The Problem with Snares

The sun was starting to settle in the sky, turning it a pinkish orange hue that was slowly bleeding into a purple that would soon consume the sky in a blanket of night. Qali was already getting her things out of the large, locked, chest in her tent. She emptied a few non essentials from her backpack and began shoving her hunting equipment into it. The only things she couldn't fit was the cage and one of the snares. Once she'd shoved as much as she could into the bag she locked the chest back up, slipped the key into her bag and slung it across her back.

She was forgoing the coat tonight. It was a bit chilly when it got really dark, but she expected to spend most of the evening, after setting the traps, as an owl. Feathers were fantastic at keeping one warm after all. Once she set foot out of her tent she began weaving through the network of pathways between tents until she came to the outskirts of Tent City. She sighed softly and looked around. She had usual spots she could check for nests or signs of animals coming through often and set her snares in places she felt would grant the best catch chance. She continued on walking at she neared some old ruins from the old Sunberth. It was nothing special, some old foundations of an old house, she guessed. The walls were just about all that remained.

Once close she stepped in, careful to walk slowly and quietly, looking for signs of any nests hidden, or some small mammals hiding out. She lifted some clutter of trash and decaying limber to check for any eggs or anything. She sighed when there was nothing, not even some tracks she could readily spot. With that done she picked herself up and headed to the next decrepit looking remains of a building. As she went she kept her eyes peeled for the movement of small prey animals, and maybe for wild dogs, or wolves too. She readjusted her bag at the thought of a wolf and shuddered. The last thing she wanted to be was dinner for some hound. Even if she managed to shift fast enough, it was unlikely she could fly off before one snatched her up in their jaws. Certainly being eaten by wolves or dogs was not on her bucket list.

This skeletal remnent of a building had brush all around it, and in her experience would sometimes house small mice or rats trying to get away from wolves and whatever else pestered them at night. She began the delicate work of quietly checking through the grass, looking for baby animal, or better yet, eggs. There were few trees in the immediate area around Sunberth so the birds often nested in brush, the old buildings, or more commonly, the city itself. Qali always tried to check the outer rim of the city before she moved to checking out rafters for eggs.
