[Tisuma baths] Cleansing Grief; Unwelcome Attention

Unable to get into their bedroom to get clothes, Vira was stuck with the garments she had on, wondering if maybe those at the baths would be willing to find her some clean clothes, or wash and dry the ones she had on. They were sure to be busy, though, as citizens came in and out throughout the day to get cleaned up. They might even be busier than usual today, considering the events of the storm! Before she went to the baths, however, Vira had made time to properly dispose of Tulaj, the sadness she felt at his death deep. She wanted to be sure that he would be treated properly and not simply tossed into the rubbish with so much other refuse.

Only after that had been seen to did the teen make her way to the public bath house, her gait a shuffle and leaden and her mind reeling from what had transpired. Part of her wanted Kovac to be with her at the baths, but she knew that that would be impossible right now as he was also off helping with clean up. At the cubbies by the entrance, Vira slowly undressed, her mud-caked hands making it difficult to get her sandals off. She had to sit down at one point and work her fingers under the heel strap in order to loosen it and slide it off.

She set these to one side before getting to her feet and undoing the knot of her bryda so that it could be removed as well. The mud-covered garment was then placed on the bench she had been using before Vira unwound the knot of her vinati. The material flapped loose and hung against her sides as she worked to free the secondary knot which held against her neck. This one she finished with a hand against her chest, holding the material close for a moment before pulling it off and setting it with her bryda. She then untied her mud-caked hair (which took nearly a chime to get a grip on the leather which kept it tied back) and tossed the item in the trash. It could more easily be replaced than a more important object.

Once finished, she gathered up her clothes and headed for a laundry chute to send it down to the attendants waiting below so it could be washed. Her body ached from a combination of exhaustion and exertion. She wanted to clean up and sleep, but she wondered, now knowing Tulaj was dead, if she was going to be able to. Vira walked leadenly out of the main chamber and to the first set of baths. This room had seven large pools, many of which were already packed with other citizens who were likewise as filthy as a hog in a slop bin. She recognized a few of the faces from the Endal quarter. But all of them were busy getting cleaned so they could move to the next baths for more relaxing cleanings.

Vira headed for the fourth pool where only six people were settled. A couple of them were Chiet, trying to avoid interacting with the Avora in the pool, as the Endal sat on the edge and slid her feet into the cold water. She took a breath and dropped beneath the surface, scrubbing fiercely at her face to get the worst of the mud off before resurfacing and exhaling. Afterwards, she grabbed one of the scrapes on the edge of the pool and began working from the bottom up. The teen sat onto the ledge in the pool and used the scrape to get the mud off the tops and bottoms of her feet before dragging it methodically up her legs. Each scraped pulled a thick layer of the ash-thickened goop which only served to stain the water even more. The current in the pool was strong, though, flushing fresh water in at the surface and draining old water out at the bottom in an attempt to keep it as clean as possible.

Vira continued scraping, placing first one foot on the ledge to her left and working the scraper up the front, sides, and back of her thigh so that more of the mud was removed. Then, she moved to her torso, using her free hand and the scraper to get the thickest of the mud off her hips and abdomen. Likewise, did she scrape around her breasts, using her fingers to clean the entire surface before finally coming up to her face and her neck. The woman took care with the scraped down her back, mindful of where the scarring near her kidneys was.

This part took several more chimes of the nearly bell she’d already gone through getting the rest of her cleaned up. She managed to, at last, get the majority off before turning to her hair. Part of it had been soaking throughout the cleaning and during this process, three of the current pool users had already moved on to the next pool. Their departure allowed for three more figures (all Endal) to join the pool and begin the process of cleaning themselves, too. These three looked fairly sooty, Vira noticed, though one appeared to have blood in his hair and down his face.

Rinsing her hair of the mud took another half a bell since a good portion of it had already dried and with the ash having mixed into it, she was having difficulty getting the gunk out. But, with patience, she persevered, at last removing the remaining clump at the top of her head with some vigorous scratching of her fingers. All that was left was to clean between her toes and then flush her ears.

Both spots Vira took great care around, her digits working between her toes to pull the clumps of mud out while she kept her head tilted down into the water first on one side, then on the other until the mud had loosened in her ears and simply washed out.

Now that she was finished in the miners pool, Vira climbed back out and moved down the path to the next pool. It was larger and only had the one, but was virtually packed like sardines with citizens. There was also quite a line of folk waiting to get into this one, many of which looked like Vira in terms of filthiness. Their hair and body was stained with mud and each looked bone wary. Some of the individuals appeared to have some of the Tisuma attendants working with them and Vira wondered if she might be able to recruit one for herself from a Chiet that was using one.

