They covered ground at a steady pace, avoiding use of the Web so that the non-striders could keep apace. Merevaika’s Eryunt fell into step on the left side, while her Denviel took up a position at the rear, apparently unwilling to grow too close to the white she-wolf on Shahar’s right. But that was alright; the most important task now was simply closing the distance between them and the river, and that was something the entire group accomplished seamlessly.

Though Shahar sent regular flashes of inquiry alright? to Snow, she didn’t seem too winded by the travel; although she wasn’t nearly as fast as Tuka and wouldn’t be able to keep up with a strider tapping into the Web, she proved herself to possess incredible endurance when it came to distance; the first few ticks of running had been uneasy, with that had quickly faded once she settled into the rhythm of the group’s travel. Shahar could even feel a few flickers of enjoyment didn’t know could do this, underlaid with a hint of pride.

Nevertheless, they slowed down considerable when they came to the trampled earth and clipped grass. It had been made some hours ago, and while this herd was certainly within riding distance, it was headed towards the river. It was entirely possible that it had split in that time; to truly know the movements of the many animals that were moving south to avoid the oncoming winter, bells of scouting would be required.

Bells of scouting, or ticks of webbing.

“We could go after these,” an option, all options open. “Another half-bell to find them, and then more to trap them.” But, more options, small time, searching. Others possible close, don’t know. “I will go into the Web,” short time, not long, staying still resting time. “I will look for all the herds here, and see what they are doing and where they are.”

He slowed their canter to a trot, urging Akaidras towards a thick, thorny bush to begin his search.

Just as he arrived, something occurred to him. He turned, faced Merevaika and gestured to the thornbush.

“That bush,” he said, useful, defense. “The thorns are good.” Desire to teach, information. If already know, apologies. “Only small animals can get through thornbushes. Rabbits, squirrels, snakes.” Small non-dangerous. “Big animals get caught, and avoid it. Lions, bears, glassbeaks.” They will not go through. “Sometimes, hunting, I take the bush and put it around my camp. It keeps many dangers away.” He brought Akaidras to a halt and dismounted. “Here if I web,” keep my back to it, “nothing will attack from behind.”

Reforging Alliances (Merevaika)

Merevaika

Shahar slowed his horse, directing him to a thick, thorny bush. Merevaika followed just behind, listening carefully to the options. There would be a long time scouting, tracking, hunting to find these creatures the natural way, using their senses gifted to them by the gods. And there was the option of webbing, the magic that gave them that advantage. It was shorter, quicker and easier. It was obvious what he wanted to do.
Web, great magic, short time, she signed, jealousy slowly creeping up. One day, she would learn it too. She would use it to watch the lands, to hunt her prey, to do whatever he did with it. One day.

He spoke and signed with a desire to teach, and Merevaika indicated interest for knowledge. He explained how only small animals could go through it, non-dangerous animals. It could be used as a defense, he explained, against the larger predators. Perfect, she realised, for both the task at hand, and for protecting herself at later dates. She nodded to what he said, promising safety, protection.

She had had to protect him in this state before, but then, as far as she could remember, he wouldn't have been so forward with it, because why would he? She had been a stranger. Now she was a friend, and as a friend, she would protect him in this weak and vulnerable state. With the bush on one side, she would keep her eyes out on the other, turning on her horse as he dismounted as if to give him some privacy. Her eyes were peeled, watching for any sign of animal, large or small.

As he did what he did, she waited patiently, vigilantly on guard. Thankfully, there was nothing to see. Apart from the slight movement of a mouse or rat - too far for her to bother trying to quickly catch- nothing appeared, Shahar in his state in peace. Once he was done, Merevaika would scan the surroundings one more time, before asking, "What did you see? Are there deer to be found nearby, or must be move further?"

Merevaika slowed in turn, matching Shahar’s movements closely and quietly. She responded well to the information he offered regarding the thorn bush, flashing interest back at him; she wanted to learn what he had to teach, which eased his trepidation––he’d never been one for unsolicited advice in the first place, and knowing that his advice was something she actually wanted was heartening.

