She should have been too angry at him to do it, but within her culture it was a long standing tradition. Those that were dead or gone were always honored on their day of birth. She had too many memories of the good times to dwell on the bad times and part of her - the part that didn't hate - didn't want her twins to grow up knowing how much she felt lost and shattered by their father's actions.

Tasi was always so enthusiastic to celebrate his father's birthday at the park, so even though the babes were too young to understand, Kavala made it a point to take them all together and light candles as well. So she hitched up the pony cart, packed a picnic big enough to feed a dozen, and placed the bocce ball game in the cart. Then she set them all off to town to participate in her little ritual.

"Hatot was born on the 40th of Summer right?" Tasival asked for the tenth time. Kavala nodded as she drove, guiding Sivak through the streets of Riverfall into the Knirin Park and down to the lake itself. Once there, she unloaded the children, laid out a blanket, and put up a little sun shade over the babies. Then she got Tasival to help her light the candles... four of them, one for each child and herself... which she set afloat on the lake. Then, together, they made a little speech for Riaris' birthday, thanking him for helping make them a bigger better family and for the joy he brought to their lives through his bloodline.

"Thank you for the gift of Ralac and Ia'del. Thank you for accepting Tasi as your son. For a time it meant the world to him to have a father. We will take good care of your legacy and make sure you are not forgotten even though it was you that left us. Be well where ever you are. Happy Birthday."

And with that the candles, lit, were sent on their way to be blown out into the lake by a gentle breeze.

Then... when the ritual was done and the candles were floating out onto the lake to honor Riaris' birthday, Kavala broke out the bocce ball game for her and Tasi to enjoy before they had lunch. Sivak, unhooked from the cart, grazed tethered to a tree nearby while the park slowly began to fill with people.

Bocce Ball was a simple game. It was suitable for children, but it was also fun for adults... especially if wine was involved. Kavala brought lots of wine, three bottles to be exact, namely because sometimes their park outings drew crowds of strangers... humans and Akalaks a like. And when they brought Bocce Ball, people often stopped to play.

Quietly, she divided the eight balls, giving four blue ones to Tasi and keeping four red ones for herself. Glancing at the babies often, Kavala then let Tasi toss out the jack on a sufficiently flat piece of ground and faced off with her young son to begin their game.

Bocce Ball Rules :
  • Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller target or object ball called the jack.
  • There are 4 balls to a side, or team, and they are made in two colors to distinguish the balls of one team from the 4 balls of the opposing team.
  • A coin toss will determine which team has the jack and which color balls that team selects.
  • The jack is thrown out by a member of the team having won the coin toss to start the game.
  • The same player throwing the jack must deliver the first bocce ball.
  • The opposing team will then deliver their bocce balls until the point is taken or they have exhausted their 4 balls.
  • This "nearest ball", rule governs the sequence of thrown balls. The side whose bocce is the closest to the jack is called the "in" ball and the opposing side the "out" ball. Whenever a team gets "in" it steps aside and allows the "out" team to bowl.
  • A team has the option of rolling, throwing, bouncing, banking, etc. its ball down the court provided it does not go out-of-bounds or the player does not violate the foul markers.
  • A player also has the option of "spocking" or hitting out any ball in play in trying to obtain a point, or decreasing the opposing team's points.
  • At the end of each frame (when both teams have exhausted 4 balls each), a designated official under the scrutiny of the captain/or designee of each team, will determine the points scored.
  • Scoring points are all those ball of one team closer to the jack than the closest ball of the opposing team, which can be determined by viewing or by mechanical measurement.
  • In the event that the two balls closest to the jack belong to opposing teams and are exactly the same distance from the jack, no points will be awarded, and the jack returns to the team which delivered it.
  • Only balls which are distinguishably closer to the jack than any opponent's balls may be awarded points.

[Knirin Gardens] Screw The Past - Bocce Ball Is The Future

He wasn't precisely sure what had brought him to the gardens in the first place. It was beautiful, that was for certain, but gradually Voss was coming to realize there was little in this city of waterfall's that wasn't stunning. It was all foreign too, flowers were soft instead of slimy, buildings couldn't be made of coral like the Charoda fashioned, and as far as he could tell 'trees' were the equivalent of coral beneath the sea, for they were everywhere (except apparently in this 'Sea of Grass' which he had to investigate as well) and housed many types of wildlife, just like coral. Unlike coral, however, the land dwellers had no ability to harness the tree power and make it grow for them, as the Charoda did. It was of course only one of the many many differences between the land and sea, but one that had struck his wandering mind as the most odd.

