OOCI discussed with Mirage whether or not a rope could be found in the Common Labs, he stated that yes though they were merely of average length. So she borrowed it from the labs.

Rental fee for two manacles from Cryptly- 4 GM's.

Screams and moans of misery echoed in the air around Annalisa Marin, the stench of despair and likely a few other things as well being prevalent in the Sahovan Dungeons. Grubby fingers reached out through the bars, grasping at the air as she passed by the cells though rather than simply ignore those she passed her grey eyes peered into each cell. The glint in her eyes was rather chilling, the sort of stare one might grant meat or fish in a market stall. She was searching for something indeed, a good test subject for today’s test that would require only minimal use of Master Cryptly’s hospitality.

Jiggling malevolently in her right hands were a pair of manacles she had rented from the Dungeon Master and slung over her shoulder was a coiled rope of average length from the Common Labs. Tucked under her left arm was a leather bound book, her book that she took notes in and in her left hand was an inkwell and brush. She was dressed rather plainly all told, tunic and trousers hanging lightly about her form and her sandals clacking slightly against her feet as she walked. Her thick black hair was pulled up into a high ponytail, bangs framing her face rather nicely. Upon her right ring finger was a silver ring, its sigil that of a burning scroll and was encrusted with rubies.

Cell after cell she passed, each occupant seemingly more miserable than the last and damaged in more creative ways. The sorceress took comfort in the fact that with her power she was more likely to be killed outright rather than brought here, Sahova was practical to a fault. This ground floor was mostly filled with humans she noted, the one below it had a number of non-humans that were worth a fair bit more all things considered. Humans were what she wanted for this trial anyway, one male, one female to test what she needed to test.

Finally she came to a cell tucked into a corner, two occupants shackled to adjacent walls and were both male and female. Both bore marks of torture upon their bodies that the shadows only barely obscured and were rather emaciated in appearance. They would service well enough for her purposes today, they both appeared far too weak to put up much off a fight in any event. Besides her research here on the ground floor was not exactly charged a fee, the upper and lower floors were though. Petching Dungeon Master made a killing.

The barred door swung wide, squealing loudly and drawing a vacant eyed stare from the woman while the man simply continued to mumble to himself with his head lowered. In swept the tall dark haired woman, her supplies being placed on the floor rather instantly and her shoulders being rolled as she no longer had to deal with the weight upon them. A low hiss of relief escaped her lips as she worked her arms around, not exactly being the most athletic person in the world. A low whimper escaped the female prisoner as she tried to shrink further away from the Wizard, who ignored the reaction and settled down against the bars. She licked her thumb as she opened her research journal, taking up her brush and starting to write in common.

Voiding Survivability: Trial #1
Date: 86th of Spring, 514 AV
Goal of Trial: Assess initial survival rate among humans within the Void, both male and female. One shall be exposed to the Void’s environment at 30 tick increment increases to get an accurate gauge for how long they can survive, or if humans can even breathe there. The second will be placed in for as long as it took for the other to expire, increasing by 30 tick increments as needed.
Presiding Wizard: Annalisa Marin
Assistants: None
Subjects of Interest: Male Human, relatively poor health.
Female Human, relatively poor health.

Anna then placed the writing supplies off to the side and stood slowly, moving to look over both test subjects. The female was the more aware of the two, possibly better to try her first and then the male to get it out of the way. There was some small part of her that was revolted at the idea of this kind of testing, but it was crushed for the need to know this information. There was very little she actually knew about what it was like to be within the Void, to better test that she needed to see if things could survive in the Void.

The sorceress slowly approached the prisoner, crouching before the pathetic looking woman and noting that she smelled as awful as she looked. Brown eyes closed and she looked away, trying to convince herself that the woman before her was not real. Anna frowned ever so, her lips down turning by fractions as she regarded the prisoner. If she attempted to unshackle her at the moment she’d probably try to run, so the tall woman needed to incapacitate her.

“Shhh… I am not going to hurt you, m’dear. Relax; I’m not like one of those shambling corpses.” Anna said, running a hand down the side of her face.

A flinch is what she earned in response, but the soft shushing noises seemed enough to encourage the woman to glance at Anna. A tiny smile formed on the Chaon’s lying mouth, her own finger lingering briefly on the prisoner’s chapped and cracked lips. Sadistic to perhaps play with the test subjects, but the sorceress could barely bring herself to care by this point. Oh certainly there was some tiny voice in the back of her mind stating how very wrong this was, but Sahova was quick to eat away at those sensibilities.

