Hear No Evil Part V

5th of Winter 514AV

Switch found himself staring at a small box of materials; they were just thrown in the small box and dropped off without much of a care to who was to pick it up. Luckily Switch was already where he needed to be when it was dropped off. So it wasn’t long after the deliverer left (Nuit or Living Switch had no idea), and the pycon tore open the box and stared at the contents. His little hands brushed against each object as he stared at each. Yes yes.

Lifting the inch length of copper pipe Switch examined it completely, it was straight and narrow, and the exact thing he imaged now rested heavily in his hands, bouncing the winter rays of Syna off its curved surface. A smile found itself gracing the odd skeletal features of Switch’s face, it was an eerie sight to behold and Switch tried his best to cradle the pipe under one arm as he reached into the box for some of the other parts, an auger, a bit of wire, some other lovely bits and pieces he had ordered. Nodding after ensuring that everything he had ordered was found within the gadgeteer returned the pipe to the box and picked it up.

Stumbling and waddling slowly Switch made his way as close as he could to the workbench before he set the box down and decided it was time to get to work. Taking out the pipe, the auger the pycon sat himself on one end of the pipe and placed the sharp point to the curved surface of the pipe. Pressing hard the pycon did the best he could to keep the pipe from rolling as he started cranking on the auger; slowly he could see a small hole being produced as sharp metal curls came rippling out of the pipe. It was hard work and the small dent Switch was considering a hole was still a lot of long work before he could call it a complete hole. He paused as he looked at the pipe and the auger, this was going to be a tiring procedure and yet it was amazingly calming already. Yes yes… Drill drill… Make hole… yes yes.

Break time was over, and the Pycon went once more to his work, putting the bit once more into the dent he had already created straight the Pycon grunted as he started the cranking once again, slow and steady, this was one project Switch knew he couldn’t afford to be quick about.

Crank, crank crank. The auger’s bit bit deeper into the pipe in a slow twisting of its curving blades. The beveled cutting edges made the slowly forming hole straight and narrow, much like the actual pipe itself.

Four Chimes Later…

Switch found himself hunched over the hole he was creating; he was only half way through the pipe’s opening as best he could guess. Yet it seemed so far away. Giving a grimace the Pycon huffed and picked up the auger once more to continue and ultimately finish the first hole. You can do this Switch. This is what you have planned for these last few seasons. You can complete this hole and then make a second one and then add the membranes and liquid and bead and the wire and… And…

He paused and shook his head, You can finish this… Choosing to ignore what he knew was going to be the end of his first major project on this isle of the undead. So with a sigh Switch gave the auger another slow started crank session, bent on finishing this first hole.

Four Chimes Later

Hole number one was completed, the hole was straight and smooth leading into the center of the pipe. Nodding as he could see it was a success Switch picked up his diagram, examined and then picked up the wire that came within the box and tied a knot on one end, it was a struggle to get it to happen, but once he got the tails to curve and tighten down the knot formed nicely. The knot was on one side of the wire, close to a short nub of the wire, the rest of it was hanging down towards the ground. Picking up the whole wire he fed the long thread into his pipe and kept going until the knot made contact with the hole. It slid in slightly but stopped halfway through and it wouldn’t budge any further.

Looking into the pipe he saw the length of the wire left coiling slightly at the bottom, but there needed to be more in order for Switch to get his beads on them and then back up through the other whole he had yet to make. Contorting and twisting Switch had made his body slender with two thin arms and hands to grab and yank on the wire to bring it in further. Another hand was forming, close to the body that’s whole job was to deposit bits of his body into the hole around the wire’s knot and the open gaps to keep it from coming lose. So with body formed Switch wiggled and slid himself into the pipe and pulled hard on the wire. It wiggled and waggled, slowly making its way further into the hole until he could just see the knot just before the edge of his drilled hole.

