The Sea of Grass is a dangerous place...

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

Merevaika

9th Fall 515
Merevaika held her bow tightly, stalking away from the group with determination. Today, she would hunt something down for the group to share, not just something for herself. Time to start acting as a member of the group rather than a traveler traveling alongside them.

They had probably all been asleep when she left, as Syna hadn't yet risen, signifying the start of the day, so she moved carefully, not wanting to wake them. If she was lucky she would return to find them still asleep, and they wouldn't worry about her absence. The drykas passed the smouldering remains of the fire from last night, and further, enveloped by the tall grass that had overgrown here in the centre of Cyphrus.

It was hard to see, the sky a dark purple colour and grass blocking most her view, sections reaching past her head. It was hard to navigate, so she kept to a trail, not wanting to get lost amongst this Sea of Grass. It was this thin pathway, a section where grass had been trample on, worn down or just didn't grow, that she would find some sort of animal. It was obviously used, with fur on the sides and prints and droppings. The dropping were either rabbit or a similar creature, but that was all she recognised. The rest was unclear to a novice tracker like herself.

If there had been someone with her, she would have acted as if she understood it all. It was her way, pretending through life to impose dominance and superiority over others. It usually worked - either they knew what they were doing and she would copy them, or they didn't, so whatever she said, they believed. At least she assumed it worked. Barely anyone pointed it out, but she barely communicated with anyone anyway. Just a few, certain individuals.

Of course, this journey meant lots of interaction with others, which would eventually reveal herself as a fake. It would be Kei who would realise this. The guide would look out for his fellow drykas, she assumed, and Zephari was Benshira with knowledge about mining, not survival, not in the plains anyway. Kei was the one who got on her nerves, he was the one who knew hunting and survival in the plains, at least a little. Which is why she hunted without him, so she could blame lack of prey for her misfortunes, not lack of skill.

Although perhaps it was better if someone knew. Then she might get help. But help was a sign of weakness, and she didn't like it. Hiring a guide was the lowest she would stoop, for the moment.

Hunting. Merevaika brought her thoughts back to the thoughts that brought her away from her companions and into this maze of grass.

oocHopefully it's okay. I thought perhaps Kei would either already by out for her to bump into, or would follow her out. PM me if you want me to change anything.

Sneaking Out [Kei]

Postby Kei on September 20th, 2015, 1:17 am

When she left, he noticed. Kei wasn't sure what she thought she was doing, but he was under the assumption that she was trying to be sneaky. Maybe she was from the average person's perspective, but for Kei, Merevaika's separation from the group was obvious. As for her motives, he was unsure. He was pretty sure sneaking out while others were asleep was not common. So it was decided that some snooping would needs to take place.

Kei stripped himself of his clothing and placed it neatly into the bag; if he had to wear clothing, it mustn't be wrinkled. He shifted quickly and silently, grabbing the bag in his talons before giving a few strong strokes from his wings to lift him into the air.

As an eagle, Kei able to tell that Merevaika was carrying a bow. The first thing that came to mind was that she must be going out on a hunt. The second thing that came to mind was that she had admitted to not being very good at hunting during their initial meeting. So once again, the question was, what was Merevaika doing and/or thinking? The urge to follow her remained strong.

He followed the Drykas from the sky, watching her follow a pre-existing path and pausing every-so-often to look at something for half a second before continuing to move; she must have found something's track. The distance was too far for Kei to see exactly what she was looking at, but from the fact that he could hardly see any trace of what she was looking at, he assumed that she was tracking something small.

Internally, this gave him a small bit of amusement. During their first meeting, she had attempted to act as if she was smarter than him, like she had more experience. In a sense, it was true. She knew a whole lot more than the Kelvic than he let her believe. All it takes is a strategically stated sentence and he could make himself seem like he knew the secrets to the world. To Kei, it seemed like she did the same thing. Maybe that's why she was going alone; to hid her lack of deep knowledge on the subject of hunting.

She more than likely did not know exactly what she was hunting; just that it was something small. Though Kei himself did not know if he himself would know exactly what animal Merevaika was tracking even if his did get a good look at the tracks or droppings or whatever she was using to follow this animal. But he could pretend he did.

