Already it has been a couple days since Karte’s fated visit. It had already been a couple days since she was suggested, although a better word for it would be ‘ordered but suggested is a more pleasant term, that she start acting like the Master whose status she had acquired. The golden ring on her finger meant more responsibility, higher expectations, and a few new apprentices and wizards assigned for her to watch over. Each came with their own ambitions and projects of their own, their own wishes, hopes, and dreams, and Rayage was meant to lead them. To oversee their work, and counsel them on their needs if it comes down to it.

The responsibility of overseeing both wizards and apprentices, having them under her direct supervision, was new. She had little experience in leadership and had only known how to conduct a classroom due to her years teaching at the University. Not only was she responsible for the wizards put in her charge and the apprentices, but she also needed to move her own work forward. She needed to progress on her own project, Snakebite. Since progress had been so slow, an idea came to her, an idea in which she could get her project to move just a bit faster… Ask the others in her charge to work on it with her. Little did the nuit know that this decision would be her first mistake, and one of many to come.

It had been a long time since the nuit had been in charge of anything but herself. It felt weird, and she was a little nervous truth be told. Giving up some of her control over the experiment and handing the menial parts to others, to hopeful apprentices and other wizards. It was a bigger and more ambitious project, and she knew that but the perfectionism of her procedure and Alchemy could not be seamlessly cast upon those below her. It made a delicate project, such as this, both, at the same time, easier and harder. She had the support of many other wizards, but at the same time she could not oversee ALL the transmutations, and in doing so would slow down the steady work they all have been progressing towards.

More and more papers filed to her desk by messenger automations. It seemed that her lab door never was properly shut before another one came buzzing in. Notes from the alchemists she had asked to work on the project with her. Notes from the apprentices. Notes from wizards detailing their own work and formulas. It was all so exhausting, an endless stream of papers. She did not come to Sahova to write books. She did not come to Sahova to read the dibble of lesser alchemists. She did not come to Sahova to be trapped at her desk scanning the notes for anything of relevance. She came to Sahova to research and understand Life itself. She came to the island of the dead to understand life… what a true piece of work the wizard names Rayage must be.
