Debts Are Always Paid

35th Day of Spring, 514

Rayne could once more feel the cold air against his skin as he looked up at the clouded sky, the day was foggy once more, but he found it easier to see than the day before, maybe he was getting used to the weather slowly, whatever it was he wasn’t going to question it. He didn’t feel much like hanging around and not improving himself in some way. People weren’t going to help themselves. He found himself reminiscing back to his past as the cold wind blew past him. He was wearing another coat now, and it was certainly doing wonders protection him from the extreme cold that hung around Avanthal all year around.

Before coming here he didn’t even know this place existed, and now he was wandering around such an amazing place. There was one thing he always wondered, how could people survive in such an area? But then again looked at how well adapted they were, it really seemed like no surprise. They worked with the elements rather than trying to wait it out, or against it. Seeing people work with the ice and snow was certainly amazing, he found himself with an urge to help them out, but they seemed to be handling it well themselves, plus it would require him to use magic.

That simple statement was a big cause of his problems, he wanted to help others out, but he didn’t want to show them his magic. It was like being stuck between a rock and a hard-place, but he couldn’t get over his aversion of using the art in front of others, he was almost paranoid when it came to hiding it away. It was something he had learned from his father, after leaving Sunberth, people detested magic and by proxy wizards. He didn’t want to be disliked by others, nor did he want to hurt others, but he didn’t want to hide himself away either, these conflicting emotions caused him problems each and every day.

He wandered through some of the newly made paths, but his mind wasn’t on his journey allowing his feet to guide him, and that led to him bumping into someone. ”Sorry!” Was the first thing that left Rayne’s mouth; he looked up very slowly, he half-expected a furious person looking down at him. ”It’s no problem, relax a little. Accidents happen, I’m not mad or anything.” A rather tall middle-aged man was the person he had run into. He had black hair, and eyes that were blue...at the moment. He had an above average length nose, and a goatee.

Those words were all Rayne needed to calm down a little, his shoulders lowered a little, and the sigh of relief that left his mouth. ”That’s good to hear....” He was mildly surprised at how well the man could speak the common language, he hadn’t run into a lot of people here that could speak it this well. That might also be due to the fact that he has sort of been avoiding others, even if he wasn’t going to admit it to himself.

”That’s better, now I’m guessing your a little new here, I saw you wandering around for a good deal, and most of this was in a circle. Carry on with that and you might find yourself freezing.” The man’s tone was a little sterner than before, but he did seem to care which made Rayne feel better. ”I’ll keep that in mind sir, I’m sorry to bother you about this, is there any place close to sea or ocean near here? I’d like to hang around there for a little while before going inside.” His tone was quiet, and it did sound a little strained. The man held his chin as he thought of a good way to point Rayne. ”Hm, sure. Head for that direction, make sure not to take too many turns either, since everything’s covered in snow around here it can be a little tricky for people new to the city, you’ll get used to it if you choose to stick around.” He said as he pointed west.

Rayne looked over in the direction the man was pointing to. ”Ah, thank you very much, I’ll be on my way.” Rayne said with a smile. He continued on with his walk, the skin around his face was starting to hurt quite a bit. He needed to heat himself up, and he knew the trick to it too. This would be it for the day, and then he’d head back to his cottage to relax. That sounded like a plan, but he really needed to get out of his shell before he’d become known as a loner, it was a pretty sad sight.

He continued to move west, through the paths that were carved out by the wonderful people of the city, to the ones that were there before. Opening between buildings seemed to be covered in some areas, Rayne was sure he could help out in some way, shape or form. He found himself looking around to see if anyone was around. The place was still too busy, he preferred there to be no-one within the vicinity, although he did wonder how the people managed to melt the snow. The djed in the area did feel weird, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on it. Maybe magic users were more common here, but it didn’t feel like your usual Reimancy, so it had to be something else. He’d find out sooner or later. It wasn’t like he could leave here so easily.

He finally found himself approaching the ocean, it was a rather large expanse of ice cold water, the fog that hung over it made for a most amazing sight, with the sunlight trying to peak through. It made Rayne stand there for a few minutes trying to take in the sight. He took in a few deep breaths, a smile was once more on his face, and his lungs were filled with cold air driving away any lingering thoughts. For what he was about to do he needed nothing but his utmost concentration. He looked around the area to once more make sure that no-one was around.

