an excellent shot and her ability to successfully hit moving targets remained to be seen, but she was familiar enough with the shortbow the Avora had gifted her last season now that her prints had been permanently engraved into the bow and the string had been replaced twice that season, though once had been from the storm on the 18th and the other from over-drawing.

And so, her targets today consisted of small game entirely: Rabbits, vole, weasels; anything that could be secured to her waist or stored in a cache until she was ready to drop her kills off at the Bay. Currently, she had caught the trail of some wild pig, the prints clearly marked in the undergrowth of moss and fern and mud. Occasionally, Vira would even bend to examine the tracks, trying to make sure they weren’t veering off course. What appealed to the young woman as she stalked the pig were the tiny prints surrounding the larger ones: this pig was a sow and had birthed a cluster of piglets at some point during the summer. It was these which Vira wanted to catch up to and kill.

Overhead, Tulaj screeched down at her and veered from directly over her into another direction. The teen looked up at him, monocular eye following his track and peering into the wood as he soared above the trees. They grew thick and shaded at this point and she had to squint to even see beneath the evergreens heavy branches. With a frown, the young woman stepped towards the shadowed grove and tightened her grip on her bow. Bear, wolves, big cat- there could be anything lurking in there! And what if a boar was with the sow? That would be double trouble; it would take more than one shot to bring an angry boar down, and that was for an experienced archer who had both of their eyes to use, not this one-eyed young Endal! What was worse was that she thought she heard something sound off down there…It wasn’t a pig, though. But what? It sounded vaguely bird-like, truth be told.

She frowned, staring into the shade with pursed lips and raging thoughts. If it was a bear, it probably already knew she was here; the wind wasn’t in her favor (or anyone’s, honestly) so it would be unwise to enter unawares. But her quarry was down there and she needed the haul after this bane-filled season. Lowering the bow to her hip, she tapped a fit in indecision and peered back up at the albino soaring above. Just as she did, the bird-like screech sounded again. That wasn’t just bird like. It WAS a bird. A bird Vira recognized from the general aeries in Wind Reach where Master Meera worked.

Meera had introduced her to her first golden eagle many years ago when Vira was still just a Yasi in training. Her affinity for birds had been apparent back then and Meera had taken an interest in the youth along with one other at the time, taking those two under her wing to teach them in their free time more about birds. She remembered the lesson of a Golden Eagle’s spirit and strength. They were not birds meant for the faint of heart. They were not for the weak-willed or insecure. A falconer who wielded a Golden in the field was profound and though there were larger birds out there that could be trained, many stopped at the Golden. They were beautiful and intelligent and more than capable of bringing down good sized game.

The screech that came from somewhere in those shadows was the same aerial cry of that nearly untamable beauty and Vira was captivated. Mohya had closed herself to the girl so she could focus on her hunting and let the young Endal do the same as she perused the trails so the Wind Eagle would not be able to sense the thoughts of her rider now. With a final glance to Tulaj, Vira moved into the wood, steeling herself for what might come…

Vira entered the dense undergrowth, tense and unsure, her bow held at the ready and Tulaj flying between the trees around her, moving ahead several dozen yards and then landing on a low branch, occasionally chirping at his handler but for the most part left to his own devices as “scout” for the teen. The cold wind had let up beneath the trees but it was still frigid as all.

The sound of the screeches had begun to get louder the further in she went and with them the more certain Vira was that it was the golden eagle she suspected it to be. Ahead, she spied a large jut of rock, the grey-faced stone rising some ways above the trees and it was there that the teen could hear the eagle crying. Along with something else scrabbling around it. Concern struck the teen at this prospect and she hurried forwards, slinging her bow over her shoulder and beginning to climb the various surfaces of the rock. Judging by its feel, the woman thought it to be granite and made a mental note to alert the masons of its existence. They could use the stone in their craft; but what Vira wanted was at the top of the pile. She grunted, reaching higher and raising a foot to get a good grip before pulling herself upwards.

Something was hissing overhead, claws scrabbling at the stonework and hissing and as she reached the top, she saw what it was.

A lynx, petch!

Slightly smaller than the Zynx but no less dangerous, Vira quickly cleared the top and drew her bow and re-nocked an arrow, sighting it as she drew the string. The long-legged cat danced around the long-taloned bird, hissing and swiping in an effort to subdue it before it could gouge the cat in return. But the eagle, though entangled by a trap that had to have been set and forgotten by another hunter, made full use of its free leg and beak, striking out whenever the cat came too near. The bird was nearly the size of the lynx in height and easily spread its wings wider than the lynx was long. The sight was an amazing one and the falconer had to be careful not to injure the bird as she took aim at the cat. The pelt on the lynx was a fine one too, no visible scars that the monocular huntress could see.

Giving a chirp, she had Tulaj attack the cat to lure it away from the eagle. There was a flash of white that ruffled a few loose hairs on her head and the harrier nailed the cat in the back of the head, causing it to jump. Just as it did, Vira released the shot. It was not a clean hit but pegged the cat in the flank before shooting out the other side. A flesh wound the animal would recover from easily but served to startle it enough to make it look flee, harassed by her harrier the entire way down the block.

