Voiding Questions

Postby Elsa Marin on January 13th, 2014, 9:04 pm

1. Can you Void a Shield?

2. I take a 20-foot pole, stick 19 feet of it into a Void portal, then I move the portal ten feet to the left. What happens to the pole?

3. Assuming there is no air or gravity in the Void, a focus simply dropped into a portal will have a set velocity that will not change unless it happens to bump into some unimaginable horror passing by. If a Voider were to open a portal to that focus, does the Void-side portal move relative to the focus, or is the portal stationary and the focus just keeps moving?

4. So far I haven't found anything in the Lore specifying the temperature of the Void. During Supervisor Draneira's defection, a Voider opened a portal in front of some tentacles, and Tarot described the flesh actually changing color from temperature shock on This Side from how cold it was on the Other Side. This suggests a temperature closer to the 2.7 kelvin of outer space than something arctic. Am I wrong?

Voiding Questions

Postby Clyde Sullins on January 20th, 2014, 7:39 pm

Well Voiding is not exactly my forte, but I will do my best to talk these over with you, and if nothing else to narrow down your questions. Though I find the questions very interesting, so I look forward to anyone more knowledgeable of this magic answering.

---

1. Can you Void a Shield?

- Bear in mind, it is not so much the shield you are voiding, but the object being shielded, with the shield wrapped around it like... Well a wrapper. So the real question here is, can you void a object that has been shielded.

I would think yes, since while Voiding is a personal magic, I don't think a open portal to the void is inherently magical, they do exist in nature at small sizes. So I think with a simple djed blocking shield, you would be able to void the object. So if I shield a rock with a basic djed blocking shield, and toss it into a open void, there is no reason in my mind for it to not work.

However when you talk about pull, perhaps that would count as a magical effect, and so perhaps a object with a basic djed blocking shield would be immune to pull. I am unsure.

Or perhaps a shield needs to be specifically tasked to block the pull of a voiding portal. If so, you would likely need to be a voider, or have one present, in order to make a pull blocking shield, by weaving a bit of the specified magical effect into it. Not quite sure exactly how you would go about that, but I think it could be done.

I leave that up to people who know more about shielding to answer for certain.

2. I take a 20-foot pole, stick 19 feet of it into a Void portal, then I move the portal ten feet to the left. What happens to the pole?

- Well bear at mind that initially you can't move voiding portals, so when you start that won't really be an issue. And even at competent when you can first move them, I believe it is slowly.

But when you can move it, I can see one of three things happening. One, the stick is pulled along by the edge of the portal, and goes unharmed. Two, because the edge of the portal is intersecting with the matter, perhaps it will cut into the substance, sort of shaving it off. Or three, perhaps the portal will be forced closed because of intersecting with matter, possibly also initially doing the effect I said in the second option until the portal is overwhelmed.

Of course that also bears the question, if you close a portal while something is sticking through it, does the half inside get chopped off and voided?

-Wow... I honestly never thought about that, I do commend you on your creative thinking.

I am unsure about this one, but I would also point out that a object dropped into a voiding portal would not be moving at high velocity, its only usually falling a short distance before going through. Though perhaps if accelerated by pull being the force voiding it, this could accelerate the object.

Also, a way to get around this would be to deposit the object or anchor through the portal via some kind of device or arm like tool, and stop its motion before closing the portal. Kind of like a claw arm or pincher something working in that way to let you pick up a object. That way when you do open the portal upon the anchor, it would not be moving.

Or perhaps this could even be done on purpose, so as to keep some sort of ever moving point to investigate via a anchor.

However... Bear in mind that when you can even do an anchor, you are at least expert in voiding, so are pretty skilled, and can likely move your portals around decently well. If you can move it on this side, I don't see why the exit point on the other side can't also move about.

Though this seems like a bad method of storing an item, since likely you would lose anything you threw in with the anchor unless they are attached or the object is inside the anchor. But if you plan to retrieve an object, I think the better method is to stop to motion of the anchor before letting it go, so the object is more likely to still be there when you check back on the anchor.

Am I wrong?

- I am unsure on this, but I usually always go with Tarot, though I have always thought of the void rather like outer space, only mostly emptier.

No sun, more or less no air, almost a vacuum but for some specks of matter occasionally. And when you are talking about temperatures that low, does it really matter if we are talking about space cold, or arctic cold?

I don't pretend to understand the physics of space or how heat dispersion works, so as I said before I would go by what Tarot has depicted.

Though since at a novice level a voiding portal is opened just above ones hand, it seems like that would be dangerous to have a source of such cold so close to you. I never thought about that fact until just now... Or perhaps thats only more of an issue with bigger portals.
Clydes Stuff

I am actually in RL a super intelligent hamster from Rhode Island, with a 7 year plan to take over the world.

Update 6/2/18- 1:10AM EST: His 7 year plan a success, and several weeks ahead of schedule, Clyde leaves to oversee the world he has taken over.

No new threads after end of Spring 518-Will still be checking for PM's occasionally, but focusing on a new character.

Graders note: :
Please be aware Clyde is a master Magecrafter. He therefore should not be gaining full xp(or possibly shouldn't gain any at all) for simple tasks related to this magic, such as low level MC items, particularly for repetitions of creations he has done before. Feel free to contact me if unsure of a instance of his magic use compared to his skill level.