It took willpower for Kei to not get closer; any closer, he though, and she would notice him. The entire idea was that he was trying to be stealthy. That he was the hunter and she was prey. In order for the hunt to succeed, in this analogy, he had to keep his distance and be patient.

Sorry NoteAhhhhhhhh. Sorry for not responding. ;-; I've had band and we've been quite busy. And then I completely forgot about Miza. But I make my return. And I'm getting back into the swing of things, I'll be more active. Again, sorry for making you wait so long. .-.

Merevaika

There was a break in the tracks and she found something she wasn't expected. This track was obvious, deep and clear, and Merevaika froze, suddenly stopping with her progress. It was night lion. Four large toes, the distinct cat shaped marking. It was big, the pawprint around the size of her hand. A creature like that could do some serious damage.

And she was near it. The lion's pawprint was slowly filling with the water trapped in the mud around it, which she assumed meant fresh, as if it wasn't, it would be full of that water. Merevaika held her breath, staring at it in case she had read something wrong, hoping that it was old, hoping it was a stupid mess up, but it was clearly written on the ground.

It had headed across the trail she had been following, down towards where Merevaika knew there was water. The lion wouldn't have had any reason to leave it, as she herself remembered thinking what a good shelter the large rock beside it provided. A shelter and water would be enough to keep a lion in one place. And that place was only a few metres from where she crouched.

Merevaika didn't want to move, knowing that she could easily alert it, and appear as either a tasty snack or a threat, neither preferable. If she stayed still, she would be stuck in the middle of the Sea of Grass, hidden from the others, until someone or something stumbled across her, or until she was certain that the lion had gone. Merevaika had no idea when that might happen.

Hands trembling, she hooked the arrow onto her bowstring, ready to defend herself if need be. Night lions were formidable predators, just behind glassbeaks in the ranking, stalking the night and filling it with terror... A sudden thought formed in her mind. They were nocturnal, and if she waited long enough, it would sleep. But it was still night, and still dangerous to be around.

Unfortunately, despite all her hopes and prayers, she spotted a glimpse of coal black fur through where the grass wasn't as thick. A single amber eye peered through, staring right at her. It had seen her. And now she was the prey.

Sneaking Out [Kei]

Postby Kei on September 26th, 2015, 10:52 pm

For a little while longer, Kei followed diligently; never faltering in his quest that he had decided to take into action on his own. Though he really was bored for the most part, he held out. Not much really seemed to happen until Merevaika stopped suddenly. Kei, who wasn't paying the most amount of attention, almost flew right past her until he noticed her stopping. She was looking at something.

Kei drifted down closer to Merevaika, but maintaining a distance from which he assumed he couldn't be seen. There was a large print embedded deep into the ground; large enough for Kei to place in fist fully into if he was in his human form. It seemed fresh, but even though he closed a bit of distance between himself and the ground, Kei couldn't tell just how fresh. It was easy, though, to tell that the print was that of a Night Lion.

Before he had meet Merevaika, Kei had seen a few night lions before. He never dared move in on the animals; he was always to cowardly to try and attack once. He decided it would be foolish anyways. Even though he was never close enough for them to know he was there, Kei had observed the animals from a safe distance. He learned that they were powerful animals that were not to be trifled with; especially when their pack was nearby. Running into a night lion was bad luck because generally, where there was one of the beast, there were more. If what Merevaika really had stumbled upon was a night lion, she was truly in trouble.

Though he did nothing, Kei stretched his senses to the fullest, though not daring to get any further or closer. Although he liked to think himself fairly knowledgeable in the subject of these lions, Kei still didn't feel like he could take one in a fight, so he decided to keep himself out of the situation for as long as he could. If push came to shove, he was ready to take off.

He watched carefully as Merevaika prepared an arrow. She was noticeably frightened, shaking ever so slightly as she readied her bow. As he watched, Kei noticed a slight rustling in the grass, the lion, he assumed. From the distance he remained, he almost froze, forgetting to continuously move him wings to keep him in the air. It was a silly thing for him to have frozen in fear, it was probably safe to assume that the lion couldn't seem him and he refused to believe that he was scared for Merevaika. Perhaps he was. He did know one thing for certain, she had been spotted, the rustling of the grass was too close to her for the lion to not have at least smelling her. As far as Kei could tell, Merevaika was just about doomed.

