Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

A Matter of Self

22nd of Spring, 515 AV
Early Afternoon

Aoren held his hand steady as the tip of his paintbrush slid over the hills and valleys of his right hand. He held his palm turned upwards toward the sky as he drew upon the surface of his own body. He worked with single minded intensity as he did with most things. It was a quiet thing, painting. The simple act of drawing shapes of power upon a surface came with more ease to him than did many other mysteries. The world was somehow quieter when Aoren was drawing his Glyphs. It was easier to understand. It was not so vast a place that he could not swim against the current of turmoil’s river. As he etched the shape of his Focus onto the surface of his palm, he reflected on the thoughts that drifted lazily through his mind. He touched up the details of the Focus painted upon the surface of his right hand. When that was finished he waited a few minutes allowing the paint to dry.

Glyphing was a magic that he had not often used. It was not that he didn’t find what it was capable useful, merely that he had not been in many situations as of late where he could make use of it. It opened doors he didn’t know were closed. It made easier the task that he had in mind and he was glad that it was a tool he had in his possession. He switched his brush over to his right hand and began painting a Focus on the palm of his left. He took his time though he could certain paint the sigil much faster. He had no reason to. There was an almost meditative calm that came with going through the motions. When both Focus sigils were complete Aoren set his brush down gently looking them over diligently. Satisfied he folded his legs beneath him resting the backs of his hands upon his knees. Breathing evenly the Drykas concentrated on the task at hand. He turned his attention inward drawing upon the understanding of himself that he possessed.

Aoren was no stranger to meditation. He often used it to clear his head but not quite on this level. His focus had a purpose. He was not trying so much to clear himself of all his thoughts so much as he was giving those thoughts a purpose. Slowly he tuned out the outside world. In the Within of the Sanctuary he was surrounded by relatively silence but even that had the occasional interruption. Aoren concentrated. He found the piece of himself that was reserved only for him, the island that remained stable no matter how tumultuous the storm around it. It was calm. It was level. From there he directed his consciousness outward spreading throughout the whole of his own body.

Who was he?

A Matter of Self

It was a simple enough question. The answer was not, however. First and foremost he was Aoren. He was the last son of the Skycrowns. He was the only one that he knew of. But he was not alone. He had Caelum. The Ethaefal who despite their differences he had somehow fallen in love with him. He was a man. More than that however, Aoren was a fighter. He was a survivor who had stared into the face of death on several occasions and lived. He was a Drykas. He did not know all of what that meant but he was learning. Time would tell him who he was meant to be in his search for that aspect of himself. Aoren was a wizard. He was not an unskilled one either. Magic had become a focus of his life in a way that he’d never expected. He did not shy away from this revelation but embraced it.

What moved him?

Aoren’s attention turned away from less obvious things as he dug deeper into himself. He had set out on his journey from Syliras because he was searching for something. He had been searching for himself. He had been searching for his family. What he had not realized at the time was that notions of self and family were things he shaped. He controlled who he was. He decided who he loved, who he welcomed into the folds of his life as cherished ones. He had been blinded by his need for change simply for the sake of change. That path had yielded several consequences. Not all of them were bad. Not all of them were good either. They simply were. But with those lessons came the harsh reality of several facets of his character that startled him.

He liked power.

He enjoyed being able to control the flow of magic at his command. He liked being able to hurl bolts of lightning or command the wind as easily as breathing. He liked the insight that being able to peer into the hearts of others lent him.

He could readily take life.

He had killed. He had no reservations about taking the life of another when he was threatened. He would not do so if there was an alternative. He would readily seek out other means of finding peaceful solutions. If those solutions could not be found however, he had no qualms choosing his own life or the lives of those he loved over that which threatened them.

Aoren sifted through the aspects of his character bit by bit. He was ruthless when angered. He was cold to those he disliked. He liked to preach to others about the journey they walked while barely knowing his own. He could destroy just as easily as he could create. But most of all, he was afraid. He was afraid of being left in the dark, cold, alone, and lost without purpose.

Aoren opened his eyes looking down at his hands. His breathing was still steady. His heart beat evenly. He was troubled by what he found in himself but that was not all there was to him. Taking hold of his djed he drew it to his eyes focusing on his own aura. He looked at himself from a difference perspective. The dark black of a troubled mood stood out to him. It was not his mood that he searched for though. He looked closer. The mist of emotions cleared as he pushed beyond the outer most layer of his own aura peering into the depths of his own soul. He saw and felt his body.

He could feel the twitch of the muscles in his legs as they bore the weight of his body even seated. He looked upon them and he understood that they were there but on a more conscious level. Aoren could feel the blood flowing through his veins. It moved through him bringing life to every place that it went. The resolute strength of his bones resonated within him. He could even see the twisting and turning of his own djed. It was both strange and exhilarating to look at himself on such a different level. He was looking at himself from an outside perspective while being himself.

