-- Fall 71st, 513 AV --

After the recent events of the quake, Jenni's Uncle had made a decision... she needed a little more training. The anarchy that had ensued had been dangerous… and despite her skills in morphing, the younger Twilight would have been helpless. So, Altelo had decided that he would teach his niece how to defend herself using morphing… just to give her some kind of edge in a fight. The Seeker had at first been against the idea, but after Zintila’s moving speech… she decided it was her job to the city to do something other than stare at books all day. That was what had landed her in the park-like area next to the Twilight tower right after Dawn rest… Her Uncle had found a nice, thick tree which he’d decided would make an excellent practice post. It was thick and tall, it’s rough bark creating an aesthetically pleasing texture… but considering she was probably expected to punch this thing, she worried about how painful it was, rather than how pretty.

“So… I want you to start by growing claws on your knuckles… do you know how to do that? ” Altelo started, holding up his own hand to show large sets of cat-like claws. They were quite impressive, to be honest. Luckily, Jenni had figured those out earlier in the season, and focused on her fists for a moment. She pulled at the Djed there, stretching it into the familiar claw shape she’d copied from Crook. They were much smaller than her Uncle’s and looked a little… wimpy next to those massive things. “Try and make them bigger” was the instruction, and once again she plied the Djed. She lengthened and thickened them, in general increasing the size until they reflected the other Twilight’s. “Good” was the quiet compliment, before their attention was focused on the large tree.

“Now… if you want to simply hit it, curl your fingers in a fist, so that the claws protrude. To use them best, you want to scratch like a cat… so swing at the tree from an angle. Start light at first, so you get the distance right.” He repeated the motion once, though stayed an inch away from the actual bark. His movements were slow and precise, and the sharp claws looked like they could rip through flesh easily… which slightly put her off the training. She gave her Uncle’s hands a skeptical look, but copied the motion, slowly moving her hand in a diagonal strike a little away from the wood. “Good. Now try actually scratching.”

The younger Twilight nodded at the instruction, and once again repeated the action, letting her claws scratch against the bark. Though the morph was small, it was still straining to hold it this long… though she knew she had a bit to go before reaching her limit. Sadly, the tree was barely dented. Her claws weren’t sharp enough. Scowling to herself, she attempted to sharpen them, pulling the ends into pointier… points. Once again she tried the move, this time slowly scratching with first her right than her left hand. It was strangely satisfying to see light but obvious scratches appear in the dark bark. Letting herself grin wryly, Jenni tried again, this time forcing her claws deeper. It was harder this time to drag them through the wood, and when it became hard to pull them out, Altelo commented “To go deep, you need to go faster, with more force.” This caused the younger woman to balk slightly, and glance at the tree doubtfully. Faster? How would she know she would hit the tree? Wouldn’t that… hurt? Still, she didn’t complain about the instructions, and tried again.

Despite her reluctance to follow the instructions, Jenni did, though spent a moment eyeing the tree suspiciously, as if it would hurt her. Still, it was an inanimate object… if anything would be hurting her, it would be herself. She cautiously raked one claw at it, gauging the distance, before coming in more quickly with the other. She swung her right hand in a hard diagonal across the trunk, and was amazed by the lack of resistance… before she realized she’d completely missed. Scowling, she tried again with the other hand, moving into the trunk deeper with force mostly brought from her irritation. It felt good to scratch something, like a cat, as much as she preferred to avoid violence. This time the blow seemed to work, and her claws raked through the bark in a deeper scratch than before… but there was only so much blunt force could do, and she still felt resistance going through.

Pausing, she glanced down at her claws, a few drops of sweat tipping her forehead… she’d been holding the claws too long. Slowly and carefully she let them go, allowing her flesh to sink back to its normal state. She wrung her hands awkwardly, finding them stiff and awkward from the fists she’d made. The morphing and general physical effort had tired her out, and she wiped the liquid from her forehead with her palm. “I couldn’t hold it for too long” she admitted, glancing up at Altelo. The older man nodded with a smile, before picking up the cutlass that had been lying nearby. She knew her uncle was more adept with that weapon than actually using his hands- he was just teaching the basics in that art to her. But great… more training. She almost gave Altelo a hopeless look but contained it just in time, instead giving the blade a skeptical look. She didn’t like blades. Too dangerous. Books were better. Someone had once said that the ‘pen is mightier than the sword’, and though such a statement could easily be debated, she was much more comfortable with the former than the latter. She hadn’t actually handled the latter either… and honestly didn’t want to.