Tentatively the prisoner nuzzled into her warm hand, assuring herself that the woman before her was indeed human and not dead. The sorceress’ hand trailed down slow, from her cheek to her jaw and then her neck. From here Anna lightly trailed a thumb around the center of her throat, earning a slight whimper from the other woman. This time Anna could see the stump of her tongue, forcibly making her a mute. The grip tightened, before it was given all the tall woman’s strength with her other hand adding to it.

The prisoner’s eyes bulged and she tried to struggle and flail, but with her arms above her head and her body weak all she could do was kick ineffectually out and twitch. Anna’s face was blank as soon enough the breaths became less frequent and the prisoner’s struggles became even weaker before finally her eyes closed and consciousness fled from her body. The Chaon withdrew her hands, flexing them slightly as she settled on her next task on removing the shackles from the prisoner for the experiment.

Anna took the unconscious prisoner down from her shackles, recovering the manacles she had brought with her for today. She started with the feet, the iron shackles clasping around her ankles with a harrowing clink as the metal locked in place and the small chains rattled slight. Next came the hands, which Anna placed behind her back and locked the second pair of manacles into place. With this she was finished binding the prisoner, who laid belly flat and unconscious on the floor before her. Anna nodded after looking over her handiwork, turning to retrieve the rope.

Carelessly Anna planted a foot against the woman’s side and pushed her onto her back, the unconscious woman still not yet stirring. She uncoiled the length of rope and looped it around the prisoner’s neck, slowly tying a knot around her throat. Once she had the basic knot in place Anna pulled it tightly, the rope fitting snug in place around the prisoner’s neck. It was around this time when the prisoner began to stir, her eyes fluttering open slow and a muffled groan escaping her mouth. The sorceress paid no mind to the bound woman, stepping over her and striding to the wall she had once been stuck against.

The tall woman held out her hand before her, her grey eyes narrowing in concentration as she focused within herself at that wellspring of her being. She pulled at the strands of her Djed, willing part of herself to unravel at a singular point before her hand. Anna focused upon the concept of infinite emptiness and willed this energy to bring it into existence before her hand, her lips moving slowly in quiet incantations. The sorceress was focused entirely upon this objective, to call a Portal to the Void into existence as best she was able.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

Nothing happened at first naturally, it took about ten ticks of focus before she felt a rush of energy flow from her body into fueling something more. A tiny black pinprick of midnight formed before her hand, greedily suckling at her Djed as it was offered into the casting. Anna focused upon first stabilizing the newborn Portal, her incantations continuing to drip from her lips in the Ancient Tongue. As she stabilized the tiny bridge between This Side and The Other Side, Anna slowly started to increase the influx of Djed into the Portal.

Slow but surely the vortex grew and grew, the darkness reaching outwards as the borders of the Portal were more defined as being purple and shifting the light around it. She continued to make it grow, feeling a rush of elation and icy pleasure tingle down her spine that drew a slight smile from her. The tall woman also started to see the hallucinations as the Portal became large enough to absorb a human being. Shapes danced outside of her vision, flickering in the darkness beyond and teasing at her senses even though she knew they were not real the tall sorceress felt a slight thrill of fear shoot through her mind.

Once the Portal reached its maximum size Anna simply cut off the flow of her Djed to the Portal, letting it exist on its own for a bit. The Portals could remain open a while longer on their own, besides it would be unwise to split her focus for this next part. Her grey eyes looked behind her where the prisoner was attempting to sit up slowly, though it was awkward with her limbs bound as they were. The tall woman raised an eyebrow as she walked back over to the woman, hand upon her hip.

Anna pushed her back down flat on her back with her foot, which she kept planted on her chest as she gripped the length of the rope and tugged experimentally. The prisoner gazed up at her pleadingly, a series of unintelligible whimpers escaping her lips which the sorceress attempted to ignore. She slowly ground her foot into the other woman, pressing as hard as she could to elicit a gasp of pain from the mute prisoner’s lips.

“If you just accept this, trust me it will be easier on you. If you make my job difficult I’ll be very certain to drag this out as long as I possibly can.” Anna offered, her tone smooth like honey and earning another whimper from the prisoner.

Anna forced her to her feet, her grip upon the rope firm as was her grip upon the woman’s shoulder as the prisoner was brought to her feet. It wasn’t until she was faced with the Portal still large enough to absorb her that the screaming started, loud and fearful as she attempted to dig her heels in to stop herself. The sorceress could see the hallucinations beyond, shifting and looking rather like there was something beyond. However she kept to herself and pushed the screaming mute woman forward towards the slowly shrinking Portal.