At present Voss had gratefully shifted into his Dhani form when he had found the still and serene lake in the middle of the gardens. This as well was foreign to him, for though the water felt good and right, it was softer than the rough saltwater, and so placid it at first took the Iyvess aback. He dipped himself beneath the surface, breathing gratefully through the gills in his neck and startling several large, brightly colored fish that darted away. He remembered stories of bodies of water within the land, the Iyvess calling them, ocean puddles. He could understand the term now as he dove as deep as he could and began pushing through the water beneath the bridges and around the sections of land with Gazebos on them. This was far easier than using the strange human legs, and though his aquatic quarters were welcome, this was even more so. Perhaps not as refreshing as a dip in the Sea, but it was a good spot to keep in mind when he was the furtherest from the ocean and simply needed the feel of water surrounding him.

After a few laps around the lake the Iyvess floated to the surface of the water, remaining motionless as he watched the fish, frogs, and turtles go on their merry way below him. The Voss before coming to Riverfall was rarely patient enough to use this technique to hunt, but the new, more placid Voss highly enjoyed simply basking with the sun on his back. He could have stayed their forever, given the chance and inclination.

It only took a few bells, however, for the fish to grow less weary of the large scaled thing's presence. He breathed calmly, waiting, watching. One of the large fish from before came by him, catching a bug on the surface of the water, and once it had it darted beneath him.

Voss's hands flashed out snatching the fish's body. All he needed to do was puncture its scales, sinking his claws into its flesh and it would be his. Voss, however, was no skilled fisher. His prey balked and began swimming ferociously, with more force than the Dhani expected, darting by. Voss whipped his body around, snapping with elongated head at the tail of what he had hoped would be lunch...only for it to disappear into the darkness of the lake.

A soft sigh escaped the Dhani's throat and he poked his head above the water, glancing around to see an Akalak and Konti couple staring down at him in a mixture of confusion, and...perhaps disgust? Voss waved good naturedly at them then dove back down and began to make his way back to shore.

When he re-surfaced again he heard high pitched laughter, that of a child. Deep brown eyes, nearly black, blinked, niscillitating membrane drawing upward to allow better vision above the water. Edging closer to the shore Voss held himself in place with one hand on the bank, resting his head upon soft grasses to watch a scene taking place not far from his position, of a Konti woman and a smaller white haired Akalak child. Voss was still not sure what made a few of the Akalak's have white hair. He had seen some, but very few compared to the dark hair of the rest. The Konti, however, were easily recognizable by the faint sheen of scales, pale skin, and matching pale hair. Perhaps it was the mother Konti who had given her son her white hair? Voss blinked and watched the strange game, at first not understanding anything about it, or the point. He watched the two take turns throwing balls at...another ball? Sometimes if they were too far away from the other ball they had to be taken away, sometimes it seemed that nothing happened at all.

Voss realized there were two other, very small children when one of them began crying. The Konti woman went to tend to them, and the younger boy went to throw another ball. Sometimes he bounced it, sometimes it just rolled. Voss watched him concentrate, and he threw it quite harder than he probably should have, it bounced several times and went with a splash into the lake not far from Voss.

Without thinking the Iyvess ducked beneath the water and shifted his tail, weaving gracefully downwards and snatching the blue object before it could barely sink at all. Triumphant the Iyvess surged up to the surface coming quite rapidly out of the water, and looking around for the boy, who was standing right on the edge of the water, and got drenched by the resulting water displacement, staring up in horror at the massive serpent that had just appeared in front of him.

Voss lowered himself immediately as Tasi tumbled backwards, a startled cry escaping from his mouth. Voss, horrified by himself quickly put the blue ball next to the boy, which only seemed to frighten him more as he saw the massive clawed hand approach him.

"Sssorry, I am sssorry little one. I only wanted to get you ball." Voss said, shifting backwards in the water to draw himself away from the child.

[Knirin Gardens] Screw The Past - Bocce Ball Is The Future

Kavala was concentrating on teaching Tasi Bocce Ball. It was her fault in a way that he couldn’t throw as well as probably a child his age should. Playing catch wasn’t her forte nor did she spend a lot of time doing physical things with him other than tumbling and combat training. While Tasi was learning about knives and magic and self defense, they often didn’t stop to play much, which was why this trip was important.

