[Syliran Archives] Leaderology Pt 1

Postby Vizayas on June 11th, 2015, 4:39 am

Morning Winter 51st 514
Vizayas was in the Syliran Archives. He had just given his name and rank, and he was given permission to access the archives to look for a book that his patron had told him about. He was told to look for 'Leaderology' in the philosophy wing, and that he couldn't find it in the general section. He walked down the dimly lit halls that were somewhat cooler due to the morning air outside, his footsteps echoing in such a manner that he could guide himself with his eyes closed if he followed the reverberations that echoed well enough for him to imagine this place in his mind with some modicum of detail. Glancing around, he could tell that this place was heavily secure - as it should be. He liked to think of information as one of the most powerful forces after all. It would make sense for the knights to protect their books.

In the philosophy wing, there were books on gods and goddesses, and philosophies on many different lifestyles or disciplines. All of the books were tempting for him to pull out and read as he walked, with titles such as 'Priskil's Light' and 'Purity for Yahal' standing out to him as he walked further down the hall of the archive. They were organized by letters, and he followed the letters to find the book he was looking for. Then, he came across the section for L. The book he wanted was called 'Leaderology' and had a lot of information on, he guessed and was told, leading.

Tracing his finger along the many dusty old books in the section, he sorted through the alphabetized section and finally found what he was looking for. It was a frayed, heavily worn book threatening to buckle and fall apart as the old parchment clung to the last of its years. However, right next to it happened to be a version with much more life in the cover, a thin veneer of dust covering the surface. He pushed the old book back in, and tugged on the newer copy to pull it free from the shelf. He looked over the intricate spiral pattern on the binding, a deep blue that stood out in contrast to the dark brown leather of the book.

Vizayas left the hall, looking around until he found a large table well lit by a large candle. There was another man across from him, sitting near the edge opposite to where he was standing. The man looked old and grizzled, tough and strong. He seemed to be one of the knights, definitely not a squire. Vizayas judged that there would be no problem reading here, and pulled out an old wooden chair and sat upon it, placing the book on the table in front of him. There was no response from the man who sat there, quietly reading a book that he seemed very interested in. Taking that as an approval to get started, Vizayas carefully opened the book to the very first page.

Leaderology, Faith In Yourself And Others
A guide written by professor S.

The author's name wasn't completed, and Vizayas guessed that the original text must have been missing a name as well. The name of the book itself seemed strange, 'Leaderology' didn't seem like a real word to him, but it reminded him of fields of study he had heard about such as theology or geology. Vizayas turned to the next page, eyes gazing upon it. It was a note on the author, explaining that he was a professor from Zeltiva and had a hand in politics there for a time. Following this precarious note, Vizayas turned the page and found the meat of the book beginning to take shape. He dove into the text and began to scrutinize every word with fleeting interest. As his eyes were glancing over the dusty text, he could tell that the author was very straight and to the point. The book went on to explain the basics of what a leader is and is not.

A leader is a strong, charismatic individual capable of influencing others to work together for a common cause through means of respect, integrity, discipline, awareness, and strategic oversight. He is not one who motivates exclusively with fear, blackmail, or bribery. To do such things is to fail in your facade as someone to respect.

Strength, charisma, respect? Vizayas knew he had very little of these. He was a wizard, and it was a good day if someone so much as spoke to him, let alone respected him. It was also good to know that he had to strive to be something much like his superiors, but he wasn't quite sure where to start. Then, the book went on to reference what a knight is not. Fear, blackmail, bribery. Avoid these things? Why? He could understand blackmail, as it was quite evil and possibly frowned upon in many parts of the world. Fear and bribery however, seemed like tools. He wasn't sure if he agreed with what the author had to say on that subject entirely, but he did think that it was possible these concepts could ruin the way other people thought of you if abused. He continued to read.

Leaderology

Postby Vizayas on June 11th, 2015, 4:41 am

This manual will help to guide you in the right direction, but know that there is no substitute for experience in the field. Apply what you have learned, and learn what does and doesn't work for yourself and those you lead. Talk to other leaders, or those you follow about leading. You will not become one of the greatest leaders of our time overnight by simply reading a book.