She swore to guard him during his travel in the Web, and for that he was grateful. He bid Snow to keep watch alongside Merevaika, something the white she-wolf was all too happy to do; Snow had decided that she quite liked Merevaika, and trotted over to plop herself down next to the huntress.

With his protection as strong as it was going to get, Shahar closed his eyes and reached out for the strands of djed that surrounded him. They lingered always, never gone, always waiting for him to touch them; they shivered under contact, but remained whole for him to pull himself inside.

As Shahar left his body, he was subject to the typical vertigo of suddenly not being, once again forcefully acquainted with the echoing lack of flesh and bone and cloth and wind, and become only the inside-Shahar, made of thoughts and hopes and fears and all those things that were not physical.

Once he ‘got his feet under him,’ Shahar’s first order of business was to carve a quick circle around the immediate vicinity. The vibrations of life pushed at him from all sides, thin and resilient, each one calling for his attention. Shahar knew better than to look; the many times he had become distracted examining small things, he had only learned that he had no idea what those small things were. He could readily distinguish grass from animals, and by the size of their ripples he could get a vague idea of their size, but that was the extent of his ability. He could find a dog-sized ripple, but would not be able to tell if it was in fact a dog, a hunting cat, a hyena, a coyote, or anything else of similar size.

The rest of the hunting party, however, was fairly easy to identify, as they were right next to him and had somewhat larger ripples than the rest of the world. There were no dangerously large animals in the area, and so Shahar felt comfortable striking away from them, deeper into the grasslands and towards the river.

The laws of tracking still applied within the eb, and it was those laws he followed; if he found what animals wanted, then he would almost certainly find the animals that wanted it. The same held true for the river; he found the ever-changing rumble of the running water, and next to it he found the large, thrumming ripples of many large animals. Some were on one side, some on the other, some moving south at a brisk pace while others meandered. But more concerning was the smaller, more acute ring of other animals, circling at the edges of the herds warily; he couldn’t tell what they were, but he was almost certain of one thing: they were competition.

Shahar returned to the thornbush in quick order, sliding back into his body with a painful jerk as his physical senses were slammed back over him.

After a few moments of recovery, Shahar straightened and climbed unsteadily back to his feet, making his way to Akaidras for support. It would take a few ticks to return to his full strength, but spending those ticks in the yvas would keep him useful.

I found them, he said, pointing in the direction of the river. That way, “I know where they are.” However, caution, also, “We won’t be the only ones hunting them.” He hauled himself into the yvas, and Tuka and Snow slid to each side. “Pack hunters are also there,” could be trouble, we should be careful. “I believe we can avoid aggravating them, but if we make a kill then we might have to defend it.”

Shahar coaxed Akaidras into a walk, then a trot, then a slow lope.

“We both have horses. When we find a herd, we need to get them running. Running will loosen the herd, and we can separate individual members.”

Reforging Alliances (Merevaika)

Postby Merevaika on December 3rd, 2015, 10:03 pm

Merevaika

The wolf-dog padded beside her as her owner settled into the state of not being there, joining the strands of Djed that weaved across the land. Merevaika found her hand dangle down the side of the horse, almost reaching out to brush Snow gently. Whether the wolf-dog was happy with it or not, she wouldn't know, for her hand didn't reach that far. Almost. Whatever type of creature this was, she was beautifully massive.

The wolf-dog seemed to know when the spirit of Shahar had returned to its body, and the dog trotted back over with a yip. A few moments of him stroking the dogs head, and he rose, returning to his Strider. With that, Merevaika whistled to Denviel, telling him to settle back into position beside her horse. As Shahar moved, so would she. Merevaika watched him, his shoulders shifting slightly, his leg tensing a little or his hips rolling across the yvas. Every movement she anticipated, and mirrored it even before he had started to make it. Eryunt was the true master. Running with Akaidras was what he was meant to do.

As Shahar spoke, explaining the situation, Merevaika thought about it hard. By pack hunters, did he speak of humans, or animals? He hadn't made it clear, and it could be either. It didn't matter to her, she realised as she leaned forward to press against the wind, tightening her legs around Eryunt as she urged him into a faster pace. Get the herd running, she would. When they reached them, the hunting party would easily get them running. What herd of deer would not run when faced with horses and dogs?

