Lian stirred from his slumber when the hearty cries of his children roused him. His first thought was to see what had disturbed them, but as he sat up to look, Seirei was already starting to feed them. One twin was cradled in each arm as she suckled their children. Lian couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment as he watched the scene before him. Lukar and Lira were his children. His. Lian could not deny that Seirei had a part in their lives. She was their mother. She was the one who tended to their needs most of the time. But the twins were his children, all the same. Like him, they were Drykas. He would teach them how to ride, and how to take care of a horse. How to hunt. And any number of other things. He would teach them the ways of their people. When the time came, they would bond to striders, and take their rightful place as true Drykas.

Seirei was their mother, but she was his captive. A foreigner who could teach them none of the things they needed to know. She might be able to pass on her knowledge of carving wood, giving the twins a valuable skill, but she would never truly be a part of their family. Her place was as a breeder, a producer of children, nothing more.

And yet...Lian's family would not exist without her. Seirei had given him something priceless. The beginnings of a family. Someone to love. Someone to live for. And an heir. Through Lukar, the Windrunner pavilion would continue on after Lian's death. Captive or not, Lian owed Seirei a great deal for that. Willing or not...and she definitely had not been willing...she had given him what he longed for most. Children. She would continue to give him more children in the future, too.

Lian knew that he would never give Seirei what she must long for the most; her freedom. At least he wouldn't free her unless she managed to bond to a strider and become a true Drykas...something that was starting to look less impossible as time passed. But possible or not, it wouldn't be happening any time soon. What Lian could do instead, was offer Seirei some time to herself. He could offer to watch the twins for a while so she could enjoy some peace. And if he got the pleasure of spending some alone time with his children in the process, so much the better.

Lian waited until Seirei had finished feeding the twins before he made his offer.

"Seirei, if you'd like, I can watch the twins for part of the day. Go spend some time with your friends, or something. I think you could use a break.".

7th Bell, morning

Seirei was having a pleasant dream. But something felt...off somehow. It felt as though she was needed for something. As her sleeping mind drifted towards wakefulness, she sensed the twins stirring. Even before they started to cry, Seirei was awake. They would be hungry when they first woke up, and asking to wait wasn't an option. So they weren't crying for more than a chime or two before Seirei had picked them up, and was starting to feed them.

Lian was watching her as she fed the twins. She felt his eyes burning into her even if she deliberately did not turn to look at him. It made her feel deeply uncomfortable, and she had to resist the urge to shudder with dread. Why was he watching her like that? What was he thinking about? Was he going to force himself on her? Surely not when the twins were in her arms. Right? If he attacked her now, he would hurt them. That gave Seirei a little comfort. Lian wasn't likely to do anything that would risk harm to Lukar and Lira. But what if he decided to force himself on her tonight? How could she stop him? What if...

"Seirei, if you'd like, I can watch the twins for part of the day. Go spend some time with your friends, or something. I think you could use a break."

Seirei turned to stare at her captor, her train of thought shattered. That was what he was thinking about when he was staring at her just now? It was...thoughtful of him. Nice, even. Seirei couldn't help but wonder what the catch was. That didn't stop her from accepting his offer, though. It would be nice to have a few bells without the twins to look after. Seirei felt guilty for even thinking that, but it was true all the same.

"Thank you. I think I will."

Once the twins were finished with their breakfast, she handed them to Lian. Then Seirei moved around the tent, gathering her sketch book, and drawing supplies. Teisaia and Rytira were busy today, but it was looking to be a beautiful day today. The thought of going out and getting some drawing practice in when she didn't have to worry about the twins was an appealing one. After giving Lian one last questioning glance, she took her leave.

All Good Deeds Shall be Punished (Seirei)

Lian enjoyed spending time with his children. He made silly sounds at them, and listened as they babbled happily back at him. He hid his face, and "peeked" out at them from behind his hands. This seemed to amuse Lukar and Lira to no end. They like it when he mimicked the sounds they made, too. It made them shriek and giggle in delight.

After a while, Lukar began to cry. Lian didn't know the difference between the twins' cries as well as Seirei did, but he knew that this wasn't a hungry cry. Nor was it a cry of pain or fear. Using the process of elimination, Lian realized what the problem was. It made perfect sense when he thought about it. What went in one end was going to come out the other sooner or later.

Lian made sure that Lira was safe, and occupied. Then he removed Lukar's swaddling cloths. Thankfully, he hadn't been wet long enough for the urine to soak through his diaper, and into the swaddling cloths. Lian set the dirty diaper aside. It would have to be cleaned at the first possible opportunity; a task that he would happily leave for Seirei. Burying the soiled diaper near the tent would prevent the scent of the urine from spreading throughout the tent before she returned. Lian found a clean cloth diaper, and carefully folded it so it would do its job. Then he tied the ends so it would stay on. Lukar squirmed, and fussed as Lian changed him, but he got the job done without too much difficulty.

