The Great Library Entrance, Citadel, Sahova

Pan had had enough! He was tired of fearing his own abilities. Was it too much to ask for some confidence in his voids? Animation and his tinkering with the crafting of golems was coming along finely. He had no objections there. But his grasp of the Void, though relatively accurate and informed, was tempered with trepidation. That would just not do. He needed to find some way to gain confidence in the field. Was he destined for failure in the art. Was it simply too much knowledge for one wizard to master animation and voiding?

No of course not! He had seen wizards with more than one ring on their dead hands here in Sahova. He thumbed his own subconsciously. He had taken to doing it when his nerves were getting the better of him. Pandaemus had decided the Great Library was as good a place as any to start. It certainly held knowledge of the subject, and perhaps it would help him overcome his dread. It was certainly worth a try. Fear of one's weapon was healthy. It reminded the wielder that death was always right around the corner, he knew. But the level of fear he had in voiding, well that inhibited him from even using the power sometimes.

The library was in the first basement floor of the Gug Adjak and Pandaemus knew the location well, though had little time for reading now. Cid, his slavemaster as he referred to him, had him working almost nonstop down in the lab. Pan’s preoccupied frown creased the now white skin of his face. His body had paled and was not unmistakably a corpse. Most noticeably for him, his hands had thinned out and seemed eerie in their movement. Unnatural was the word. But he had started to numb to the unnaturalness of his state.

His staff hissed and slinked about itself as he listened to the thudding of the wood on the stones of the citadel. Quiet. It was almost always quiet. Most of the occupants of the dark castle were shut away within the Gug Adjak, bent over their work with little regard for the world around them. But Pan was still cursed with youth. His sense of discovery made him somewhat antsy in what little down time he had. Applying himself wholly to his tasks, he had been able to avoid it. However, the thrill of new discovery in his animations and tinkering was not always a remedy for his anxiousness. The self discovery of a teen was plaguing his halted aging. He was eternal now, but still walked in the shadow of life.

The apprentice had hardly lived for ages, like some of the ancient personages of Sahova. But he was faced with an eternity of existence. It troubled him deeply, this inevitable boredom and detachment from the world. The thought deeply troubled him to the point of ignorance of what was in front of him.

A woman was standing in front of the doors to the Great Library. Pan slowed his walk as he approached and scrutinized the woman more closely. She was tall, too tall for a woman by Pandaemus’ limited experience. Her black hair fell from a warm face. A Pulser. Interesting. What was she doing here? He saw a ring upon her finger, but could not tell from where it came from. In truth he only knew his own ring, the cog of Animation. The pale cadaver ran his thumb over it gently as he looked upon her.

“Hello, here to use the library as well?” He kept his voice even and without emphasis. Consciously keeping the habitual reverence that he used with Cid out of his tone. He gripped his staff with one hand, the wood warm to his cold fingers. The snake head gazed at the woman with ruby eyes and opened it’s tiny maw. It mocked the vicious threat of greater snakes with it’s wooden fangs.

Anna knew libraries, she'd grown up in the city that boasted one of the largest on Mizahar so it was only natural that books would call to her. However that library had lacked a great deal of tomes on magic, indeed any that were magic related were horded by the University. Supposedly Sahova's library boasted unmatched magical knowledge, though Anna had to wonder what the catch was. Probably that it was as maze like as the rest of Sahova, knowing her luck Daren Marlow himself would be there waiting behind a shelf. The incident in the Tears of Uldr was forgotten in the face of gaining access to further magical knowledge, with one subject in particular that interested her.

Earlier this year Anna had encountered a curious looking clay man, one who had possessed knowledge of the art known as Summoning. The University had recently outlawed the practice or teaching of Summoning, all tomes that might have once been related to it were beyond her grasp. Perhaps then Sahova might help illuminate her understanding of this art, the ability to open portals to places in this universe rather than the Void.

She stood outside of the doors to the library, taking a deep breath and readying herself for what laid beyond. The last time she had entered some place unannounced the Citadel's Master of Reimancy had tried to fry her. The woman most certainly was not looking for a repeat experience. It was unlikely going into this place, but one never knew what dangers could be around the next corner.

A voice drew her attention away from the door and on to someone else, a man's whose dead looking skin and the signature dark rings around his eyes pegged him as a Nuit. Her gaze glanced down to his hands, noting the bronze apprentice ring circling a finger. Its shape was that of a cog, the design not being one she was familiar with. She didn't know who this man was, nor where in the Citadel he stood other than being an apprentice. Finding that out seemed rather important to interaction, however first things first.

"I am indeed. I have bit of research off of my normal subject to conduct, a flight of fancy I suppose." She responded, flashing the Nuit a bright smile.

"Where are my manners? I'm Annalisa Marin, Apprentice Wizard to Chief Embalmer Amaryllis. Might I have the pleasure of your name?" The sorceress said, extending a hand out cautiously to him.

That hissing staff certainly did not look friendly, risking getting bitten by it was certainly not on her to do list today. For all she knew it could be venomous, begging the question how the man came to be in possession of the staff to begin with. A question for later perhaps, though certainly one she was curious to know. It was obviously magical, though what magic was difficult for her to say for certain.

