Day 43, Summer, 514 AV
~21st Bell

The poison of Heldrog had apparently gone very well, or so her mystery customer had told her earlier within the day. They had spoken within the Pig’s Foot tavern, just as the sun crept low over the horizon before disappearing, giving away to the god of the moon. Indeed, they both shared a mug of ale as their dark hooded figures could be seen conversing in the corner of the tavern. The male, who did not give a name and she did not ask, described how the rival thief had been felled by the poison. In truth, she wasn’t very interested in the details of how a person was felled, for there was many different ways that a person could die, she was just interested in the business that he brought about for her profession. After she had finished her mug of ale and he had boasted for a good bell, he finally got around to the reason why he had wanted to meet. He wanted a poison that would make one feel sick and possibly weak, enough that one might choke on their own vomit. So once mizas were exchanged, she had left, the Dhani no longer needed to linger inside of a tavern when she could be making a poison. Indeed, she preferred her work over social interactions. Well, she did enjoy some social interactions, but useless talk annoyed her to some extent.

So once she was sure that she hadn’t been followed, she returned back to her room at the Sunset Quarters, closing and locking the door behind her. Silently, one by one, she would pull off her black gloves, setting them upon her bed as she also pulled off her coat, folding it to also place upon the bed. She had a particular herb that was of use in this instance, it was fairly basic however but she did not mind too much. Any poison-crafting that she could do was a blessing, for it kept her idle hands busy and besides, crafting poisons was her expertise. As a smirk fell into place upon her lips, she would slip on an apron and a pair of gloves that she specifically used for poison-crafting, one could never be too careful when it came to poisonous plants and the one that she did have in mind, was very poisonous. For every part of the plant could be used for poisons, however, she was only going to use one part of the plant and that was the berries of the Bunwol plant.

Shadiss would pull out the container of which held the berries within and she took a moment to take a breath before she set about doing a task that was beginning to grow familiar to the woman. However, upon this day, she decided that she would use the retort. For she wanted to see if using the coil would help bring the best out in her poisons, whether it would make a poisonous plant’s properties even more poisonous. The woman would also gather up her ceramic mortar and pestle, settling it upon the desk as she opened the container that contained the berries and gently rolled them into the mortar. She would set aside the now empty container and grasped the pestle in her right hand, setting about grinding the berries. She had to be careful with berries for they were very juicy and could easily squirt everywhere when pressure was applied, so she had to do this process very slowly and very carefully so then she could use every drop that the berries provided.

Shadiss very gently pressed the ceramic pestle against the berries, slowly applying pressure to them so then they would split without squirting their juices everywhere. Once she was sure that they had all split and that she wouldn’t be at risk of the precious juices spraying everywhere upon her work area, she would speed up the grinding process. Although the berries were mostly juicy, she also wanted to make sure that the fleshy parts of the berries were also grinded down so then she was using every single part of the poisonous Bunwol berries. Waste not, want not was how it went, especially when it came to poisons. The young Dhani knew very well that every bit helped to make the poison that much more potent and she pressed the pestle against the bowl of the mortar. This essentially grinding the two together with the fleshy parts of the berry caught in between to be grinded into smaller pieces, a process that was repeated. This was a process that relaxed her and the tension from the meeting with her client slowly ebbed away, leaving her muscles relaxed as she focused solely upon the task at hand. Really, the starting process of poison making was almost therapeutic for the poisoner and it was probably why she had started a profession within poisons anyway.

The moment that she deemed the berries grinded as much as possible, she gently tapped the pestle on the edge of the mortar so then whatever drops of the poisonous Bunwol berry would fall from the pestle and into the bowl of the mortar. Finally she would set the pestle upon the desk and grasped the small bottle of clear solution. The poisoner didn’t think that she would need much of this, for the berries were mostly juicy as they were. So, she only added a simple drop of solution into the mortar, setting aside the bottle and waited. Patience was something that was needed within this profession, or so she had found out. Patience was also needed for when one dealt with chatty clients and this client was particular chatty, lucky for her however, she never brought clients back with her, it was a rule of hers. Her crimson gaze peered into the mortar for a moment, biting down upon her bottom lip before she decided that the solution that she placed within it had had enough time to dissolve the fleshy bits of the berry.

