Give and Take

The more she studied it, the more Annalisa Marin became convinced that Voiding was perhaps one of the most powerful forms of destructive magic. The ability to simply cast things into the darkness of the Void was intoxicating; to banish them from this dimension in a cleaner way that even reimancy could not approach. The tall sorceress was starting to view her reimancy as being a mere trifle by comparison, still rather powerful of course but nothing compared to the sheer destructive artistry that a Voider could work with. It was truly an art to someone like Anna, the ability to so easily destroy something or banish it from her sight.

The tall dark haired woman found herself in the Common Labs once again, in a cleared space that would allow for Voiding research unimpeded. Anna intended today to test the strength and reach of a Void Portal’s other assets, those abilities that truly made a Voider a force to be feared. The sorceress feared her own Void Portals on some small level due to the hallucinations that came with manifesting larger ones, they were minor annoyances but in the back of her mind the tall woman could not help but remember having brought something through to This Side.

Scattered upon the floor were various items; parchment, quills, inkwells, and a couple of chairs possessing the same items upon them as well. Today she wanted to see how fine-tuned her control over the attractive and repulsive forces on a Portal was, a dangerous project to be sure. Messing up could very well see her cast into the Void herself, a rather humiliating demise to be sure but the tall woman was confident it would not come to that. She just needed to explore her limits, to know how far she could logically go before needing to cut herself off.

Sighing slightly Anna held out her hand before her, her brow creasing slightly as she concentrated upon that wellspring of her being. She gripped hold of her Djed and focused it outwards towards a spot near her outstretched hand, a singular point. The tall woman willed that spot to empty of all matter, forcing it away with the force of her vital energy. At first nothing happened, though that was hardly surprising as Voiding was not an instantaneous discipline of magic. It required focus and patience to properly pull off, though that was true for most magics of the self.

After about ten ticks a tiny black pinprick sparked into existence, swirling and shifting in the air as a bridge between two dimensions. Anna felt the formation before she actually saw it, her Djed rushing from her body to assist the continued existence of the new born Portal. The sorceress started up a low chant under her breath as she focused on stabilizing the Portal, the incantations being used in order to keep a sharper focus upon the Portal itself. Some wizards scoffed at gestures and incantations, but Anna recognized them for the edge they presented to her.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

The Ancient Tongue words dripped from her lips softly as the tall sorceress kept her focus upon the Portal itself, her Djed steadily pouring out from her and into the tiny vortex she had birthed. Slowly but surely the influx of Djed was willed to increase and grow, to drain more from her but in doing so she signaled the tiny pinprick to expand. The initial spark shifted and grew, the borders of the Portal possessing a purple tint to them as a personalization of the Void Portal.

Pleasure tingled down her spine as the Portal grew and grew steadily before her, her Djed feeding the bridge between This Side and The Other Side. The casting euphoria was a normal thing when dealing in personal magic, considering her experience with Reimancy, Voiding was not nearly as tempting to push herself beyond the limits. Or as easy for that matter since when she neared her limits with Voiding it was much more easy to feel as opposed to Reimancy, where she was shooting a piece of her very being out from her body.

The shifting black vortex grew until it was about the size of the average man, a respectable size and one that showed she was making progress. With this size the hallucinations started to act up, nearly indistinguishable shapes seeming to shift and move in the darkness beyond, however Anna simply fell back on her incantations and focused on the Portal and her task. The shapes she was seeing were not real, they were figments of her imagination and a product of some bit of overgiving in regards to Voiding. So rather than dwell upon the hallucinations Anna focused on stabilizing and acclimatizing to holding open a Portal this large, feeding more of her Djed to the construct.

They were still there, dancing before her eyes and flickering as though they were actually there but just out of sight. The minor hallucinations always managed to put a little bit of irrational fear in her mind, a little distraction during the actual Voiding process. The tall sorceress crushed the emotion mercilessly as she focused intently upon the Portal and the cluttering of things upon the floor. They were irrelevant to her current objective of research, something which was far more important than any little hallucinations were.

So the first task was to see what a directional Pull could do and how narrow she could focus it upon objects, a seemingly simple objective but it held complications no doubt. Voiding was considered a dangerous discipline for a reason, if one entered into The Other Side then it was highly unlikely they would be returning to This Side anytime soon. Kouri had been an exception and even then she had brought back some form of undead creature with her, something that was likely supposed to have remained drifting in the Void. If she was not careful with her Pull then she could get sucked into her own Portal.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

Anna focused upon the Portal and poured an increased influx of her Djed into the Portal, signaling not a growth but rather the enforcing of a Pull upon the Portal. The next moment the parchment nearest to the Portal shifted off of the floor and vanished into the vortex, next was a quill that whizzed into the Portal. As the Pull increased to a slight degree more and more of the clutter on the floor moved towards the Portal, even the chairs shuddering slightly and screeching along the floor ponderously towards the gateway to The Other Side.