Slamming the third hand up into place he grimaced and yelped as he tore bits of his own flesh into the hole, cramming it into the hole to seal it. When Switch lowered his hand he smiled in relief, a bit shaky, that the hole was filled nicely. Pulling himself from the pipe he grabbed the three little beads and fed them onto the wire. With those in place Switch held it up near the pipe’s inner curve in line with where the wire came into it, not touching the curve with the beads Switch made a note as to how far he needed to go, but it wasn’t going to be easy to go three beads up from the hole on top.

Hmm… He frowned and then held up a hand, “That’s it!” Holding up his hand he placed it at the edge of the hole and using his other two hands he held up the wire and made the third hand squish and squash into the proper spacer for the holes before he left the inside of the pipe and sat on the pipe’s top curve. The hand had not lost its shape and that was a good thing. Resting the marker hand on the edge of his first hole he marked the location of his second hole with a bit of his clay and allowed his body to release the form he had taken, it wasn’t hard to do and his body just snapped back to his skeletal shape.

Picking up the hole he sighed and lined up the bit with his mark and started to drill it out. One more hole. Just one more. Switch grimaced as he set his bony clay arse down on the pipe and kept at the hard work.

6th of Winter 514

The second hole took Switch a lot longer than he thought it would. It was a tiring task and Switch had to stop not long after the bell ended and he found himself sleeping the rest of the fifth away. On the third Bell of the sixth Switch found himself needing to finish the task and decided to get working right away… And there is where he found himself now. The second hole finally finished a few chimes ago and him staring down into it. He could see the lovely wire with its three beads. It was a beautiful sight to see and he once more took on his odd shape from the day before to wiggle himself into the pipe and get the wire to feed through the hole once again, this time he had to add a small bend on the wire at the end so it could rest on the top of the pipe and not fall back through when he returned to the top of the pipe.

Once the wire was fed into the whole Switch slid out of the hole tied a knot upon the wire and once more crammed the knot back into the hole. Now both holes looked exactly the same. Well, minus the clay. Feeding himself back into the pipe he pulled on the wire and was satisfied that the knot had locked into place for him. The third hand came up, tearing a piece of his flesh off into the hole to surround the wire knot and then the pycon once more left the pipe. The wires and beads where in place, that task was the hardest for the pycon to get finished as the work was hard to start, yet now he could finish the rest of it.

Turning his attention on the box the gadgeteer looked within. The box held three more items, it didn’t seem to dawn on Switch that his current task was already nearly complete, three more objects within the box and they were all the same thing. Thin circles of leather rings in copper, they were the membranes of the apparatus, just needed to make sure they fit nicely and tightly, especially the last two as if they didn’t there would be problems with liquid.

Taking hold of one of the ringed membranes the pycon brought it over to the pipe. Setting the membrane on the ground Switch picked up the pipe and put it on its end, the opening near the wires and beads was at the top. Picking the membrane back up Switch put it near the opening and noting that it could fit, but it was just a bit too tight.

Frowning Switch stretched his body upward so he could see the pipe’s opening and the ringed leather. It was from this position he could see that it wasn’t too big, or too small, or that the pipe was bent. It was just a tight opening and the ring needed to be pushed gently into place. Tapping on the top of the membrane’s ring the pycon was able to put the top curve into the pipe.

“ Yes yes… Good good.” He muttered and started to tap the membrane’s ring around and around gently setting the ring further and further into the pipe.

Half a Chime Later

Switch stopped tapping, he didn’t want the membrane to go too far in and be touching the wire and the beads, so he left it alone from there and went to flip the pipe over. As he laid it down flat he could hear the beads rumbling in the tube before he rolled it back on its other end and peered within, at the bottom he could make out the wire and beads just barely in the gloom within the pipe, and the membrane on the bottom.

