It had to be some kind of joke, right? Dinah wouldn't actually try and make him do this right? Gods, how he hated the beasts. The horse, the steed, the mount. Whatever one wanted to call them, he hated it. Smelly, troublesome, and most of all, disobedient. Or maybe even uncomfortable was a better choice. Regardless, he couldn't stand it, though it wasn't like he really had any say.
Dinah had already set up various circular targets throughout the arena, all of them different sizes and distances away from a line she'd traced in the dirt. He wasn't just going to learn to ride, he was going to ride while firing his bow. Mounted combat was a key for any good knight, and if he hoped to be a knight at all, he’d need to understand how to fuse both talents into one.
All he could do for the time being was wait, however, as a second squire was set to join them. They weren’t there yet, and Dinah wasn’t going to instruct them one-on-one. She’d agreed to help out another knight’s training and instruct both squire’s on the magic of ranged combat.
Orion stood at the firing line, his horse tacked up and standing at his side, paying him no mind, as usual. It was better than them fighting one another in their eternal war; the respite was more than welcome.
The squire had his short bow in his left hand, a quiver on his side, and an arrow in his right. Taking a deep breath, Orion brought the arrow up against the bowstring, pulling the string back as he brought the bow up. Drawing back the bow, he touched his thumb to his cheek, taking aim at one of the nearer targets. It was a little bit further away than straight line shooting, so he adjusted his aim slightly upward and released his arrow.
The string propelled the projectile forth, flying through the sky at his imagined foe. It cut through the air, colliding into the wooden target; the tip of the arrow sank into the top of the target. Although it was the outer ring, it was a hit on his first shot, a rare occurrence in his time with the bow. A satisfied smirk jumped upon the squire’s lips as he stood there, admiring his shot. Now if he could just manage to talk Dinah into letting him call it a day, everything would be perfect.
”Hope you’re ready Orion. I think I see your training partner approaching. No standing around now, so get ready to mount up.”
He’d never have such luck as that.
