A Thorny Revelation [Fallon]

One pat, two pat and Redd settled back onto her haunches, as she watched the visible pain flare across the woman’s facial features. The young wolf pretended to know all that the humans meant with the actions of their body movements, but that didn’t actually mean that she did understand. For so long, humans wore masks and their faces rarely showed emotion or the feelings that they felt within. Pain could easily be read however through signs of discomfort, a wince here, a grunt there and a hiss in between. Personally, Redd had seen more grunts rather than hisses, occasionally when people actually felt the need to express pain and not make a noise, it came in the form of a wince. Redwulf did all three and Redd could definitely tell that she was indeed in pain. Now that she had the reassurance that the stranger did not hold any ill will against her for the pain that she was currently in, the red wolf allowed pride to bloom within. She had kind of stood her ground with the woman, even though it took a red kind of rage to fester first.

Although she felt pride blooming, she couldn’t help but lift her head and push out her chest once Redwulf commented upon her bite. Her tongue dashed out to lick her nose before she gave a sharp nod to the stranger’s words. Today, the young wolf had indeed learned that not all humans were the same, that some were helpful, to an extent. Even though that help was strange on its own, but she had to admit, it did get through to her. The single golden hue followed the woman’s movements as she moved to pick up the cloak that Redd had discarded when she had shifted into wolf form. She watched the stranger’s movements disappear from her single view and she turned her nose downwards as she pondered the woman’s words. Redd knew that she did have a bite, but no one had ever commented upon it before. However, most of the time she had only used her fangs upon prey that she intended to eat. What she had mostly needed her fangs for, were for survival. Food and defence with the occasional attack movement.

A familiar scent caught her attention and she lifted her nose and angled her head slightly to the right so then her single eye could cover as much visibility as possible. There, standing close by a little thorny bush was the elusive and quick witted hare. Its little nose twitched as its ears flickered to and fro, and it was then when the young wolf focused upon the little thorns sticking out of the hare. In hind sight, she probably should have swiped her paw underneath the little animal’s body, try to take out its legs where there weren't any thorns. Both of the hare’s ears flickered towards the young wolf and she slowly lowered her body to the ground as her own ears flickered back against her head. She drew in a long slow breath, feeling the expansion of her lungs to accommodate this oxygen. Just as slowly, she let the breath go as she allowed her paws to feel the leaves and earth underneath them. She felt the sun flicker through the tree tops and the patchy sun warmed her coat slightly as she licked her nose once more, while she imaged the hare's blood coating it.

Another breath was soon close by, just as slow and just as steady before she exhaled and braced herself. It was all a forward movement from there, she pushed back upon her hind quarters; her back paws pushed against the ground and propelled her towards her target. Her front paws stretched out and helped her travelled forwards. The red wolf’s body bounded over the ground that separated the hare and her. Her hind paws dug into the ground once more, before she pounced, her right paw lashed out to swipe at the little animal’s body. However, the hare hopped with more speed and agility than the larger wolf did. It hopped left and bounded off into a borrow that led underground, a factor that Redd hadn’t really noticed before. She came to a sliding stop, her nose being pricked by some of the thorns of the bush. Redd backed away from the bush as her tongue lashed out to lick her stinging nose. While she had missed her prey, the wolf knew, that she would eventually escape from the life that she was currently living. Especially while Redwulf’s words rang inside her mind. ”Just don't be afraid to try either, because if you don't try then you'll never be able to give yourself that chance. So, never, ever, ever give up.”

All that Redd knew, was that she wanted that chance, so giving up was not an option.
