5th Winter 513

The wind was picking up, blowing in from the north and carrying with it the promise of colder weather looming. For Taylani it was delayed, used to Syliras winters it was still odd for her to be comfortable outside in the thin breeches and blouse with only a cloak around her shoulders. However the wind promised of cooler weather, and while her body was not tightening in her clothing yet she knew that soon it would be. She made a mental note to check in with Rue Nightsong again soon as much as she wanted to hoard her small amount of Miza.

She was walking through the camp along with a smaller bent woman named Sharika, an older woman who was twice marked by Rak'Kelli and notable healer amongst even the Opal clans. While Taylani sported a cloak with a purple blouse and green breeches, Sharika had a blue pant, white blouse and an opal colored shawl draped over her thin arms. Taylani was amused at the older woman's tenacity, the former dancer thought that a good stiff wind would sweep the woman up off her feet but no. Sharika marched quickly through the camp. "Listen up Taylani." Sharika said sternly, she was not one who brooked woolgathering, "This is an examination you will begin to learn what you will need to check for. I will do the examination but I will require you to do a few things as much as the woman is comfortable with. She is a fine mother, birthed four living children, has birthed six all together. I doubt she will mind overly much, but at this time if its not necessary then you don't push a mother too far." Sharika glanced at Taylani with a knowing look, Taylani had submitted to an examination not but two days prior and there had been aspects she would not allow.

"You will listen and watch, you will ask questions but you will not show negative emotion." Sharika was a fount of information, and she spoke in common which relieved Taylani. Taylani was slowly learning Pavi but her time with Sharika -the only one she had really made a relationship with who spoke both Common and Pavi fluently- was allotted to learning about pregnancy and how to care for pregnant women.

"Of course I will. The main job of a Midwife is to comfort, console, and encourage the woman in her pregnancy and birth." Taylani quoted. Sharika was quite the taskmaster when it came to that tidbit of information. "You said that by and large the female body was crafted to give birth, and that mostly nature takes its course. Midwives are there to ease that for the woman, and only in cases where extra help is needed to give. Otherwise we are to be a comfort and encouraging. A calming presence." Taylani looked down at the shorter woman, proud that she remembered her first lesson so well. If she was hoping for an affirmation of her knowledge, she was disappointed because Sharika just nodded and ducked into a ruby-tinted pavilion.

Taylani hesitantly followed, she still was not used to how free the Drykas were with each other. In Syliras there would have been a knock...but then again out here with the tent city there was no door on which to knock. "Good morning Lila, how goes this wee one?" Sharika asked with a grin as a woman of average size stepped from a partition. She was thick and stocky, fat but she had some substance to her. She also had a child in a papoose on her back as she moved about the pavilion toward the two new comers.

"Yassah is growing like a weed, this season he turns a year old and already he is wanting to get on his Father's strider. I might let him soon, especially as this one begins to grow more." Lila said with a grin, one hand caressing her small swell of belly. Sharika motioned for Taylani to step forward, "This is my new apprentice Taylani. I know that it's still a little early for an examination for you Lila but I was hoping you wouldn't mind letting me teach Taylani a few things?"

Lila tilted her head back, her experienced eyes going to the sleeping child in the Papoose before nodding. "Yes, Yassah is sleeping so let me settle him down and then we can do whatever you need." Lila smiled brightly before moving back toward the partition, waving them to follow. She did not seem self-conscious or hesitant at all.

Sharika and Taylani wait outside the partition respectfully, Sharika's hand on Taylani's wrist. Taylani grinned at the thought that the little woman thought she might be comfortable enough to go into the other room full stop. When Lila called out softly -to not wake Yassah- Sharika leads Taylani back into the sleeping area. Lila was already laying down on the bedroll, an old hand at this apparently, her blankets pulled up only to her hips.

Sharika and Taylani go to kneel beside her, Sharika with a comfort that comes with experience, Taylani with a hesitancy that comes with inexperience. "Taylani, normally when a woman has successfully birthed as many as Lila has without problems we don't generally keep a very close eye on her. If she feels something is amiss we will, or if she has had a history or difficulty. We are here just because Lila is good about letting people learn on her. I want you to first ask the questions I told you that we would ask a mother in her first trimester."

Taylani clasped her hands in her lap, her legs curled beneath her, and her red hair pulled back and out of the way with a band. "Um ..How are you feeling today..may I call you Lila?" Her voice was hesitant, and her blue eyes shift to Sharika before she stiffened her back and cleared her throat. "Is there anything you want to discuss before we begin?"

Lila grinned at Sharika, this is not the first time she has had a new apprentice looking over and it always was the same. "Nope. Nothing seems different or funny." Lila answered obediently. Taylani's fingers continued to clasp in her lap as she tried to recall the questions Sharika wanted her to ask.

"Any..ah.. unusual cramping ... or heavy spotting?" Taylani asked, this time she managed to not look at Sharika at all. When Lila responded to the negative, Taylani glanced at Sharika then. The old healer nodded her head, "Take her left wrist and press your index and middle finger until you find her pulse. Then I want you to count the beats for a chime."

Taylani gently lifts the drykas woman's arm, her fingers probing around the wrist awkwardly for a tick or two before she finally found the thready pulse. It seemed thready to her anyways, she had always imagined that pulses would be feel fast. However she counted, not really able to tell when an exact chime was, but when she answered "Ninety Two." Sharika nodded, "We take the pulse because a rapid pulse or a decreased pulse can indicate a problem with the body. And a problem with the body is a problem with the baby's home. I will get into what those things can indicate at a later time."