Perhaps he might be able to assist her in navigating this place, Nuit tended to know this place better than she. For all she knew he could have been an apprentice here decades before her arrival. Best to stick with that assumption when dealing with the undead, it tended to be accurate in a Pre-Valterrian place such as Sahova.

She'd listen to any greetings or questions he might have to say, only turning in response and pushing open the doors.

"We probably shouldn't loiter around the entrance, besides the interesting things are inside after all." She commented with a chuckle.

The Grand Library reminded her in many ways of the Wright Memorial Library, it was certainly large and had that same smell of musty old books. Odd looking golems loitered here and there about the place, seemingly waiting for something. She noted that a Nuit walked up to one some distance away, spoke something and the creature was off with the undead following it. Odd, perhaps they served much the same purpose that librarian's did? Anna was no animator, she couldn't speak with authority about such things.

She lifted an eyebrow back towards the Nuit with the staff, wondering if he might be able to clarify that.

Chief Embalmer Amaryllis. He had not met such a person in Sahova, but he was rather new. The woman seemed friendly, but perhaps that was an act? One could never be sure in Sahova. There was no need to be suspicious as of yet, though. She was merely another apprentice looking to benefit from the vast array of knowledge within the archaic center of literary information.

“I am Pandaemus, Apprentice Animator to the wizard Cid. He grasped her hand in his and squeezed firmly. He let the appendage linger there, feeling the warmth from her emanating through it. A subtle spike of jealousy shot through him at the humanity of the woman. She was alive and still an apprentice of Sahova. Finally letting go of her hand, the nuit kept abreast of her as they approached the doors.

“We probably shouldn’t loiter around the entrance, besides the interesting things are inside after all.” She suggested with a laugh. He too, smiled a black gummed grin at her. He entered, tipping his head to her in thanks for holding the door. Upon entry he noticed a few librarian types wheeling about, or standing stationary. He had never interacted with one, but had seen them being repaired or made in Lab 15, so was quite familiar with their model.

The multi-floored hall of learning was staggeringly large. Such an expansive collection of rare and valuable tomes he had never before seen. The nuit contemplated the sheer fortune held within the Great Library and it almost made him laugh. The eagerness within him to delve into the depths of this library was electrifying his deadened nerves.

He eagerly approached one of the Librarian Golems but turned to Annalisa before giving voice to orders. “May I order you your study aid, Apprentice Marin?” He waited for her to tell him the subject of her inquisitions today and ordered thus. “And also some pieces on Theoretical Voiding, please.” The living carcass watched the wheeled golem zoom off into the depths of the Great Library. It’s purpose served, it was probably feeling some sort of joy at conducting their business. Simplicity was bliss. Sometimes Pandaemus wished his attitude could be as artificial and insubstantial as the golems of Sahova. There would be less to worry over.

The nuit glanced back at the woman, again struck by her height. A living apprentice in Sahova was a very willful thing. Be definition, they needed to have some spine to them. It took more than a bit of talent for a Pulser to survive here. He had barely done it and he was undead.

Pan lead Annalisa to one of the thick oaken tables that flanked the tall book shelves and sat down on a creaking bench. Folding his hands upon each other he motioned for her to sit as well. “The golem will just be a moment.” He was far more interested in her now, than his attempts to nullify his anxiety in voiding. What was she doing apprenticed to an embalmer? Why had she come to Sahova? The nuit doubted she’d tell him, a stranger, her motivations. But it did not mean the little thrum of interest had not struck within him.

Pan’s staff swirled and slunk upon itself from where it lay against the table. The ruby eyes glinted briefly in the light of a nearby candelabra. “So how is your experience of Sahova, as a… living apprentice? Sometimes I find it hard to deal with, and I’m a corpse!” He flashed another black gummed smile her way, his pale features contorted with his mirth.

She filed his name away for future reference and for her notes, she needed to keep them detailed to avoid losing important memories. It was really her only defense against Daren Marlow, to take notes and alter her memories accordingly so as not to overly arouse his suspicion. She was running and hiding really, but it was her only choice against so powerful a hypnotist. She couldn't move against him yet, Lector Qiao's support was still far too potent a thing to fight against. Once she managed to meet this Kierra Doma however... then the tides would turn.

He was an animator as well, a discipline that had crossed Anna's path a few times and mostly on Sahova. Golem's always moved to and fro, carrying out his task or that one. A flight of fancy had once taken her interest to learn more about them, but she had never acted upon it. Perhaps she would in time. She'd never heard of Wizard Cid, perhaps Amaryllis would know a little more about him if he possessed any import to the Citadel.

The sorceress briefly considered Pandaemus' offer of ordering her books, likely it was just a polite gesture. He didn't have much knowledge of her to go off of, at least that was the hope here. So she decided to simply allow him to do so, she wasn't a summoner so if anything it might throw some misinformation his way if he was trying to dig deeper than she was comfortable with.

"A few pieces on Basic Summoning and Common Astral Coordinates." The sorceress provided him.

