"She's very quiet, Braken."

Mea's husband said nothing, adding to the tense silence that clung to the Windstride family pavilion. Instead, he remained perfectly still, his face contorted into a pained expression as he watched the little redhead girl potter about his family home. She was, indeed, incredibly silent. In fact, the child had said nothing since Braken laid eyed on her five bells ago, in the bright morning as he hunted in the Sea of Grass. She'd been sitting on the ground, looping two blades of grass together to make a pretty little grass necklace for herself. She still wore it now, but the grass blades had started to dry and tighten their loops. Soon it would break off and the girl's last worldly possession of her life before Braken Windstride would crumble away.

"When did Parro say he would arrive?" Mea asked, her voice as quiet and delicate as she could muster. The girl paid no mind though, instead fascinating herself with a particularly bright purple cushion.

Braken shrugged. His wife's question had barely registered in his mind. Parro was the only Drykas that Braken knew could speak a word of Nari, but he was also Mea's loathsome cousin. If his need weren't so desperate, Braken would have liked to avoid Parro's company at all costs. "I don't know, love. He said he'd come soon." Was that a hint of irritation in his voice, or just concern?

Mea made a small noise to acknowledge his answer, but she too found herself now unable to speak. Watching that little girl broke her heart. She was a mother herself now, and the mere thought of one of her precious children in a situation even half as dire as the one this little Inartan girl had found herself in made Mea feel queasy. Self consciously, she glanced over her shoulder through the entrance of the pavilion. Outside, her three children played together gleefully, perfectly safe and happy. She breathed a sigh of relief.

"I don't understand how she's alive, or so healthy."

"And... she is healthy, yes?"

Yet again Braken sent his wife a disdainful look. He had not reacted well when Mea had earlier voiced her concern over lice and other health issues when he came home with the redhead girl. Even when she had explained that her worry was not for herself, but for their children, he had chastised her selfishness. "The healers at the White Lily examined her, and yes. She is perfectly healthy. But she is tired, probably terrified and most likely scarred for life." His voice was smooth and gentle, but his eyes hard. Braken's message was clear, and Mea gave another pitiful, but sorry dip of her head. Whereas motherhood had made her cautious and wary, fatherhood had turned Braken Windstride into a man whose heart had been opened up to all children. Mea could see now that any concern she felt over this child would not even be comprehended by her husband.

"I hear my multi-lingual services are required!"

The children outside cried delightedly at the sound of Parron's ostentatious greeting, but Braken could not help but flinch and roll his eyes. The other male's loudness had startled the Inartan girl, and she stared open-mouthed at the opening of the tent. Only when Braken stepped towards her and made a gentle shh sound, like he would do to a spooked horse, did she seem to calm. Mea hurried out to greet her cousin, and in those very first moments where he found himself alone with the child, Braken promised to do all he could to protect her.

Where was her sister?

She never left her twin's side, so where was she?

The absence of her parents was less of a concern to the young Inarta -- they frequently left to hunt, or scout, or to merely explore. The rest of their travelling party - a pair of Drykas and a handful of hired mercenaries - also came and went with the dynamic needs of the group.

But her twin was always there, a constant and most beloved presence.

Apart from now.

She glanced around this strange room once again. It was a single large tent, the biggest she had even seen before, and full of comfortable looking cushions and beds. It was nice, but it was not quite home. But then -- what was home? The memory of the tent she had been staying in with her family was beginning to wane, as were the faces of the Drykas couple and mercenaries they had been travelling with. What were their names again?

Self-consciously, the timid girl looked to the adults that surrounded her. There were three now: the big, tall man with the brown beard, a pretty brunette woman and a man with an oddly wide mouth. Wide-Mouth was a new arrival that she did not recognise -- when did he get here?

She watched as the adults spoke quietly amongst themselves. Their quietness made her nervous: it reminded her of when her parents had realised that one of their bows had been moved and they were trying to figure out which of their identical daughters had done the crime. Adults talking quietly was never a good thing.

Eventually they dispersed, and Wide-Mouth crouched down to become eye level with the girl. The bearded man, standing closely to his left, said something sharply in their strange, airy tongue. It sounded strangely familiar, but she could not remember where from.

"Hello." Wide-Mouth said, touching his chest gently and speaking in his high-pitched nasally voice. "My name is Parro. What's yours?"

