Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Day 40, Summer, 514 AV

Lynx pushed through the door to the Valkalah Library, a place which was quickly becoming like a second home to her, seeing as she did spend quite a bit of time here for her job and reading. She did indeed liked to enjoy reading the many books that there was within the library, provided that she didn’t take any of them out. Which was probably why she spent so much time within their walls, however ever since buying a pair of puppies, she couldn’t spend a great deal of time within these walls, for she wanted to spend as much time as she could with the little puppies. They were important to her, the only companions that she really had to keep her company, to keep her from talking to herself. Well, she talked, just mostly to Leth, occasionally she would tell something to herself of which should have been obvious in the first place, something that the woman already knew but had mistakenly forgotten about it till after something had been done. A habit that she had picked up pretty easily, or so she had noticed, whether it was a habit that she used to have in her previous life was the question.

She lifted a hand to wave at Zandar and Kvanth and a firm nod was given in regards to her presence there in the library. She always addressed the both of them, for she never knew which one was present at the time. Rarely did they exchange words, most of the time, their relationship was a nod and a wave. Akalaks made Lynx nervous at times, but this was one Akalak was one that she did not mind at all. Perhaps it was because of the fact that they rarely talked or because they shared the same passion of books and the need to preserve their words, so then others may set eyes upon them and learn about their important message. Whatever the reason, they had a fairly simple relationship and it was easy enough for the ethaefal. However, she had come into the library upon this day in order to finish copying the book that she had started on the 25th, the day that she had met the other Akalak, in fact now that she thought about, she had neglected to get his name. With a shrug of her shoulders, she went to the back room in order to gather the materials in order to continue on what she had been working on. She had done more copying of the book since that day, but due to only being a novice, it was a slow process and she tired fairly easily. Once she had the materials she needed, the vellum she had copied on so far, a sheet of paper, spare sheets of vellum, a vial of ink, a quill with its nib already cut and ready for use, a pen knife, a drawing board and most of all the book that she was copying. ‘Wysar and Akajia: An Introduction to Riverfall's Gods.’

The book was indeed very fragile and it was handled with care as she collected and brought her gathered items to a desk seated by a window. It was so then light could stream in over her left shoulder and onto her work space, lighting it up so then she could properly see what she was doing. She would hinge the drawing board to the edge of the desk to gain a sloped surface. It was then where she gently placed the book to the left of the drawing board, setting her writing tools to the right of the board. Finally, she placed the blank sheets of vellum upon the drawing board, setting the sheets that she had already copied onto, aside, making sure to keep them in the order that she had copied onto them. She then grasped the sheet of paper and folded it lengthwise and placed it, with a fold across the top, across the sheet of vellum about one inch below the writing line. The corner of the guard was then extended at each side and pinned to the drawing board. Finally, she would then move to seat herself down upon the chair and set about writing guidelines for herself on the blank sheets of vellum.

The process was slow, it always was for she didn’t want to make too many mistakes while copying and nor did she want the words to be slanted when she did start copying, so therefore, she needed guidelines, to keep the words even and straight. Finally, she then picked up the quill, unstopped the ink vial and dipped the nib of her quill into the black depths. Lynx would then gently scrape the excess ink from the quill by using the lip of the vial and she lifted the quill to start the process of copying. Slowly, the quill would grace the surface of the blank sheet of vellum and her pale gaze would gently cross between the old book and the piece of vellum that was was copying onto. Reading it one word at a time and then her quill would slowly follow the curve of the words in the old book, in order to keep the similarities. After all, she was only copying the information from one book to another and she preferred to copy the style of the writing as well, so then there wouldn’t be much difference between the the old and the new. However, that took time and it made for slow going, it also took a lot of concentration per word. Perhaps when she was finished with copying the book, she may even read the book herself without having to actually focus on the process of copying the words.

