5th Winter 513
The wind was picking up, blowing in from the north and carrying with it the promise of colder weather looming. For Taylani it was delayed, used to Syliras winters it was still odd for her to be comfortable outside in the thin breeches and blouse with only a cloak around her shoulders. However the wind promised of cooler weather, and while her body was not tightening in her clothing yet she knew that soon it would be. She made a mental note to check in with Rue Nightsong again soon as much as she wanted to hoard her small amount of Miza.
She was walking through the camp along with a smaller bent woman named Sharika, an older woman who was twice marked by Rak'Kelli and notable healer amongst even the Opal clans. While Taylani sported a cloak with a purple blouse and green breeches, Sharika had a blue pant, white blouse and an opal colored shawl draped over her thin arms. Taylani was amused at the older woman's tenacity, the former dancer thought that a good stiff wind would sweep the woman up off her feet but no. Sharika marched quickly through the camp. "Listen up Taylani." Sharika said sternly, she was not one who brooked woolgathering, "This is an examination you will begin to learn what you will need to check for. I will do the examination but I will require you to do a few things as much as the woman is comfortable with. She is a fine mother, birthed four living children, has birthed six all together. I doubt she will mind overly much, but at this time if its not necessary then you don't push a mother too far." Sharika glanced at Taylani with a knowing look, Taylani had submitted to an examination not but two days prior and there had been aspects she would not allow.
"You will listen and watch, you will ask questions but you will not show negative emotion." Sharika was a fount of information, and she spoke in common which relieved Taylani. Taylani was slowly learning Pavi but her time with Sharika -the only one she had really made a relationship with who spoke both Common and Pavi fluently- was allotted to learning about pregnancy and how to care for pregnant women.
"Of course I will. The main job of a Midwife is to comfort, console, and encourage the woman in her pregnancy and birth." Taylani quoted. Sharika was quite the taskmaster when it came to that tidbit of information. "You said that by and large the female body was crafted to give birth, and that mostly nature takes its course. Midwives are there to ease that for the woman, and only in cases where extra help is needed to give. Otherwise we are to be a comfort and encouraging. A calming presence." Taylani looked down at the shorter woman, proud that she remembered her first lesson so well. If she was hoping for an affirmation of her knowledge, she was disappointed because Sharika just nodded and ducked into a ruby-tinted pavilion.
Taylani hesitantly followed, she still was not used to how free the Drykas were with each other. In Syliras there would have been a knock...but then again out here with the tent city there was no door on which to knock. "Good morning Lila, how goes this wee one?" Sharika asked with a grin as a woman of average size stepped from a partition. She was thick and stocky, fat but she had some substance to her. She also had a child in a papoose on her back as she moved about the pavilion toward the two new comers.
"Yassah is growing like a weed, this season he turns a year old and already he is wanting to get on his Father's strider. I might let him soon, especially as this one begins to grow more." Lila said with a grin, one hand caressing her small swell of belly. Sharika motioned for Taylani to step forward, "This is my new apprentice Taylani. I know that it's still a little early for an examination for you Lila but I was hoping you wouldn't mind letting me teach Taylani a few things?"
Lila tilted her head back, her experienced eyes going to the sleeping child in the Papoose before nodding. "Yes, Yassah is sleeping so let me settle him down and then we can do whatever you need." Lila smiled brightly before moving back toward the partition, waving them to follow. She did not seem self-conscious or hesitant at all.