The sounds coming out of his mouth were different to what his bearded friend had just made, and for a tick the little girl smiled at the familiar sound of Nari. But then her smile disappeared, just as quickly as it had appeared. Where had she heard that sound before? She touched her forehead and closed her eyes, trying to grapple with the memories that were beginning to dissolve away in her mind.

Wide-Mouth inched closer, "where is your family? Do you remember?"

She backed away sharply. The girl disliked his wide mouth, his sharp jaw and pointed nose. His voice irritated her, especially how he said familiar words in a not-so familiar way. Suddenly, she desperately needed her mother and father and her precious, but missing, twin. She could hear children outside this large tent -- was her twin there? Opening her mouth, the girl gave a helpless wail that sounded a little something like:

"Nook!"

Nook

"Nook? What does Nook mean?" Braken demanded. His lack of understanding of the Inartan language irked him more than he dare admit, and the fact that Parro was acting as translator was merely the cherry on top of the metaphorical cake.

His wife's cousin did not answer immediately, but instead pursed his lips and a gross sucking sound. It was his form on concentration, but eventually Parro stood up and shrugged grandly. "Not a clue." He said, brazenly lacking in concern for the girl's wellbeing. "Maybe it's her name."

The three Drykas looked at each other tensely, waiting for one another to come up with a better explanation. Much to his annoyance, Braken could think of no alternate idea. "Maybe." He murmured, not yet willing to accept that Parro might be right. He turned to watch the girl. She was standing up now, inching her way painfully slowly towards the entrance to the tent. Her attention was locked on the children beyond, playing in the sun together.

She opened her little mouth yet again and called out for the second time, "Nook!"

Beside him, Mea made a quiet little chirping sound. No doubt she was yet again worried that the poor infant would give their sons and daughter some kind of disease. Subconsciously Braken found himself chewing his bottom lip. "I don't think that's her name. Why would she say her own name?"

Parron shrugged, his lip curled upwards in a mixture of confusion and growing boredom. The words lost cause were beginning to form on the tip of his tongue. This child was clearly damaged in some way, emotionally or psychologically. Perhaps she had even suffered a head injury out in the grasses? There was no telling. But he would not give up just yet: Parron crouched down again, whistled gently to catch the redhead's attention. Once her green eyes were on his face once more, he said again in fractured Nari: "What is your name? Is your name Nook? Yes or no?" Again she made no effort to reply, but instead watched him speak intently. Frustrated with the girl's lack of cooperation, Parron shrugged his shoulders and threw his arms into the air to shape the words what now? "I don't know what to say, Braken. She's just not responding. If she hadn't turned her head when I whistled, I'd have said she was deaf."

Braken bristled with irritation. "Well she's not." He said flatly, unable to accept the idea that there was nothing he could to for this frightened little girl. There was a bridge between, some type of connection that had formed the instant their eyes had met. He, Braken Windstride, had saved this child from certain death and he was not about to abandon her now. "She just needs time. She's lost her family - the Gods only know how - and now she's here. With us."

The child watched Wide-Mouth and the bearded man speak heatedly in their funny tongue. Their hands sliced through the air, their faced scrunched up until Wide-Mouth eventually left, and the pretty brunette hurried after him. This left her with the bearded man, the one she had met earlier and who had scooped her up in his arms to carry her into this large tent. The child liked him: she had been terribly scared before he had appeared, and now she felt less scared but no less confused.

Perhaps her twin was meeting her here?

Yes, that must be it.

The bearded man crouched down in front of her, but for a while he said nothing. He looked sad, and for a moment the child reached out to touch him, but then she remembered what her mother had said about strangers and she snapped her hand back. This made him look even sadder, but better safe than sorry.

She stood looking at him for a while, and looking at her. Eventually, the girl's attention waned and began to look at her hands. They had been horribly dirty a while ago, her nails all broken and bloody. But then someone - she couldn't remember who - had washed her hands and brushed her hair. She touched her hair now, feeling the strands of fiery redness pinned and plaited in a foreign but not unpleasant way.

"Nook?"

Her sister's name came from the bearded man. She snapped her green eyes up to him and gave a timid little shake of her head. No, not Nook. Nook was not here.

