Alaia was curled up in the chair before her desk; her feet perched on the edge of the seat with her knees to her chest as she brushed her comb through long gilded tresses. Her chin rested comfortably between the bumps of her knees as she let her mind wander. The nights were always long to the young Konti, endless it seemed and tonight wasn’t any different. She could hear the tide ebbing and flowing with the cool breeze that lazily fell through her window; she just wanted to be outside with her feet in the water looking up at the stars. Unfortunately it was bed time according to her mother and she knew her sisters were long asleep by the silence that radiated through their family home. Having four sisters didn’t exactly lead to a quiet life, being the youngest in most houses usually would mean the loudest and also the first to bed – in Alaia’s family it was different, she was the quietest and always the last to sleep and first to wake.

Leth’s light cast a silver glow upon her room illuminating the plain white decorations and making her neatly folded sheets almost seem like a welcoming cloud. The brush slid through her hair with ease after several strokes to calm the abuse of the windswept waves after a day outside. The chimes past and the young girl remained in her trance-like state letting her mind calm and her senses dull until she finally uncurled from the chair and placed down her brush. Standing her white nightgown shifted and fell to her ankles, the cotton breathing in the cool night air. With a few steps she crossed the room and slid under her fresh sheets and letting her long hair spill across the pillows, pulling the blankets up to her chin she closed her eyes and let out a slow breath. She practiced this slow breathing for only a few chimes before her mind began to feel heavy and without even realizing she was pulled into the depths of her dreams.

One moment she could feel the cool pillow against her cheek and almost taste the sea in the air and then her world was blazing hot and she couldn’t smell the ocean anymore or feel her pillow….

Sweat beaded on her brow as the familiar sounds of the jungle chased her through thick under brush, her feet pressed into the moist dirt and decomposing leaves while her heart pounded evenly in her chest. Thrill bled through her veins like poison and she felt her mouth curl into a predatory smile, lips sticking to her gums briefly in the process. She was thirsty, thirsty for water but she was also thirsty for the meal that was dashing through the forest in leaps and bounds. Her prey was clumsy as it ran, its fear staining the forest like a brand calling out to every predator in the general area.

A floating bird call echoed through the sunbathed leaves and her own throat vibrated a snarling response that mimicked a growl from their revered tigers. They were herding the prey and closing in fast, she could hear the others now and she felt her hand grip at the spear as if it were simply an extension of her powerful arm. Her mouth watered and her feet pushed harder into the ground vaulting her over a fallen trunk and that’s when she spotted him, he was beautiful. The fear in his eyes as he glanced back at her galloping body was delicious and she raised her arm ready to throw the spear into him while the others circled around the other side of him just in case she missed….She didn’t plan on missing.

His large eyes filled her vision like black discs and just before her weapon pierced him the scene gave way to another …

Night Dreams and Lost Memories: Part 1

The fresh and abundant killing field lay before them. His fangs were sated and the heavy foam lining his lips from his exertion dropped in a great pink globs. It was the way of Myrians to extinguish competitors, there was no mercy. The same held true for their great mounts; the tigers.

Powerful muscles stripped in orange and black padded through the carnage. Looking for her, his true north. There was no Taloba and no Myri without the fierce warrior he bore into battle. There would be food aplenty for the Myrians and tigers alike this night. In victory their ferocity could only grow.

Around the treetops even the birds were silent, death did that. Soon the carrion feeders would arrive but not until it was well and truly safe. He shifted to the robust tawny form more like the Myrians who scoured the still bleeding battlefield, providing death to those who still struggled on Dira’s doorstep. Walking through the bramble and sanguine infused mud, he finally found her.

In every way her appeared Myrian, but for those eyes. Eyes that glowed the meaning of predator and prey. His muscles coiled and he leapt, when he reached the mud once more it was on great furry paws once again. He ran his head against her thigh smearing death’s concoction against her skin.

The first Carrion bird swooped near them and the tiger pounced. It was a quick thing to snap the birds neck for the monstrous tiger. He swung the avian to and fro until all movement ceased and then trotted back with his prize.

The shifting images swirled and changed in her dream and when they cleared she was standing in the center of a muddy forest and listening to the silence that surrounded her. Her head was tilted back and her dark face angled towards the rays of Syna that shone bright through the forest leaves. He was near, she knew it and a smile pulled across her teeth. At her feet lay a small dead nandhai and her spear was coated in blood. There was the distant sound of paws hitting earth and the sound of birds squawking in alarm, she could only imagine it was her tiger setting them to worry. Soon her wonder was answered as the fur of a large tiger rubbed against her leg and caked her bare thigh in the blood of his kill. “Ah… my love ...” Her voice was rough, thick and deep with the hunt and the pull the kelvic beside her triggered in her heart.

The first birds appeared, swooping and calling to each other in warning at the thread on their doorsteps and her tiger was gone again, this time leaping and silencing one of them forever as they gathered food for the family. When he returned to her with the kill the tall Myrian woman knelt and gently took the bird from his jaws to place it beside the nandhai she had killed. Running rough hands through his dirty fur she smiled at him, proud of the power her mate displayed. “A few more of these or one more nandhai and we can have a feast.”

She leaned in close and pressed her lips to his forehead before she stood again. “Come, the others have already captured one of the other nandhai … there should be one more if the tracks were right and don’t you want to show them who the better hunting pair is?” Her eyes glittered with the desire to be better than the other hunters and she called out with a series of throaty sounds to indicate that they had kills to be carried back for the members of the hunting group who weren’t in the killing party.

Nitya grasped the back of her tiger’s neck and gave it a quick squeeze of affection before she swung herself up onto his back in a well-practiced movement. Her thighs gripped his muscled back and she leaned low to decrease wind resistance so that she could move with him rather than against him. “North, we should be able to pick up the trail just beyond the clearing.” It wasn’t like a horse, she didn’t have to urge him she just had to hold on and let their bodies move as one. She couldn’t have asked for a better hunting partner or kelvic to bond to.

Night Dreams and Lost Memories: Part 1

Pukk’s muscles coiled. He was no horse to carry her on a long journey, but into battle there was no finer partner. He would gladly carry her until his paws gave out beneath him and still she would be no burden if it made her happy in the end. He sprang forward adjusting to the new weight as they had done in the past. He kept their path straight, bounding around trees only when necessary not only did that slow him down but it was not as easy for her to stay seated.

He needn’t hunt by scent, this query fled blind through their home leaving tracks clear to any native. Broken branches and leaves, prints in the soft loamy soil, the absence of birds screaming in the treetops. The hunt was on and the quarry was sure as head.

The wind screamed past his ears, branches slapped his shoulders. The air finally brought the fear, sweat, and … blood to his predator's nose. He took a hard left and brought them before a clearing a small muddy pool of water. Pukk drew up sideways cornering the pathetic barbarian against the pool. Like thunder crashing and metal straining to bend, he roared.

Ntiya had her prey…

The forest melted away to a white beach. Eselle, a rosebud of a girl with only the hint that she might bloom into a woman, strode forward with her shimmering sword gripped beneath her palms. The enemy was some sort of amorphous blackness that spoke with a sailor’s disjointed accent.

“You won’t steal Mura’s treasures this time pirate king!” she squealed in triumph. She slashed and she screamed and she didn’t cry. Eselle was the hero not the victim. The fog rolled back in on itself, smaller and smaller until it coiled down into nearly nothing. Eselle spun in triumph away from the defeated villain. She always won.

Unbeknownst to her, behind Eselle’s back the miasma was not to defeated. It began to send out slow oily tendrils along the uneven sand. She cheered and announced her own praises to the lack of audience.