“Yes yes curved and dark. Just like the bowl with me within. Yes yes.” He muttered and picked up the second membrane from the box. This one was also ring in copper, yet he wanted to ensure that it was going to be waterproof as well and ran a hand across the outer edge of the ring tearing off and running a thin bead of his bodily material around the edge. It was an attempt to seal the edge some. Knowing that he was pretty waterproof having made a long trek on a boat from Zeltiva to Sahova, the pycon also knew that the ring was just the right size to fit within the pipe, but he wanted to ensure that the ring was sealed.

So pushing the clay ringed copper ringed membrane into place Switch struggled some after several times around and had to contort and stretch his body some so he could fit in the pipe and help the membrane along.

Half a Chime Later

Another half a chime later and the second membrane was in place. It was amazing to see that his clay made the ring harder to get in and that made the gadgeteer happy and believe that his bodily materials were useful as a good ring for sealant.

Switch was pleased with his sealant job, but he needed to test it. So leaving both the pipe and his box of materials where they rested the pycon ran back into his bedroom and located his waterskin, it was still heavy with water which was surprising, and it was exactly what he needed to test with. Holding the object tight he returned to the pipe and box. Uncorking the waterskin he took a pull from its contents, the water were horribly warm and off tasting, but it was hydrating and a liquid. And that is just what he needed. Recapping the skin Switch pushed his box closer to the pipe and leaned the object down against the box. The slant made it easier for Switch to test his seal and also to pour.

Uncapping his skin one more time Switch squeezed the contents into the pipe, hoping to the gods his sealing worked. Leaning back and watching the lower opening the pycon waited and watched. Switch was hoping to all the gods that the seal was good.

And he waited… And waited…

It was good! Switch jumped up and let out a yip of excitement before he poured the rest of the skin’s contents and pushed the pipe back to a standing position, water at the top. Sighing with relief he looked into the pipe, More water… He turned and looked at the window, there was no bit of precipitation outside and that made Switch frown, he needed more water, liquid… something.

Wait… When I get hot I do produce some sort of liquid… Maybe if I brought the pipe close to the hearth enough for me to get warm enough to sweat and then let it drop into the pipe I could fill it.

And so Switch pushed the pipe over onto its side and then rolled it over to the hearth, a small fire was within, it seemed that most of the labs have fires kept within and Switch was grateful at this point as he put the pipe back onto its small end and stood at the top of it, already feeling the heat from the fire.

Four Bells Later

Switch was drenched in liquid close in appearance to water and he had funneled the lower half of his body so it would slide down his body and make its way into his pipe. It took the last four bells to get his current shape and amount of liquid within the pipe. The seals were still holding and when Switch looked down the hole in his funnel shaped body the Pycon could see a fair amount of liquid.

“That is another I think. I am going to dry out.” He grumbled and flopped off the pipe. Once he was able to stand and work without trouble the gadgeteer grabbed the final ringed membrane and added his clay to it, creating the seal for it and once more found himself before the pipe and pressing the membrane into the apparatus, hoping to be quick about it so he can test the seal and then move the whole thing away and figure out how he could get the wire into place.

The membrane fit in nicely, the seal appeared to hold and Switch gently laid the object down and rolled it away from the hearth and back close to the box. He could hear the beads jostling and the water sloshing. It was music to his… Well, never mind that currently. The seal appeared to hold as he rolled it there was no leaking liquid. Switch was glad for that as he couldn’t afford to determine how he was going to patch a leak. With the three membranes in place, beads in place, and the piping ready Switch smiled and stared at it. He had drew a diagram last season before he decided to work on his project and knew he couldn’t make the bell shape on the one end without damaging the pipe and membranes within, and the wire on the other side was going to prove interesting to figure out.

Staring at the diagram Switch was concerned and then thought about it long and hard. Clay. He could use clay to form the bell shape. Or maybe when I embed it I can from the bell shape then. Yes yes. That will be best. He tapped his chin, the pycon took turns looking at the sealed edges of the membrane that the water was hidden behind, the diagram, and towards his room where the wire was "stored.