He was about to wrap his son in his swaddling cloths once more, when he got an idea. Why not let the twins play for a bit? They were in the safety of the tent, so there was little danger. After checking to make sure that all of his arrows, and Seirei's tools were well out of reach, he set Lukar on the ground gently. Then he removed Lira's swaddling cloths, and set her beside him. When not restrained by their swaddling cloths, the twins were able to sit by themselves.

With some effort, Lian searched through his captives' belongings until he found the cakes he'd seen her using in the past. He crumbled a small corner off each one, and placed each into one of the bowls his captive had. Using some of the water they had stored, Lian mixed the paints. He used more water than he thought truly necessary to dilute the paint. He didn't think there was anything harmful in them. When he was a child, he'd been told that paints and dyes were made from flowers, and plants, and such. So as long as he was careful to make sure the twins didn't eat them, he was fairly sure they were safe enough. Still, it was better to be safe than sorry where his children were concerned. Hence the extra water to dilute the paints just in case their was something harmful in them.

When he was satisfied that the paints were diluted enough, he set the bowls down in front of the twins. They'd probably get the paint all over themselves, but it would be easy enough to get them cleaned up afterwards. Hopefully. He watched them for a while. It amused him greatly to see Lukar and Lira patting the paint with their hands, seeming to like the way it felt. Perhaps it was because the paint was cooler than the air around them.

But after a while, Lian remembered what Trail had told him about arrows that had been used too many times. He had promised himself that he would sort them out as soon as he'd gone home. But the twins had been fussy, and Seirei needed help to calm them down. One thing happened after another, and before Lian knew it, he had forgotten to sort through his arrows. Until now. Lian glanced at Lukar and Lira. They were happy enough, babbling at each other contentedly as they dipped their hands in the different colors.

Lian convinced himself that it would be okay to sort through his arrows now. He'd be in the next "room" of the tent, a small section separated from the rest in case he or Seirei needed a bit of privacy. He would be able to hear everything that went on in the main area, and he'd check on the twins frequently. If something sounded off in any way, he'd come immediately to check on them, even if he had checked on them just ticks before.

So Lian gathered all of his arrows, and retreated behind the divider. The first arrows he examined were the ones currently in his quiver. Those were the ones he used most often. One by one, he examined the arrows. Those that were slightly bowed, or that had frayed feathers were placed in one pile. Arrows whose tips had become dull joined them. That accounted for half of the arrows in his quiver, ten total. The remaining ten were put back into his quiver. The ones that were removed would be kept, but from now on, they would only be used for target practice.

It was time to check on the twins, so Lian poked his head around the divider. They seemed happy enough. Both were giggling as Lukar patted his legs with paint covered hands, and Lira patted his cheek, leaving a blue mark. Lian grinned, amused by their antics. He watched them for a few chimes more, then went back to his task.

Lian began examining the arrows in one of his spare bundles. Most of the arrows in this set of twenty were fine. The five that were not joined the group of arrows set aside for practice only. Ten of the arrows from this bundle were put into his quiver so Lian would have twenty with him when he went hunting. Then he moved onto the second bundle of arrows. All twenty proved to be in good shape. They were packed back up into their bundle.

Lian got up to check on the twins once more. They were fine, and Lira giggled happily when she saw him. Lian grinned, and made a funny face at her. This was rewarded by a shriek of delight and a string of happy babbling. This got Lukar's attention. When Lian made a funny face at him, Lukar stuck his tongue out at him, and blew a raspberry. Lian chuckled. By now, both kids had a good amount of paint on them, and some paint had been spilled onto the ground around the bowls.

There was one more bundle of arrows to examine, so Lian retreated behind the divider once more. The final fourteen arrows were carefully examined one by one. All of them were fine. Lian added the five arrows left over from his first bundle to this one, leaving him with a quiver full of good arrows as well as two bundles of spare arrows that were good. He needed a way to know which bundle of arrows could only be used for practice at a glance. So he gave it some thought, and came up with the idea of dying the ends of the rope he used to secure the bundle of practice arrows. Paint would work just as well for the job, and he already had some ready made that he could use. So he grabbed his length of rope, and headed back out into the main area once more.

There were no words to describe the sight that greeted him when he emerged. Lukar and Lira were both covered in paint. You had to search long and hard to find a bit of skin on either child that was paint free. That much, Lian had almost expected. Though seeing it now, it was much worse than he had imagined it to be. And that was only the beginning.

The tent wall nearest them was also drenched in paint. As Lian stared at the mess, he saw splashes of paint much higher than he ever would have thought the twins could reach. They must have shaken their paint covered hands above their heads for drops of paint to reach up that far. They were sitting in a pool of paint. A pool that was spreading slowly. Lian rushed over, and grabbed their swaddling cloths before the growing pool of paint could reach them. Splatters of paint were...everywhere. Anything that wasn't inside something else, or safely behind the divided area had at least a few splotches of paint on it.

Lian stared in shock. What...how...? Was he dreaming? Lian pinched himself, and flinched at the sharp pain. No. No, he definitely wasn't dreaming. Lian crouched down so he was close to eye level with the kids.

"How did you do this?" he asked in stunned dismay.

"Da! Da, da, da!" Lukar shrieked.

"Ba!" Lira added.