It never hurt to try and generalize when it came to magic, every discipline she gained a grasp over increased her odds of standing out among her peers. The true mark of a successful wizard was to constantly be learning, thanks to Glyphing she was very well equipped to understand most magic that came her way.

Magic in her mind was rather like a language, each discipline was a different dialect and Glyphing was the codex of reference for the language as a whole. Reimancers and Voiders possessed different ways of speaking the language, but a Glypher could piece together that what they are saying is the same. It was all interconnected, though not every dialect was known to her at the moment. As she advanced in Glyphing likely everything would become that much more clear, Summoning was just a new and strange aspect of the language of magic to her.

The sorceress noted that her companion inquired after Theoretical Voiding pieces, which interested her. Anna herself was a rather bottom rung Voider, still trying to understand her limits there and how to expand upon them. Was he already a Voider? Or was he trying to learn Voiding? Another inquiry to make sooner rather than later, perhaps it might serve as a bridge to collaboration if he was interested in such things.

The tall woman followed the undead man, her mind now abuzz with both interest in Summoning and prospective uses for Pandaemus. She sat across from him swiftly, crossing her legs as she did and regarded him with visible interest. She noticed the blacken gums in his mouth, something she had rarely seen in the immaculate Amaryllis. The Embalmer always looked alive despite being rather undead, radiant almost and certainly powerful. Her fashion sense was a bit odd though her skills as an embalmer was clear to see.

The sorceress regarded the question, chuckling a little at it. Most of the Pulser's here fell under the category of being discriminated against, not a real surprise if one thought about it. The Judgment weeded out the weak, and most living wizards didn't have the centuries to perfect their craft like the Nuit did. Anna was one of the exceptions, though her own apprenticeship was owed to Amaryllis.

"Well, I'd have to say you've got a bit of an advantage over me, Apprentice Pandaemus, not having to eat or drink is quite the boon as it turns out. Though I suspect being apprenticed to Amaryllis has been... more exciting than many others could claim." She replied, shrugging slightly.

"Though, despite the corpses abound it should still be said that Sahova still smells better than Zeltiva. The bars there smelled of Kelp Beer and stale vomit, and the Docks weren't much better. So I'd say despite the flaws the Island is a little better for that reason." She joked, chuckling a little at the end.

Idly she played with a strand of loose black hair, still pondering if it was time to cut it yet. It was getting a little too long for her tastes, coming well down to her shoulder blades. Could be disadvantageous in a fight if it got in her eyes.

"Also, I couldn't help but notice your order. Voiding hmm? I myself have dabbled there before, are you an active practitioner by chance?" The sorceress inquired curiously.

Being Apprenticed to an Embalmer was exciting? Clearly there was more to this Amaryllis than the average wizard. Pandaemus scoffed at himself inwardly. Of course a master of Sahova has her quirks! He would be an idiot to think otherwise. Pan stared critically at Marin as she answered his question, or rather, avoided answering it. His smiled dulled a bit on his face at her vague reference to her master hidden inside the cordiality.

The woman was careful. So he would have to be careful. He himself had dabbled in a bit of summoning in the past. He thought mentioning that may be the wrong move here. His previous master’s insistence upon the practice had been his downfall, and the cause of Pan’s rather ugly situation now. He tapped fingers on the tabletop, he looked for a change of subject.

Zeltiva! She had mentioned Zeltiva. Pan smiled at her joke, though only politely. His eyes seemed to glaze momentarily, and his face held no humor in his memory of the city. “You think Sahova is better than Zeltiva then? Even with all the… liveliness you find here.” Teeth showed from between thin, pale lips. His black tongue was visible momentarily as he licked them.

Was she a student? Undoubtedly the woman must have been associated with the University at Zeltiva. A personage of magical capabilities worthy of Sahova did not just live in a city with a magical school be chance. A dark mood fell over Pan as he remembered his experience with the students of Zeltiva he had experienced. He wanted to know, but did not want her to think he was prying, or caring too much.

And then the question came. Her curious nature seemed innocent to him, but Pan was not well versed in the game of Sahova. He would tread carefully with everyone until he got a grasp of where they stood. He was not sure what his relationship with this Annalisa Marin would turn into, but it held potential as long as he was careful.

“Oh it is an old hobby from years ago. The mystery of the black has always been enthralling to me. What did you think of your dabblings?” Pan replied. He was sure he was nearly as curious about her as she could be about him.

But they were momentarily interrupted by the Librarian Golem’s return. It’s metallic chassis shone a deep orange from the candelabra in places, and it’s tray held two tomes of mind tickling thickness. The golem stopped at the end of the table and carefully raised the books with a metal grip. It placed both books in front of Pan and promptly wheeled away.

“They are very reliable, these Sahovan golems.” Admiration threaded it’s way through his words. The wizard watched the golem wheel away, a look of critical appreciation in his eyes. “I hope to reach Kromby and Filch’s level one day myself. But it is, as you must know, a long road.”

Pandaemus pushed her book across to her. The leather of the binding making a rasping hiss as it moved across the slight bumping of the polished oak table.

