Fall 80

With the noon sky glowing blue, and the smell of grass and leaves whiffed through the air, a young man, still in his teens followed a well worn path through the woods. The boy had a small shiver up his spine, like something was planned for him. He dismissed it entirely. Today was a routine patrol in the Bronze Woods. Nothing out of the ordinary would happen today, he had hoped. He walked slowly through the woods, his senses were heightened until he had reached the area where the his Patron Knight, Sera Catherine Hawke would be waiting. He thought about the strange silence of the woods, was there something bothering the animals? He stayed on the path, so the animals wouldn't be scared of him, this path has been used by a lot of knights and squires alike. He didn't like it.

He walked cautiously along the leafy path, it was late in fall and there was a bit of frost and a lot of leaves on the ground. The crunching of leaves underfoot was rather tensing to some, but Garland found them quite relaxing, but not today. He felt like he was being watched in the shadows.

He stopped and listened to the winds, he knew something was up, but he wasn't so sure. "It must be my imagination..."

Earlier that day...

Catherine had asked for the help of a few fellow squires to help Garland with his training, and in their training as well. Each squire had a quiver full of blunt arrows and a ranged weapon of their choice, except for the few that were going to use blunted spears and such.

Lilly Grant, the mysterious girl that had joined the knights a while back, she was a mage-knight. Not the most liked squire, but no one could argue that she isn't a good fighter and mage.

Oriana Earthtracker, the nervous girl that has been here for two or more years now, she wasn't the best squire, but she was certainly better than Garland with the bow, shield, and riding. In fact, she's almost better than him in every way, except in unarmed combat, where Garland was besting everyone who challenged him in that area. Mostly everyone.

Narick Lorgain, the loud boy, he was going to be the main problem for Garland here. He was the best with his bow and very dangerous enemy at range. Narick had a confident grin on his face, like one would expect on someone as loud as Narick Lorgain.

Cameron Tamson, the flirty young man that had been a bane in nearly every female squire in their little band of misfits, even Catherine. With skill on par with Garland in terms of weapon prowess, he won't be much bother.

Tobias Smythe, the silent bad boy of this band of misfits. Despite his good looks, he's not really sure why he's here. He doesn't need to learn how to use the bow, or any other weapon. Mostly he agreed to this was because he had to chance to give some payback to Garland after a rather awkward spar with him ended with Tobais pinned on the ground by the more skilled squire

Catherine had led the squires to their meeting place. Garland had to come here soon.
"Narick, Garland will be here soon. Could you go and follow him? If he's close, come back and warn us, then get ready to attack when I give the signal. I want everyone to hide and wait for my signal, he's going to have to run back to the city, and survive. Everyone wearing their 'uniforms'?" Everyone had been wearing leather armor, and masks covering their faces. Garland was told not to bring any of his weapons to their patrol, which of course he found strange, but he didn't argue about it.

The squires had taken up positions here and there, being spread out as to not attract any attention. Catherine had placed a note, a shield and a wooden practice sword by the tree, setting them nicely against each other. With that, Narick had come back, saying he spotted Garland making his way here. With that Catherine hid inside a bush and waited for Garland to take the sword and shield.

Garland took the note and read it carefully.

"Run you stupid boy, get back to the city"

It was an odd note, and as he took the sword and the shield, he heard a rustling in one of the bushes. Catherine had signaled the attack and started doubling back to the city.

Narick had taken aim at Garland, the blunt arrows wouldn't kill him, they would just hurt a lot. He had a lot of practice with the bow, he won't miss. He pulled the string back to his chest.

But luck or chance, a butterfly flew towards Oriana and landed on her nose. She tried shooing it away, but it was adamant on staying and tickling her nose. She tried to hold it in, but her face contorted, readying for a sneeze, and as Narick shot, she sneezed, making Garland turn to her general direction, with his weapons raised up, just enough for Narick to miss.

The fight had just begun.

With the attack in full swing, he had noticed that there were more than just a few squires here. He had met these squires at least once or twice during the training grounds, and most of the time, he would beat them, or at least give them a run for their Mizas. They all wore some sort of black leather armor and covered most of their faces, it didn't cover their voices or hair. A tiny oversight from his Patron he supposed. He raised up his shield at Narick, getting ready to block any incoming arrows from Narick, and Oriana. Those two were the only ones he needed to watch out for with bows or any other ranged weapons.