But Tasi wasn’t good at throwing balls. They went backwards, sideways, and rarely forward. He chased them up the hill, down the hill towards the water, and all different directions. Kavala would have minded more if he wasn’t having fun, but the boy was practically glowing with all his mother’s attention and with how much fun he was having running around in the cool fall air. He had his shoes off, as did his mother, and was currently chasing a ball down the hill to rescue it from the water when Ia’del coughed.

Kavala was careful with her youngest, whom was born prematurely and with a serious respiratory problem. The healers of The Sanctuary had worked the baby through the dangerous first season, and had relaxed more during her second season… but the young fragile babe was still sometimes prone to upper respiratory infections so any little cough made her mother worry.

And of course, Kavala turned her back on Tasi, missing the potential danger lurking the lake. The lake never had any issues. It had no large fish, no predators, and about the most dangerous thing in it for a child was a flock of geese that spotted unattended bread. The birds could get nasty and pushy, robbing any child of any treat at any time. But now there were no birds in sight… which in retrospect should have told Kavala something was going on.

She heard Tasi cry suddenly and whirled around. Bright blue eyes surveyed the situation, hands already gracing her daggers. Kavala didn’t mess around when it came to danger to her children. But she wasn’t sure this was exactly danger. Tasi’s cry wasn’t really one of pain or true fear, it was of surprise and wonder and a little bit of not understanding what he was seeing.

When she saw the creature… no man… place the ball down beside her son and back away a bit, her grip on the daggers relaxed. She could see the scales out in the water and let her eyes scan the face and form of the man while she slowly moved in her son’s direction. With alacrity but without alarm, Kavala drew up beside Tasi, gave a quick glance over her shoulder at the infants, and reached down to pick up the boy and put him back on his feet. Tasi was brave. But if it had been Shayru, the fight would have already started. She handed him the ball and turned him around away from the stranger and gave him a little push. The toddler bounded off, glancing over his shoulder at his mother and the newcomer, but not disobeying her orders.

Again, Kavala was thankful it was Tasi and not Shay steering the little boys form that instant.

“Hello. And thank you for that. He can swim just fine, but I’d rather he didn’t do so. I didn’t know he’d wandered so far.” Kavala suspected Tasi had kicked the ball even further, not on purpose, but because he was awkward at his age and tended to stumble over things or into them.

“I’m Kavala. That was my son Tasival. My other son and daughter are up on the blanket. We were playing Bocce Ball and going to break our fast. Would you like to join us?” The Konti invited half because she was curious about him, and half because it was the right thing to do. The man looked alone, and though he was built like a warrior, he had incredibly gentle eyes.

“You’re one of the visitors, aren’t you? The Iyvess everyone have been talking about.”
She made the simple words more of a statement of fact and less of a question. But that didn’t stop her from tilting her head and studying his form, letting her eyes sweep down his frame until the scales started to show and disappeared into the water.

There was a very direct intent in the Konti woman's eyes when she swept down the hill towards her son. Voss recoiled slightly more, afraid of what was about to occur, but even as he did so he could see her assessing the situation, the child, after the initial shock, seeming much more fascinated than scared of the large snake, to whom Voss ventured a toothy, but genuine smile as he was ushered back towards the blankets and game.

To the word of thanks he was given, Voss gave a slight inclination of his head, smiling as the woman revealed herself to be one named Kavala. Despite having to deal with three children one of whom might have been in danger, she seemed quite calm and entirely hospitable. Though Voss's state of mind didn't mind, many people in Riverfall had not received the Iyvess quite as well, or at least the aggressive and belligerent Akalaks, the greatest offenders, always seeming to find him as he wandered about the city. It was why he was familiar with females assessing his form as she did then, though not so familiar with people taking in his Dhani form. He wasn't sure if this was a standard part of a greeting or simply how the individuals of Riverfall sized up their new guests, but regardless Voss's dark eyes assessed the Konti in turn.

The way the sunlight left a faint shimmer along her skin, as if she was covered with tiny scale shaped rainbows, the curves of her body that marked her as distinctly female, though for Iyvess their forms were generally uniform despite gender. Her strange hair, the color of soft bleached wood lying upon the beach after the tides came out. The Iyvess had stories of the Konti, who dwelled on equal parts land and sea, and for this Voss could have respect, more so than the Svefra who had need of hacking up these 'trees' and lived upon them and not the Sea.