She spotted them soon enough, a large cluster congregating beside the river. No sign of the other hunters, but that meant nothing. They could easily be hiding among the grasses, or be slightly up the river, and it was foolish to go completely unaware if they were a danger.

Merevaika signed at Shahar, whistling a low whistle for Denviel to stay with her, I south, you north, down river, agreed? Without waiting for a response, she pulled her horse forward, leaning on her hips to make him turn. Without thinking about it, the horse responded, and they glided towards where the river raged, churning at the banks. The herd responded to her movement instantaneously, bulging at one end while moving from where she rode.

Once she was riding beside the river bank, she pulled herself up on her yvas, pressing her body against Eryunt's neck. He leapt forward, and Denviel followed diligently, knowing what to do. At the hooves of the deer he snapped, moving in a straight line as the ones at the edge began to bounce from side to side, dodging the sharp bites. Then the others caught on, following the movement with instinctive nature. If one started to run, the rest would, fleeing from whatever danger existed.

This danger consisted of Merevaika and the rest of her party, and this danger would definitely prove deadly. She stretched forward, enjoying the feel of the wind against her face, before moving among the deer, casting through them with hope of separating the finest of the lot. A young buck caught her eye, who darted left and right with speed, but no precision, stumbling over his own hooves. That one looked promising.

Buck, here, she gestured towards it, hoping Shahar would understand what she was saying on the bumpy journey. There was a moment where Eryunt spotted a ditch, and he pushed off into the air, catching Mervaika unawares as he did so. She moved up out of her seat, before letting herself move with the horse, flying through the air and staying balanced in her position. Once she had landed, she continued, Others? Ideas?

If the more experienced hunter had nothing more to add, she would continue with this focus, running the deer out until he had tired or she had got in a position to shoot him. Shahar wasn't involved in her plans, because now, it was just her, the buck and the horse.

Reforging Alliances (Merevaika)

Merevaika matched every movement, cornering and compensating to remain alert at his side. Whether it was horse or woman, it was uncannily natural; the two Drykas fit each other as well as they fit their hunting animals. As with Tuka, Shahar was hyperaware of Merevaika’s movements––but Merevaika followed so keenly that he trusted her to keep within the formation, freeing his mind for other thoughts.

She absorbed his information and whistled for her dog, who came to her heel. Then she tossed off a quick, curt I south, you north, down river, agreed? before wheeling her Eryunt to burst off and carry out the plan.

Shahar angled Akaidras opposite, bringing Tuka and Snow to follow; if she drove the herd towards him, he could push back and force the herd away from the river and into the flatlands, giving both horses an advantage in pursuit.

Merevaika began the push first, sending her Denviel to nip at the heels of their quarry and push them north, towards where Shahar waited.

Shahar urged Akaidras forward. The stallion wasn’t particularly keen on heading straight into an oncoming herd, and he pranced uncertainly, eventually letting loose a whinny and rising onto his hind legs to paw at the air. This was enough to give the herd the final encouragement they needed, alongside Snow’s theatrical snapping and snarling, and within moments the deer were pulling away from the river.

With the herd moving away, Akaidras was well aware of what came next; plunging into a gallop, the stallion came to flank the running herd, opposite of Merevaika and Eryunt. Tuka streaked beside them, more loping than sprinting; she was just waiting for one of the herd to break away and give her an opportunity.

His hunting partner flashed signs for his attention, gesturing to a young buck and asking if it would be their prey. It was closer to her side of the herd than his; he wouldn’t be able to reach it unless he carved straight through the churning animals.

Yours, he signed back. Can’t reach, go––

He paused; Tuka had vanished, and was far ahead of them. One of the does had stepped away from the herd to avoid a rock, just for a moment, which had been enough for Tuka to spring forward and get in between the doe and herd and force the creature away.

And Merevaika was already off, running down the fleeing buck with her dog hot on its heels. She was too far away; it was impossibly for Shahar to aid her before her chase was finished, successfully or otherwise.

The doe––Tuka’s doe––their doe––would be his quarry. Two hunters, two deer; if one of them escaped, then there was still a chance for the two of them to return with enough food to keep.