Being preoccupied with the two ranged archers, Lilly had decided to this would have been a good time to attack. She unsheathed her practice Katana, and charged. With Garland busy with the only two competent archers here(Cameron was still trying to nock an arrow in his bow), she had hit him on the back of the head. He was sent sprawling to the ground, he was no stranger to fighting against numbers, but this was different from your regular street gang, these were trained squires, not the best, but far better than the riffraff on the streets.

Garland didn't have time for pain, he groaned and got up, staring down Lilly. If he remembered correctly, she was a mage, he needed to be careful with her, if possible, it would be best to knock her out first. He needed to keep moving, and to fight them on. His chances of winning here are slim at best, and running would be difficult, with almost half dozen squires on him. He stepped forward, bashing his shield against Lilly's sword. Maybe with the close-quarters combat, he could turn the tide of battle.

Oriana aimed carefully at Garland, following his every move. She wasn't as good as Narick when it came to the bow, but she was good enough not to fumble her shot(Cameron had just dropped his bow). With a steady hand she had fired.

Garland had heard the twang of someone's bow, he dodged quickly, making the arrow miss it's mark and hit Lilly instead. The blunt arrows wouldn't kill, but it would definitely hurt.

"Ow! Hey!" Lilly yelled, distracted by Oriana's arrow.

Garland took the chance and attacked with his sword, striking her right in the gut, with the wind knocked out of her, he followed up with a bash with his shield, knocking her to the ground.

Cameron had given up with his bow and ran towards the clearing. Garland took the chance to head for the city, with Lilly recovering on the ground, and Cameron going to check up on her, he only needed to worry about Oriana and Narick. He could have sworn he had seen Tobias earlier with the group.

As he ran, Orina and Narick followed closely behind. Garland was fast, faster than the two at least, the only problem was they were wearing light leather armor, and he was wearing his full-plate armor, they will eventually catch up.

He just needed to keep running, oh his heart was beating fast, the trill of this exercise was ecstasy for him, the blood pumping through his veins and the small bleeding he had behind his head was a constant reminder that this was as real as it could get between squires.

As he made his way back through the woods, the heat from running for his "life" was a nice welcome from the growing cold of the coming winter season. He had seen Tobias in the way, he had heard he was a thief before, so he must be light on his feet. Garland could hear the others getting closer to him, he needed to get pass him. Tobias wasn't a fighter, Garland knew that much, but he didn't just want to win, he wanted to make an example, and show that he was strong enough to beat, not all but at least a few squires head on. Tobais was his mark, and then Cameron. Those two were the weakest physically, and he was at least more skilled at weapons than the two.

He was formulating a plan as he ran, making sure he got all of them into his plan, trying to plan for the most likely contingency. He attacked Tobais, but missed, the mage was dodging left and right as Garland swung his sword clumsily. He was forgetting the basics of swordplay. As he got closer to Tobais with his swings, the other two were getting closer, and in the distance, he could see that Cameron and Lilly were gaining on them. Lilly was fast, and she would have caught up with Garland in less than two chimes.

Garland slammed his shield at Tobais, and kicked him in the gut, sending to the ground. That was what he was doing, buying them time to catch up. Garland was foolish that he thought that he could have knocked out Tobais fast enough that the others would not have caught up.

Mentally slapping himself, he hopped back behind Tobais and raised his shield. Narick and Oriana had taken aim. Tobais had pushed himself up and threw a few punches here and there, to keep Garland's attention stay on him. It was working for the most part, as Narick let loose an arrow, hitting Garland in the arm. Oriana's shot had missed, but she quickly nocked another arrow to fire again.

Garland slammed his shield hard against Tobais' face, sending him to the ground, he was now glad he was wearing the full plate armor. The blunts still hurt, but not as much as he would have thought, like someone throwing rocks at someone hiding in a pot... Strange example, but it was the best Garland could come up with.

His mind was working overtime as Lilly was making her way towards him, he needed to keep moving, but with Lilly back in the game, running was out of the question. She would catch up to him in an heart beat.

Garland raised his shield to block an arrow Oriana had shot, he needed cover. He broke off to the treeline, but before he could make it to safety of the trees Lilly had cut him off. They had crossed blades with Garland fighting as well as he could in his current state of mind, he swung his sword wildly, almost feral, but he moved back to get his bearings. He had one eye on the two archers and the one katana wielding girl.

Cameron had just made it towards the the fight, he stopped for a moment to catch his breath, but he then joined the fray. Garland quickly turned, blocking Cameron's strike, but it left him open for Lilly to attack.