Teeth were grit through this process as the addition of a Pull upon an already rather large Portal increased the amount of drain upon her Djed by a rather large amount. The amount of Djed drained from a wizard during Voiding was dependent upon a number of factors Anna had noted, size of the Portal and the presence of a Push or Pull upon said Portal. Currently her Portal was at the maximum size for her control, adding a Pull to it was likely to result in faster burnout. Already she could feel the urge rising in her mind, pushing her ever onwards.

As the objects tumbled one by one into the Portal Anna could not help but notice there was a lack of real narrow control to it, the Pull being rather indiscriminant in the items it dragged into the Portal. Certainly it was given direction but other than that Anna observed that most items in its path were attracted towards it. The sorceress attempted to narrow the focus of the Pull but found it and exercise in futility, she just was not experienced enough the nature of Pull to narrow its focus.

That was something of a setback but as Anna willed the attractive force to drop she pondered if perhaps the same would hold true for a Push, perhaps it would be different. Honestly speaking she had only used Push to a limited degree, only once really when she had extracted Kouri and that monster from the depths of the blackness beyond the Void. So perhaps it could narrow its focus more easily than a Pull could, or could even return those items that were now drifting in the Void due to this experiment. It was worth experimenting to find out.

Anna gritted her teeth as she focused again, her face a mask of the purest concentration as more incantations dripped from her lips. She was rather fearful of actually utilizing Push with a Portal of this size given her previous experiences with unleashing something from the Void. She didn’t have Kouri here with her this time, what if she could not banish the creature again? There were also the hallucinations that attempted to trick her that there were things beyond the Portals, what if they ended up getting free or dragging her into the Void.

The sorceress curbed those self-defeating thoughts as soon as she could, there were many things that could happen in this life. She could step outside and be struck by lightning, die in another magical experiment, or be poisoned by a political opponent. If she continued to fear that which could possibly happen then she had no right to practice magic, the risk was worth the potential trade off in research. That was simply the way of things; to advance in her craft she needed to stop fearing the possibilities and instead allow herself to become enamored with the pay offs.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

Anna once again increased the influx of her Djed upon the Portal, feeding the hungry entity and attempting to create a repulsive Push upon the Portal. As soon as she did the opposite of what her Pull had created was brought into existence, the objects tumbling over themselves away from the Portal itself. Inkwells fell over, bleeding black upon the floor and the chairs screeched slowly away before falling backwards onto their sides. The repulsive force scattered the parchment into the air, whipping them up around the area and the quills were scattered with some skittering under workstations.

A wave of euphoric bliss washed over the tall woman, who felt rather god like at the very moment with the urge pounding in her skull. Djed was poured out of her and into the Portal to keep up this repulsive force, power rocking her body to the core. Sweat had formed upon her brow and her tongue felt rather dry all things considered. Her outstretched hand trembled slightly as the casting continued, the hallucinations also dancing before her eyes.

From the Void tumbled out some of the items Anna had banished there, quills now brittle and frozen to her eyes, parchment that seemed to have turned to ice. This only further served to reflect the dangers of the Void, one did not need to be Voided entirely to place their life into danger. Anna recalled having had her daughter stick a possessed slave’s hand into the Void, it had frozen after a few chimes on The Other Side. A dangerous thing though that danger only made it all the more appealing to the Sorceress, to master this was to gain a power few were likely to possess.

As before Anna attempted to narrow the focus of the Push, trying to only Push at specific objects on the ground but found a similar result as with Pull being found. It appeared that her skill and comfort with the ways of the Void was not enough to be able to utilize the forces to such a controlled degree, which was a pity. A shuddering sigh escaped the tall woman’s lips as she realized that this was likely as far as she was going to get in this particular experiment today.

The Sorceress cut off the Push upon the Portal and then willed the core of the Portal to fill with a bit of matter, triggering a collapse. The Portal vanished from existence, the air where it had existed rippling slightly before returning to normal. For her part Anna was both hungry and tired from the extensive casting, so after her shoulders slumped and she wiped the sweat from her brow the tall woman departed from the Common Labs. A good first trial on the matters of Push and Pull but she still had a long way to go.

Comments :
It amazes me how every Voiding Solo you do starts the same way and yet you manages to rephrase it, keep it different every time. I mean in essence what Anna is doing is the exact same and you reference the same ideas but the way she does it is ever so slightly different. It's very realistic and this is why I give you that one XP for your opening post every time. You prove every single time that opening a Portal isn't old hat. It's serious business to Anna and she is improving every time she does it so you deserve that XP. If you just rushed through your description there'd be no development there and frankly no cause for a Competent XP but you do it the right way. Please keep it up.

I have awarded your grade to the best of my ability. Of course I'm not infallible so if you have any comments or queries about your grade feel free to PM me.