Anna considered her answer in regards to Zeltiva being better than Sahova carefully, a thoughtful look crossing over her face. Both places had their benefits, Zeltiva was a large city by any stretch of the imagination and possessed a rich culture. It was a haven for scholars of almost any art, including magic though that last bit was more restricted than most. It was also the city of her birth and where she had learned her many talents, without Zeltiva she wouldn't be where she was today.

However, Sahova represented everything she had yearned for in a place, a haven utterly devoted to magical study and research. Certainly it was ruled by the undead, but it was certainly not impossible for a pulser to do well here. Her own ability to advance was proof of that, her wizard examination had been moved forward by a full 10 days so obviously she was moving right along. Soon silver would encircle her finger and hopefully gold after that, she was a potent sorceress and only getting more powerful as the days passed by. Indeed, Sahova was the only place where a wizard seemed truly welcome.

"I taught a Nuit from Sahova before arriving here, so I knew what I was walking into. She told me of how difficult things could be for the living, it didn't turn me away. The fact of the matter is that Zeltiva is too restricting for my tastes. Its a good place for a newly minted wizard to learn about the arts, but more advanced users are limited and held back. So yes, Sahova is still better than my birth city." She confirmed with a nod.

Anna smiled when he deflected her question back at her, she didn't have any problem with answering it in kind. However she was halted by the return of the golem which placed both books before Pandaemus before wheeling away. She caught two names from the Nuit as he pushed her requested book towards her, Kromby and Filch. Judging from the context the names were used they might very well have been high ranking Animators, which certainly was something to follow up on when next she spoke to her mistress.

To answer his question from before she help out a hand and started up a low chant in the Ancient Tongue under her breath. Any wizard worth their salt would recognize it as an incantation. Visual demonstrations were always the best to display.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

She focused upon a singular point above her hand, her mind focusing upon the idea of infinite blackness and eternal nothingness. This would be the bridge between This Side and The Other Side. Her incantations stayed low as she focused, her face a mask of effort. This was hardly an easy task at the best of times however her journey to Sahova had been spent getting at least a little comfortable with the discipline.

She willed her Djed to gather beneath her hand, willing it to empty all matter out of the exact point above her hand she specified when it was ready. At first nothing happened but she continued her incantations, keeping her focus upon the space. Manifesting a portal always took time, patience was her ally here.

After about thirty ticks Anna could feel her Djed rush out of her as a tiny black dot came into existence above her hand, a shifting vortex of utter darkness. It licked at her inwardly curled fingers, chilling them with the atmosphere of the dimension of nothingness. She concentrated on the spot and fed it a steady stream of Djed, simply keeping it stable at first. Her eyes flicked to Pandaemus.

"My sampling have been rather limited thus far unfortunately, I have only been practicing for about a season and I can only make it so big." She said, returning her full focus upon the portal.

She fed it a much larger influx of Djed, willing it to expand outwards which certain sapped at her strength and reserves. She continued to feed it, feeling more and more tired as the ticks went by. The urge swam under her mind, pushing her to keep going and just make it bigger and bigger. Compared to Reimancy though, the urge was no where near as strong or as tempting. Manipulating the elements was a far more dangerous proposition by her count.

She continued to feed it Djed until it reached the maximum size she could get to without robbing herself of too much of her reserves. The black vortex had grown to about the size of a fist, hungrily shifting and bending the air around it. Expanding portals was always and effort, a challenge to someone at her low experience with such things. However her increasingly labored breathing was starting to worry her now, signaling it was time to cut off her connection to the Portal.

She willed matter to fill the core of the Portal, effectively reversing her action from earlier. This sent a chain reaction out for the rest of the Portal, shrinking it rapidly in size. It continued to shrink until it finally just disappeared from existence, a slight ripple in the air where it had existed remaining before smoothing out.

"Its hardly my specialty, I prefer Reimancy and Glyphing to this still though I suspect that like all personal magic it just requires dedication and patience. If I work at it I have no doubt I'll be able to explore it much better and easier." She stated, her breathing much more heavy for the effort but seemingly unperturbed by utilizing the power.

It felt rather like she had been jogging around the Prairie, and that had only been from a chime or two of creating a bridge between This Side and The Other Side, maintaining it, expanding it, holding that for a few ticks and finally collapsing it. Voiding was certainly not her most powerful weapon.

"Also, by studying it I am able to better understand its weakness and strengths. For instance, I only recently learned that a Portal can be collapsed if it tries to absorb something larger than it. Therefore, by the right use of the earth element, I could potentially simply overwhelm a Portal if used against me. The only caveat here is that a powerful enough Pull might be able to neutralize a Reimancer before res is generated." The woman stated, taking enjoyment in discussing magical theory.

She suddenly remembered why she was here and slowly and very carefully opened the aged tome before her, the leather spine creaking slightly. Her sight was assaulting by long lines of Nader-Canoch, technically words a phrases that she could only just barely translate being used and it was just the first page. That... did not look heartening. However, the sorceress had just the way to deal with this.

