The Song of the Otani

3rd of Summer 515av
The Anchorage Flotilla
Just After Midday

An erruption of laughter temporarily broke over the humming chatter as all Svefra aboard the Pavilar moored in the outer cluster of ships at the Anchorgae Flotilla, made merry with ale and games of dice - though it was only half a bell past mid-day and the ale was already aflow. Kai had no idea whose party this was, but upon his passing along nearby Casinors that made up the 'streets' of the Anchorage Flotilla he could not forego the invitation they hollered to join them.
Syna's gleam was already reaching stiflingly hot temperatures despite the summer season only just starting and the opportunity to quench his parched tongue with a strong pint of ale was an offer he simply couldn't refuse. Most of the Svefra here were of the same pod, yet Kai was not the only stranger present. As their race are well known for their sociability and parties, it was not uncommon for them to welcome anyone aboard their ship if they came with the spirit to drink - and Kai was always in the mood for drink.
With his feet resting on an upturned bucket, his rump nestled on the wooden side of the Pavilar, Kai sat hunched over a hand of five cards. A table was positioned just in front of him cluttered with drinks, snacks, bartering chips and dice and was accompanied by another three of his kin seated around the sun-beaten table - all strangers but friends in the making, he was sure.
With his attention being momentarily taken by the boisterously laughing group to his right, Kai's interest was suddenly peeked back to the group he was sat with when he heard the older man seated just opposite him call out about Otani. Never having met one, Kai had only heard snippets of stories, but he knew they were the messengers and workers of Laviku and were a graciously beautiful race that Kai remained in awe of. "What's this about the Otani? You seen a real live one 'round these parts old man?"
As the others around the table continued to take their turns in the game of cards and dice, one native to their culture, Kai's sapphire gaze was firmly locked on the elder Svefra adjacent to him. The man was past his prime by a good few years, his hair with speckles of grey through blonde. Scratching his bushy, yet well-kept beard that looked to be flecked with ash, he grunted, "'Course I 'ave! Ain't no one ever not seen one, the Otani are everywhere, doin' the work of the God of the Oceans. A fickle bunch, but to be respected for sure."
Kai's heart near fluttered out of his chest as his mind began to reel. Otani so close by? He had to go and find it, maybe it would know what pod the markings on his pendant hail from, maybe it would know where to find them - that is, if they were still alive. Despite every muscle in his body clenching in anticipation and as the urgent drive to find answers re-awakened, the young Svefra was proud of his calm and collected composure at hearing the news.
Feining slight disinterested in the matter Kai decided to try and get as much information about the Otani as possible, without arousing the suspicions of the group for fear they would run a mockery of him and tell him half-truths of the Otani. If he was going to search for them, he should at least know what to prepare himself for. "Oh aye, heard a bit of 'em from my Lia as a young'n. Though, every story told draws different truths. What's your truths on 'em then?"
Attempting to press his question as casually as possible to the blonde opposite him, aflicker of a smile ghosted across the bleached headed Svefra's lips as he sussed Kai's peeked interest. Though he also noticed that the boy wanted to keep his interest quiet. The middle-aged Svefra was kind enough to oblige the young Svefra with offers of telling his tales - alas though, the Svefra were a race of barterers, "And what am I gunna get in return for givin' ye my stories young'n?"
Drat! His keen interest in the matter had been made by his elder. Although he asked for something in return at least the old geezer was kind enough not to arouse the jesting of the two middle-aged Svefra seated either side of him. Tossing a bartering chip into the middle of the table and rolling the dice, playing his turn the young Svefra smiled a cheeky grin, "The good feel'n of enlightening and passin' on the tales of our people to a good look'n young'n like me... And I'll save ye the walk to fetch more ale, as I see your cup is empty"
Kai grinned as charmingly as he could, attempting to win the favour of the elder with his smile and offer of more alcohol. The two seated at either side of the young smiling Svefra oblivious as they played out their turns, happily munching and drinking away.
The mid-aged "old" man croaked a hearty laugh after a few minutes squinting at the young grinning Svefra, clearly deliberating disappointing him, yet not able to find it in his good heart to do so, "Aye alright then, throw in an SM or two, refill my cup with ale and I'll regail you with an 'old' man's story," Despite a flutter of excitment lurching through his gut, Kai attempted to restrain himself from leaping to his feet and bounding down the ship as he snatched up the elder's empty tin cup.
Swiftly walking over to the bow of the Pavilar almost 80ft in length, an open barrel of ale sat next to a long table full of sandwhiches, cheeses, fruits, fish and other sea delectabes - When hosting a party or hour of meriment the Svefra went all out. Hastily dunking the tin cup into the barrel filling it to the brim, Kai nabbed a sandwich or two from the near by table for good measure. Taking near twice the length of his normal strides on the way back to the games table at the other far end of the ship, he nearly spilt the precious ale in the process - luckily though he returned with not a drop lost.