Finally once they were close enough Anna just gave the prisoner a shove and her screams were abruptly cut off from the cell as she vanished into the inky black Portal. The sorceress gripped the rope tightly, feeling little movements along the rope as the other woman struggled in the Void. Her connection to the Portal was reestablished, grey eyes focusing in concentration as she fed more Djed into the casting. She started counting up from one, knowing that once she hit thirty ticks she would pull the woman back out from The Other Side.

As she did the sorceress willed a light Pull to act upon the Portal, increasing the influx of Djed to a greater degree. It was not enough to Pull Anna herself towards it, but the attractive force did play at her clothing and hair. It also served to Pull her test subject deeper into the Void, making escape of her own ability rather difficult all things considered. The sorceress gritted her teeth at the increased force acting to drain her ever more. She could handle it, she could control it.

Anna had taken up her incantations once again, the words in common this time as she counted out the time audibly that the prisoner remained on The Other Side. She willed the Portal to shrink slightly to about half its size in order to cut back on the drain affecting her Djed. She could still feel the struggling along the rope as she continued to keep the casting up, no doubt the environment of the Void was hardly a fun place to be for the prisoner. The tall dark haired woman merely ignored the stunted morals screaming at her how wrong this was, continuing the experiment.

As her count approached thirty Anna slow started pulling back upon the rope and feeding the hungry Void Portal an increased influx of Djed. The vortex grew as the woman on The Other Side was dragged back toward This Side, the process slow but steady enough. The sorceress was curious to see what the initial results would be and the effects the Void held upon the human body. It was a sick sense of curiosity really, but such were the things that were fostered upon Sahova sadly enough. Research of any type that could teach one more about magic, was considered worth the cost of life.

As she pulled the woman back, Anna switched the force acting upon the Portal to enforce a Push upon it. This sped up the extraction a fair bit, though it ran the risk of possibly unleashing something within the Void back into This Side. The hallucinations dancing before her eyes were proof of that, though they were not real they were certainly warning of what very well could happen. The sorceress shuddered slightly at the thought, a thrill of fear running down her spine.

The prisoner entered back into This Side with a loud gasp for the air that existed in the cell, her chest heaving as she drank it in large greedy gulps. She was immobile on the floor, obviously far too weak to do anything at the moment. Anna released her connection to the Portal yet again, this time also cutting off the repulsive force existing in the Portal, kneeling down next to the weakened woman and feeling at her skin. The prisoner’s flesh was cold to the touch, like ice really and moving her hand over her heart showed that it was racing erratically to pump blood through the woman’s body.

Obviously judging from the gasps of breath Anna could deduce that there had likely been no air in the Void along with it being cold. Thirty ticks had not been enough to kill the woman though, so there was at least that in her favor should she end up on The Other Side for a short period. However now that she knew it did not kill the woman and the basic facts about what the Void was like for living creatures, it was time to see what the upper ceiling for human female survivability was.

Anna allowed the prisoner a few more ticks to get her precious air, before roughly forcing the weakened human to her feet and shoving her back in to the Void Portal. A ragged scream was cut off once again; rather chilling in how very quickly it had been cut off. Anna held the rope firmly and seized control of the Portal once again, willing the Vortex to shrink to half the size once again to reduce the drain upon her and to banish the hallucinations from her eyes. Pull was again enforced upon the Portal, the attractive force lightly tugging at the tall woman as she worked the weaves of her magic.

The Djed flowed out from her in a steady stream, fuelling the connection between two different dimensions. Pleasure coursed its way down the tall woman’s spine, the ease in which she had banished the prisoner into nothingness made her feel so very powerful. It was where all her enemies and the enemies of Rhysol belonged, to drift forever in eternal nothingness with no one to know their fate in the end. The casting euphoria was something a wizard quickly got used to, fortunately Voiding was hardly as draining or likely to make one overgive as Reimancy.

Deadly Dark Frost

After she was getting close to a full chime of having the prisoner in the Void, Anna started willing the Portal to increase in size once again. The struggling along the rope had gotten progressively weaker and as the sorceress started pulling the prisoner back to This Side she noted that it had stopped all together. The sorceress wondered if a single chime was all it had taken to make the other woman expire while being in The Other Side. She had been quite weak so that would somehow not surprise Anna very much, but it did not bode well for her if she accidently ended up getting Voided.

As before Anna enforced a Push upon the Portal, the repulsive force aiding in the speed in which she extracted the woman. The force was even more draining upon the tall woman, adding to the Djed necessary to keep the Portal open and stable. The sorceress suspected that leaving it upon the Portal also increased its rate of decay, though that was something she had yet to test. Something for the future perhaps, at some point when this experiment was finished.