Idly she produced a piece of parchment and started scribbling away with her brush, utilizing an inkwell located nearby for note taking purposes. Carefully she scrawled out a large array of Glyphing runes, singular in usage and separate from one another. She wasn't using them for sigils, but rather translation purposes. She wouldn't respond to any questions until she finished, each rune being drawn with care and patience.

Glyphing was actually another possible form of writing the Ancient Tongue, a lesson she had learned with her extensive education at the University. Therefore it was very possible for her to be able to translate unfamiliar words written in the 'proper' Ancient Tongue, to her specific runic alphabet. Since her own runes were very different from other wizard's it meant that their specific meanings were known only to her, though their uses could be easily deciphered by another wizard. This was how she had translated any tome in the Wright Memorial Library that was written in the Ancient Tongue, it took a long time to do but it helped with her reading.

Each and every rune she drew was a geometric shape, stylized but their theme was easily recognizable. Depending upon placement or rotational patterns each one contained a different meaning, it was simplistic but easy for her to know. The strokes were confident, denoting her relative comfort with the discipline.

Satisfied once the last Glyph was drawn she turned her attention back to her reading companion, regarding any questions or responses he might have.

Pan was amused with her mention of the nuit she taught. It would have helped, he was sure. But there was a vast difference between knowing an undead, and being surrounded by them. He wondered if the situation disturbed her as much as it had him when he first arrived. He had gotten over it fairly soon, but he had been undead the entire time so it was to be expected. It was still wondrous how Pulsers survived in Sahova.

There was no doubt, however, that Marin was brave in coming. But Pandaemus could have spoken of the bravery of every Pulser on Sahova simply by noting they were there. It was deeply satisfying to hear her mention the superiority of Sahova’s institution over the University in Zeltiva. He had never attended, merely looking on in jealous frustration. But now that off hand remark brought him joy. Pan could not keep the satisfaction from his gaze as he regarded the woman with icy blue eyes.

Then, in response to his inquiry about her voiding, she began to chant. It was clearly an incantation in the ancient tongue. Her words were known to him, but he had never used a chant to help with his voiding. Clearly they had come to the same end goal with very different methods. It was interesting to watch the portal grow above her hand. Wizards could practice the same magic but see it in their own way. The journey to mastering one’s own djed was a popular one, especially in Sahova. But it was almost always a solitary one. It could not be found through any other means but the wizard’s own soul. They was a person went about their magic said much about their way of thought.

The inky black portal grew and then quickly shrunk back into nothingness. The slight shimmer of air where the portal had been marked the familiar end to it and Pan felt himself relax a bit. The woman seemed to be at about the same level as he was in her voiding. He was about to inquire as to her thoughts on the dimension of the void when she mentioned Glyphing. He bit his tongue and a new hunger aroused itself within him.

Glyphing was a hallmark practice of any respectable wizard. He knew a few concepts of the art, but had been yearning for a better understanding for far too long. “Glyphing? A passion of yours?” He asked, keeping his voice calm and even. He opened his book and began to read, or rather appeared to be reading. The ancient tongue was prevalent in the text, and he could not hope to decipher it without hours of work.

The woman did not respond to him right away, her voice carrying over the table and making him look up at her again. She was speaking of reimancy and it’s defense against voiding. He watched her carefully. Her casual talk of what to him was a complex Res technique must mean she was proficient in the elemental art. A dangerous woman indeed if that was true. He stared carefully, really trying to bore into her head. But her face was directed at her book now.

His suspicion was turned on it’s head, becoming curiosity once again as the woman began to write on a piece of parchment she brought out. Her stylized writing could be nothing but glyphing. It looked nothing like what his previous master had showed him, but the styles may have some variety. Once again, Pan’s hunger for the subject stirred within him. He must learn more of the subject.

Pan struggled while watching her. Weighing the pros and cons of asking her aid in the subject. He did not speak a word until her drawing was done, simply observing in polite silence. Finally he tapped on the table. “Could you tell me more about these glyphs, my knowledge is… lacking.” The words choked his throat, not wanting to be admitted. He scowled at himself for admitting to this stranger his ignorance. But if the subject moved to glyphing it would quickly be obvious he was uneducated anyway. “My past experience was only one basic instruction, and the teacher was lacking in knowledge as well.”

The further admittance about his former master hit home a little deeper than he would have liked. He hated the nuit, and often cursed his unlife when the man was still around. But admitting that the one person who had ever taught him was lacking in their knowledge was almost as bad as admitting he was lacking in his own.

Pan leaned forward to scrutinize her runes. His pale eyes shifting in their sunken sockets. “How would one use glyphs with other magics?” He had committed to the inquiry now. What was the point in holding back his curiosity any longer.

[Annalisa] In A Place of Knowledge

Annalisa noticed Pandeamus' interest with interest of her own, intrigued by the prospect that the Nuit knew little about Glyphing. Anna herself had taught it at the University, firmly believing that any true wizard worth the title would possess some knowledge of it. Its myriad uses with magic and altering the existing forms were beyond counting, the sorceress herself was still learning the many uses and means of shaping the Glyphs to her advantage.

