Summer 37, 515 AV - Mithryn Outpost
Continued from: Music for the Road

As they arrived at Mithryn Outpost, Sayana reined in her horse to a stop. As she looked around, it seemed just as drab and rural as it had been when she last visited. Perhaps little communities like this never changed, nor had any real life to them. Hopefully she’d be able to spark at least a little life in it today. When she asked Ser Kevith if she could take the day off from performing at the Rearing Stallion, he had agreed upon one condition. The old ex-knight wanted Sayana to advertise the tavern and encourage the people of Mithryn Outpost to visit Syliras more often. It seemed like a fair enough request particularly since Kayuqtuq was also a performer at the Rearing Stallion.

The Eypharian looked about but it was hard to find a good place to perform. The streets were narrow and despite it being a small community, it was still too large for everyone to be within earshot. Suddenly she had an idea. “Let’s split up and we’ll be able to cover more ground that way,” she called to Kayuqtuq. With hardly a glance back, Sayana spurred her horse into a trot down the narrow streets to find a good place to set up.

The marketplace was busier than most of the streets so she carved out a little section for herself and dismounted. She quickly tended to her horse, mostly just tying it up since there wasn’t a good place for water or space to graze. It would have to do for now. The Eypharian then got out her finger cymbals and placed them on her high hands. Ching-a-ling-a-ling. She chimed the little cymbal several times in attempt to get people’s attention.

However, as soon as a few people began to turn, she realized she had merely worn basic beige pants and a red top. Hardly the thing to be dancing in. Perhaps she’d have to get more creative this time. The Eypharian started with a basic rhythm on the finger cymbals, one that she could consistently keep going, and started bounce gently to the beat. There was an earthier feel to this one and as she tapped her feet and twisted her shoulders, she slowly moved in a circle.

As people gathered to watch she decided to try something fancier. Sayana did a quick spin on the spot and then immediately launched herself into a cartwheel. It was harder to do with her mid hands and certainly didn’t come off as straight but she managed to impress a couple of people by playing her finger cymbals in the middle of the move using her high hands.

Changing her tactic, she continued with the steady rhythm of the finger cymbals but instead focused on her hip movements up and down. Gradually she lowered, bending her knees and feeling the burn upon her thighs. Her hips still moved up and down and she slowly stood up once more. Never ceasing the movement with her hips she raised up one leg to form a triangle like a stork and balanced there for several moments.

It was time for something else that was showy. After some quick steps with her feet she subtly switched the finger cymbals to her low hands and then kicked herself into a handstand utilizing her highs and her mids. The one good thing about not wearing a skirt was that it wasn’t going to flop down. Her shirt shifted a little as she held the handstand but that was alright. With her lows she played the finger cymbals as she held herself up for nearly half a chime.

There was some applause as she came back down and it was a good a time as any to give her spiel. “Dancing! Acrobats! Music! The Rearing Stallion hires the best performers for your entertainment. Come to the grand city of Syliras to be amazed, enthralled, and bring your friends too!”

It was rather ironic that she would soon be leaving her job at the Rearing Stallion for one at the Herald’s Arms but she might as well do her best at advertising. She ran along the edges of her newfound audience and held out her hands to collect coins. None of the country folk were quick enough to have their purses out, but there would be other chances.

“Hey! You in the red! Have you paid for a stall space?” Shouted a man in uniform.

Uh oh.

Sayana swiftly untied her horse and leapt onto it. “Now that you’ve had a taste, come to Syliras for some more!” She called out and tried to weave through the crowd before the knight, squire or whoever he was got even more upset. She was hardly able to make a dramatic exit but at least people parted to let her through. Once she was free of the busy marketplace she kicked her horse into a trot. The Outpost wasn’t all that big and after several chimes she had found her way to the other side.

Well, so much for that plan. But perhaps she could spread the word of Ser Kevith’s tavern someplace else. Suddenly an idea came to her. What if she advertised the very essence of the name?