As it was there was a pause between Kavala's question and the Dhani's reply, muscles moving in his vibrant yellow throat as his mind processed all of this new information. His voice rumbled out of his throat, the telltale sibilance coming out, and a thickness to his voice that betrayed his not full understanding of Common. Kavala, Tassival, it iss nice to meet. I am Sarshasssilivoss, and asss you ssay Iyvess. I think you find it eassier to call me Vosss, yess?"

His head tilted, gazing at the abandoned 'Bocce ball' game. "I would much like to join you. I am not ssure if allowed, but I try to catch a few fish in pond, it not turn out sso good or I offer sssome up for thiss fasst. If you wait moment methinkss it eassier to join you with legss."

Voss hesitated a moment. It wasn't as if shifting forms was something supremely private, but he hadn't often done it specifically in the view of other races, especially ones with the piercing gaze Kavala possessed. She had been so kind to invite him, however, it would seem rude to ask her to give him a moment to transform in private, so Voss simply closed his eyes and focused inwards, a long exhalation the only precursor to his transformation into human guise. Snout shortened, the deep gray scales and bright yellow muddying in color, drawing together and fusing into tanned flesh, his body shrinking somewhat as his tail split and bones shifted and connected themselves into two individual appendages. Eyes shrank, drawing together and webbing receded, leaving a tall man peering up at the Konti, the barest stubble visible on his face and head. Having adapted to the need to shift between forms it took only a moment for him to retrieve his woven kelp trousers and emerge dripping onto the land, a few shaky steps bringing him back to the odd way that everyone else crossed the land, following closely behind Kavala, and eager to see the other children.

"If it not sseem too sstrange, what iss thingss you enjoy eating? I never have know there were sso many foodss upon the land." Though spoken to Kavala, Voss made eye contact with Tasi as well, leaving the question open to the child whose curiosity was seeming to get the better of him.

Most of the fight went out of Kavala when she had a chance to speak to the man who was doing anything but threatening her son. Upon first glance it looked like it could have been a dangerous situation. But the reality of it was, Voss was just trying to help. She saw that and realized it for what it was without any more fuss than was needed. This relaxed her somewhat enough for her to begin to enjoy the exotic stranger and his presence.

“It’s nice to meet you as well, Voss.” She replied to his courtesy, finding it surprising that a foreigner had already picked up the niceties of Mizaharian Society. Then again, from what she had heard the Iyvass hadn’t always been gone from the land world. They were just returning too it. “You’d be very welcome to join us. I don’t see why you can’t fish in the lake. I’ve seen fat bass there myself basking in the sun in the deeper parts of the waters. I suspect they have very few predators and dine quite nicely on frogs, smaller fish, and anything bug-like that comes to enjoy the lake. But in truth, while the addition would be a delight, we have more than enough food for everyone. You’re more than welcome to play with us if you’d like then join us for a meal afterwards.” Kavala said, gesturing to the balls that were scattered about.

She glanced over to where the blanket was and the two infants were dozing. They seemed to be doing fine on their own, though she was sure Ralac would be awake soon and wanting to either join them in the form of being carried straight into the action or want something to eat. Kavala had brought bottles for him since her milk was not strong enough to keep him satiated much anymore. She mixed finely milled bits of food into his drink, as some of the women in the city had taught her, in the form of cereal to make him feel fuller and add more nutrients to his diet. He was growing fast. Little Ia’del was further behind her sibling, content to nurse and always quiet and peaceful; willing to watch from the sidelines.

While she waited for him to shift his shape politely, he surprised her with his next question. She answered as best she could remember. Sometimes packing for things in the morning became a blur of chaos at her home with all the children needing things at once.

“We’ll show you what we have in the basket when its time to eat. But I can assure you there’s something there for everyone. We have fruit, meat rolls, some bread, honey, wine, and even seaweed wraps stuffed with crab meat. They are my favorite.”
Kavala said, failing to mention the sweet jam sandwiches she had tucked in there with the crusts removed for Tasi.

Kavala took a step back, turned her son around and nudged him towards the balls, and waited for Voss to join them. “Your two forms are quite beautiful. I hadn’t expected the Dhani from the sea to be so large nor so elaborately patterned. We have sea snakes around here, but they are rare in the waters. We are more used to seeing plainly colored eels and their like. Are you from….” She paused a moment, not sure it was polite to ask such personal questions.

