With Dinah finally arriving and an arena set up for him to practice maneuvers on the horse, Orion could really get on about his training. He’d warmed up himself and the horse over the past bell, and now it was time to really work on being able to move a mount in a more tactical manner. Simple straight lines or slow turns in place simply couldn’t be counted on in a combat environment. Movement was key in battle, whether it was your own feet or those of a mount.

”Alright, Orion. I want you to take it slow this first time, just to get comfortable with the course. First thing, I want you to ride as hard as you can to the other side. Come to a full stop, turn back the other way and weave through those barrels.” Dinah motioned towards the various obstacles as she spoke, making sure that Orion knew exactly what his task was. ”After that I want you to race to that first pole, turn around the far side of it, and then head towards the horizontal poles. You will jump those and then race to that flag, where you will finish. That’s simple enough, right?”

Orion rolled his eyes and tossed a sideways grin at his patron before turning the creature to face down the arena. "But of course, Sera Lorene. It's as simple as they come. Wish me luck." Orion gave the reins a squeeze while doing the same with his legs and set the horse off into a slow trot. It was somewhat relieving to be able to just take it easy on this first go. Last time Dinah had set him at an obstacle course he’d ended up on his ass looking up at a rather smug beast. He was in no mood to recreate that scene.

Dinah watched her squire at work, arms folded across her chest. He was certainly coming along, but he still had work to do yet. Agility on horseback was an important ability to develop. He’d be spending a lot of time in the saddle, more than he would enjoy.

As they reached the first barrel, Orion raised the left rein slightly, adding a stronger touch to the same side with his left leg to get the horse going around the wooden container. Once clear of it he switched to the opposite set up, squeezing the right rein gently while applying additional force to the horse’s side to move it around the first obstacle.

Once clear of the first barrel he worked at getting in a rhythm to move around the remaining four barrels. It wasn’t exactly a simple task for the squire, but it wasn’t particularly taxing, either. Squeeze on the left, shift to the right, squeeze on the right. Repeat until you cleared the obstacles. He shifted his hips about on the saddle as he rounded each of the containers. It was an unnatural feeling; despite the fact that Orion never felt at peace on the back of a horse, it still felt awkward to have to move the way that was required. Dinah had seemed to be able to move around on her mount with such grace and ease, but for the larger man, those simple movements seemed an impossible goal.

It was still their test run, so Orion was in no particular rush to force his mount to the pole. He and the horse were hardly what one could call friends, but at least it didn't try and injure him when he approached it. The squire had gone through many horses in his quest to find one he could at least somewhat get along with. He'd failed many times, but this one only bucked him when he did something exceptionally stupid whilst riding. He could at least give the little bastard a break.

Orion sat back in the saddle and applied pressure with his thighs. His mount picked up a canter and made its way towards the far pole, hoofed feet kicking up clouds of dust behind him as it made way towards their goal. The squire thought this training somewhat silly; he was no expert on combat, but it didn't seem as though these movement were terribly practical for the battlefield. Still, he was the squire here, so there was nothing to be gained by arguing.

Powerful muscles twitched in the horse's legs, pushing it forward towards the pole. Orion shifted about unsteadily in the saddle, his feet pressed too tightly against the stirrups. A quick turn around the pole was what he needed to do, but doing so without taking the wooden object out or injuring himself or the horse seemed like it would be difficult even at this reduced speed.

Orion squeezed the reins slightly, slowing his mount by doing so and applied pressure to right side of the horse, slowing it down to a near walk, and then it came to a full stop, bringing a sigh forth from Orion’s lips.

Instead of getting frustrated or trying to fight the horse as he’d done in the past, Orion instead just started the horse moving again. There was nothing to be gained by swearing at the beast, because it was either going to listen to him or not. There was nothing he could do about it besides try and make it go. He settled himself square in the saddle once more and squeezed the reins, getting the horse moving once more. He immediately applied pressure to his right side and pulled on the right rein, curving the beast around the pole.

