Rising Action (part I)

"So what now?"

Wanda could feel her father's back against her own, expanding with each breath he took. They faced opposite directions as they sat cross-legged on the double bed. Across from the young girl, propped against the adjacent wall, was a plain hand mirror. Wanda was sure she'd never seen the thing before -- they didn't keep mirrors. She was fairly certain that it would be return from whence it came as soon as they were finished here.

But what exactly were they doing anyhow? Wanda was rather befuddled by the whole situation. Her father could be quite strange at times, eccentric even, so his actions couldn't have totally surprised her. He had a habit of walking a rather wobbly line between excitability and composure, and over her small lifetime Wanda had gotten reasonably good predicting an attitude shift.

She couldn't say she hadn't seen this coming, but that did nothing to lessen her confusion.

There was an indignant sniffle from behind, and Mr. Endust arched his spine backwards before Wanda heard him speak. "Are you slouching?"

...She was. Hastily, the girl straightened her back as upright as it would go, thrusting her shoulders backwards to overcompensate. "Nooo."

"Riiight." The man snorted in wry amusement before continuing. "You can feel my back on yours, right?" Wanda nodded and, though he couldn't see the affirmation, he went on. "We have to keep the contact. The longer we go, the more you're going to want to relax. Don't. It's not good for your breathing or your focus. And your spine will grow that way."

Wanda could feel the hum of her father's voice through the cloth on their backs, tickling her own spine. A smile played at her lips but... she was still rather bewildered by the situation. "What're we gonna be doing for so long?" The mirror across the way was angled just enough for her to see her face, and nothing else. Wanda peered into it, studying her appearance. It wasn't often that she got to glimpse her reflection -- it was almost a kind of treat. Unfortunately, as she searched her image for any kind of distinguishing features, all she found was average-ness. Hazel eyes, the same round face most other girls seemed to have as well. Lips that were neither full nor thin and delicate. Really, the only thing she seemed to have going for her was an overabundance of blonde hair.

Besides that, she noted that the scene she was a part of right now would have been far less unusual if the mirror hadn't been there. Mr. Endust was prone to asking his daughter to do silly things with him without explanation, but the reflective glass was an indication that this wasn't his normal absurdity. It was out of the ordinary -- an indication that there may be a real underlying purpose here.