The Song of the Otani

Leaning over the blonde Svefra's shoulder, Kai carefully placed the tin cup brimming with fresh ale next to the man's large pile of bartering chips and set down the sandwichs he had also brought along for extra encouragement. Kai flicked the older Svefra a broad cheesy grin - who responded with an open palm, awaiting that SM or two as part of the deal. Kai chuckled giving the blonde Svefra a wink and a smile, "Nope, get half now and when I'm satisfied you gave me the whole truths of everything you know of the Otani - then ye get your mizas." Which was simply responded with a shrug from the blonde man as if to say 'Can't blame a guy for trying'.
Kai was proud of himself for sticking to his guns as it were and as Kai went to seat himself back at his post across the table, found that the bucket he had been using as a foot stool had vanished. Shrugging to himself as it was not uncommon among the Svefra for others to pick up something when it was not in use by another. So Kai simply hopped his rump back onto the wooden side of the Pavilar, swinging his feet freely, kicking the boats wooden side in a rhythmic drumming as his sapphire gaze peered at his hand of 5 cards nonchalantly. Though inside he was abuzz and itching for the man to begin his tale as the old Svefra took his time taking a long swing from his tin cup and wolfing down the first sandwich Kai had brought him - hence the swinging of his feet in boiling impatience.
The other two sat with them at the table playing the game of cards and dice quietly joked together, disinterested in the stories of Otani of which they probably already knew everything about. Sipping his ale once more the old gritter finally cleared his throat noisily, before licking his lips and peering up at Kai with a stern gaze that would make anyone frightened to be caught not paying avid attention to the man. Kai was shocked however, when it was not words of wisdom that flowed from his lips, but a song sung in a deep, rough sea-man's voice. It's melody as choppy as one would find the waves of the Suvan, yet upbeat and pleasant, if not shorter than expected.

*

"They come from the God of oceans, sea and spray,
From the ages of water, over full in their day.
If marked by the creator, they come to play games,
Or warn of storm and turmoil, respect they have gained.
Loyal to Laviku, only to him through and through,
With command over his beasts, his will they do.
Their story, all they have done,
To be passed through the notes of a song."

Without so much as pausing after his little spout of song, the old Svefra continued to elaborate on what it stood for, "This is a verse from the song of the Otani, sung down through the ages - though I bet my voice ain't as purdy as most. It tells us of how old the Otani are, rumour has it they were about when the world was filled with oceans - before they all disappeared.
Otani come to those who bear the mark of our God Laviku, bein' all children of the Ocean y'know, we are all his servants and so share a sorta kinship they trust. Be warned though young'n for they are shapeshifters, changin' their faces, often a speckle in the waves one chime or a shark in the deep the next. Fickle as they come, like young whippersnappers they got the thin focus of a stryker, so if ya got questions or want of a conversation, ye be lookin' in the wrong place -"

Entranced and hooked on every word the man spoke, Kai's heart sunk slightly at the news that their attention spans were short, it might prove difficult to get any sort of answers out of them. Yet to hear that they lived a long time was a leaf of hope that Kai clung on to. If they lived a long time they must know every Svefra to ever have lived - if that was even remotely true, it would bode well for Kai's search for his parentage.
"Unless Laviku commands them himself, they ain't serious and like all Svefra cause a bit'o mischief around the seas - all in good fun mind. Though with command of Laviku's beast - the leviathan - they have the power to destroy any ship that sails the waters. Though as one of Laviku's children if tribute to our God is paid, we don't have much to fear from the sea fair'n creatures."
Appearing finished with his tale the greying Svefra turned to his ale and last sandwich, that stern gaze firmly rested upon Kai, a small smile etched across his lips at the overwhelmed look on the young Svefra's face as he was clearly absorbing all the information.