Orion’s free hand gave the horse a gentle pat on the side of its neck as he straightened it out and looked down the way to the horizontal poles. He was supposed to make the horse jump those. It was going to be quite the task.

Orion gave the horse a quick kick to its side, leaning forward in the saddle to get the beast in motion. It was rather nerve-wracking. The squire hadn't done very much jumping as of yet, but Dinah was comfortable with him doing it - in a controlled environment- where she could keep an eye on him. He wasn't sure if she would take him out into the wild to really practice riding anytime soon, but for now this would have to do. If he couldn’t learn to be one with them within the confines of the walls, he’d not stand a chance without her outside in the dangers of the world.

Orion shifted uncomfortably in the saddle as he bounced along, feet ridge and forced into the stirrups. Each step was torment, and it would only get worse as they moved quicker and with more abrupt cuts. That was all part of the game.

As the horse neared the pole, the former doctor’s eyes widened somewhat and his throat dried out. He didn’t want break his neck falling over a stupid obstacle, and he knew that hesitation could be deadly not just on the battlefield, but in training. There was nothing to be gained by worrying about it, so onward the squire pressed.

The not so faithful steed took to the air just before the pole, sending its heavy mass into the sky and over the impediment. Orion mouthed various obscenities as they made their way up and then down, his entire body jolting as they impacted the ground. The squire immediately felt himself off center in the saddle as his horizon quickly shifted sideways.

”Ssshyke”

Orion’s feet slid from the stirrups as his rear slipped from the saddle, sending the squire tumbling off and to the ground in a heap. The creature went off a few more steps on its own way before coming to a stop, ignoring the man as he lay on the ground. Orion groaned and rolled over on his side, wrapping his arms around his body as he did so. How many times was he going to meet the dirt as a result of these blasted horses?

”Orion!” Dinah’s voice cried out, the sound of her footsteps pounding growing louder as she approached her squire, concern ripe on her face. ”Are you okay? Gods, you need to stay in the saddle!”

”You’re right,” he replied through gritted teeth. ”I’m doing this shit on purpose. I just can’t get enough dirt in my face. I love it so much.”

”Don’t be a smart ass, squire. Dinah smirked. He would be fine. The guy was feisty when his pride was wounded, but a baby when he was actually injured. Maybe it was a little of both. ”Get up and let’s try it again. At least try to fall with some grace next time?”

[Windmount Stables] Shock and Awe (Part 2)

Orion pulled himself slowly to his feet, grumbling all the while. It was a rather humbling experience once more. Three seasons of trying to learn how to ride and he was still having problems staying in the seat. It was extremely frustrating for the blue eyed man, the biggest obstruction to his advancement as a knight. Over and over he failed to make the jump to the next level and really get an understanding of just how to ride.

Lessons and suggestions alone weren’t getting the job done. So instead, Dinah was drilling it into him by having him try again and again. Orion was very hands on in many things, so she figured horseback riding would be no different.

”Come on, Orion. Feel like anything is broken?”

”My will to live.”

”Perfect. Now mount up.”

Orion rolled his eyes and stalked over to the horse, stopping for a moment just short of mounting it. ”Now listen here you little bastard, I’m really tired of falling off your back. Can’t we just agree that I belong in the saddle until I choose to get off it? It will really work better for both of us.” The horse snorted and flicked its tail about, clearly annoyed by Orion’s tone. It didn’t matter what horse he rode, they hated him. Orion was sure of this.

Carefully the squire placed his foot in the stirrup and pulled himself up and onto the horse, settling himself down in the saddle once again. His side was sore, and would likely be so many days afterwards. Nothing a little trip to the Soothing Waters wouldn’t fix right up, though. ”Alright horse. Let’s try this again.” With a quick rub to his hip and a nudge to the horse’s side, they were off again.

”Try and take it quicker this time, Orion. And try not to tense up so much on your jump. You’re getting too worked up and messing yourself up. You can do this, come on.”

