Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Late Afternoon

Aoren walked quietly along the road to Alements. It was the day after Caelum’s celebration commemorating the grand opening of his tavern. He had congratulated the Ethaefal with the gift of a puppy. The pup was a happy one that had thus far basked in the love and affection to be found in the arms of his lover. Lillis was no less attentive to the needs of the new addition to their household. At his side padded the large midnight black hound that was ever his shadow. Isikai presence comforted Aoren on a level that few others could match. The canine had been with him for only a relatively short time in the Drykas man’s life but in that time the two had been through much. They had crossed entire regions together. They had faced down a horde of Yukmen together. With Isikai by his side they had tackled thugs beating up innocent bystanders on East Street of Zeltiva. They had faced deranged wizards. They had learned of things not privileged to the normal minds of men and women.

He rest one hand atop the dog’s head as he walked scratching behind one ear. Isikai was more than just a dog to Aoren. He was a friend and companion. Such thoughts had occupied his mind quite frequently as of late. His thinking had turned toward the future he was to make for himself in Riverfall. He and Caelum were closer than he would have imagined. They had their struggles like anyone else. There was a rough patch here or there but they pressed forward through them. The Ethaefal was a cornerstone of his life that he wanted to make an even bigger part than he already was. To that end he was headed toward Alements to ask Caelum if his schedule was clear for the evening. Aoren wanted to spend time with his lover. It had been several days since they had had a moment alone together.

The Drykas walked wearing only a brown leather vest, his torso bare beneath it in the warm spring air. The brown cotton pants and travel worn boots on his feet gave him a very earthy appearance. Aoren had been spending much time in the daylight throughout the season. His skin was tanned bringing to the forefront one of the more recent additions to his physical features, the windmarks that wound around the upper portion of the right side of his torso and arm. An elaborate pattern it told the story of who Aoren was both as himself and in relation to the family he did not quite know. Not yet at least. In one hand he carried the wooden quarterstaff that had seen just as many roads as he had.

His mood was pleasant. His hopes were high for the evening. He was looking forward to the remainder of the day.

As he rounded the corner going to the rear entrance of the Alements tavern he came to a stop. There was someone standing there. A person that Aoren most certainly did not want to see. Isikai came to a stop next to Aoren. The dog hunched up growling low, his fur beginning to stand on end. The Drykas Seer rest a hand upon the back of the dog’s neck even as the uneasiness seeped its way into his bones. He gripped his quarterstaff a bit more tightly. His eyes narrowed even as she had her back turned to him.

Evangeline.

The strange girl with bone jarring strength. Given their last encounter, Aoren thought it unwise to catch this particular individual by surprise.

Good afternoon.

The time was coming soon, when Evalin would set out toward the city of Zeltiva on an errand for both herself and Caelum. It brought many thoughts to her mind, of what was to come of her on that trip. It also brought one fact to the forefront of her mind with Jarring force. Evalin had now spent more time in this one city than she had in nearly any other before her time in Zinrah, and in a way Evalin did not believe she should count that time either given she was caged for half of it. It was strange then, that for song long she had remained here in this place. Why was that really...?

The crowds in the Alements were busy as usual, but then she had arrived earlier than was typical for her. There was some work to be done that could not wait for much longer, as she would be leaving for a time, and she did not wish to leave anything undone or unaccounted for. Caelum believed that she was his personal assistant, and in many ways he was correct, however, there was always another side to the coin. He had grown used to her presence, but Evalin knew the truth. She was not there for him, or for anyone in this place. Nothing chained her here. Nothing was making her stay, and yet she did. it was frustratingly annoying, and as she leaned against the back door looking out aimlessly at the city the Immortal sighed.

