The 46th of Fall 514

Stifling a yawn, Cassidee waited behind her mentor while he finished working on something. Her attention drifted from him to the books on his desk. Unsurprisingly she did not recognize any of the titles. In fact many were written in different languages with texts that ranged from jagged and angular to the more flowing letters like she was used to. There was one or two that looked like weird pictures. Curiosity drove her to reach out for one similar to that sitting on a pile at the edge of the Valdyor’s desk. Her hand drifted over the rough binding of the book and sunk into the inlayed letters.

A soft chuckle reached her ears, and she jerked her hand back like the book was suddenly a snake. Leaving behind the book, she turned her attention to her mentor. Their eyes locked. “What you wrote is rubbish.” The words caused a sudden weight to plummet in her stomach. Her mouth opened slight in protest, but what she saw in his eyes silenced her. The opening between her lips widened and then snapped shut. The man’s laughter mirrored the amusement she saw in his eyes. “It is like the ravings of some mad man.” His laughter continued after his words.

Only one set of words formed in Cassidee mind. I am sorry. However the thoughts would not manifest into words. Something odd happened to her. The weight in her stomach disappeared as his laugher continue. Her own laughter caught in her throat, as she fought a vain battle against it. Soon she was laughing with him. Her stomach felt lighter and her chest loosened. Her mind began to turn again uprooting the sense of failure before it had a chance to take root. Taking a deep breath, she managed to suppress the laughter.

“I am sorry Cassidee” Valdyor said as his voice took on a serious tone. The words where like a sudden blade cutting through the sense of relief Cassidee had felt. Her chest tightened again and a small gulp escaped her lips. “I was not clear in what I wanted from you.” Valdyor’s sigh made her cringe slightly. That sense of failure returning to try to take root again. “This project was meant to take the better part of a season.” Cassidee brought her hand to her face, the feeling of failure buried by a feeling of stupidity. Valdyor laughed at her again, bringing her back to this world. “I want you to continue to try, but don’t push yourself like before. It’s not good to push yourself like that.”

Cassidee nodded. “So when do you expect to see the report by?” She ask as her mind broke through a fog of sleepiness that lingered on her mind.

I guess he just likes laughing Cassidee noted as the sharp pitch of his laugh caused her to wince slightly. His continued laughter started like small tapping but became a hammer driving a nail into her brain. Covering her right eye, she pressed down against her forehead to fight back against the raisin A sigh left her lips and she placed her hips on her side. The laughter stopped. Opening her mouth, she started to restate her question. “It takes as long as it takes” Valydor interrupted her before she could get the words out. Silence grew between them as Cassidee tapped her finger against her leg.

After a mark it seemed clear that Valdyor was not going expand his statement any further. A louder sigh, almost like a groan escaped Cassidee’s lips. “Ok how about I bring you something on the 55th?" Her proposal echoed with tone of irritation. Her hand rubbed her forehead a little more keeping the growing headache at bay. The skin under her fingers paled as her fingered pressed down. Red marks followed them as her hand slide down her face.

“That sounds good, but I don’t want the whole report.” Valdyor said after a pause. The pause seemed to last forever to Cassidee. A breath she did not realize she was holding escaped her chest. Turning, she let her attention lingered on the books behind Valdyor. A title jumped out at her. The Spider’s Toxin. A small huff left her lips as she mentally read the title slowly. Pulling it down, she turned to leave “How about you bring me about you bring me just the basic information by then?” His last statement gave her pause.

Raising her right hand in the air, she gave a slight nod and let her arm drop. Flipping open the book, She only partially watched where she was going. In the book, all the words were written in common. Snorting back a laugh, she snapped the book closed. Of course She dismissed the book, embers of anger speckled the thought. Winding back through the bookshelf’s she made her way back to the table for the apprentices. The book thumped loudly against the table as Cassidee dropped it.

Raffling through the reports she had compiled previously. Pushing them roughly to the side, the pile collapsed. With a small growl, she picked the pile back up. All useless She huffed mentally the embers from before flaring. Her finger tapped impatiently on a blank piece of paper. Pulling out a book, the whole pile tumbled over. Sparing it only a glare, she flipped through the book. Shoveling it roughly to the side, she went back to tapping on the text. A few marks past. I know. She suddenly stood up causing the collapsed pile to spread further over the table. Without even noticing it, she charged out of the door.

Enter The Cribellum

Cassidee quietly placed her own books on a back table away from the rest of patrons in the Cribellum. The soft light of an opal gloom illuminated the table far better than in the lab. Pulling out a chair, she sat down and pulled both books to her. Flipping through the anatomy book, she flipped to the section on venom glands. The letters where clear and simple, but her eyes still burned slightly causing a small stab of pain in her brain. Reaching out, she rubbed her eyes. Despite this a smile crossed her face. The musky smell of books caused a feeling of nostalgia to wash over her thoughts.

Pulling the other book toward her. Her hand ran over the rough leather binding before she opened the book. A blank page greeted her. Reaching to her right, she sought a pen and ink, but found none. How annoying. A small ember or rage passed through her mind threatening to reignite have being cold by the comfortable air of Kalinor. Pushing back the chair, she stood. The squeak of wood against stone echoed through the Cribellum, and she felt several people look her way. Turning slightly red in the ears, she pushed the chair carefully back.

Her eyes drifted across the room. They skipped over the other patrons before falling on man about the same age as her mentor. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and began to move toward the man. His hair line seemed to have recessed even further than the last time she had saw him. His face seem to hold more wrinkles but he was still here. This place could not exist without him. Cassidee felt a warm feeling in her mind as she thought about it. “Calvino-Dovna” She called out to him softly as she approached. “It’s been a while.”

The man turned to face her. He paused as if thinking for a second. “Ah Cassidee, it had indeed been awhile.” He said, Cassidee imagined a fondness in his words, but the man did nothing to confirm that. “So you have started working at the Research Facility. Excellent, though I always hoped I could convince you work here.” Cassidee gave an apologetic smile, and talked with Calvino for several marks before asking him for a pen and ink. “I think I can spare that, though I have been told to let you work too late.” He informed her before giving her the writing supplies. Cassidee thanked him and returned to her seat.

Several Bells passed in silence, as Cassidee summarized what her own book said about venom glands into the blank note book. With her mind not clouded by weariness, or giddy energy of adrenaline, she did her best to mimic the writing style of the book. With time, her vision grew blurry, but she tried to work through it. Stifling a yawn, she looked up to see Calvino approaching. “Time to go” His words reached her. Opening her mouth to protest, but the shaking of his head silence her. Without any further trouble, she packed up her things and left.

To be Continued come Winter.