The dirty and emaciated woman was drawn back to This Side, her eyes closed and her hair brittle to the touch. Her flesh was a pale and very much cold as Anna released control of her Portal and cut off the Push to kneel beside the woman, touching at her body. Her hand went to be placed over her heart to find that it had slowed considerably, though her lungs were now forcing air into her lungs at the woman awoke from her unconsciousness fairly sluggishly. The tall woman sighed as she helped the weak woman to her feet once again, still not dead yet it appeared.

A weak whimper escaped the half dead woman’s throat, almost as if she was begging even with the last thread of her being to the Chaon not to be sent back to The Other Side. It stabbed at her slightly and Anna clenched her jaw as the human part of herself accused her of reducing another human being to this, that she was a monster for ignoring these pleas for mercy. Perhaps that part of herself was right, she had done monstrous things upon Sahova, murder, torture, betrayal. It was all in the name and worship of Rhysol, he who she served without question.

The sorceress crushed her feelings of humanity and pushed the other woman to The Other Side, swallowing the lump attempting to form in her throat. She was not a weakling; she was as willing to sacrifice as the other Sahovan Wizards within the Citadel. Anna hated what Sahova had turned her into, what it had done to her in not even a year upon the island. The sorceress wanted to scream out her pain to the heavens above, but that would display weakness she could not show.

So instead Anna reestablished her connection to the Portal to The Other Side and willed it to reduce in size once again, the stream of her Djed flowing back into the Portal to stabilize it. Pull was once again enforced upon the Portal, her long dark hair seeming to flow towards it as though held by an intangible breeze. Her tunic fluttered about her body lightly, the rope pulled along by the force but held fast by Anna herself. The dark haired woman allowed the casting euphoria to wash away her feelings of discontent, concentrating on counting up to one chime and thirty ticks. The hallucinations were sporadic things fortunately, only appearing to taunt her when she was casting a Portal large enough to absorb a person.

As Anna reached the appointed time the drain upon her Djed became more and more noticeable, not nearing the dangerous territory of overgiving but enough to take a bit of energy out of her. The tall woman gritted her teeth as her mind willed her to keep casting beyond the time, to create a Portal large enough to consume all of Sahova with its power. She pushed aside these thoughts as she kept concentration through her counting up the desired time, the time when she would see how very difficult it was to survive within the Void.

The time approached and so Anna fed the Portal a steady influx of Djed to will it to grow slowly once more, the construct sapping at her greedily and hungrily. The sorceress slowly started to pull the rope back, the woman’s struggles long having ceased on The Other Side. Pull was replaced with Push and the direction of her hair and clothing moving moved in the opposite direction. The prisoner emerged from the Portal, which prompted Anna to drop her connection to the Portal once again, cutting off the Push, and stoop to the woman’s side. The sight was not exactly what Anna would have called pretty.

A quick check to the woman’s heart showed that it had indeed stopped, her flesh icy cold to the touch and a layer of frost seeming to form over her frozen and damaged body. Anna noted then that it took one chime and thirty ticks to kill a human female, recording it mentally for her notes as soon as she was finished with her second Test Subject. A sigh escaped the sorceress’ lips as she stood, the test subject now very much deceased.

Her hands moved quickly to remove the shackles from around the dead woman’s wrists and ankles, placing the cold metal restraints off to the side. Next came the rope, which was a slightly brittle from the exposure to the Void, making it a little difficult to remove. Once it was off Anna sighed and placed it with the manacles, turning her attention to cleaning up her mess to make room for the next trial. The sorceress took control of the Portal once more, willing the slowly shrinking this to expand to the maximum size she could make it.

The hallucinations danced before her eyes, the intangible shapes beyond seeming to tease at her and threaten her even though they were not real. Anna dragged the corpse up and then pushed it into the Void Portal, the prisoner vanishing into the darkness for the very last time. This accomplished Anna flicked her grey eyes towards the other cell occupant, the man who was still muttering to himself incoherent under his breath. It seemed to Anna that it was time for test number two…

Anna hummed softly as she tied the rope firmly around the man’s neck, the shrinking Portal out of the corner of her eye distracting her slightly. The other prisoner had not put up much of a fight to Anna honestly, almost rather like he had expected this and was welcoming it. Considering the horrors of the Sahovan Dungeon it would not exactly have surprised the tall woman. She finished binding the man, stepping back and examining him for a moment before nodding and stepping back to the Portal itself to tend to it.

She reestablished control of the Portal, which had shrunk to the size of her open hand in the time since she had abandoned it to bind her second subject. Anna slowly fed the Portal an influx of her Djed, willing the vortex to expand steadily to her direction and whim. The bridge between This Side and The Other Side expanded slowly, reaching out to the air surrounding it hungrily in an attempt to consume This Side into The Other. Anna felt magnificent, a living goddess compared to those around her who wielded the power of another dimension entirely at her beck and call.