The Song of the Otani

After taking a good long moment to sift through everything he had just learned about the Otani, Kai's mind suddenly playing catch up as he realised there was more the old man wasn't telling him, "They have the power to sink ships 'n change their form, yet they are not Gods - just his messengers - that means they can't be impervious to death. Every creature has a weakness."
A pair of blonde eye brows raised in surprise at the young Svefra's keen deduction and a broad smile plastered his weathered face, "Aye young'n, that be right. Can't slip anything by that burn'n brain of yours eh?" Kai simply watched the old Svefra in anticipation, fixing a stern gaze of his own upon the man to prompt him to stick to the deal, "Full truth's. That was the bargain struck, not a miza til then."
Waving a hand dismissively, the old Svefra croaked a chuckle, "Aye alright, alright. It be true what you say, they ain't Gods themselves, so ofcourse can be killed by mortal man. Don't be fool'n yourself if you think ordinary weapons or those of magic be any good - they ain't. Water, that's their weakness. Keep 'em out of water for only a few bells and they die as any other. Or poison, no creature can live injest'n a bit'o poison neither."
Leaving the young Svefra to mull over everything and process it all, the old man threw the dice and played his turn in the game as it came about once more. Anxious to get his mizas as promised, the man was restrained enough to let the young Svefra dwell on his new found knowledge. Kai's sapphire gaze following the hands of the others around the table as they threw in bartering chips to the center, rolling dice, drank ale - yet his mind was a far. Then seemingly out of the blue he looked up to the old Svefra adjacent to him, who had been watching him keenly, "What do they like?"
Confusion broke across the old man's weathered features, "Wha?"
Kai smiled kindly and repeated his question with a little more explanation, "What do they like? What games do they like to play? Do they like stories, or music or songs? What do they like? What attracts them?"
Finally as the puzzle was finally unvailed, understanding washed over the man's face as he suddenly realised why Kai had been so interested in hearing about the Otani. He almost laughed out loud as the obvious nature of the boy's questions ran home that had previously escaped him until now. Shaking his head, a warm smile curled his lips as he peered up at Kai with renewed vision of the boy's character - a smart lad, "Music and songs, they are the sea's seductresses. They are the musicians of the oceans."
Suddenly a broad toothy grin spread across the young Svefra's rugged features, beaming with excitement he could not contain. Digging into his pant pockets, sticking out his tongue a little at the effort of grasping the coins in his pocket while sitting down, he finally picked out 2 silver mizas between his thumb and forefinger."As promised, a couple of silver for tales well told," Kai gave a wink and flipped the coins over to the old Svefra who beamed almost as happily as Kai himself, "Happy to be of service lad. Any time you need to know more of anything Svefra or Suvan - I'm your man,"
Leaping off the wooden side of the Pavilar and onto the deck, Kai excused himself from the game of cards and dice, giving his apologies to the two middle aged Svefra who had been uninterested in the tales of the Otani, turning once more to the blonde Svefra sipping his ale, "I thank you. Who do I ask for if I find the need to be regailed by the stories of an 'old' man?"
The Svefra with blonde hair flecked with grey grinned a toothy grin, extending his hand in formal introduction, "Tyvic Whitewave, brother of Ceona Whitewave" Kai almost fell where he stood as he clasped the extended hand. He had been calling the brother of the leader of The Anchorage Flotilla an old man all this time?! Clearly seeing the faint impression of embarrassment and horror upon Kai's face, Tyvic boomed a hearty laugh, "Don't think nothin' of it young'n. It was refreshin' not bein' treated any different,"
Cheeks a blush, Kai scratched the back of his head clearing his throat uncomfortably as he chuckled, "Aye spot the newbie to the North Sea ae? I appreciate your kindness in indulging me with your knowledge." Tyvic Whitewave suddenly grew serious, with a warning in his tone, "You be careful out there laddy."
Reflecting Tyvic's seriousness Kai nodded with his thanks and said his farewells. Near running from the party on the strange Pavilar Kai leapt from boat to boat, racing to his own Casinor moored not far away. Tyvic shook his head, he knew full well where Kai was headed. He was headed out into the Suvan. He was headed out to search for an Otani.