“That’s okay. Would you like to learn how to handle this, or take a break… and then we’d work on morphing.” Listening to the man speak, the younger morpher remarked on how calm he always seemed… how sensible. Honestly, she couldn’t think of a better man in their family to run the Twilight house. He was certainly better than Weisur, in her opinion… and her father would probably have a number of problems with that sort of job. Taking the safer options, she waved her hands in a negative gesture and replied “The latter please… I don’t like swords.” She didn’t like blood… and the whole point of a sword was to draw it. If she ever had to seriously use a weapon, it would be some kind of blunt thing. Maybe she’d poke them with a quill. However, she’d (secretly) enjoyed scratching the tree… using morphing for something other than fun had been entertaining, and hitting the tree had been remarkably satisfying. She’d been feeling pretty helpless during the riots, locked up in the Twilight Tower, but now… maybe she’d actually be able to do something.

She took a seat by the base of the tree, leaning against its trunk. She closed her eyes, not really caring what Altelo was doing. She took a few moments to gather herself, allowing her legs to slowly unfold onto the grass. Though the morphing had been small, she’d held it for longer than usual… and wanted to let her body remember its usual shape before continuing. She really, really didn’t want to overgive, mostly for the negative health reasons… but also because she didn’t want to face the embarrassment from having claws or something similar stuck on her hands.

After she felt a little more rested, Jenni pushed herself up, nodding to her Uncle, who had been sitting gazing vaguely into the distance. He glanced up, and smiled softly at his niece. “I think I’m going to focus a little more on morphing right now… and get to the physical stuff later. I want you to start studying a full animal form… you won’t be able to transform your whole body, of course… but you can work on something like a tail, or legs. Alright?” When the younger Twilight nodded, actually intrigued by this new experiment, his smile grew wider. She wondered where he’d find the model in the first place… but her question was quickly answered as she watched the man slowly but easily shift into the form of a snow leopard. She’d seen that one multiple times before, and she knew her uncle was a skilled morpher, but seeing the change was still quite amazing. In moments, a full sized cat sat before her, head resting lazily on its paws. She saw a small pile of clothes lying on the side, and thought offhand when they’d been removed. Still, she stared at the form, feeling a little more comfortable with a cat than a person… she kept forgetting that this was Altelo, but gave up trying to tell the difference.

The leopard stood and turned, allowing her a fuller look at its – his – body. The tail, which had been recommended as a starting point, was well displayed, and she moved over to sit close enough and inspect the extra appendage. Humans didn’t have anything vaguely similar, though those familiar in human anatomy had identified a kind of bone where the tail would normally come out of… but she was clueless in the medical field. Leave that to the Catholicon healers. Taking a good look at the tail, she saw how long it was… a little longer than her own leg, and incredibly fluffy… the hair was much longer than Crook’s, despite the fact that the cat was a longhaired species. Tentatively, the Twilight poked the fluff, and found that the tail was about three quarters… hair. Mentally, she tried to imagine the setup of something like that. A small, round, circle of flesh… covered with the patterned hair. She’d have to deal with the pattern later, though. The tip had black hairs, however, compared to the rest of the body.

Now that she had a general setup in her mind, she asked her uncle “Could you move it, please? Your tail. I want to see how the joints work.” The request was immediately granted, and the leopard slowly shifted his tail back and forth, twitching it tip once or twice as well. He even curled it straight up, as far as it would – should – go. Mentally, Jenni noted these all down, coming up with a mental, sensible model. Most of all, she wanted the tail to work like a normal tail. Appearances could be perfected, but this was her first time creating a whole new and completely different body part. However, she did know that her morphing probably wouldn’t allow her to grow something so big… meaning she might have to scale it down a bit… if that was even possible. She frowned at the furry appendage, working things out in her mind. Maybe, just maybe she could make something that large… but she doubted it. That would be straining herself, and her Djed too much. Maybe… if it was shorter? Half the length? That might work…. Yes.