The trapped eagle, meanwhile, had ceased its screeching and now sat with its entangled leg beneath it and its other at the ready to strike, the large yellow foot visible and wickedly curved talons bared. The birds head stared right at her, bright golden eyes glaring with avian intensity. Vira dug through her memory in search of the “safe” call Eagles used as she laid the bow on the ground, undid the quiver from her shoulders, and slowly approached the harried bird. It was injured and frightened and showing it that it did not need to fear would be very important. When she finally remembered the whistle another falconer who worked often with standard eagles had taught her, she was level with the bird. She gave a low and airy chirp that seemed to get the raptors attention as its head came up and crest ruffled, sleek golden feathers raising a little.

Surprised that this actually worked, the woman made the sound again and reached for the metal snare where it attached to the rock. The bird immediately hissed at her and made a grab with its foot for her hand. She jumped back quickly, a small knick on the back of her knuckles appearing before she reached for the snare again, chirping at the bird that all was well, that all was safe, that it would be okay. There was no way Vira would let the bird go now, though. Its leg had to be injured and who knows if that lynx had gotten ahold of it at some point!

“Hey, hey, easy now, easy, I just wanna get the snare. I’ll need to get you down and to the bay somehow, but let’s just start with getting you loose.”

The eagle hissed again, shifting upwards and hopping a little to get more out of range. But Vira was insistent, slipping closer and getting her hands on the snare before the bird could get her; that was only because the eagle had twisted and was now trying to fly off, its trapped leg pulled taut and its wings beating uselessly at the ground. “Oh come on, you’re going to hurt yourself, come on be careful!” She cried to it.

Vira dove for the eagle landing to one side of it and fighting to get the raptors wings against its side and keep those legs from sinking claws into her. The bird flailed and fought, trying repeatedly to get a bite on the human holding it but narrowly missing again and again. Of course, with all the flailing in Vira’s effort not to injure the bird but restrain it at the same time, the Endal was taking a righteous beating! Her face was skinned in spots as were her arms, the katinu had come loose, and her sontav was getting scuffed further on the rough stone of the granite. The eagle was also thrashing its wings against her, tangling the womans hair and leaving some nice bruises that Kovac was sure to wonder about when she got home.

“Petch, come on!” Her fingers finally latched upon the metal noose before the eagle likewise caught her with one of its talons. She yelped and pulled out of reflex only to toss her other hand forward to hook it under the noose and at last get it free. With a flurry of wing beats, the bird managed to get itself right side up, hopped awkwardly to the edge of the granite, and made to take off. But it managed no more than to get up into the air and fly exhausted to the nearest tree. With one injured foot, it was nearly impossible to get a grip on the leaves and branches and, as Vira watched from her belly atop the stone, the eagle dropped through the branches onto the ground.

The eagle lay beneath the branches now, screeching its frustration and pain, wings spread across the ground and its head twisting in observation. It took Vira several chimes to get back down, her shoulders sore and her head pounding from the beating of the bird. Tulaj was flying just overhead, keeping a close eye on his handler from above as her feet touched the ground finally and she made her way around the stony outcropping to where the bird had ‘landed’. Her left hand had a nasty cut on it from where the eagle’s talon had caught her and was bleeding steadily, thick droplets of red falling off the tip of her thumb as it ran from the three inch gash on the back of her hand.

She came to where the bird lay, exhausted and watching the approach of the human warily, and stopped, hunkering before the eagle. Finally having a chance to study it, Vira realized it was a golden, fully fledged but not quite mature. Maybe three or four years old, if she were to guess. It’s sex was indeterminate but given its size, Vira guessed her to be female. “Puh, all I was trying to do was get you loose…Damn, you got me good too.” She looked with her single eye to the gut, frowning and wondering what she was going to do about that. A new scar, a new story, the teen figured. “I need to get you to the Bay, at the last. We can take a pony back to the mountain then since I doubt you would be comfortable riding on a larger eagle, heh.”

Undoing her katinu completely now, the woman moved slowly closer, coming within reach now and positioning the overcoat in such a way that when she tossed it, it would land heavy on the bird and allow her to grab the animal up before it could further injure itself. “Easy, girl, easy now…alright…here we go….” And then, she tossed.

The katinu landed light and for a moment, she feared the eagle would flail herself into death; but after a few ticks of startled thrashing, she finally settled, chirping tiredly from beneath the dark “blanket”. The eagle had been caught and now it was up to Vira to transport her out of this wood and back to Thunder Bay. She could get Phaurd to give her a hand, too, the experienced Wilderness man surely willing to help an Inartan with their bird. Stepping near, Vira grabbed the calmed raptor and lifted her up, holding her against her side so that her wings stayed secured. It hissed uneasily for a moment then quieted once more, Vira giving her a reassuring pat with one thumb before turning and leaving the wood. It was a long walk back to the Bay.

Mohya, can you meet us at Thunder Bay? I need to arrange for a pony for a ride back to Wind Reach.

~A pony? What happened?~

Nothing, I’m fine. But I found an eagle that had been caught in a previous hunters snare. She’s got an injured foot and I don’t think she would take kindly to flying on another’s wings.