He touched his chest and said the word, "Braken." and then pointed to her chest. When the girl said nothing, he repeated this pattern several times: Braken, pause. Braken, pause. Braken, pause.. On the fifth Braken, she finally realised what he meant. Braken was his name! The girl rewarded this with a tiny smile and nod of her head to acknowledge that he understood.

He also smiled, then opened his mouth and several more, foreign sounds spilled out from it. The little redhead's mouth flattened once again, and she felt suddenly as if she was drowning amongst all those foreign words. Her breathing became erratic and she dashed away towards the exit of the tent, but the bearded man caught her and dragged her close to him. She closed her eyes, silently calling out to sister to come and save her.

But when she closed her eyes, she could hear her mother's voice. I want you run, my darlings. Run into the grasses and be quiet.

And then her sister had tugged at her arm and said come on, let's run! It had been exciting and dark, but their mother had been crying and for this reason the two girls had also been scared.

They ran together, two tiny little redheads fleeing hand-in-hand away from whatever was happening behind them. Someone screamed, but neither of the twins had dared to glance behind the.

Suddenly Nook had been yanked away from her, and when he had turned around, she had seen Nook yelling out her name from up in the air.

With a twitching and a ragged breath, the little girl slumped over.

"What happened?" Mea stood, aghast, in the entranceway to her pavilion home. Her husband stood stooped over the little redheaded girl, who lay sleeping in the very bed their four year old son slept in. "Why is she in Breet's bed?" The question had come out sharper than he expected or intended. Mea winched in preparation for her husband's temper.

But it did not come. Braken, instead merely grunted at her. He was too engrossed with the child, and Mea found herself feeling envious. But not for herself; for her sons and daughter. They should be the only children that their father gazed at so caringly, not this orphaned little Inarta girl who was no blood relative.

Guilt and jealousy washed over the Drykas woman and, fearful that the latter would win, she kept silent.

Braken heaved a great sigh. "She fainted." He said finally, glancing over his shoulder to find Mea hovering there awkwardly. All the defiance and fight had disappeared from him the moment the girl's body had slumped into his chest. He was now a man sick with worry and remorse for a child he didn't even know. "I know you're scared love." He said in an exhausted voice, "but imagine how she's feeling. She's lost, her family are either dead or long gone. She is -- what, three or four years old? And she would have died. Who knows what she experienced out there."

He was right. Mea knew her husband spoke the truth, and yet she found herself unable to say so. She adored her children so much that any change, any shadow of a threat, was unwelcome in her perfect world. "But Braken..." She let the words dissolve into mid-air. He knew her fears.

"I can't do nothing. Neither can you. What if she was Royce, or Anya, or Breet?" He turned to see Mea's face crumple with hurt as he mentioned their own children. "What would you say to the couple who turned their back on them, if they were in her position?"

"I would kill them."

"Exactly. And you're not even a fighter, love." They shared a weak, tired smile. "I know you're scared. But what if this little girl is meant to be here? What if she is meant to ours? What if, after all she's been through, we're meant to be her family now? If so, I can't turn away from that. If there's a shadow of a chance that we can give her a good life, I want to do so."
**
Unbeknownst to Braken and Mea, the little girl was now awake. She was terribly exhausted and confused, but unlike before she felt strangely at peace amongst these soft furs and blankets that stroked her skin as she shifted her position. In fact, she was so dozy and happy that she could not quite remember what she had been so concerned about before. Someone had been missing -- but who?

Her attention turned to the Drykas couple, who were talking in quiet and affectionate voices to each other. She listened to their soft words, not understanding what was being said but picking up on a single word that the male in particular had repeated several times.

"Eef."

The adults fell silent. Both of them slowly turned to the girl, wheeling themselves around slowly as if she were a baby deer that might bolt at any second. "If?" The man said, frowning slightly. The girl's accent and pronunciation of the word had emphasised the first sound, elongating it so the word rhymed with beef.

"Eef." She repeated giddily.

Hope, at last! Braken glanced to his wife, suddenly dizzy with excitement and optimism. He repeated his earlier gesture: touching his chest, saying "Braken", only this time he also indicated to the female and stated, "Mea."

When it came to him pointing at the little girl, she immediately proclaimed: "Eef!"

Mea touched his arm. How could she - a mother - deny this helpless little girl? Suddenly overcome with newfound hope, love and happiness, Mea whispered. "Then our little Ife you shall be."