She pushed aside her urges and instead, comfortable the Portal was stable enough for the moment, dropped her connection briefly enough to force the Test Subject to his feet. The man was forced towards the Portal, shoved inside by the woman a full head taller than he. He vanished into the inky blackness beyond, her hands gripping the rope and her will seizing control of the Portal once again as she willed the Portal to shrink to about half its current size once more. From here Anna counted up to one chime and thirty ticks, the time it had taken the woman to expire.

Pull was again enforced upon the black Vortex, the swirling darkness seeming to move a little more violently. Her hair and clothing were tugged at lightly and the tall woman could feel the Portal trying to lightly Pull her towards it. The force was hardly the most forceful thing ever, so Anna easily resisted it. Still it was a constant thing, further adding to the increasing strain upon her Djed.

The sorceress could feel the soothing euphoria over her mind, sweat beading upon her brow the more she continued this casting. Exhaustion from extended casting was starting to become apparent in her heavy breaths, her lungs drinking in the air around her much like the first prisoner had. Voiding was not as tiring as Reimancy perhaps, but it was still very much a personal magic. It still drained at her being and soul, requiring that she sacrifice herself to fuel the casting for extended periods of time.

As she approached the desired time Anna slowly willed another increased influx of Djed to act upon the Portal, willing it to expand slowly. As it did so she started pulling on the rope to bring the man back to This Side. The Pull was willed to be replaced with a Push, the woman feeling as though the Portal wanted to force her back a step as she used the force to aid in the extraction. The dark haired woman felt another sharp wave of euphoria wash over her as she brought the prisoner back, resisting the urges in her mind whispering to her. Soon enough the test subject was brought tumbling back to This Side, prompting Anna to drop her connection to the Portal, cut off the Push acting upon it, and kneel beside the man.

His heart was no longer beating, his flesh was covered in a frosty substance and his eyes were staring forever ahead. The pair of prisoners had not exactly been average examples of humanity but from what she could tell from them, one chime and thirty ticks was when it began to reach truly deadly. So human survivability was rather limited in the Void, this much was obvious but Anna had to wonder if other things could survive for a bit longer.

In any event she removed the bindings around the corpse, reaching out and expanding the Portal once again to its maximum size for her to control. From here she shoved the fresh, half frozen corpse into the Void and closed the Portal with a wave of her hand and a filling of the core with matter. The black vortex collapsed almost instantly, the air it had occupied seeming to ripple slightly before returning to normal. No evidence of the two prisoners ever having existed remained, their corpses now banished to drift in the Void. Anna slowly made her way to her journal, starting to fill the pages with her discoveries.

-Human Female Test Subject showed signs of a temperature decrease across her body after initial exposure. Her heavy breathing indicated a lack of air within the Void. This suggests that it is indeed utterly empty.
-Human Female Test Subject was rendered unconscious after about a chime in the Void, though clung to life enough that she lived once brought back to This Side. I can therefore postulate that a chime within the Void is within what I shall dub ‘the safe zone’.
-Human Female Test Subject expired after one chime and thirty ticks within the Void. Her body was rendered in a semi-frozen state. Above one chime one exits ‘the safe zone’ as initial test suggests. Body disposed of in the Void.
-Human Male Test Subject expired at one chime and thirty ticks, just as the female. This reinforces that around one chime and thirty ticks tends to be rather deadly.

Conclusions Drawn: The Void boasts and incredibly cold environment, one bereft of air itself to allow one to breathe. Human survivability in the Void is very limited, with weaker specimens not lasting one chime and thirty ticks. It is possible that stronger and better fed specimens might last longer, though that is mere speculation at this phase. I must say, as a personal note, that it is truly frightening to think of what could very well survive within such a hostile environment. Having encountered one such creature myself, I do not wish another encounter.

Things to keep in mind going forward: This trial was simply with humans, it is possible some non-humans might boast a longer survival time within the Void. I wonder, if one is trapped within the Void, could it be possible to open a Portal to Mizahar from within it? A subject for future study no doubt, for now I believe that the next trial will need to involve healthier test subjects as well as non-human ones.

Her task of recording completed Anna gathered her things together and departed from the cell, intent on delivering the items to their rightful place before getting some much needed rest. With one discovery with the Void many more questions were created by it, ones that brought into question just how much she really knew regarding the Void. Anna sighed; more answers only ever bred more questions. Perhaps Maelstrom was not quite so mad as most thought him.