Still... perhaps an exchange could be made here, they had both found common ground. Anna had something he wanted, knowledge of Glyphing, so perhaps he could elucidate a few things regarding other magic's he practiced. Since he was being blunt about his desires she'd do the same in kind, figuring it was best to get everything out on the table. Since he had revealed something of his past, she'd respond in kind as well.

"Glyphing is indeed a passion of mine, Pandaemus. Before coming here I was a Professor of the art at the University of Zeltiva, its a necessary skill for any wizard really." She stated, quirking an eyebrow in amusement.

It was rather amusing now that she could think on it, she had once taught a Nuit much of what she knew. She'd given Tsaba knowledge of Glyphing, indeed she had even initiated the undead into the art of Reimancy. Now here she was on Sahova and the role of teacher was thrust upon her again, apparently it was a part she was meant to play. The sorceress didn't resent that, teaching was rather soothing to her self absorbed and arrogant nature.

"Hmm... in my experience, nothing on Sahova is free. I'm certainly equipped to answer most any question you might pose about Glyphing, but I'd like something in return. A simple exchange of knowledge perhaps, something for something. I can tell you right now that picking through this tome searching for the basics of Summoning would be rather irritating. If you know anything about it and the basic astral coordinates I'd welcome the help." She stated with a shrug.

"If you don't know anything about summoning, then perhaps something else you know. Animation sounds somewhat useful." She offered, leaning forward with a hungry gleam in her grey eyes.

Chaos was a tenant of her lord and master, however magical knowledge always had a way of sparking up a hunger in her that could rarely be sated. Anna was a wizard at the end of the day, an experienced and professional one. She wanted to know as much as possible about magic, explore new theories other had yet to dream of and expand existing disciplines beyond the norm.

"In good faith I'll answer your first question regarding these Glyphs in particular." The sorceress said, preparing for a lecture.

Teaching was so much more effective when her audience was one on one, allowing her to truly help one understand existing knowledge. It was why she preferred to only have one pupil, which had been Tsaba for the longest time. Now that she was no longer around the experience from teaching her remained, since Pan's instructor had been rather lacking apparently then Anna could fill in whatever gaps he had left.

"These particular Glyphs are things I am using in a cipher of sorts, a way of translating the Ancient Tongue in this tome to words I can more easily understand. You see, Glyphs are a possible way of writing the Ancient Tongue. The Glyph's I've written out have specific and exact meanings only to me really, I know what each individual glyph means and I know what words they make when combined in certain ways." She stated, moving her hands as she spoke as a means of expressing herself.

"I have indeed heard it postulated that Qalaya, goddess of writing, was the one to deliver Glyphing unto mortal. I disagree but it is indeed an old art that is tied to the very nature of magic itself. In any event, Glyphs drawn by different wizards have different shapes and forms. For instance, if you drew a scroll sigil I would be able to recognize it as such due to the placement of the Glyphs. However, I wouldn't know your 'dialect' of Glyphing. Its unique to you." She continued with a nod.

"Naturally this also means that it is technically possible to use Glyphs in place of normal words or letters, especially if you wish to conceal notes. Its tedious task though, so I haven't heard of it being utilized in most circles. I suspect it would be more common here on Sahova than other places, especially considering Pre-Valterrian influences here. Only a theory mind you." The sorceress finished, shrugging again and regarding Pandaemus with a wry grin.

The point had been to give him relatively basic knowledge to serve as a hook, the uses outside of just effecting magic. Anna was actually feeling a little better for the short lesson, more like she had been when she was a Professor at the University. She was back at teaching only the classroom and audience was certainly different.

"Of course, that isn't even getting into its effects on magic, which is really the meat of what it is." She stated, examining her fingernails idly.

She didn't go any further than that, she wanted to see if he would be willing to offer anything in return for her lesson. If not the lecture she had given was hardly vital information. It wouldn't be a major loss, it would be annoying but it wouldn't be anything precious she was giving away. Pandaemus had to have something to offer her, some scrap of knowledge that was worthwhile to someone of her temperament.

[Annalisa] In A Place of Knowledge

He ignored the jibe about wizards without a glyphing skill. Though it may be true, he did not want to admit it out loud. He had hardly been raised in an ideal educational upbringing. Any pitfalls he had, the nuit simply blamed his former master for. The ancient wretch certainly had enough time to teach him.

Ah, a professor. It was becoming increasingly clear now. She had not only attended the university, but taught there. He, of course, flashed back to the Cerulean Pier where he had forever distanced himself from any potential friends in the city by the sea.

But his reverie was shattered by her bartering tone. The wizard was attempting to strike a deal. Knowledge for knowledge. Unknown power for equally unknown power. It seemed that Annalisa Marin craved lore of summoning, but would settle for animation. He stared at her. He knew the hunger in her eyes well. He himself had experienced such a greedy passion for magic all his life. It was what separated those who augment their capabilities with magic from those who delve deep into the mysteries of the arcane craft.

What could he give her though? He did not have enough of a knowledge of summoning to provide any real substantial aid. The nuit had only a passing knowledge of how the ritual was set up. Unable to give her the coordinates he knew the must seek, what incentive was there for her to be thorough with her own instruction? Annalisa Marin would have to stick with her books if she wanted summoning lessons. But Animation, he could give a few lessons on that.

