Fishing Job 2

Marek had caught a nice load of fish, mostly herring bit he got lucky with the red snapper and even caught a ling cod and a few black fin though. Nothing too outlandish but it was a nice haul. He did have some bad luck when his net tore and dumped an entire cast net full of fish back into the ocean. That was...unfortunate to lose that many fish all in one go. But he did try to make up for it. All totaled he had four hundred pounds of herring, five red snapper, two black fin and one ling cod.

Marek had taken to a particular part of the bay it was advantageous thanks to the Mako having a shallow draft. That meant he could pass over the shallow and jagged rocks that would normally cause damage to much larger ships. This had a few pro's and cons' the pros were he could fish with little competition but on the other hand his nets scraped against the rocks and became fouled and frayed and that's what happened Marek just closed his net and began hauling it back into the boat when a part of the net got looped or tangled in something below and when it broke loose it popped one of the strands in the net loose.

As he pulled his net closer to the boat the net opened more and more before opening fully. The entire net full of herring sluiced through the hole and back into the water. Marek would have closer to six hundred pounds of herring to sell rather than the four hundred pounds of herring he did have. But it was what it was and he'd have to take some time and repair his net. Luckily he brought spare nets and gear with him.

But at the end of the day he had a load of fish that he had to sell. So he set a course back to Syliras harbor. The Mako ran low but not as low as he had it in before when he had nearly fifteen hundred pounds of fish to sell. But that had it's pro's and cons too having a lot of meant one could sell a lot of fish and make a lot of money, on the other side of the coin it meant that one ~had~ to sell a lot of fish or be stuck with a lot of dyeing and rotting inventory which got riper and riper smelling over the days.

After a few hours the city of Syliras was seen from Mareks position at the tiller. It didn't take too terribly much longer before he entered the harbor. After passing through the check point Marek dropped his mizzen sail and let his main sail push him slowly past the larger ships that were moored in the deeper parts of the harbor once the docks came in site he dropped his main sail and let the Mako drift towards the docks guiding with his rudder and oars.

Fishing Job 2

Herring, what was there to say about herring, that was the first thing Marek wanted sold when he got to the docks but what to say about herring. People liked to buy products they were convinced was a better product than the other guys so Marek had to touch on the good points of herring.

Herring was an abundant fish they bred worse than rabbits and all said and done it was a good thing that herring bred as much as they did. Just about every single other fish that Marek could catch in the Suvan sea ate herring so a healthy herring population meant a healthy every thing population. Not to mention heavy loads of fish in Marek's boat at the end of the day which meant he could eat better than the average gruel most people in Syliras ate. He liked fish that was a give in, ranchers liked beef, shepherds liked mutton and fishermen liked fish. That was not to say that Marek didn't like other types of meat but he liked fish.

But herring herring was like barley, goat, rabbit and mallards. They were the one fish that every one could afford and most people could get their hands on. They could be pickled; just cut off their heads and split them before pickling them in brine and vinegar and pickled herring was tasty.

But Marek was not the only one that was selling it. That would typically make herring hard to sell. But with a city of fifty thousand hungry citizens not to mention every one else that was hungry in the city of Syliars.

Thinking about the extra hungry people started to give him an idea. There were dozens of foreign ships, naval vessels, and traders from other parts of Sylira and rather than sending their hands into port where they could easily get drunk, robbed, and or thrown into jail for just being a foreigner the captains would want supplies to come to them.

It wouldn't be that hard to get out to the other ships in the harbor as Marek hadn't even tied off at the docks yet. He gave the dock hand a shrug and smile and pushed off from the dock. He guided the Mako back through the docks and back into the Harbor proper and began eyeing the ships. He had a particular type of ship in mind. It had to be a fit ship, a fit ship tended to have a smart captain.

He passed a Syliaras Navy ship with the boatswain hollering to high heaven about something small and innocuous...not that one. He continued through the harbor with a load of fresh fish. He spotted a civilian Saique a small ship with lateen and square sails. But it looked recently careened judging by the build up of barnacles or lack there of, the hull above the water line had recently been white washed and the decks were being scrubbed with the boatswain giving orders and training new deck hands. That was the kind of boat Marek was looking for.
