A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

The Weft and Warp
Weaving lesson

The young Symenestra female sat on the silken cushion, fidgeting nervously. Today, she was to sit in on a lesson from the headmistress on weaving. Neyasi had already learned the crude basics of weaving, more or less, at home, but, her father had pulled some strings, and now here she sat, merely seven years of age, beside the much older students of the weaving school. Her ruby gaze switched to the loom in front of her, and she resisted the urge to touch it. I must not embarrass Father. She told herself, and so consorted to playing with her own pale fingers.

At last, the headmistress entered, and took her place in the center of the room, kneeling before her loom. She looked around, before putting her hands to the loom, and beginning to speak, capturing the rapt attention of every pupil in the room.

"Weaving is the most basic process in which two different sets of yarns or threads are interlaced with each other to form a fabric or cloth. One of these sets is called warp, which is the lengthwise yarn running from the back, to the front of the loom. The other set of crosswise yarns are the filling which are called the weft or the woof."

Neyasi put her hands to the loom, along with the other students, still watching the headmistress.

"Some of the primary motions to produce woven fabric are called shedding, picking, and beating-up. No, that does not mean to pummel someone near you in order to produce your cloth."

The headmistress's eyes landed on a pair of snickering young Symenestra who'd neglected to hold in their emotions. They fell silent.

"Shedding is a primary motion in weaving that does separation of warp threads, according to pattern, to allow for weft insertion or picking prior to beating. It is the mechanism that raises certain harnesses above the others. Yarns that pass through the heald eyes in those harnesses are raised above that are not controlled by the raised harnesses. In this way, a sheet of warp yarns is up, and a sheet of yarns is down. The space between two yarn sheets is called 'shed'. Shedding itself has different methods.

Open shedding is a method of forming a shed in which, between the insertion of one weft pick and the next, the only warp threads moved are those that are required to change position from the upper to the lower line of the shed, or vice versa."

Neyasi followed the movements of the headmistress with wide, ruby eyes, surprised at the speed of the lesson, her long fingers working rapidly at the loom.

"Semi-open shedding is a method of forming a shed in which threads, which are to remain in the top shed line for the next pick, are lowered a short distance and then raised again. The other threads are raised and lowered as in open shedding.

Closed shedding is a method of forming a shed in which all warp threads are brought to the same level after the insertion of each pick of weft. They are of two types, bottom closed and centre closed sheddings. The difference between them is that the terms ‘bottom’ and ‘centre’ indicate the position of the warp threads when at rest."

The headmistress glanced up to make sure she had her pupils' full attention. Every student was hard at work on their loom, working with the threads given to them, and following her every movement and word with intense accuracy. Neyasi found it easier to follow than she'd originally thought it would be.

"Picking is the second operation of the weaving process. After the shed has been formed, the length of weft is inserted through the shed.

Beating-up is the third operation of the weaving cycle. As soon as a weft yarn is inserted, the reed pushes or beats-up the weft to the fell of the cloth. The fell of the cloth is the edge which is nearest to the reed as the cloth is being woven. In other words, beating-up occurs when the reed pushes the newly inserted weft against the fell of the cloth. Temple is a device used in weaving to hold fabric at the fell as near as possible to the width of the warp in the reed."

The headmistress sat back from her loom, displaying the newly-woven material. Neyasi leaned to the side to get a better look, despite herself. From her point of view, it looked beautiful. One day, that'll be my work that everyone admires. She thought proudly, before hastily returning to her former position, as the headmistress continued.

"Now, we will go over the secondary motions of weaving. There are three; Let-off, take-up, and weft selection.

Let-off is the motion which delivers warp to the weaving area at the required rate and at a suitable constant tension by unwinding it from the weaver’s beam.

Take-up is the motion that withdraws fabric from the weaving area at a constant rate. It ensures that the required pick spacing is maintained, and then winds it onto the cloth roller."

The headmistress paused to watch the pupils working. Neyasi was hard at work on her own loom, tongue sticking out of the side of her mouth in concentration. The headmistress nodded, to herself, it seemed. "You're all dismissed for today." She said, waving one hand. The students stood up, and took their leave, quickly followed by the young Symenestra female.

Skills: Weaving +2

Lore: Primary Motions to Weave, Understanding of Shedding, Understanding of Picking, Understanding of Beating-Up, Aspiriation: Weaving, Components of a Loom, How a Loom Works, Secondary Motions of Weaving, Weaving: Let Off, Weaving: Take-Up, Weaving: Weft Selection

Secret :
Training threads can be tough, but yours made everything very simple and easy to understand, while not dragging on or making it hard to keep intrest. I could not award you many skill points, because you have to descirbe carrying out the motions yourself to earn them, but the instructional portions were very detailed and I gave you as much lore as I could. Good Job!