Tobais was out for the time being, so Oriana took the chance to pull him off to the side.

Narick took another shot, hitting Garland on the back of his head, where his wound was, sending a strong pain through his body. He didn't dare cringe or turn around, he would have been left open on one side, if he was going to leave one side open, he would leave the one where there was a chance to miss. Garland was visibly in pain, but he was strong enough to stay standing. He swung his sword at Cameron, the older squire blocked it easily, but Garland gave a swift kick to the leg to trip him up.

Cameron was sent to the ground by a strong kick. Garland moved back, trying to keep his distance from the archers. Lilly took the chance to attack Garland, while he was distracted by Cameron.

With a strong attack to the back of the knee, Lilly had made Garland kneel on the ground. She followed up in front of him, Garland was being beaten pretty badly, Lilly was building up res in her hand, it seemed like air was being sucked into her hand. She pushed her hand forward, sending a strong wind towards Garland, sending back towards the two archers.

The two archers pointed their bows at him as he lay on the ground.

"It's over, we won." Narick said with a grin, Garland knew when he was beaten... but he was one stubborn boy, he grew up learning never to give up.

"In your dreams." He had one chance at this, he grabbed a bunch of soil, and threw it up to blind Narick, while he shot up, knocking Oriana's bow out of her hand.

The two were stunned, he gave a strong head butt to Narick and grabbed his his arrows, throwing them across the road, scattering them. Garland did the same to Oriana and gave an uppercut, sending her to the ground. He grabbed his shield by the rim, he gave a spin and threw it at Lilly. She dodged it easily, but it wasn't suppose to hit, Garland grabbed his sword with two hands and charged at Lilly. He got her on the waist and them kicking her in the knee to knock her down.

With the opening he was looking for, he had made a run for it. Cameron and Tobais were getting back up, a bit dazed, but still able to fight. The chase was back on, but Garland was weak now, it wouldn't take much to get him down. He needed to survive, and run. Fighting was stupid at this point. He sheated his wooden sword, sprinting to the finish as fast as he can.

Catherine waited by the entrance of the woods, she was actually surprised to see Garland in the distance. Tobais used his projection to project his hands towards Garland's legs, tripping him up.

It seemed like the thrown arrows didn't slow them down at all, then again, would anyone pick up arrows scattered during a pursuit? Sure if a few of them were close, but they were spread up around and Garland was making his escape. Cameron have made it to the tripped up Garland, pinning his hands on the ground and the fake sword on his throat.

Garland wasn't going to give up, but it seemed like his mind was made up for him. Catherine made her way towards the squires. She gave a smile and sent them all away. She was very proud at Garland but she wouldn't show it. "Good job, everyone. I honestly didn't expect you to make it this far. Now everyone, get some rest." She said and everyone left.

Garland felt the wound on the back of his head, touching it softly. "Ow. I'm going to the infirmary if that's alright, Sera."

Catherine nodded and sent Garland away to get treated.

occSorry for short post, but I just want to wrap this up

Running +2
Endurance +2
Tactics +1
Unarmed Combat +1

Lores:
  • Narick: Skilled archer
  • Oriana: Good with a bow
  • Lilly: Mage, Air reimancer
  • Tobias: Mage, Projector
  • Cameron: Not the best fighter
  • Mock Ambush
  • Sometimes you just got to run
  • Running in full-plate armor is exhausting
  • Blunt arrows hurt
  • Once defeated, improvise

Shield Points:
Shield Points Earned Reason
+1 Training
+1 Patron

Total: +2 Shield Points
Even though Garland was originally out on patrol, he didn't do much patrolling due to the ambush. However, since is patron set up the whole 'mock ambush' I felt it was appropriate to add a point for her involvement even though she only appeared at the end.

Comments :
What a fun and dynamic read. I liked how you were able to convey so many different things that were going on all at the same time. I also liked how Sera Catherine made it hard enough that Garland was essentially beaten twice even though he managed to make it back to the city.

Just a friendly reminder to include the date (season) for your seasonal expenses. I know you're a squire and you don't have any seasonal expenses, so it's not strictly necessary, but it makes it easier for graders who are checking your CS to see that everything is up to date (since they might not know when you became a squire and if you are still a squire).

Injuries :
Head wound: 7 days to heal if treated at the infirmary. This is based on the fact that there was an existing injury and the blunted arrow opened up the wound.

Don't forget to edit/delete your grade request in the grade request thread.

If you have any questions or concerns about your grade please feel free to send me a message.

Enjoy.