“Hmm. The wire needs to be added to this apparatus, but it shouldn’t be touching the membrane as it might puncture it. And I don’t want it touching the metal as that just wouldn’t do. Hmm, maybe that is something I will have to do in the end as well. When I am ready to embed it.” Switch nodded, “Yes yes… I will do it then.”

Hear No Evil Part V

Postby Switch on January 5th, 2015, 6:56 pm

17th of Winter 514AV

Switch had spent the last twelve days trying to figure out how to connect the tube to his body to the wire to his nexus… Nothing seemed to come to mind except clay, but which clay? That was the unnerving part. Clay in and of itself was a precious commodity for the Pycon, it was a food source and food was energy… Meaning clay was his energy source. Yet there was a second type of clay too that Switch was thinking about, that clay would hurt to remove, the pain might well knock the pycon out and any damage done would just revert when the clay was returned… That clay didn’t provide energy nor was it nutritionally of value… It was his body. Carrying the wire he had retrieved previously in the year from within the walls Switch returned to his pipe and his project.

Switch sighed and sat down; staring at the pipe, within he knew was water, beads, wire, and leather membranes. Both clay products were special to the pycon, yet both were of limited quantities, and one would prove to be quite dangerous to use… Maybe if I pull from my extremities the pain won’t be so bad and I can survive? Switch looked down at his body, there were his hands and his feet. His hands the Pycon knew were going to be required to putting the device into place, but his feet… Taking hold of one of them Switch tugged hard on it. Straining and grunting he was unable to pull or twist the foot.

There was no way he could physically tear off his own body apart if he knew it was going to be removed to make room for an object that he wanted to place close to his nexus. This is for science, the future of the world… For your survival. He grimaced and leaned down again, pulling hard he yelled in pain as the foot started to twist in a fashion that was going to twist off his foot. It was a slow process, but a process he needed to finish and soon if he was going to survive to do the second foot.

Six Bells Later…

The first of his feet was removed just mere ticks ago. The pain was excoriating and Switch set the foot down before him, close to the pipe. The second food had to come off as well. But first, Switch needed a breather and a reminder of what he was doing. The removal of my feet is to allow my body to accept the apparatus. Elsewise I am afraid it won’t remain within and my being will just reject it. Not allowing too much calmness to overtake his body the Pycon grabbed a hold of his other foot and once more pulled hard at it, twisting and yanking it away from his body. Switch watched as the clay stretched and warped, he could feel the outer skin of his body twisting and tearing into little fibers.

Gasping and hissing with pain the twisting and tearing intensified as the Pycon was determined to get the whole mess done and over with as quick as possible. Enough of this! He released his foot and picked up the wire. Wrapping it around his leg where the ‘ankle’ would be located he twisted it so the ends came around his leg to the front and he crossed them.

Breathing deeply, once… Twice… Three times… Switch pulled on the two ends of the wire, with its thin edge Switch could feel it slicing through his body and dropping to the ground. Switch didn’t feel much pain at first, just a dull tingling of the wire’s entry… Yet when he looked at the foot and groaned and the pain was immense, nearly knocking him out cold.

Stay awake… Stay awake! The gadgeteer forced himself to remain conscious as his hands shakily set down the wire, straightening it out as he knew it was going to be needed and picked up his feet. Squishing them together he walked on the poor stubs of his legs, the pain was insane but the pycon kept reminding himself that it was for the future…

Once the two feet were squished together Switch threw it on the ground and lowered the pipe down against it. Using what was left of his body the gadgeteer took the time to use the pipe to roll the clay of his being into a flat thin sheet.