This wasn’t the first time she had come to the Outpost, and last time she had stayed at a much smaller and less enjoyable tavern. With a kick of her heels she pulled at one rein and guided the horse towards the Fool’s Errand. Even as she approached she daringly broke into a canter. Her mount’s hooves clattered loudly upon the cobblestone and as she neared the inn she called out in a loud voice, “News from Syliras! News from Syliras! The finest drinks and entertainment for all, at the Rearing Stallion!” As she called out the name of the tavern she yanked hard on both the reins. For a moment she beamed as the horse began to rear up with a whinny right in front of the lowly inn of the Mithryn Outpost.

However, the bit of stagecraft was not without flaw. Even as the horse reared higher, Sayana could feel herself starting to slip and lean too far backwards. Her beaming face turned to one of unhappy surprise. She only had just enough time to jump off at an awkward angle from the horse and stumble to the ground using her low hands to catch her. Her horse had meanwhile dashed off as soon as it was riderless and Sayana cursed aloud as she dusted off her scraped hands. They stung as she blew at them but unfortunately she couldn’t find any immediate source of water.

A few people had come out of the tavern curiously at her antics and a couple of them were sniggering at her fall. “Rearing Stallion?” Cried a loud deep voice. “More like Stumbling Foal.” There was some laughter at the owner’s joke. “I sure hope the entertainers there don’t fall off like that.”

The Eypharian flushed and scampered away from the scene. She had successfully avoided breaking her back from trying such a stunt, but it hadn’t left the tavern with a better reputation. Though maybe some people would be curious to visit the place regardless. Sometimes negative attention was just as good as positive attention. But then she remembered that her horse had disappeared and with a scowl she stuck to the smaller streets as she began looking for it.

“Chestnut, Chestnut!” She called but when she spotted a villager she darted behind a corner. Frankly she was still rather embarrassed by the failure of her earlier stunt and didn’t need anyone else mocking her. They didn’t realize just how hard it was to stay on a rearing horse even when expecting it. She creeped along through the winding streets, mostly comprised of cottages and the occasional small store. There was enough people around that occasionally she just had to pretend that she had lived here all her life, but she still got a few stares.

Syna was beginning her decent which fortunately made for longer shadows to hide within. Though more often than not, Sayana merely ducked behind a nook or within a doorway before carrying on to avoid further humiliation. How far could her horse have gotten to? She started to look down for signs of tracks but the cobblestones didn’t help. Her hope was starting to wane and she realized that if Syna was going to be setting soon, she’d have to get back to Syliras quickly.

As her eyes cast around for any sort of sign, she caught sight of a small tuft of brown hair caught on one of the fences running alongside a cottage. Could it possibly be from Chestnut? There were so many other horses at Mithryn Outpost that she couldn’t say for sure. But at least she could try. As she snuck along the edge of the fence hoping not to be seen by the owners, she saw that the gate to the backyard was ajar. Hope swelled within her as she determined that it was probably open wide enough for a horse, but then she spotted movement from within the cottage.

Sayand ducked beneath the height of the window sill and scampered towards the open gate. With relief saw her horse munching on various leaves from the vegetable garden in the back. “Found you!” She whispered excitedly and grasped the reins of the horse.

Carefully she maneuvered back out from the garden. She ducked down again but since she knew her horse couldn’t do the same, she simply walked it at a slow pace hoping that the minimal movement wouldn’t attract much attention. Exhaling slowly, she was finally free of the cottage property.

“Let’s be back to Syliras. I think I’ve had enough of this place to last a season or two.” The Eypharian said to her stallion as she mounted up. With a couple firm kicks she was off at a trot and soon a canter through the streets of Mithryn. She waved to the knights as she passed under the gate and cantered on faster. Her body rocked with the horse’s gait and the wind blew through her hair. It had been quite the day at the little outpost.