Taylani nods, and put the woman's arm down with a hesitant smile at the Drykas. Sharika then leaned forward and rolled the woman's top up, exposing her midriff. "Now press and measure the womb like I showed you." Sharika instructed, leaning back to let Taylani lean forward. Taylani's blue eyes remained on the woman, Lila's, face as her fingers pressed into her belly. At first there was nothing, and a couple times Lila's face furrowed in a grimace but finally Taylani felt the tell tale firmness within the woman's lower belly that denoted the womb. She walked her fingers carefully across, having to start over once when she lost track of the inches, and then repeated from top to bottom.

Taylani gave the measurements "It is about six inches wide, and four inches long." Sharika hums and nods her head. "Keep that in mind, for when we do the pelvic exam. For now I want you to discuss with Lila about what she can expect in the first trimester, as if she doesn't already know. I am going to go fetch clean water and soap." With that Sharika pushes herself up, and moves out of the sleeping area, leaving Taylani alone with the pregnant drykas.

Taylani pushed a non-existent strand of red hair behind her ear, a nervous habit, before she took a deep breath to begin. "You might experience nausea, trouble with a burning sensation in your chest and throat some call it heart burn, though uh.. it doesn't have anything to do with your heart just in the general area feels like." Taylani felt as if she were rambling, but Lila smiled with a good nature and nodded in all the right spots.

"There might be very light..spotting, but it shouldn't be more then that. If you have complaints of any of the above you can call on Sharika and there are some herbal medicines that can alleviate some of the symptoms." Lila continued to look expectantly at Taylani, who blankly looked back for a long moment. She couldn't recall anything else to tell the other, until Lila prompted "Is there a reason that some women avoid morning sickness while others seem to struggle more?" The Drykas woman asked gently which caused Taylani to 'o' her lips, she had forgotten. "Oh yes. If your stomach gives you more trouble then others perhaps eat smaller but more frequent meals. Sometimes an overly-full stomach can cause the nausea."

Sharika comes back in, with a dark haired little girl in tow carrying a bucket of water. Sharika herself held a cake of soap and a towel in her hands, she directs the young girl to put the bucket down near Taylani before she scurries off. "There you go Taylani, here is some soap and water, you want to wash your hands very well." Taylani accepts the soap cake, and dips it into the water. She rubs her hands over and around the cake working up a lather. Then she scrubbed her fingers and knuckles well until they were slightly pink before she rinsed her hands and dried them on the towel.

Once dried, Taylani takes her place down at the foot of the bedroll. Her face was already starting to flush, though the Drykas woman -neither one- seemed bothered by what was about to happen. Taylani tried to steel herself, but she couldn't help the flush that rose through her neck and up over her cheeks. She remembered how she felt when Sharika had examined her, and Sharika didn't even do a pelvic exam! She didn't quite understand yet that when a woman has had multiple children no matter how modest she is, she gets used to this aspect. The Drykas are also not a people who understood the modesty that Taylani had ingrained into her.

Sharika lifted the blanket, folding them up gently over the woman's legs and up around her hips. Lila had removed her breeches and bottom clothing, and she lay there without flinching, just looking up at the top of the pavilion. Not because she was modest or shy, but out of deference to the captive who seemed so hesitant and embarrassed. Lila had already brought her feet together and bent her knees thus opening her self for the examination.

"First, do you remember what I told you we did, when we did your examination?" Sharika asked Taylani gently, which drew Taylani's attention to the genital region of the other woman.

"Yes. you said that you were looking for discolorations, lesions, or other signs of..infection or other ailments." Taylani said, and the healer nodded and then asked "Do you see anything of note?" Taylani pushed the idea that she was humiliating this woman by examining her private areas out of her mind -Lila certainly didn't look humiliated- and she tried to look with a clinical eye. "There?" She pointed to a small growth at the top of the woman's thigh, it was dark small and raised.

"Good catch Taylani, but that is a simple mole. She is clean, there is no foul odor, no discharge and no lesions." Sharika said simply, washing her hands quickly and expertly. "Now the pelvic exam in the first of the pregnancy will tell us two things. You will be able to approximate the length of the pregnancy by counting the centimeters from the pubic bone. Watch carefully what I do." Sharika said, and then she leaned forward to place one hand on Lila's stomach, pressing gently while she examined the woman. "Pressing on the stomach will help you to identify the uterus with your fingers, the harder you have to press the stomach the earlier in the pregnancy, and by the twentieth week you shouldn't have to press at all. You will feel the hard swell of the bone, the uterus will be able to be felt in this exam at eight weeks pregnant. Press firmly, and if you can feel the Uterus just at the bone then she is only eight weeks pregnant. By ten weeks the uterus will spill over into her abdomen. Which you will be able to feel with your hand on her belly. We will also want to perform this exam again when she is very late in her pregnancy to ensure that her baby is beginning to descend properly but that is for another day."

Sharika pulled back and immediately began washing her hands, in the same methodical but quick motions. Taylani looked just a little pale but she was intent on Sharika's words listening closely. "You will do your first examination on a further along woman. It takes practice to be able to tell much on a woman in her first trimester. By the way Lila, it seems that you are looking at a mid Fall due date, a goodly time." Sharika motioned for Taylani to pull the blanket back down.

Taylani hurriedly complied, relieved that that part was over. By the way Sharika was looking at her, Taylani knew she was expected to say something. "Uh, thank you for letting me learn using your pregnancy Lila." She forced a smile, though it was not fully stiff and unwelcome just slightly lilted to the left. "Is there any questions that you have for us, concerns?" Taylani still asked though it was a bit amusing to know that this woman knew more about childbirth then Taylani did at all. However you practice what you perform, so she still asked.

Lila grinned and sat up, barely remembering to keep the blanket around her waist. She did not mind, and it was good to have one of the captives seeking to help with the childbirth. It meant she was acclimating to an extent. "No, but if I think of any I will give you a visit." She said grinning even as Sharika and Taylani stood, and made their exits.