Reforging Alliances (Merevaika)

Merevaika

The chase was on. She signaled to Denviel, who moved around one side of the buck, barking hard. With a firm nudge of the leg, she guided Eryunt into a gallop, finding the other side of the buck, who was now trapped between two hunters. He stumbled more, and Denviel pushed him away front he rest of the herd, dodging between the pounding hooves.

Merevaika watched the buck's own hooves move left and right, trying to anticipate his next move. One seemed to twist to the left, but as the buck kicked forward, Merevaika already blocked him off, pushing Eryunt even faster with the kicks. The deer made some sort of incomprehensible noise, and fell back, dropping its speed in a hope to escape this grasp.

It didn't stop Merevaika, and the huntress moved round, shifting her weight tightly so she could catch with the buck quickly. Cutting off his dodge, she rounded off again, making a full circle of the buck while Denviel did the same, only the other way round. He was well and truly trapped, but turned to the dog with his horns down. He was going to hurt her dog.

It was a quick movement, taking up the bow and lying the arrow on it, drawing the string back hard and pointing it with squinted eyes just behind the shoulder as the buck threw his head. He charged forward, Denviel just missing the blow of the antlers.

The buck wasn't as lucky. By sheer luck, the arrow hit its mark, embedding itself between the ribs. The buck stopped its movement, before pushing forward, getting lost among other deer that scampered around it, forcing their way through in a hope to live. Merevaika nudged Eryunt forward, whistling to Denviel who shook himself out of the shock of being attacked and followed diligently.

There it was. Still tripping, this time even more from the wound. It was bleeding, hard, scattering red on the floor. But with the rest of the deer, Merevaika couldn't reach it, and decided not to. It would most likely stop from its injuries, and she could simply follow its blood trail until she found that point.

"Shahar - I hit it. Dying, not yet though," she yelled over the noise of deer, trying to find where he was, "I will try to follow it." Once she had told him what she planned to do, she spoke to her dog, "Follow the blood trail, good boy." The dog, understanding his purpose, started to chase after the line of red, and Merevaika did too.

The buck had slowed so much in the next hundred metres that the rest of the deer had left him. She pulled around him, lining up her next arrow on the moving horse. Eryunt had a smooth gait, but never as smooth as not moving. She heaved the string, striking the buck again. He was down. She had actually got him down. Unsure what to do, Merevaika stayed at her horse, taking another arrow trained at the fallen buck, just in case. Her eyes scanned the surrounding, to watch Shahar's hunt in action, if it wasn't yet over.

Where Tuka led; Snow followed; although this wasn’t the wolf’s first hunt, she was still as green as could be regarding the ins and outs of death. There were natural instincts, but there wasn’t the experience to channel them to their fullest potential. Not like there was with Tuka. Tuka knew what she was doing, and was heartened by the presence of the wolf; while the hunting cat could chase down and lame quarry easily enough, her delicate body was ill suited for the dirty work of killing.

Work that Snow just so happened to be perfectly suited for.

The doe didn’t stand a chance against Tuka’s sheer speed; at a flat sprint, the hunting cat halved the distance with every heartbeat, and within ticks was able to reach out, snag her claws on the doe’s hindquarters and yank them both to the ground.

Snow was slower that Tuka, but the tumbling allowed both her and Shahar time to catch up. Tuka was snarling and sinking her teeth into the doe’s rump as best she was able––not a killing bite at all, but enough to slow it down until Snow barrelled right over the cat and took the doe by the neck. It was untrained and clumsy, but effective in the fact that it kept the animal firmly pinned to the ground; even though she was still essentially a puppy, Snow had considerable size and considerable weight to match. Even if she was still confused as to where exactly she was supposed to put her teeth.

Shahar pulled Akaidras back into a canter, then into a fast trot as they neared. He swung one leg over the yvas and slid off his strider’s back mid-step––a less than wise choice, as he stumbled and almost fell down, although he managed to use his hands to keep up his forward motion and eventually get back on two feet.

Tuka circled excitedly around Snow and the doe, snarling at the scene despite the fact that she wasn’t making any move to help. Snow was there; if there was a perfectly good wolf to maul prey, then why should Tuka have to exhaust herself? Shahar didn’t have time to chastise her.