Evalin had recently found something interesting, that she had never thought to try before. It was popular within most regions she visited, but never desired to try it for herself. This day, however, a new desire had come over her and without thinking too much on it she had bought was she required and now tried it for herself. In her hands she held a simple wooden pipe, one easily purchased in the city and in it was what was recommended to her. A specific type of tobacco that was apparently popular to to this region. As she sucked in the smoke she noticed an odd taste at the back of her throat, but just as quickly as she noticed it the sensation was gone and she was forced to expel the now used smoke and breath in another gasp to try and find that sensation again. Begin as she was undead such things as tobacco, or any drug really, had no real affect on her, but the act of smoking itself was surprisingly entertaining.

As she heard the dogs growl, and a familiar voice offer her greetings. Looking back over her shoulder Evalin pulled in another breath of the smoke, letting it out slowly as she turned and leaned her back against the door frame now.

"Well now, if it isn't the child who cannot keep his nose out of where it doesn't belong." Today Evalin was in full adult form, dressed in robes of black with various pockets for storing this or that. Straight raven hair fell down past her shoulders, draped over twin scarves that hung down her front, each with a carved wooden head in the shape of a serpents scull, their jewel eyes gleaming in the light.

Red eyes looked the man up and down as she chewed on the mouthpiece of the pipe, seeming in thought for a tick or two before she pulled in another breath and released it from her nose this time, "What brings you here this evening boy?"

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

[Alements] Echo of Yesterday

She was different from before. Her form was older but the unnerving chill that clung to the air around her was the same. As were the eyes. Red like the color of spilled blood before it had gone dark. A pang of irritation stabbed through Aoren as she regarded him with open disdain. He narrowed his eyes.

Sharps words from the walking dead. I’d say I’m hurt but your words don’t quite carry the same sting as your flare for dramatic indignation.” Aoren couldn’t place it. He knew that he should not bait this...this creature on but something about her got under his skin. He already had a healthy dislike for Nuit. The ritual of this woman’s death and rebirth as one played in his mind for several hours the day after they’d met. Her volatile reaction to his brief glimpse into the depths of her memories had been unexpected. It had been terrifying if he was being completely honest. He hadn’t expected such raw strength from a form so small but given the shape she wore now, he wondered if she didn’t possess more gifts that he was as of yet unaware of. A fact he would soon remedy if he could. Drawing upon his djed he moved the flow of it to his eyes. In a matter of moments the world was opened to him in a way that went beyond the mundane.

If you must know, I was looking for Caelum. However it seems fate has seen fit to vex me with your presence again.” Isikai let out a louder growl. Aoren kept his hand steady on the dog’s head. He funneled his djed fueled vision that he would focus only on Evangeline, Evalin as she was calling herself these days. He’d heard her name a few times around Alements. He was none too pleased when he’d grown wind of her taking up a position of employment in his lover’s establishment. But it was Caelum’s business and though it displeased Aoren, it was not his place to push the Ethaefal toward business decisions based on his own discomfort.

Evalin’s aura came into focus. Whether it was because he was more practiced with the art of Auristics or simply because he knew what to expect this time, he was not overwhelmed by it. On the surface he could discern very little about the woman. The unnatural chill that permeated everything about her grew more pressing. Her aura felt...heavy. With what? He could only guess at. Still, he kept his gaze trained on her watching for signs of more pressing hostility. Barbed words were one thing the intent to act upon them was another.

I would ask what your business is at Alements but then, I already know the answer to that. So I will ask instead, why are you in Riverfall?” There was no abundance of welcome for Nuit in the city of the Akalak. To date, Aoren had only encountered a few of their kind and generally speaking they were not overly welcome anywhere. Body snatchers and corpse stealers, husks clinging to life for one reason or another, he had only enough tolerance for them to be mildly civil on most occasions. He rolled his quarterstaff into the crook of his shoulder folding his arms over his chest.

You can either tell me outright or I can find out myself.” Was it a smart move on his part to stand in front of Evalin so? No. No it wasn’t. With the small taste of her strength that he’d been given she could likely tear one of his limbs off if she chose. Still, he was not a coward and he refused to spend his time at Alements, a place that should feel like a home for him, ducking his head and looking over his shoulder for fear of crossing paths with her.