Finally, she transferred the berry fluid into a small vial and placed a cork into the top so then it would be secure, sliding the vial into the rack of a centrifuge. This was a fairly simple mechanical device that made the life of a poisoner easier and she began to crank the wooden handle that was attached to this device. The wooden handle then making the rack that the vial she had placed into it, spin. The rack spinning around and around, separating a thinner layer from the thicker layer, the thicker layer being heavier than the lighter, being pushed down to the bottom of the vial as the centrifuge spun it, the lighter layer slowly coming to the surface. Finally, she stopped cranking the handle and eagerly popped the top of the vial, grasping her trusty eye dropped to push into the vial and squeeze up the thinner layer of the fluid. The thin layer of the fluid wasn’t very potent anyway, so she had no qualms about gathering it up and setting it aside. Before she would empty the fluid from the vial, the woman added a stabilizer to it and rolled back onto her heels with a smirk crossing her lips. Now she would begin to use the retort.

Her pale fingers grasped a hold of the retort, it was a glass alembic made of a single piece of glass. It was spherical in shape with a long neck starting at the top of the spherical shape, before angling downwards. This neck would grow skinny so then the distilled liquid could easily slide into a vial or a dish. She gently placed this retort down upon the desk as she grasped the vial and pulled out the cork at the top of the spherical retort so then she could pour the fluid into the spherical bulb of the retort. Once she had done this, she placed the cork back into the top of the retort and set about turning a heat on. In theory, this would make the poison much more potent, there-fore the poison created should last for up to ten to twelve bells depending on whether the full amount would be induced. Lifting a hand over the heat, she nodded her head and moved the retort over the heat, placing a dish at the end of the retort. She wasn’t exactly sure how long this process would take, it was the first time that she had decided to use a retort rather than just simply heating the fluid inside of a dish.

Lowering her gaze, she waited for the heat to heat up the glass retort, something that required patience upon her part and so she would straighten up, a sigh upon her lips. Shadiss had gotten into the poison profession, mostly because it was a craft that needed to be practiced in secret; she enjoyed the quiet and solitude that came with it. The whole process helped her to relax and kept her mind busy with the many probable ways of making poisons. Sometimes, she swore that she even dreamed about the poison making process, she lived and she breathed poisons, it was her obsession. Without it, she would become lost and confused, it was the purpose she was born to do and she believed that it was the reason why she survived when her brothers and sisters did not. Finally, after many chimes, the retort would begin to grow hot and it began to boil the fluid within it. With an excited eagerness, she clapped her gloved hands together, rubbing them as she watched the steam rise from the boiling fluid, drifting upwards in the spherical bulb to the top where it would catch and appear to stick to the top of the glass, liquefying.

This liquid would then slid down along the neck of the retort, before dripping into the dish that had been propped underneath the opening of the neck. A smirk fell into place upon her lips, a malicious excitement glimmering within her hues as she simply watched the process. It took quite a few bells for all of the fluid that she had grinded up, to boil and become vapours, which was caught at the top of the bulb, only to turn back into liquid form and slide down the neck to drip into the dish underneath the opening of the neck. Making sure that the heat was extinguished, she gently pulled the dish out from underneath the opening of the neck and her crimson gaze gleamed, the smirk widening upon her lips as the berry juice appeared to be a more liquid form rather than a natural syrupy form of juice. The experiment had been a success and she was confident that this poison would be more potent and that the effects would last at least ten bells. With a small chuckle, she would carefully pour this liquid into a vial, placing a cork into the top of it so then to keep it inside the vial. Oh yes, she very, VERY pleased with the outcome.