Once he had checked for that he moved closer to the water, it was extremely hard to describe how cold Rayne was at the moment. He needed to warm himself up a little first, and he had a good idea for that. He took in a deep breath and allowed his mind to clear itself, he felt within his body for a small amount of Djed and led it out, transforming it into Res. It was a light yellow color, a rather thin liquid, it took time for it to seep out from his body, but after a few seconds it was there in a swirling ball of Res. He ignited it above his hand creating a rather large flame, about the size of a head of cabbage. It was only ignited from the outside, but the heat from it was more than enough to heat him up. He let it burn for a little while before extinguishing it. Sweat was already beginning to fall down the side of his face; it wasn’t easy to make a flame that size.

But he had bigger things in mind; it was time to get himself a level above what he usually did. At its current form his magic would cause too much harm to those he might have to go against, and he would like to avoid that as much as possible. With that thought in mind he took in another deep breath, liquid Res was beginning to flow out from the palms of his hands, a light yellow liquid that melded together from both of them. This would take some time; he had to concentrate carefully on this. He knew what he wanted; the final result was pictured in his mind, a clear image. He’d picked up this idea from the few days he had been here.

The ball of res was now the size of a watermelon, he didn’t want this blowing up in his face, and he’d allow it to grow after his final result had been achieved. He willed the outside of the ball to transform into the element he wanted it to. But it was a dud, all he got was flames. He needed to push it a little bit further. He tried once more, a look of pure concentration was on his face, the veins on the side of his head were bulging, the whites of his eyes were beginning to go red, but another dud was all he got, this time it became water. He wasn’t having any real luck with this one.

What was he doing wrong, he was trying to fuse the two elements, yet nothing was working out for him, he could only get one or the other. He had an idea, but did he have enough Djed to try it out? He could always find out. He filled more Res to flow out from his hands, and cover the ball of water; he was sweating even more, panting too. It was a huge strain on his body, especially since he’d been dealing with the cold weather. He willed it to move a couple of meters in front of him, but it took time. His hands were already shaking, and he was beginning to feel a little bit dizzy. Once the ball of res reached a good distance away, he allowed the outside to ignite into flames. What he got was what he pictured. A ball of steam, by allowing the water to be evaporated by the flames on the outer edge he finally reached what he aimed for, a good smoke screen to let him avoid conflicts that he might find himself dragged into, a peaceful solution that he’d aim for whenever he could.

His hands were shaking even more than before, beyond shaking even, small tremors. They were growing in magnitude. He couldn’t finish yet; there was more to do, more he could aim for with his newfound sub-element. Rayne allowed more res to flow from his skin slowly to join the steam ball, and within a few seconds it began to grow along with the tremors within his arms. It hurt, but why couldn’t he bring himself to stop? What was the feeling he was getting, even as his body was pouring with sweat he didn’t want to stop.

Suddenly! A breeze swept through the ocean side, the split second of distraction was all that was needed to make Rayne lose his loose concentration, and let go of the steam ball allowing it to flow into the city of Avanthal to join its fog brethren in clouding the sight of the aurora eyed children of Morwen. But it did something else too, the cold hit Rayne once more, it snapped him out of his delusions, the whispers that clouded his mind. His arms and legs were both shaking a lot, his head was hurting. Wave after wave, his headache began to grow; it was becoming hard to stand. But Rayne had to move, away from here at least. East, yeah this way had to be east. Each one of his steps were slow and wobbly, he reached a newly made walkway through the snow, and nearly ended up collapsing but caught himself on a wall; that was lucky. He was beginning to burn up, it hurt. ’why does it hurt so much’” Were the only thoughts that passed through Rayne’s head, his vision was wavy, his legs unstable and his head was hurting. He couldn’t think straight, nor could he understand what he had done, he pushed himself a little too far, and was now paying the price. Had the wind not hit him when it did he could have been paying with his very life at the moment, it was a lesson he would take to heart.