“If it’s appropriate to ask that is. Are you from offshore somewhere near or farther away like in the warmer southern waters or even the outer oceans?” Kavala asked, curious as she lead the way up the hill and to the flat spot where the balls were scattered around. As she listened to Voss’ answer, she gathered the colored ones, tucked the white one under her arm for the moment. Then she retrieved a set of four more balls, this time green, and passed them to Voss along with the white one. She then equally divided the rest of them so that Tasi’ a red set and Kavala a blue. They each had four balls, except for Voss who had the white one as well.

Then, when he was done with his explanation, she quietly ran over the rules with him. Tasi already knew how to play.

“Since you are the visitor, we’ll let you go first!” Kavala said, gesturing towards the white ball. “Throw the white one out, then throw one of your green ones, trying to land it as close if not touching the white one. You get points for getting close to the ball and double if you touch it. But becareful not to knock it away. You throw out one of your green after the white, then Tasi will toss one, then I… then it will be your turn again. All strategy is allowed. You can just simply try to get close to the white one, or you can aim to knock your opponents balls out and away from the white one. It’s really a game like chess though on the outside it seems simple enough. I play it with my son to teach him strategy.” The Konti said, laughing slightly as she tried to juggle her awkward balls. Tasi was smarter. He had his balls, all except the one he was going to 'throw' piled at his feet.

With that, Kavala let Voss have free rein to try his hand. He’d find the balls heavy.. the white one the size of a large grapefruit, while the others were even bigger, more like the size of a child’s head.

Voss was exceptionally pleased by the returned polite greeting. Always having an interest in the strange land dwelling language, he knew aspects of it far better than some of his Iyvess peers, and it was one thing that had paid off here and there for him in his short time in Riverfall. It seemed it was doing so again now. His self satisfied smile dimmed somewhat in surprise at Kavala's compliment. He was most definitely not used to his Dhani or serpent form being complimented in such a way often, more used to the looks of realization and a wariness if not more negative emotions. The attention made a small flush rise in his tanned cheeks, but thankfully Kavala was already leading him across the grass at this point, giving him time to collect himself and respond.

"Ah, iss not rude. I wass born in Charbossi, all Iyvess are born there. We grow in ssafety of the city, which isss in warm watersss, and when we grow we are able to roam the Ocean in denss. Ssome choosse to sstay to protect Charodae. There are many bright colorss we come in, but not all."

The Iyvess grinned at the sound of rice and seaweed wrapped crab, he didn't know what 'rice' was, but he was quite familiar with the other two ingredients. As she explained Voss also made a mental note to go fishing in this place more often, it seemed the fish were well fed themselves, surely the schools needed thinning, at least a bit...

When introduced to the game of Bocce Ball, Voss was a bit more hesitant, however. After all of these niceties, he was a bit afraid of making an utter fool of himself. Of course the kindly Konti probably wouldn't laugh outright at him, but regardless he nodded a bit too emphatically when she said the game was quite like 'Chess' assuming that had a lot to do with moving balls from place to place as well. He wondered if they were bigger or smaller...

He was given his balls, and found himself having as much trouble holding them as Kavala, especially with the addition of the white one he needed to throw out first. Glancing at Tasi, he gracelessly dumped all 5 of his balls at his feet, each rolling a bit of a ways off. Swiftly he pulled them back close to his feet, getting a good grip in his left palm of the white ball and lifting it up, eyeing the grass in front of them.

If he threw it close there was a higher chance of both Kavala and Tasi doing much better than him at getting close to his ball, but if he did utilize his strength to throw it a good ways away he doubted he'd be able to aim correctly to actually get his own green orbs anywhere near it. In the end Voss pulled his arm backwards, getting a feel for the very solid weight of the ball and gave it a light underhanded toss, letting it bounce about 15 ft from where they stood. Bending over, Voss grabbed one of his green balls, eyeing the white one warily. He tried another underhanded throw this time, trying to make it the same or slightly lesser than before, but did not factor in the increased weight of the green ball. Instead of going nearly as far as the white one, it arced up in the air, hit the ground and stopped entirely a solid 7 feet from where it needed to be, not very far in front of Voss. The Iyvess grinned and shrugged.

"I wasss hoping to have besst shot on firsst try, sssilly me." He then glanced over to Kavala and Tasi to see how they would do.

"Do you play thiss game muchly?"