Completely understandable. Book knowledge is best when complimented with experience, after all. You'd have to be really sheltered to think otherwise, which Vizayas was as a child, not that he didn't eventually figure this out for himself. He hoped that reading this would give him some insight as to how things worked, and he wasn't far off course. It would give him an idea as to what to do in a situation where a leadership role is called for, at the very least. The page ended there, so he flipped to the next page and started from the top.

This may sound like idle lunacy, but leadership is much like a religion. A religion of self, a religion of those around you. If you are devout, others will follow you just as you follow yourself. It can be very rewarding, but also potentially blinding. One should never let faith blind them, just as they should not let the power that comes with leadership blind them.

Leadership is like a religion? He was close to Rhaus, but he was no priest. Was the author implying that leaders became much like gods? He did warn that he sounds like a lunatic when he says it, so Vizayas understood that as a cue to think outside the box. A god is a leader in a sense, they do have followers, and they do seem to guide them. Followers worship the ground that the god stands on, so it's not surprising to think that revelry in the name of a great leader is comparable.

A loud thwomp echoed through the room as the knight at the end of the table closed the book he was reading, the miniscule amounts of air that rushed out making an audible tone that Vizayas could hear. The knight stood, and Vizayas looked up from his book as the man began to walk and leave the philosophy wing, shooting Vizayas a stern nod. Vizayas smiled at the knight in response, but no words were exchanged. Listening to the footsteps as they stomped away, he buried himself back into the book he was reading.

Understanding how to utilize the tools that you learn about in this book or through experience to motivate and influence those around you can be quite difficult. To lead is one of the most daunting undertakings one can attempt, and can be just as punishing as it is rewarding on one's mind and reputation. At first, you should be focusing on basic concepts such as relations and leading by example or following in the footsteps of someone already leading you.

Tools? The book claimed that there was a heavy focus on utilizing 'tools' to lead. Relationships, leading by example? Those must be a couple of the tools the book was referencing. However, what really stood out was the tidbit where leadership is as punishing as it is rewarding on the mind. His reputation was already tarnished due to his magic, and he didn't like the idea of having his mind weighed down by the burden of leading. It seemed like something he would have to think about for a time.

Leaderology

Vizayas pulled himself away from the book and sat back in his chair lazily, closing his eyes and bringing up his hands to his forehead, rubbing his temples as he processed everything the book had been telling him up until now. He had to compliment his studies with experience in the field, and get others to idolize him. He assumed the latter could possibly be accomplished by performing some great deed or act, not that he was anything special enough to have any measure of success in such a thing. He was quite weak, after all. Vizayas relaxed himself, and leaned forward to keep reading.

You must be a follower for a time before you can truly learn to lead. You are better off joining at the bottom and working your way up to learn from that point of view than you are jumping to the top of the pyramid and scrambling to understand everything. Observe how others lead you, and take note of their actions while leading those around you to better adjust to your leader's goal.

Now this was interesting. The book claimed that being a follower to another could be quite helpful and enlightening, and it made sense that he wouldn't yet know what to do with all that power if he were given a higher position in the order. He could only learn by watching, and emulating. It made perfect sense. He would surely keep an eye on how other knights lead by keeping an eye on them.

Then, Vizayas caught the sound of more footsteps echoing through the wing. He could hear the clanking of metal on metal, and he knew at that instant that It was one of the guards that secured the area. "Vizayas." A soft yet demanding voice came. He peeled himself away from his book, giving the knight a questioning gaze. "Your patron Ser Ivan requests your presence." Ivan had need of him? "Yes, Ser!" Vizayas responded, shutting the book and picking it up. He stood from his seat, pushing it in to make it tidy as he walked over to the bookshelf where he had gotten his book and pushed it back in. He would surely continue reading this as soon as he had the chance, but there were apparently more pressing matters.

The knight waited for him, and then escorted him out. As he walked through the library, he kept thinking about what the book had told him, blankly staring forward as he walked. Thinking about it more thoroughly, he was getting some ideas about how to better lead. He reached he entrance to the archives rather quickly, and Ser Ivan Callager was waiting for him there. With a roll of his head, Ivan indicated for Vizayas to follow.

"Sorry to pull you from your studies on such short notice, but there's a drill being organized tonight that I thought you might be interested in. I'm going to get you prepared and ready." Ivan seemed unusually chipper, and Vizayas had no idea what the man have up his sleeve.

"What's the drill about?" Vizayas asked.

"I can't tell you that until everyone's together." He said. Vizayas knew then that this was going to be a very long day.