Were he not accustomed to tackling such abstract veins of thought he might have been completely boggled but such was not the case. In his gaze were the strands of his own djed. The flowing streams of power that told him exactly who he was. Aoren took hold of that. He grabbed onto the streams of his own existence, the rivers of life that gave him purpose. The strands slipped through his mental grasp as he reached for them on a difference magnitude. It was one thing to pull from a piece of himself and give it new meaning, it was quite another to take hold of all of himself in search of something more. Aoren reached forward tapping into the whole of his being seeking to grasp all of who he was.

In his mind he could see himself touching his hand to the streams of power that flowed throughout his body. The strands that touched every muscle, every bone, and every aspect of his being. Through his Auristics he saw those streams slow. It was as if his soul were pausing in its rigorous attention to who he was to really look Aoren in the eyes. He was staring into a clouded mirror peering into a hazy reflection of himself that he did not yet quite understand. The shifting of his own aura ceased. The world stilled and in that moment he was given a glimpse of his entire being. It was both beautiful and terrifying. The Focus Glyphs on his hands hummed with power as they concentrated the flow of his energy.

Suspended in that moment, Aoren was amazed. This was who he was. This was all that he had ever been and had the potential to be. His mouth parted slightly and what began as a sigh of awe turned into a yelp of pain as a surging spike of agony ripped through his body. Aoren’s vision went white as he saw stars. He lost his grip on his Auristics. All he could feel was pain. He crumpled into a ball writhing in pain as his consciousness faded and his world turned black.

Aoren gasped as breath filled his lungs. He coughed opening his eyes to find nothing but blackness. For a moment he panicked believing that he’d been rendered blind in a foolhardy errand. That abated as slowly his room came into focus. It was merely dark. He was on the floor of his room where he’d been before he passed out. His head ached. His eyes hurt. The muscles in his body felt weak as he struggled to sit up.

Rak’keli, give me strength.” His quiet prayer did not go unanswered. The gnosis gracing the right side of his face went from gently nudging him to opening up to him. He closed his eyes feeling the soothing coolness of Rak’keli’s gift flowing over his aching body. Sore muscles were made to relax. As he lay there giving himself to the touch of his goddess his head stopped pounding with pain and his vision stopped swimming. When the worst of the pain had been washed away, Aoren continued to lay there. His muscles still felt weak. He grunted willing his arms to move as he struggled to push himself up off the floor. The pain wasn’t there anymore but he shook as he fought the fatigue that clung to him. He was barely able to push himself up before right arm gave out and he fell back to the floor. The air rushed out of his lungs leaving him panting for breath. Weakly, Aoren looked up to the palm of his right hand. The Focus glyph was gone.

Aoren lay there unable to find the strength to move as exhaustion stole over him. His eyes drooped until finally he slipped back into unconsciousness. Formless thoughts drifted across Aoren’s mind as he lay there dreaming. The memories of his youth came to him in snippets followed by more recent memories. He saw Caelum’s face in the black void of his mind. He saw Xira and Kavala. He saw Adrien. It was hard to tell whether or not he was dreaming or walking the halls of the Chavi. Nevertheless he drifted between pseudo-awareness and complete blackness.

When next he awoke it was not so abruptly. He drew in a deeper breath coughing slightly. He was not as disoriented as he found the means to push himself up off the floor. Aoren wearily came to a kneeling position. With a pained grunt he managed to stand wobbling on his feet for a moment. He took a step. The dizziness that followed nearly sent him crashing back down to the floor. He stumbled until he fell back against the edge of his bed. He let himself fall backward onto the mattress. Even standing had taken it out of him.

He closed his eyes pushing aside his weariness. Something came to the forefront of his awareness then. Lingering on the edges of his mind was finer awareness of his full self that had not been there before. He could feel the weight of his body. He could pinpoint the strength in his muscles flowing over the sturdiness of his bones. He possessed only the most fleeting grasp on this awareness but there it was. Aoren closed his eyes a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

He’d done it. All that was left to do was to continue opening the door that he’d unlocked.

Overgiving :
As a result of Aoren unlocking his Flux, Aoren will suffer from mild overgiving. From the 22nd until the 29th of Spring 515AV, Aoren will be prone to sudden, fleeting migraines. While they'll be a nuisance, the migraines will not disrupt his capacity to reason, speak, or otherwise conduct daily affairs.

Note: I was not familiar with Glyphing before this, now I am! I also took his passing out as a big hint that he'd overgiven. I have little experience with giving out injuries too, so I hope the kind of overgiving I have 'rewarded' is in line with what you intended. Of course, I did my research and I think this is about right, but if you think I am being too harsh or too gentle, please let me know!

If you have any questions, concerns, remarks, or comments regarding the grade, please send me a PM and we can work something out.