"Your mother is going to kill me, isn't she? There's no way we can clean all of this up. Do paints stain? Why did I ever think this was a good idea?" he asked, nearly babbling himself.

Lukar chose that moment to slam his hand into one of the bowls of paint hard. Lian felt liquid hit his face and arms as the paint splashed him. Both of the twins shrieked with laughter at the stunned expression on his face. Lian only whimpered..

All Good Deeds Shall be Punished (Seirei)

"I'm home!" Seirei called as she opened the tent flap.

"How are the...twins?"

Seirei's voice trailed off as the chaos that greeted her registered in her mind. Her eyes widened, and she stared at the sight incomprehensibly. Two young children looked up at her arrival. They were covered head to toe in...paint? How was that possible? Her paints were safely stowed away where small little hands couldn't reach them. More importantly, you had to mix the cakes of paint with water to get them to their current liquid form. There was no way that Lukar and Lira could have gotten into her paints on their own. No way for them to have mixed the paints. They wouldn't even know how to!

Seirei noticed absently that paint covered or not, Lukar and Lira were mostly naked. That was one small blessing. Sort of. It meant that their swaddling cloths hadn't been destroyed. Then again, if the twins had been in their swaddling cloths as they should have been, they wouldn't have been able to cause this disaster in the first place.

Lian was crouched down next to the twins. He looked completely and utterly stunned. Seirei could understand how he felt. She felt the same. Lian's face and arms were covered with splashes of paint. There were even a few in his hair.

The tent hadn't faired any better. One of the walls had been well...decorated with splotches of paint. Near the ground, within reach of grasping hands, the wall sported hand prints in a variety of colors. The twins were sitting in a spreading pool of paint. Everything surrounding them was splattered with paint. And the twins were giggling as if it was the funniest thing in the world. To them, maybe it was.

Seirei broke out of her shock, and rushed over to scoop the twins out of the paint they were sitting in. She didn't think the paint was made out of anything that could harm them, but she couldn't be sure. She would have to take them to the River Flower to get them looked over to be certain. But first, she needed answers.

"Lian..." Seirei fell silent as her voice failed her.

She swallowed hard, and tried again.

"What...what happened?" she demanded weakly.

Lian started when Seirei's shocked voice impinged on his awareness. As he looked up, he flushed with shame, much like a young child who had gotten caught doing something he shouldn't have. Slowly he stood, gathering his thoughts. Seirei deserved an explanation. And he had one. Really he did.

"He did it." Lian said, pointing at Lukar as he spoke.

"Well, they both did, really."

It was a lie, of course. It wasn't even a good lie. No one in their right mind would believe such an impossible excuse. But it was the first thing that came to mind. There was even a shred of truth in it. Sort of. Lukar and Lira were the ones who made the mess. But it never would have happened if Lian hadn't taken some of Seirei's paint, mixed it into a useable form, and let the twins play with it.

Lian flushed again. Seirei was going to kill him, he just knew it. She was going to start yelling at him at any time now, calling him all kinds of an idiot. It would be horribly humiliating to be chastised by his own captive. He was supposed to be doing the chastising if she displeased him, not the other way around. But in this case, he deserved every bit of humiliation that came his way, and he knew it.

"They...err...they might have had help getting the paint they were playing with..."

"But they were the ones who made the mess. Really!"

Lian cringed inwardly, bracing himself for the yelling that was certain to begin at any moment. If he were really lucky, maybe his closest neighbors weren't home right now. If they weren't, no one would hear him get yelled at like an errant child by his own captive. Deserved or not, Lian didn't want to face that humiliation..

All Good Deeds Shall be Punished (Seirei)

Seirei stared at Lian with narrowed eyes. For several long ticks, she couldn't find the words to say what she wanted to say. Part of her wanted to laugh. Lian's "explanation" as such, was pathetic. It was a lie, and she knew it. But seeing a grown man trying to twist his way out of trouble the same way Jared had when they were kids was funny. Sort of.

Mostly, Seirei was furious. The twins looked okay. And she didn't think anything in the paints could harm them. But what if they got sick because of this? What if Lian's...whatever he thought he was doing hurt her children? Then there was the damage the twins had caused to consider. For those reasons, Seirei desperately wanted to scream at Lian until voice failed her.

But she didn't. She didn't dare. If she gave in to her anger, Lian might become angry himself. Seirei remembered what happened when she brought the man's anger down upon her, and she didn't want to risk it happening again. So she took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and counted to ten. When she opened her eyes again, her emotions were slightly more under her control. She was far from calm, but she wasn't quite as likely to start screaming at the man hysterically.

"The twins did this." she said flatly.

Seirei paused as she looked around the tent once more.

"Right. Fine. Whatever." she ground out.

"I'm going to take the twins to the River Flower to make sure that this little...adventure of theirs hasn't harmed them in any way. You can clean this mess up."

With that, she stalked out of the tent. Lian could fend for himself when it came to cleaning everything up. Maybe if he had to do it himself, he would think twice about letting Lukar and Lira play with her paints again. That, of course, assumed that she was ever going to leave him alone with them again. And right now, she couldn't ever imagine herself doing so.