The din around this bath was regular but not loud and resembled what one expected to hear when standing in line for meals in the Kitchens. The thought made her laugh a little and reminded her that she needed to go and get some food, too. She turned this from her mind when a cluster of Avora exited the pool and went to the next, freeing it up for others to get in. Vira, for once, took advantage of her station and entered the pool ahead of a cluster of Chiet and Avora with little argument.

Once in, she used her feet to swirl the sand up around her and used it to scrub again, pulling even more of the mud off that she’d been unable to free previously. It took several more chimes, but once she was finished, the mud was gone, leaving only the smell of her own sweat and residual aroma of earth. She’d been in the baths nearly three bells already, most of the time having been spent waiting for a pool to free up before she could bathe.

Freed of the worst of the grit and dirt, Vira climbed out of this pool feeling even more sore than she had started out being and came to the third pool. This one, the salt pool, had half again as many as the main pool did since many were just coming to get a good rinse before returning to the cleanup that was going on following the storm. Most of the faces were Endal and Avora and half of those had a Chiet attendant with them, the attendant working diligently to clean them up. There were only a couple attendants standing at the back waiting for someone who needed aid, and for once, Vira was glad to ask for one.

She waved a young man over whose name, she learned, was Tohu. He had shaggy blonde hair with streaks of red in them and his eyes were a gentle brown. His speech was calm but confident and he explained what he could do for her while she bathed. In the end, Vira told him “I just want help with my hair. One of the rooms in my home had been flooded with mud and I got caught in it when I opened the door. Just help me clean it out.”

A simple enough task for the young man who likely had better skills than ‘hair washing’ to use, but Vira didn’t want anything else. She only wanted to get cleaned up and relax in the next set of baths for a while before she returned to the rest of the city and got back to work. Vira sat in the waist deep water with Tohu behind her, his fingers working through her hair steadily while she scrubbed the rest of her body. The soft sponges that had been harvested worked perfectly for the task at hand and the teen took care to work through all the folds in her skin, being sure that no mud went unmissed and no spot unscrubbed. It left her skin feeling light and fresh in the warm water and she couldn’t wait for the bath salt pools when things would grow in comfort! She was glad for the Chiets assistance and made a note to tip him when she got her money. This process took another full bell before Vira was confident enough to move to the next pool.

Even fewer were around in this one, most of them Endal simply there to relax. Vira slid into the hot waters and sighed, feeling the tension in her body begin to abate almost immediately. It was extremely soothing and the sweet honey and mint that had been mixed with the water was even more comforting. The one eyed woman turned her back on the rest of the pool to lay her arms on the edge and rest her chin atop them. Her eyes would close and she would exhale, comforted by the balmy warmth that permeated around her.

Vira sighed, simply soaking up the warmth and gentle lapping of the water with a smile on her face. It was clearing her nose just breathing in the aromatherapy of it all and she could feel the tension slowly seeping out of her limbs; until a hand crept into the curve at the bottom of her spine and a mouth was pressed against her ear, whispering something to her.

“You know, you could relax with me if you were so inclined…” The words were far too sultry and inviting and the hand that moved from the base of her spine to the curve of her rump was much more intimate that she allowed.

While keeping her eyes shut, the Endal replied firmly, “Remove your hand from my ass or I will break it.”

“Oh, that’s not very nice and you know it.” The hand squeezed and the woman’s eyes shot open and she turned her head towards the bold man. He was still stroking the smooth flesh and it was moving lower than she would have liked.

“Last chance, remove your hand or I will break it.” She said through grit teeth, her one-eyed stare fixed upon him with enough hate to melt steel. Vira could feel his fingers stretching lower and immediately, she clamped her thighs together, appalled. The woman rounded on him, only half aware that a few of the others in the baths were purposefully avoiding the scene. Her hand grabbed his and she twisted it hard, making him yelp but she did not hear the satisfying snap of a wrist actually breaking. “I told you to not touch me. Petching moron.”

Vira shoved him away now and hurriedly climbed out of the water, head up and shoulders back, trying to keep a dominant and confident air when inside she was reeling and horrified at what had happened. She hoped one of the other pools would be empty, the teen really just wanted to collapse into it and sob a little while after that. She further hoped that the man would not follow her…Would she have the resolve to do what was necessary if he came at her again?

She hoped so.