Orion bounced in his seat as the horse galloped towards the first set of obstacles. He wished he could say he had a cool resolve, that he felt good about his ability to complete the course, but instead all he could think of was that jump at the end. It was sure to be his downfall.

He pulled back slightly on the reins and leaned back, slowing the horse slightly as the barrels came into focus. He alternated applying pressure to the left and right side of the creature, helping it to make the slight shifts to change direction and clear each barrel without much room to spare. He felt the brush of wooden container against his big toe, and a moment later it came crashing to the ground behind them. Orion gritted his teeth tightly and rode on, upset that he’d messed up on the last barrel.

Instead of slowing, Orion urged the horse on quicker, pushing it into a gallop again and racing towards the pole at the far end of the arena. He bounced wildly in the saddle, trying as he could to maintain control of the horse and his seat, but it would be quite the task for him to do so. It was a rather taxing thing to do, but he had had to finish this. Somehow.

It was time to slow down so he could make the turn. Orion pulled back on the reins and leaned back in the saddle once more, reducing speed until he could take the bend as quick as he was capable. That, of course, wasn’t terribly quick. He went from a full gallop to just barely more than a walk. His mount stomped its feet, eyes wide and nostril flaring as it made the rotation. Stomping its hooves, the horse was ready to continue on the last leg of their little adventure. His biggest failure was before him, and his nerves were only more shot by the moment.

Thundering hooves pounded against the ground once Orion got the beast in motion. He sat forward in the saddle, squeezing his thighs against the horse’s side. Orion’s feet pressed down into the stirrups once more. Vision bobbed up and down as he nearly flew from his seat with every long stride of his mount, though he did what he could to focus on the task in front of him. That wasn’t much, of course. Memories of that recent failure were singed in his mind. Visions of looking up at the sky and meeting the dirt were fresh in his thoughts.

Dinah could see it in her squire’s body language. He wasn’t sitting right in the saddle, and she could see his eyes darting back and forth from where she stood. It wasn’t going to end well.

Orion started to panic.

The time to jump was rapidly approaching, and he felt completely out of control. His knuckles were white from how tightly he was holding the reins, and he felt like he was going to throw up. He only had a few ticks left to make sure he was ready to go. He had to get it right. He just had to make it across the pole. Instead of setting himself up for success, he instead forgot what he should do. Sliding back and forth, he didn’t commit to any part of the saddle. He was nearly standing at some points, or fully in his seat at others. If he tried that jump he was going to die.

Orion pulled back hard on the reins. He wasn’t going to put up with that.

The horse reared back in pain as the bit tore into its mouth.

The squire found himself sliding backwards, his grasp failing him as he came off backwards over the end of his saddle. Just as he was over the horse’s rear, it came down on its front hooves and then bucked hard, sending Orion flying into the air once more. He spun a few times before landing hard on the ground, face first. A groan escaped from his lips as he just laid there, his head throbbing from the impact. It was a mess. An absolute mess.

Dinah came rushing over to Orion once more, panic gripping at her heart. Had she pushed him too hard? He should have been able to stand such a challenge. It shouldn’t have been so difficult. ”Orion! Someone come help me out!” She shouted towards the stables themselves as she knelt down by her squire. ”Are you okay? Talk to me!”

”...Can I be done? I don’t think the horse likes me.”

”Don’t move, Orion. We’ve got some help coming.” She gently touched his arm, glancing over towards the entrance to the arena. A moment later a worker came rushing out to come and aid in getting Orion out of the area.

The trek was quiet, and a few knights took over for the stable hand when they realized what was going on. Orion protested their treatment of him, claiming he was fine, but Dinah wasn’t about to take any chances. Permanent damage wasn’t going to happen on her watch. She needed to get Orion taken care of and also figure out what was wrong with the training. He kept getting injured trying to ride, despite the various lessons he’d received. It was going to be a long day, Dinah was sure of that.
