The Paille Family Plantation

This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Stormsgrace, home to the Paille family, curls around a quiet bay to sprawl out past the rush of marsh grasses and through the strong rooted sentinels of live oaks into a jigsaw collection of cotton fields. Theirs is a variety of houses built high on the sands of their Suvan shoreside, some on stilted pilings and others stretched across open crawl spaces floored by hard packed sand. Marsh grasses crowd dozens of narrow creeks and tributaries channeling from the sea into the surrounds before disappearing ultimately into the forest that guards the plantation on either end.

Image The family resides in the three largest houses positioned at the points and center of the bay’s crescent moon shape. The house at the center of the crescent and perched over the waters themselves at the end of a grand pier is called the Eye. The two outlying structures are collectively called the Moats, referencing the clear ring surrounding the eyewall of a cyclone. Stephen Paille, head of the Paille family, resides at the Eye with his partner and their closest relations. The other family members lay claim to rooms in the Moats while servants live in a series of small, clapboard cottages lining the landward side of the oyster bed dunes. They face the two story barn and stables and crowd around a sprawling courtyard with patches of personal gardens between. Slave quarters dot along the single blazed road winding through the narrow strip of forest between the shore and the cotton fields where numerous, low buildings act as warehouses for freshly wintered cotton awaiting sale and/or transport.

ImageThe family houses are connected to the foot of the Eye’s pier by well maintained boardwalks. Peppering these paths are beloved gazebos and little pocket gardens laid in with religious intent. Small, wind beaten shrines to Zulrav, Caiyha, and Makutsi are hidden amid clipped snarls of azalea and kudzu, often crafted from the weather-polished fragments of glass washed up onto the shore. Both family members and slaves have been known to create individual spaces amid the sprawl and it can be a source of revelation to stroll through on a balmy afternoon. Small, single craft floating docks rise and descend with the tide along the circumference of the Eye and landward along the pier until the end of the water line for use by arriving visitors as well as tying up the plantation’s fishing crafts and pleasure barges.