Before he opened his undead maw, however, the former professor began to lecture about her glyphs. Apparently such glyphs were closely linked with the Ancient Tongue. Though he knew some of the language, he was not happy with his level of mastery of Nader-canoch. He was struggling to see the connection while she spoke. How were the glyphs replacing words in Nader-canoch is it was a specific alphabet to her? Would her same runes work for another, like him? Was it merely an interpretation of one’s own vision of glyphs that could decipher the archaic tongue?

“What do you mean glyphs can be used as a cipher?” Pandaemus asked quickly, careful to enunciate every word. This was a deepening conversation. One worthy of attention and careful deliberation. “Is this a common method for translating Nader-canoch? Or do you mean that you personally use the glyphs as a way of organizing a pattern between the languages?”

But she only teased him with another comment about how much further it could be used with magic. She was still hungry for an answer from him. Pandaemus could not blame her. One’s knowledge in magic was a coveted thing. The highest of all currencies was the power within a person’s djed. Most wizards knew this, and shared that power reluctantly.

He would have to give her something.

“Glyphing can help to…direct the information input in an animation as well.” He began uneasily. His words were slow and careful, for he had never tried to teach someone before. “That was where I first encounters the art. A man and I were doing a collaborative animation and he used glyphs to channel different aspects of the source into the…shell.” His mind flashed to the hastily mummified body he and Thanadoros had drawn an animator’s circle around in a dark room in Ravok. He blinked and shook his head slightly, involuntarily. Though long dead, the damn nuit always seemed to creep back into his head.

With one look at her face, Pandaemus knew he would have to explain more. Animation was a rare field. Even on the isle of Sahova, where the norm was extraordinary, it was not exactly common knowledge amongst the general populous. “Right, in Animation one creates two circles, one for a source and one for the shell. When linked together these circles provide a platform for the wizard to transfer certain aspects of the source, or possibly sources, to the shell. Using djed from the source, or the wizard himself sometimes, one can give the shell, construct, golem, or animated object a fragment of soul. The Sahovan Wizards call this a Soulcore.”

"After the soul core is attached to the shell, the wizard can create an astral body from his own djed and attach it as well. This is what makes it possible for the golem to use it's own shell." He finished his own lecture rather proud of himself. The words had become easier to issue once he became more comfortable.

He rubbed two pale purple fingernails over the leather of the book in front of him. “Thus, a wizard can put a little life where it does not belong.” He grinned across the oak at her. It was a truly fascinating subject, to him. There were so many fascinating subjects in this isle that it was hard to pick just one. That was why he wanted a better understanding of Glyphing. It would make his animation better, and it would open the doors to new arts. The price was a tie to this sorceress. A debt to be paid perhaps. And wizard debts were interesting and complex things. Pandaemus hoped he would become useful or powerful enough to start collecting a few of his own eventually.

For now, he would try to learn as much as he could and keep his head down. Perhaps knowing an embalmer would be useful? Pandaemus’s eyes fell on her ring. Quizzically he watched her process his information. He was eager for more about glyphing and it’s many uses. Hopefully his tidbit was enough for a return volley. Their little game of informational swordplay was interesting. Pan, however, would have enjoyed a bit more straight forward study. But he would take what he could get.

Anna listened with great interest as Pandaemus spoke of Animation, committing his words to memory for when she would be writing them into her notes later in the evening. She did have some difficulty understanding the basics, for instance the 'source' seemed a bit vague to her. What object counted as a source? Was it as simple as drawing blood over a circle or did one need to drain life to create it? A charged magical artifact perhaps? It was confusing to say the least but she bit her tongue and allowed him to continue.

By 'shell' she assumed he meant a golem, his explanation also brought a number of questions to her mind. The two circles and the line connecting them sounded suspiciously close to Pathway runes, in which two Barriers were connected via a sequence of smaller Glyphs to create a 'highway' of sorts for Djed to travel along. Did the same principle apply for these Animation Circles? Could they be replaced or strengthened with the proper application of Glyphs?

A 'Soulcore'... well that still didn't aid in understanding. What form could a Soulcore take? Were there limits on what constituted as a Soulcore? Anna would need to force that information out of him, at least after she answered his next questions.

"By cipher, I mean it provides me with means of translation. I'm not certain if others do it, I just know it has worked for me in the past. The thing you need to understand about Glyphing, which many of my students had difficulty understanding, is that there is not a standardized form of drawing individual Glyphs. Basically, you could only understand what each Glyph meant in my 'style' by either recognizing its usage or the sigil they are placed in. Conversely, I wouldn't know your individual Glyphs." She answered, shrugging slightly.

The sorceress considered carefully what her next lesson should be on, she opted for the simplicity of glyphs to augment other disciplines. Idly she took up her brush and dipped it in ink, beginning to draw upon the palm of her hand carefully. She flicked her eyes up to make certain the Nuit was paying attention before returning her gaze to her work.