~Why not crate her?~

…I hadn’t thought of that. She’ll be safer and we’ll get home sooner. Either way, meet me there. It will be a couple bells before we’re in sight. If you could, would you get Phaurd to meet us at the woods edge? We can triage her foot there and then crate her at one of the docks.

~Of course, Lavira. Be safe.~

“Alright, little lady, two bells and we’ll be there. Everything’s going to be okay.”

The trek had been hard, Vira having to maneuver through thick brush and stone, sometimes fighting the winds as she went and always trying to keep the eagle calm and secure against her side. She was a heavy bird, large and awkward to hold like this, and Tulaj was not being any better. Sometimes, the albino would take a dive at her head, hissing and grabbing some hair as he passed. She would swat him away each time, but it did not deter the bird; he clearly did not enjoy this which his handler carried and another raptor in the family was going to be hell. He was number one, no one else!

“Tulay, you wretch, stop!” She proclaimed when the bird made another dive, this time for her face. She tucked and shielded her remaining eye, chirping sharply at the bird in reprimand. The sound, however, unsettled the eagle against her side and the larger bird shifted, screeching in disgruntlement. “Oh not you too…” she grumbled shifting the eagle closer to her side to keep her from slipping free. The bird slowly settled as they emerged from the trees to discover Mohya on the beach with one of the Avora from the Processing center. The sight disturbed her and she looked reproachfully up at her Wind Eagle.
~Oh don’t look at me like that, lass.~ The bird extended her wings over the pair and indicated the cage they carried. Vira turned her gaze there and oh’d in delight, grinning and hurrying towards them. It would work perfectly for getting the bird back to the mountain. The teen hastened to add the raptor to the cage, stopping to untangle it from her katinu before gently putting her inside and closing the door before she could sink her talons into her arm. The raptor hissed in displeasure and glared at them all but at least settled down enough that it would not hurt itself.

“Alright, help me secure the cage to Mohya’s harness and then you two can go.” She took advantage of her position this time in hopes of getting it all said and done. Using the straps that were usually tightly secured against the leather of the harness, Vira teamed up with the pair to thread the straps around the cage and then cinching it up tight to the wind eagle.

The whole process took about ten chimes, Vira mounting up afterwards and sending the message to the wind eagle that she was ready. Time to head home. If Kovac was home, they might be able to tackle this together.

Mohya took to the skies hard, her wings beating at the air to lift them into the cold winds. The ground beneath them receded rapidly and Vira had to press low to the eagle to keep from being swept off, her scarred face turned to one side and her fingers knit into the birds feathers. She flew fast, if only to get rider and bird out of the buffeting gusts as quickly as possible until the mountain loomed before them. The Ivory Aerie was on the northern face of the city/volcano which allowed for the most light each day to come through the full-glass windows and bathe the interior in brilliance. But its beauty was not on her mind; she wanted to ensure the raptor was not mortally wounded and get her leg taken care of as quickly as possible.

And that meant visiting the Aviary.

Once they'd landed, Vira hastened to unstrap the cage, the bird inside having settled enough that she was now only quietly hissing instead of outright panic. The material was undone and the teen lowered the cage to the floor. She returned to Mohya an instant later and began unstrapping the harness as well, explaining that once she'd transferred this bird, she'd come back and see to a bath for the Wind Eagle. Mohya chirped her understanding and left the girl be.

With this promise assured, the young Endal went to collect the cage and carry it between her arms through the eagle aerie and into the commons. The bright white of Home hit her keenly and she had to squint to see for a moment before making her way across the lightly furnished room to the mew-room.

Perched over her bedroom door, the albino harrier sat, his pink eyes glaring continuously at her and a far more menacing hiss given. He was not pleased to see such a thing back here after he'd gone out of his way to protect his caretaker. And what did she do when he threw himself at that cat? Why, she went after the OTHER bird! Petching humans.

"Stop looking at me like that, Tulaj. It's hurt and needs help, which I have the ability to do for it." Spoken as though the animal would actually be able to understand her. Nonetheless, he stared and he glared and he hissed in frustration until eventually he took to wing and left the commons to somewhere less infuriating. Vira shifted the weight of the bird onto one side and opened the door to the mew-room with a grunt.

Once inside, she opened the door to the mew and set the cage on the floor, opening it afterwards and regarding the wrapped raptor inside. It had quieted now that it was still and she considered leaving it like that for a while until the animals upset had calmed enough to allow her to safely remove her from the cage. However, logic won out in that it wasn't safe itself to leave the animal in there.

So, for the next bell, she carefully and slowly coaxed the bird to release her talons from the cage floor and allow the teen to pull her out, katinu and all. Vira would tuck her under one arm then, keeping her head covered as she straightened and placed her into the nest on the ledge of the large mew. Then, using one foot, she pushed the transport cage out of the mew and slowly pulled the katinu off, revealing the beautiful bird.

"Alright, lovely, I'm going to go get some supplies and when I return we will see to that leg." She said quietly, the large and dominant eyes of the golden-headed bird staring fixedly at her. Vira exitted, shut the mew-door, and then left the room with the spare cage in tow. It had been quite an event already.