The sounds of the deer were fading, and someone was shouting. Merevaika.

Shahar waved at her, although his shoulders were tense; little time, have to go. He heard what she was going to do, and he wished her well, but could not help her until his own quarry was ended.

Taking out a javelin, the clanless hunter moved closer, reaching out to help. Riding high on adrenaline and instinct, Snow nearly bit his fingers off when he tried to touch the thrashing deer. She realized her mistake in an instant, tucking her tail, pinning her ears and whining in shame.

Her distraction almost allowed the deer to slip out from under her. Shahar reacted by throwing himself at it, grabbing the animal’s head and pushing it onto the ground. With the combined weight of himself and Snow, it was more than enough leeway to immobilize the doe and drive the tip of his spear through her chest, puncturing lungs, and, more importantly, the thick cluster of nerves residing just above her heart.

When he was certain the doe was ended, Shahar stood up and scanned the horizon for signs of Merevaika. Blood was in the air now, at least on his part; they needed to finish up quickly and get moving if they wanted to avoid the less docile things that would be drawn to the scent of a successful hunt.

Reforging Alliances (Merevaika)

Postby Merevaika on January 17th, 2016, 9:52 am

The chase with Shahar was fast paced, Shahar throwing himself onto the doe that his wolf-dog held down. The creature was killed moments later and finally the hunter rose, looking for Merevaika. She waved for his attention, before turning to the buck, sliding off her horse. It thrashed slightly on the ground, kicking her as she approached. Thankfully, Denviel took that moment when the deer was distracted with the woman to pounce, snatching its neck in his jaws.

She took her dagger, moving it to where the arrow in its ribs was. With a sharp movement, she buried it in, watching as the buck stopped moving. Dead. Blood pooled over its chest, a smell rising in the wind. It would bring predators that wanted a meal ready dead. They had to leave, return to the safety of Endrykas.

Merevaika heaved the deer up, shifting its weight across her back as she moved it. It was heavy, almost too heavy, but Eryunt was a step away, close enough to heave the buck over before she collapsed under it. With the horse loaded, she started towards Shahar briskly, dog at her heel.

She signed to him, speech too dangerous if there was already blood in the air. Drawing in even more attention was risky. To Endrykas? Hurry, good hunt. With that, she mounted Eryunt, hoping the combined weight wouldn't be too much. He didn't show much discomfort, so she urged him forward, adjusting the deer to rest in front of her.

They moved quickly, hopefully in the right direction. Hopefully with Shahar behind them.

Yes, good hunt, Shahar signalled back. He closed his eyes and remained kneeling, taking just a few moments to regain his breath and let his blood calm down. It was better to do so now than to wait until potential danger arrived.

Speaking of which, Shahar was fairly certain that their hunt had drawn the attention of whatever dog-sized things he had sensed within the Web. There was no time to dally, and there was no time to even begin processing their kill.

Back home, “To Endrykas,” he said, taking the doe by the legs and drawing her near. Rolling her over, the clanless hunter bent down and hoisted her up to settle the full weight over his shoulders. A deep breath of preparation, and he stood up with the burden in hand; without the luxury to tie the feet together, he would simply have to keep the doe in place by hand.

Hauling the corpse to his strider, Shahar deposited the doe across Akaidras’ withers and took a few moments to steady it. When it seemed stable enough, he turned to signal time to move to Snow and Tuka. Although both were out of breath, they were both also aware of the wild animals that were likely coming for the kill, and were more than happy to take up their positions at the flank.

Merevaika, for her part, was already mounted and bringing her animals to bear towards Endrykas. She was moving again, as unwilling to waste time as he was.

Shahar leaped into the yvas and settled, placing a hand on the doe’s back to keep it in place as he coaxed Akaidras into motion. Leaning forward was a challenge, but the hunter managed it, squeezing his knees urgently to tell Akaidras exactly how important it was to start back home, and to do it now.

Akaidras needed little prompting.

Within a few moments, Shahar and his companions were catching up to Merevaika at a steady lope. Once they got to the city, they could relax.

And really, all things considered, this had been a very successful hunt.
