23 Summer 508

The light in the small room came from a single flickering candle, and the wind howled outside. Taylani might have been fearful but she was here with her Mother, and all would was as it should be. It was just another summer storm, though Taylani did not like storms at all. Her red hair was loose now, as she sat in the chair by the table in her night clothes. Her feet no longer dangled above the floor, and already her breasts were budding beneath her night clothing. She hated that most of all, they just got in the way of dancing.

Taylani's father was out, there had been some knights armor that got dinged up and they had to be fixed. However Angelia was here, her own red hair streaked with gray flowed down as well. Taking the seat beside her daughter, Angelia places wire, and a handful of pearly white beads on the table. The older red head then laid another handful of small silver studs and a needle nosed pair of pliers.

"To keep our minds off the storm outside Tayla, I thought we would string up a necklace for you to wear at your recital in three moon turns." Her voice was husky, low pitched for a woman but her tones were mellow and rich. Taylani always loved to hear her mother's voice, finding it soothing and relaxing.

"Mama I don't like to make jewelry."" Taylani said, with only a small amount of petulance in her voice. Even as she spoke, her hands reached for the wire and measured out a length.

"A little longer there Tayla, remember that you need to leave room enough for the clasp and for the studs that will hold the beads in place." Angelia does not move to help her daughter, tonight Taylani will make the necklace all by herself. Taylani glanced up at her mother with a slightly annoyed glance but dutifully measured out another inch of wire before snipping the metal with a audible 'click'.

Next Taylani looks over the various different fasteners that her mothers craft box contained, blue eyes scanning every one carefully. This was an important decision because it would determine how the beads would lay. "I don't want a 'V' neck Mama, I want a nice oval shape. Which clasp would work better?" Taylani asked, as much as she complained about doing jewel crafting she didn't mind it much when she was actually doing it.

Angelia leans closer, her blue eyes faded with age searches, and then picks up a screw clasp. The clasp was silver, to match the silver studs and had threaded spaces. With a quick turn of her finger and thumb the metal parts and comes apart into two section. Both sections are connected to an eye hook, holding them up to her experienced eye she examines them for flaws before handing them to Taylani. "The latch and eye would cause the v-ing, this will keep the wire taunt to not to let the beads fork down. Do you remember how to secure them?"

Taylani, again, gave her mother a look over the wire and Angelia was struck by how grown up she was becoming. Already the baby fat had melted from her features, and her breasts were blooming. She didn't think she would ever get any hips going, and with her physical exertion in Dance she doubted she will have too much curve to her at all, but still she was turning into a beautiful young woman.

Taylani picked up one end of the screw clasp, and with one eye closed to keep the wire and eye from blurring she threaded the wire through. She only let one inch feed through the clasp, not wanting to take up too much of the left over wire. Carefully she picks up the pliers and clamps the wire together, twisting it to secure the end of the screw clasp. To be certain she then used some clear bonding agent to keep the twist from becoming undone.

Next Taylani sets aside the wire and end of the clasp, and picks up the matching end of the screw clasp. Carefully she sets that in the box, so that she didn't lose the end for each screw threads are unique, and she wouldn't be able to match the one she had already fastened. Angelia wanted to suggest to Taylani that she upturn the lid of the box so that the metal clasp was the only thing in there and less likely to lose but Taylani had always been prickly and preferred to learn those lessons the hard way.

After that was done, Taylani then began to count out white beads. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight. Then she counted out equal number of silver studs. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight. The studs were small little balls that will put a spacer between each bead, preventing them from clacking against one another. Another thing Taylani planned to do was fasten them in such a fashion that the beads could not slip up and down the wire by themselves.

Angelia grins a little as she watches her daughter work, and a pride that comes with being a mother softens her age lines that line her face. She was too old to have a daughter Taylani's age, but there it was. She was into her years when she finally had gotten pregnant when she didn't think she ever would have a child herself. Now her friends all had grand children not too much younger then Tayla, and Angelia felt almost guilty that Tayla had such old people for parents.

Taylani might have sensed her mothers mood, or perhaps something else caused her to look up from her work and beam a bright random smile to her. As far as Taylani was concerned no other parents would have given her so much love and care, and while Taylani couldn't help the occasional annoyance and put-upon feeling she still loved her mother very much. She wondered briefly if her mother was upset that she was more interested in learning Dance and planning to dance and compose more then planning weddings and children. If Angelia was, she never said anything, always supporting Taylani's need to dance.

Breaking her reverie Taylani looks back down at the beads, plucking one up between forefinger and thumb. Carefully she slides the wire through and lets it fall with a faint 'clink' sound as it hit the screw clasp. Next came the silver stud, it did not have a hole bored into it like the bead, instead it had four prongs on one side. Taylani pressed the wire against the silver prong with one thumb, and then the other hand brings the pliers around. First she studied the stud, then the pliers then with a shrug she fits the pliers around the stud and the prongs. Before Angelia could call out "No!" Taylani squeezed.

The stud smashed flat, it was now oval and misshapen and still didn't cling to the wire. Taylani's brows furrow as she looks at it, then back up at her mother who simply smiled and took the wire and pliers from Taylani. "The studs are not sturdy Taylan, you have to take each prong individually within the pliers and bend, so that the top still stays a ball."

Angelia deftly uses the pliers and one at a time she pries the bottom of the pliers beneath each prong and raises. Once all four were raised she removed the ruined stud and stood to walk to the kitchen to dispose of the material.

Once that was done and Angelia returned, Taylani picked up another stud. Once again she presses the wire against it, between the prongs. Then she took the first prong in the pliers, glancing up at her mother to make sure it was correct, and carefully bending it to where it was flush over the wire against the top of the stud. The second prong was next, and the same procedure was repeated. It was repeated for third and fourth prong, and when Taylani lifts it up the bead nor the stud slid on the wire.

Taylani beams as her idea seemed to be coming to fruition. She wasn't sure if the silver stud would hold the bead up and in place but it seemed to be doing just what she had wanted. She picks up a second bead and threads it into place, slowly she runs it down the length of the wire until it met the last silver stud.

Then a second silver stud is placed like the first. Again she carefully bends each prong into place, making them flush against the wire. She continues this pattern, bead, stud, bead, and stud until she ran out of what she had allotted herself..and realized she was still a bit too far from the end of the wire. Angelia smiled because she had realized this would happen but wanted her daughter to get a feel for how many beads would fit on a single wire.

Setting the partially beaded necklace down Taylani counts out another four beads, and another four studs. Already her fingers were cramping a little with the detail work but when she picked something up she hated to not finish it. She sets the pliers down to wiggle her fingers a bit, one, two, and three that was all that she allowed herself before she picked up the pliers once more.

The final four beads, and final four studs went on as well as the first seven did. Though the last one was a little bit squashed looking, it wasn't too noticeable. Next Taylani reached into the craft box, and couldn't find the second half of the screw clasp.

Gasping she sets the necklace down and started to dig into the box almost frantically. "I can't find..." She said but stopped with a relieved sigh. She had found it, and Angelia just smirked and commented about putting it in the lid. Grumbling a little Taylani threaded the last of the wire through the clasp, twisted and put the clear bonding agent on it once more. Setting it aside to dry, Taylani looked at her final product.

The necklace was passable, it was a little more stiff then she wanted, it didn't move very well but the white would look smashing against her dark jumper she wore when she danced.