A small stylized inverted triangle was what form her Focus took, keeping with the theme of geometric shapes and designs. It didn't take very long for her to construct her Focus, once she was finished with it she was on to her next sequence of Glyphs. She carefully teased at the flesh of her hand with her brush, drawing a small ring of tiny runes around the Focus. This would make up her Barrier.

As she drew the Barrier she made certain to include five Glyphs that stood out from the rest of the Barrier, her Connector Glyphs. These would be attached to five small Switch Glyphs, which would in turn bring the whole thing together. Her strokes were carefully measured, taking longer than normal as she didn't want to risk making a mistake.

From there she drew five lines of small Glyphs that travelled along the inside of her fingers, making certain that each digit was included in her sweep. These would make up rudimentary Paths, which were all that were necessary for her demonstration of the augment. Again care was displayed with each movement of her brush, making certain that no Glyph bled into another.

She looked over her left hand, once satisfied she placed the brush aside and displayed the sigil for the undead to see. It was hardly the most impressive of Glyphing Sigils but for her purposes it would do. Once she was certain he'd taken it in the sorceress curled her fingers inwards and prepared to call upon the power of the Void once more. She figured it was best to start with that as Pandaemus had witnessed how long it had taken the first time, and he was familiar with the discipline. First she started up her incantations.

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

"Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla."

The sorceress concentrated upon the concept of infinite nothingness once more, allowing the nature of the dimension to fill her mind. The incantations would further increase her focus upon the task at hand, aiding her in summoning a bridge between This Side and The Other Side. Her grey eyes were locked upon a singular point above her hands once more, choosing this spot as the point of origin for the Portal.

She willed Djed to gather underneath the Focus, the vital force gathering there much more easily and smoothly than normal. From here she willed her Djed to travel along the Paths and out to the point she was focusing upon, to empty all matter from the space. Again nothing happened at first, however she wouldn't need to be as patient as she normally was. Twenty ticks later, a full ten below her norm, a tiny black dot manifested.

The creation was noticeably much more smooth and easy than it had been before, though it was still rather taxing in terms of Djed expenditure. She fed the small shifting vortex more and more of her Djed, the process less of a struggle and more natural. Her focus upon the Portal was easily maintained and in a few ticks it was stable enough for her to start to infuse it with more Djed.

She felt the urge surging much more firmly in her mind, pushing her to keep going and going. She held the power to destroy cities above the palm of her hand, the sorceress could rival the gods themselves for sheer destructive power. All she needed to do was go beyond her comfort zone and explore the great unknown...

No. She needed to simply finish the demonstration. Going further than that would be far, far too dangerous. So she willed the Portal to expand, the drain upon her Djed causing another surge of euphoria. Indeed it was impossible for her to suppress a quiet moan of pleasure from escaping her lips, the pleasure of casting in full swing by this point. A light sheen of sweat upon her brow indicated that she was indeed making and effort here. Luckily the Glyphs made her task much easier, as the Djed flowed quickly along the Path's to feed the Portal.

Markedly faster than her first one the bridge between This Side and The Other Side expanded to the size of a fist, swirling above her hands and seeming to reach out hungrily at everything around it. After a tick or two of maintaining it at that size Anna decided she was too quickly approaching her limits and stopped, willing the core of the Portal to fill with matter and begin to collapse the construct. As before the Portal quickly faded from existence, the air where it had once existed rippling slightly before returning to normal.

Anna pinched her temples with her right hand, the spent Glyphs on her left bleeding ink onto the oaken tables away from the books. Her head was throbbing as the pleasure wore off, though no insidious Sweet Whispers clawed at her skull. Still the headache was not pleasant by any stretch of the imagination. After a chime she decided to explain her actions and continue the lesson.

"The series of Glyphs I used were specifically placed to aid more focused and quick casting, the act of actually channeling Djed is made easier via the presence of these Glyphs. The Paths then assisted in the continued flow of it into the Portal, allowing for easier maintenance and control over functions." The sorceress explained at length, still pinching her temples in an effort to dispel the headache.

"The Glyph you saw in the center, the inverted triangle, was a Focus. Its primary purpose in to channel or store magic, as such its use is very wide among most of not all sigils. The smaller Glyphs you saw surrounding it were what made up a Barrier, which is tasked with containing magic to a certain area. Finally the lines of Glyphs running up my fingers were called Paths, which are used to transport magical effects from one part of the sigil to the next. Normally they are used with Switch Glyphs, which break up sigil functions into different parts." Anna explained at length.

She returned her gaze fully towards the Nuit, giving up on dispelling the headache and choosing to just live with it for now. She decided to finish the debriefing on what was what by pushing the brush and ink over to him as well as a piece of parchment. Practice made perfect after all.

"These are the basic Glyphs used in most Sigils you will find, I'd suggest trying it for yourself. Draw me two Focus, two Barriers, and connect the pair with a Path. Remember to not duplicate my style, allow your own to flow naturally from you." Anna instructed.

She'd wait a chime, before deciding to follow up on earlier curiosity. Likely they were going to be here a while, especially if he really was a new hand at this.

"You mention a Soul Core. What form can a Soul Core take? Is the Source limited to certain things, or can it take multiple forms? Give me an example of a potential Source." She queried at length.