Suddenly, the ink blotched upon the page and a soft ”petch,” rose to her lips as she placed the quill down upon the desk in order to pick up the pen knife. She would then lightly press the sharp end of the pen knife to the page and slowly with precise up and down movements, she would scrape away the ink, mindful of the other written words on the page. She didn’t want to blotch them as well or she would have to go back over the page, to scrape away words and redo them and that was something that she wanted to avoid. So after that blotched mistake was scraped away, she placed the pen knife back down upon the surface of the desk and her pale fingers gently brushed away the ink that had been scraped off the vellum’s surface. Allowing a moment of pause so then to let the ink upon the page dry, she would then pick up the quill and dip it back into the vial of ink, scraping away the excess before she continued to copy the words from the old fragile book, onto the page that was sitting in front of her on the drawing board.

The feel of vellum underneath her skin reminded her of something, it felt familiar, so very familiar and she wasn’t exactly sure why it did feel like that. She lifted the quill from the page and dipped it into the vial of ink once again, scraping away the excess before resuming the copying process. She had a feeling that she had done something in her previous life, something that had to do with writing and it ate away at her as a frown creased her forehead and her quill wobbled, making a wobbly ‘l’ letter. A sigh fell upon her lips as she placed the quill down upon the desk, only to pick up the pen knife to gently scrape away the mistake. One thing she did know about when using the pen knife to scrape away mistakes, was to be gentle, because she could very well tear the page of vellum and then that would mean that she would have to start all over again. It was something she was hoping to avoid at all costs. Once the correction had been scraped away and she had gently brushed away the scraped off ink, she picked up her quill to resume the process.

The day had gone by fairly quickly and Lynx returned back to the library after yet another break from copying the book. She had gone for a walk to clear her head, to draw in fresh oxygen to relax and rest her eyes and she was now returning back to the library to continue. However, as she sat down at the desk, she realized that there was only one page left of the book to copy and an excitement filled the woman. Eagerly writing up guidelines onto her blank piece of vellum before picking up the quill, dipping it into the ink vial and continued the process of copying. However, this time round she found that she was making a lot more mistakes and realized this as she put down the pen knife for the seventh time, perhaps it was because she was rushing the completion of the book. She had to slow down, and pay more attention to what she was doing, otherwise this process would take much longer if she continued at this pace. Lynx took a moment to draw in a deep breath, allowing it to fill her lungs before she lightly dipped her quill and began to copy again, at a much slower pace.

Her pale blue eyes observed every curved within the words. Making sure to also copy the punctuation, it was just as important as the words that was written, otherwise the text would just be a constant flow of information with nothing to separate them and make some important points stand out against other less than important points. However, it was best to take both type of points and mould them into one, because sometimes the less than important points helped someone make sense of the important points within a text. She paused to dip her quill into the ink, taking note of the fact that after her burst of excitement had passed, she made less mistakes and wasn’t scraping out every second word to fix it because of her rushed movements. Slow, she had to be slow and careful when it came to copying, an important thing to mentally take note of. Perhaps, she might even make a note of that in her journal when she returned home to her puppies. Puppies she would enjoy taking out for walks later that night. With that simple goal in mind, she allowed it to soothe her movements and her pale gaze darted between the book and piece of vellum with each word copied. Taking the time to commit to memory of each curve and loop of the word in the old, fragile book, so then she could copy that onto the piece of vellum that she was currently working on.

Finally, there was only one word left to copy and her pace quicken, which only ended up with a wobbly word. With a sigh gracing her soft lips, she would gently scrape the mistake off the page using the pen knife before dipping her quill back into the ink. After she made sure that the excess had been scraped off the nib, she paid more attention to the word. To the loops and curves that each letter of the word made, exercising patience. It was the only way that she would be able to finish the copying of this book, so she had to be patient, make her strokes slow and steady. Finally, the curve ended and the end stop was placed and Lynx sat back to admire the last page of her handy-work. Indeed, it had taken her quite some time to complete the process, but at least it was complete. Slowly, she would place the stopper back into the vial of ink and she left the last page to dry for a moment as she closed the old book. Once the page was dry, she would place it on the bottom of the stack of vellum that she had copied the book onto and she sat the pages upon the old book, lifting the book and the pages that had been copied onto, up into her arms to take to Zandar and Kvanth, they would deal with the sheets of vellum being bound into in a book. Once they had been handed over to the librarian, she set about packing up her work space, she was finished for the day.