A vague smile breaking out on the Twilight’s face, she shifted her position to let her cross her legs, and began focusing on her Djed in the certain area needed. She took a few deep breaths before pulling it, lengthening the bottom of her spine, her tailbone, and pulling it outwards to create a tail-like shape. She covered it with hairs, pale grey in color, and probably slightly longer than needed. For a nice touch, she added the darker tip. Overall, all the pulling shifting and adding left her with a thick layer of sweat on her forehead, and 10 or so chimes less. Feeling… finished, the Seeker glanced out and grinned full out. Right behind her was a shorter version of the tail she’d just been inspecting… though the spots were missing. It looked a little strange that way, but overall… she was satisfied. It looked a little strange that way, but overall… she was satisfied. Yet another thing to practice. Worrying about overgiving, she let the creation go, allowing her body to spring back to its normal shape. She didn’t feel entirely well after that, and slumped tiredly.

When she glanced back at her uncle, he’d shifted, dressed, and was now sitting in front of her in a similar position. “Very good” he complimented, pushing himself up from the ground. “Feel free to take a rest, and when you feel better… we can practice some other things…”

Cat's Claws

After a short break and some food, Jenni felt ready to do more learning. Though she wasn't entirely up to fighting, she wanted to try the cat-claw thing... see how it worked out. She'd been itching to try growing claws again, partially because of the vaguely addicting need to morph, and partially because it was so satisfying to be able to scratch things like a cat... to be like a cat. She some respect for Crook, partially because a cat's anatomy was well perfects, with the retractable claws and the like, and partially because of his personality... but that wasn't relevant to the current topic. However, when they went out near the tower again, the feline tagged along, sunning himself while the two humans practiced things.

Finding the tree she'd been scratching earlier, the Twilight glanced at her knuckles. Focusing on the spaces between each of them, she pulled at the djed that resided there. It stretched more easily than it had before, meaning that creating the lumps that were claws became easier and faster. Once she’d done that, she brought the image of Crook’s claws to mind, and fashioned the weapons to appear like those did. She even tried to color them correctly, with a darker top and lighter underneath. The pulling and shaping felt a little more natural, now that she’d done the morph a few times, and she smiled at the creations once they were complete.

Curling her hands into fists like she’d been instructed, the morpher stood before the tree and contemplated it for a moment. During her earlier scratches, she hadn’t even gone full through the bark… the plant was simply too sturdy for that. Still, one or two were relatively deep, and made her smile at the sight. Aletlo was watching, silently, the entire time, standing back a meter or so to give his niece room. She laid her fist on the tree, finding the protruding claws vaguely awkward, before finding a decent-seeming distance to stand at. Once there, she swung her arm up and down in a diagonal like before, raking her claws across the bark. The cuts were shallower than before, and she drew slightly nearer, in an attempt to make them go deeper. “Try and twist your shoulders as you hit, it adds more force” her uncle instructed, causing the woman to glance over and frown. The man demonstrated said move, twisting his shoulders and hips as he swung at an imaginary opponent.

Jenni nodded at the motion, before returning to her own target. Taking a step back so she didn’t hit the trunk, she attempted a few practice swings with each arm. She attempted to twist her body as well, turning so she could hit harder. It seemed to work, at least to her muscles, and after she felt ready… she returned to the tree. Readying her left arm, she lifted it and brought it down on the bark, twisting as she did, so her entire body turned. The claws ripped through the bark… and one broke off. The Twilight gasped in pain, clutching her hand to her chest. She glanced down at the injury, and found that about half of one of the smaller claw had snapped off. Taking in a sharp, irritated breath, she allowed them to sink back into her skin… leaving her with a section of skin missing, and a painful sore. She clenched her teeth, not used to pain in the slightest, and backed up from her target… she’d head back to fighting later, after this healed…