Merevaika

She was dead. Well and truly dead. Her mind tried to search her memories, trying to think of anything she might had been told, or heard, that could possible help her out. Nothing. People who faced night lions were always assumed dead. She couldn't think of a single time when she had heard of someone who had been through a lion attack and lived to tell the tale. She was certainly doomed. But before Merevaika admitted defeat, she would fight back. Unlike others, Merevaika was not a drykas who gave up or accepted her fate. Perhaps the gods had finally caught up the Stormchaser, ready to remove the last trace of them from the face of Cyphrus. If that was true, she would fight the will of the gods. She would fight until her last breath.

Making that promise to herself, she stared straight back at the lion, trying to convince him that she wasn't normal prey. If the lion didn't feel that his territory or family was threatened, and wasn't hungry, he would just leave her alone, but if that wasn't true, she would have to convince him that she wasn't worth messing with. If she looked threatening, perhaps the big cat would have second thoughts on attacking her. Then again, it may push him into attacking her to defend his family.

Merevaika knew one thing: don't turn your back on a lion and run. That would make her look like prey, and a easy target. There was no way she would be able to outrun it, so even trying was futile. Whatever happened, she would keep her eyes on it, green eyes staring into amber.

Moving slowly, Merevaika shifted towards her right, spotting a mound in the ground. Stepping up on it, she grew in size, now almost towering over the grass around her. As far as she could tell, the lion seemed slightly unnerved, one foot padding back. "Go away, mighty beast, for I mean you no harm. Begone, and I will do no harm. Caiyha, take your great son away, and let him not bother me." Her words were loud and firm, said while keeping eye contact with the lion.

Despite her best efforts, it stepped closer, a deep growl emitting from it. Her choices were limited, and she looked around, hoping for a saviour. Her eyes trailed along the ground, scanning the area, before looking up at the sky, hoping for help from above. Her eyes lingered on a black shadow, a large bird. Her thoughts immediately went to Kei, who held a similar form to the one she made out. And the bird remained fairly still, as if watching her.

Hoping that it was Kei, and that he would be her saviour, she called out, voice carried by the wind. "If you are Kei, help me! Please, help!" The lion was slowly approaching, taking time with his attack. Merevaika shifted back, ready to defend herself with the bow, trembling hard. Kei better help her. She needed it.

Feeling all was lost, she muttered a quick prayer, begging for help from KelWyn of Lost Causes. This was definitely a lost cause.

oocHopefully her spotting Kei is alright with you. If not, feel free to say and I'll change it!

Merevaika

The lion growled again, then kicked up dust, roaring a thundering roar. Baring its teeth, the beast skidded through the grasses, tail flicking. Merevaika found herself taking in a sharp breath, staring the beast down as she froze in the spot. But instead of the creature launching itself at her, it darted in a zig-zag motion, growling and making itself appear impressive.

It was trying to scare her. Merevaika had to admit that it worked, but she couldn't let that phase her. Pushing out of the frozen state she was in, Merevaika bared her bow, yelling nonsensical words and shouting to scare the lion away. She had her arrow and pointed it at the creature, then shifted her aim straight down, letting the arrow thud before the lion.

Stopping instantly at the sight of the weapon, the lion growled, padding around the arrow, which stuck out of the ground marking a border with the brown white feathers. Merevaika snatched up another arrow, notching it with trembling fingers. Before the lion approached any more, she shot it out, another addition to the border. Growling the lion side stepped, but made no move to go further. Reaching for another arrow, Merevaika shuffled back, settling her breathing a little. It was working. Spitting down on the ground, she let the last arrow fly towards the arrow, once again at its feet. Her eyes moved to the sky, but the bird was gone. Had she just imagined it?

She shuffled back, then felt another breath on her shoulder, and a familiar snort. The lion growled as the Strider came into view, almost as dark as the lion itself. Without wasting another moment, Merevaika clutched Eryunt's mane, hoisting herself up onto his back. Without any action from her, the horse turned and ran, the lion giving chase.

But they had the web coursing through them, and the lion disappeared from behind them. She would never make the mistake of leaving without him again.