Seven Chimes Later…

The pipe was resting against one end of the rolled out clay sheet, and Switch was exhausted with the hard work he had just done, the pain of his legs, the want to reattach, the forced denying of his limbs. He didn’t feel whole, yet he felt satisified, an odd and rather off feeling for the little man. It was time to finish this step, it was nearly done after all. Moving the pipe so it was offset on the side closest to the water by guess of a quarter of an inch, and on the other side was offset by double the smaller offset Switch started to roll up the lovely pipe and clay as tightly as he could. Once it was all rolled up Switch pressed the seam shut, watching as the clay of his body melded together on the pipe.

Something is odd about it though. It seems to be stiffening… He frowned and ignored that thought as he folded up the quarter inch overlap so it formed a flat side, stopping midway to place the wire into position so it was sealed into place by the clay but not touching the membrane within, but was close to it. With that end done Switch returned to the box he had the materials come to him in and brought it over to his apparatus. Laying it down Switch lowered the clay-coated pipe against it so the unworked side was up in the air and so the wire on the other side wasn’t going to be damaged. Placing both his hands on the clay, he could feel it has stiffened more. Grimacing Switch wasn’t sure what to make of that still and decided to just work faster. The clay could be drying out…

Using both hands he punched and pressed and manipulated the unworked into make a sort of horn shape, first he made a cone that tapered into the pipe’s opening and then the outer lip he has flared out more, hoping it would catch more sound and direct it inward. At least, that’s what I think the outer flappy piece of skin was on the body was there for. He grimaced as his body wanted to just cram the clay back into his body.

With the clay shaping done the Pycon stared at the object, it looked oddly like some child’s modeling clay shaped into a sad representation of their father’s tobacco pipe. Switch nodded though, The work is done. Now, for my body to quit agonizing about the pain of my feet, they are right there! Waiting to be returned, just be patient my body. Returning back to the other side where the wire rested Switch took hold of the apparatus with both hands, lifting it slowly and ensuring that he wasn’t squishing the cone shape on the other end.

Switch hesitated, the next step that needed to be done yet he wasn’t sure how to go about doing it. The nexus was designed not to be played with. I shouldn’t just be opening it up to the world and allowing it to be abused by my experimentations… But it must be done. This experiment must see to its end.

He frowned and decided it was easiest to force his body to tear itself apart from his nexus on one side, still leaving the nexus pretty covered and protected. The tearing was rather painful, yet it wasn’t as excruciating as he had expected, his fee hurt more than the dull throbbing he currently felt. His nexus could feel the rawness of the world around it, the sharpness of the air, the lack of protection… The heat, the condensation of his body… The lack of protection being the biggest notice.

Lifting the pipe Switch leaned down towards it, his body was eager to take it back, take back what was rightfully his… Yet the pycon wasn’t that eager to screw up his project. The wire was important, it needed to be placed just so… He had to concentrate, a small hand pinched out near his nexus and grabbed a hold of the wire, using that hand and his two actual hands the gadgeteer eased the contraption into the tear he had created in the side of his face. The wire was getting closer and his nexus wanted to recoil out of instinct, yet at the same time it could feel his body tugging at the clay he had forcefully removed from his body.

The urge to reunite his body, plus the meditative guidance of what he wanted to do allowed Switch to complete the daunting task. His body took hold of the stiffened clay, and felt as one, yet something wasn’t completely normal about the wholeness, there was a lack of completeness within. The wire connected with his nexus, the little hand smashing it into place hard and the pain shot through his nexus the gadgeteer dropped to the ground. Unaware that he had essentially knocked himself out.

Results: After speaking with Ink, here is the outcome of the experiment we arrived at!

The clay used as sealant doesn't hold, allowing small amounts of water to slip through where the ring meets the pipe. Both the initial connection and the reattachment of the clay are successful!

Post Script :
Keep in mind that unfired clay is a terrible sealant as when more water is added, the clay becomes more saturated. Also, while clay does "sweat" it is from the air around it not having enough moisture and that moisture being drawn out. This is not due to heat, as heat will simply dry out the clay by evaporation.

Otherwise interesting thread! Tearing himself apart in the name of science? Aperture much? haha
